Fortune Barishal made history by winning their first-ever Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) title, overcoming Comilla Victorians with a six-wicket victory in an exhilarating final at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Friday (March 1). The defeat dashed the Victorians’ aspirations for a third consecutive BPL trophy.

Comilla Victorians’ struggles in the BPL 2024 final

Choosing to bat after losing the toss, Victorians faced a challenging start as Kyle Mayers dismissed Sunil Narine in the opening over after just scoring 5 runs. Tauheed Hriday contributed 15 runs before being dismissed at the team score of 30. Captain Liton Das (16 ) and Johnson Charles (15) couldn’t capitalize, and Moeen Ali‘s run-out at when the team was at 79 further deepened Victorians’ woes. James Fuller‘s impactful bowling performance, taking two wickets, limited Victorians to a score of 154.

In response, Barishal had a strong start in their pursuit of the target. Openers Tamim Iqbal and Mehdi Hasan Miraj forged a solid 76-run partnership. Tamim’s quick 39 runs innings and Miraj’s contribution of 29 runs set a solid foundation.

Mayers then took charge, playing aggressively and scoring 46 runs in just 30 balls, bringing the score to 141. Despite Mushfiqur Rahim‘s departure after scoring 13 runs, Mahmudullah and David Miller regsitered victory with one over to spare. In the final league stage match of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023, the Colombo Strikers (CS) faced a must-win situation against the Galle Titans (GT) to have a chance at making it to the playoffs. However, the Strikers had a day to forget as they delivered their worst performance in the history of the LPL, leading to their disastrous e??limination from the tournament.

On the other hand, the GT not only secured a convincing victory but also clinched the second spot in the league stage, earning the right to play in Qualifier 1 against the top-side Dambulla Aura. The game also saw a standout performance from Nuwanidu Fernando, who grabbed the limelight with a spectacular catch of Liton Das, serving as?? a positive?? highlight for the CS in an otherwise forgettable fixture.

The Titans’ decision to bowl first on a typical slow wicket in Colombo paid off well. Right from the toss, everything seemed to go in favor of the Titans. Their bowlers were in complete control, making it a challenging task for the Strikers’ batters. Kasun Rajitha‘s tight bowling yielded just ten runs in his two overs. Lahiru Kumara contributed by taking crucial wickets in his two overs, including both openers, Pathum Nissanka and Babar Azam, while also bowling a maiden over. Shakib Al Hasan continued the pressure, conceding only eight runs in his 3.4 overs and claiming the wicket of Iftikhar Ahmed.

Nevertheless, the standout performance came from Tabraiz Shamsi, who was sensational with the ball. The chinaman spinner made a significant impact by taking four wickets for just twenty runs in his four overs. His victims included Lahiru Udara, Nipun Dhananjaya, Nuwanidu and Mohammad Nawaz. Seekkuge Prasanna provided valuable support by taking the wickets of Chamika Karunaratne, Shoriful Islam and Jeffrey Vandersay.

The Strikers’ batting lineup struggled immensely against the disciplined and effective bowling of the Titans. They were bundled out for a mere total of 74 runs in 15.4 overs, with none of their batters managing to cross the 15-run mark.

Fernando grabs a stunner

In the pursuit of the target, the CS faced an early setback as they lost the wicket of Bhanuka Rajapaksha. Following Rajapaksha’s dismissal, the Bangladesh batter Das came to the crease to partner with Lasith Croospulle. It was a significant moment for Liton as he made his debut in the LPL 2023. Nonetheless, his debut turned out to be less memorable, as the 28-year-old was dismissed? after ??scoring just a solitary run.

To create further damage to the GT’ batting lineup, the CS introduced the right-arm leg spinner Vandersey in the fourth over. Vandersey proved effective, as he managed to dismiss  Das. However, this wicket wouldn’t have been possible without Fernando’s exceptional effort on the boundary.

In an attempt to break free from the shackles after scoring just one run in the initial three balls, he decided to take on the challenge. Liton aimed to hit the young leg spinner over extra covers for a maximum. But the vigilant Fernando, who was patrolling the long-off boundary, intervened by executing a spectacular diving catch. This catch provided the GT with their second breakthrough, reducing the oppositi?on to a score of 2/19 in their pursuit of the modest target of 75 runs.

Here’s the video:

Croospulle then played a mat?ch-winning innings, scoring an unbeaten 42 runs from 25 balls, including 4 fours and 3 sixes. His contribution helped the Titans secure victory. For his impactful performance with the ball, Shamsi was deservedly named the Player of the Match.

Bangladesh gained the advantage on Day 3 of the ongo?ing? first Test against New Zealand after a scintillati??ng batting display in Mount Maunganui.

Opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy, batter Najmul Hossain Shanto, captain Mominul Haque, and wicketkeeper-batter Liton Das all shined with the bat to help Banglad??esh to a historic first innings? lead over Black Caps.

Mahmudul Hasan scored 78 off 228 balls, while Najmul made 64 from 109 deliveries before Neil Wagner dismissed both the batters. Soon Trent Boult removed Mus?fiqur Rahim to reduce the tourists at 203/4.

Then, captain Mominul and Liton paired up to take the team out of hot waters. The duo ended up forming a dominating 158 runs partnership for the fifth wicket to put the hosts on the backfoot. Boult broke the crucial stand by dismissing Mominul 12 short of the latter’s century. The left-arm pacer didn’t just stop there as he soon got rid of another set batter Liton for 86.

Bangladesh scripted an impressive comeback ??on Day 1 of the ongoing first Test against Pakista??n at Zahur Ahmed? Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Frida??y.

After opting to bat first, the hosts were down and out, with the top four batters back into the pavilion for just 49 runs. Then, Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim joined hands to stage one of the finest comebacks in the fascina??ting game.

Both ??Liton and Mushfiqur stood up when it was needed the most for Bangladesh. The experienced pair put together an unbeaten partnership o?f 204 runs for the fifth wicket, denying Pakistan any hope to make a comeback in the game.

Though Liton was dropped on 67 by Sajid Khan, the 27-year-old cashed in the opportunity against a quality Pakistan bowling attack, which somehow felt the pressure and failed to continue with cons?istent line and length.

After the tea break, Liton brought up his maiden century off? 199 deliveries in the 78th over of the innings. The senior partner, Mushfiqur, played a bri??lliant supporting hand and displayed tremendous application to ensure that the hosts did not lose any more wickets before stumps on Day 1.

Bangladesh reached 253/4 before the bad lights forced the match officials to end the day’s play. Liton was unbeaten at 113 (11 fours, 1 six), while Mushfiqur (82*) stood 18 short of his eighth Test hundred.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh faced each other in match 15 of? the ongoing T20 World C?up 2021 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

The Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to bowl first, but things got ugly when a heated exchange took between Sri Lankan bowler Lahiru Kumara and Bangladesh opener Liton Das.

It all happened during the sixth over when Das stepped down t?he track and moved leg-side to attempt a big hit over mid-off. However, the shot was mis?timed and Shanaka, who was at the edge of the circle, took an overhead catch to see off Das.

But soon after dismissing the Bangladesh batsman, Kumara went upto him and the two players were spotted having a heated argument. Things got ugly on the pitch as the bowler and batter came face-to-face, with Sri Lankan playe??rs pulling Kumara away from Das.

“Well, well, well ?I don’t think I’ve seen that. That’s not a good look for the game of cricket,” said broadcaster Mark Nicholas in the commentary.

“I’d like to say that it was handbags, but I don’t know that it was. It was quite unpleasant,” he added.

The heated moment, however, didn’t affect Bangladesh’s run-flow as the Tigers went on to post 171/4 in their allotted 20 overs. Opener Mohammad Naim and middle-order batter Mushfiqur Rahim shined with the bat to help Bangladesh reach a respectable ?total.

Rahim stayed unbeaten on 57 off 37 balls, while Nai?m chipped in with va?luable 52 from 62 deliveries.

The left-handed batsman played a match-winning unbeaten knock of 80 runs off 49 deliveries. He was well supported by Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who hit 53 off 31 balls.

Only Regis Chakabva could show some fight from the home team. The wicketkeeper-batsman s??cored 54 off 51 balls, including 4 fours and 2 sixes.

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan shined with the ball for the touring party, picking up his third fifer in the 50-over format. He removed some big fishes like Zimbabwe skipper Brendan Taylor (24) and top-run getter Chakabwa.

Shakib finished the proceeding with five wickets for 30 runs in 9.5 overs, including three maiden overs. Apart from him, Taskin Ahmed (1/22), Mohammad Saifuddin (1/23), and Shoriful Islam (1/28) claimed one wicket apiece.

New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult is one of the most skilful fielders in world cricket at present. More often than not, he exhibits top-class efforts and stuns fans with his spectacular fielding. Once again, Boult gave a glimpse of it during the third One-Day International (ODI) against Bangladesh at Basin Reserve in Wellington on Friday.

While positioned at the third man region, Boult pulled off a splendid catch to dismiss Bangladesh opener, Liton Das. The wicketkeeper-batsman was looking set at 21 with three boundaries, but in an attempt to pull a short delivery by Matt Henry, he lost his wicket.

It all happened in the seventh over of Bangladesh’s chase of 319 runs. Das went for a glory shot on the leg-side but found an outside edge. The ball flew towards the third man, where Boult was stationed. The Kiwi pacer stormed in and dived to his left to pluck a blinder with one hand.
