Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced their squad for the upcoming two-match T20I series against the West Indies, starting on March 4.

Thisara Perera, Shehan Jayasuriya, and Nuwan Pradeep have been recalled to Sri Lanka’s squad while Kasun Rajitha, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Oshada Fernando were left out of the 15-member squad.

Thisara, the 30-year-old all-rounder, who was dropped for the New Zealand T20Is and the T20I rubber against India, has clubbed 193 runs and taken 11 wickets this season in tournaments across the cricketing landscape. He also performed brilliantly in the ongoing ODI series vs West Indies.

Pradeep, the right-arm fast bowler, last played a T20I against Australia in November 2019. Shehan Jayasuriya, the all-rounder, too hasn’t represented Sri Lanka in T20Is since the 2019 tour of Australia.

Both the T20Is will be played in Pallekele on March 4 and 6, respectively.

Sri Lanka squad vs West Indies:

Lasith Malinga (c), Avishka Fernando, Kusal Janith Perera, Shehan Jayasuriya, Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya De Silva, Thisara Perera, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Lakshan Sandakan, Isuru Udana, Nuwan Pradeep, Lahiru Kumara

Sri Lanka’s Lakshan Sandakan had a ‘brain-fade moment’ during the second T20I against Australia in Brisbane on Wednesday. The chinaman bowler failed to run out Steve Smith despite the batsman being outside of his crease.

The incident occurred in the 13th over of the Australian innings. David Warner was the batsman on strike, who played the second delivery of the over straight back to the bowler who went on to hit the stumps.

Meanwhile, Smith ran to complete a single, but Warner denied it. Sandakan quickly collected the ball, but instead of dislodging the stumps with the ball in his hand, he uprooted it with one hand and the ball in the other and appealed for a run-out.

As per the rules, if the bails are already dislodged, the fielding side has to uproot the stumps with the ball in hand. Sandakan committed a “schoolboy error” in this case and missed an easy chance to run Smith out. Even the batsman was also left laughing after the incident along with the bowler.

The on-field umpires, though, were not sure and took the case to the third umpire who eventually declared Smith not-out.

Here’s the video:

Warner and Smith both smashed half-centuries as Australia thumped Sri Lanka by nine wickets to clinch the three-match series.

Chasing a paltry target of 118 after the Islanders were restricted to 117, Warner and Smith batted together after skipper Aaron Finch departed for a golden duck. Warner was unbeaten on 60, and Smith not out 53 as Australia romped home with seven overs to spare.

Indian captain Virat Kohli was left rather annoyed after Sri Lanka players complained about air quality, which lead to multiple delays in play during the post-lunch session, at Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla on Sunday.

The play was halted for 17 minutes after lunch as the visiting players, led by skipper Dinesh Chandimal, wanted to leave the field of play complaining of severe pollution. The Lankans were seen wearing anti-pollution masks during the post-lunch session. The play was halted between 12:32 pm to 12:49 pm after which the umpires and match referee David Boon convinced them to continue.

However, there was another stoppage of play in the 127th over when Lakmal walked off the field after bowling the fifth ball. The umpires once again got together, chatting with Chandimal and Angelo Mathews. Sri Lanka manager Asanka Gurusinha and India coach Ravi Shastri also joined in.

Dilruwan Perera finished the over and Sandakan bowled the next before Chandimal stopped play because there were only 10 Sri Lankans on the field. Unhappy with the multiple stoppages in play, Kohli decided to declare India’s first innings at 536/7d. Kohli’s declaration signal clearly communicated his displeasure about the events during the second session of play.

Soon after the declaration came, the opposition players were seen relieved as Lakshan Sandakan and Niroshan Dickwella burst out laughing. The scenes didn’t look good sportingly as they were complaining of the pollution for a long time and were seen laughing after the innings was declared. While it could be with the relief that they were finally going to get some rest, but the actions of the visitors would be surely questioned later in the game.

Strikingly, Indians were absolutely comfortable in the field and completed the required quota of the overs to be bowled and no player was seen wearing the protective masks on the field.
