Kings XI Punjab swashbuckling batsman Chris Gayle missed his well-deserved hundred by just one run as he got out on 99 in an IPL clash against Rajasthan Royals on Friday.

Gayle played a scintillating knock, smashing eight sixes and six fours to top score for KXIP, but unfortunately for him and his fans, a seventh IPL century eluded the ‘Universe Boss’.

While facing Jofra Archer in the final over of the first innings, Gayle was cast??led by a fiery yorker from the 25-year-old England pacer. Usually of a calm demeanour, Gayle uncharacteristically displayed emotions after being bowled. The big-hitting Jamaican lost his cool and swung the bat in disappointment, the piece of ?willow flying towards mid-wicket.

This was the second time that Gayle got out at a score of 99 in the IPL. Last year, against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the KXIP veteran remained unbeaten on 99 off 6??4 balls while taking his team to a victory.

Gayle fined for beaching IPL’s Code of Conduct

The southpaw has been fined 10 per cent of h??is match fee for throwing the bat after being dismissed o??n 99 in the final over.

“Gayle admitted to the Level 1 offence 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct and accepted the sanction,” the IPL release stated. “For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.”

Gayle became the first batsman to hit 1000 sixes in T20 cricket after smashing the seventh six during his stay. His knock, however, couldn’t help KXIP cross the line as Ben S??tokes, Sanju Samson, Steve ??Smith and Jos Buttler guided the Royals to a seven-wicket win with 15 balls to spare.

Sanju Samson continued to attack following the English cricketer’s dismissal, scoring a 25-ball 48. The duo received quality support from skipper Steve Smith and Jos Buttler, who helped the side get across the finish line without much ado. For KXIP, Murugan Ashwin and Chris Jordan accounted for a wicket apiece.

Earlier, after put in to bat, KXIP posted 185 runs on the board after losing four wickets. Chris Gayle was the highest run-scorer as he smashed 99 runs off just 63 deliveries. There was an animated discussion between Ashwin and Buttler when the former appealed after ‘mankading’. It seemed that Ashwin had warned him before but the discussion turned into an argument soon. The KXIP captain didn’t withdraw his appeal and Buttler had to walk off with despair.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) lived to fight another day with a 15-run win over Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) as KL Rahul’s unbeaten 95, coming amidst a surprise batting meltdown, went in vain in an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 game on Tuesday night.

Opting to bat in this must-win game, RR could only muster 158 for eight despite Jos Buttler’s blazing 58-ball 82 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

The home team, however, staged a strong fightback with the ball as i??t restricted Punjab to 143 for seven in their quota of 20 overs.

RR then reduced KXIP to 19 for three in the fourth over and the visitors struggled to recover from the horrendous start?, as they soon found themselves stuttering at 45 for four and then 66 for five, with eight overs left.

For Punjab, Rahul played the lone ranger with 95 off 70 balls, his fourth half-century of the ongoing league. KXIP needed 32 runs in the last over and Rahul’s six and two fours were not enough for a win.
