Indian wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav stole the show in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand, leaving cricket fans and pundits alike in awe. Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, known for his colourful commentary and poetic descriptions, hailed Kuldeep’s performance as nothing short of “Sammohini Jaadoo” (hypnotic magic) after he outfoxed the formidable Kane Williamson.

Kuldeep Yadav sends back Kane Williamson early

The match, taking place at the Dubai International Stadium, saw New Zealand opt to bat first after winning the toss. The Black Caps got off to a strong start, thanks to a 57-run opening stand between Will Young and Rachin Ravindra. However, India’s fortunes changed dramatically with the introduction of Kuldeep Yadav into the attack. The left-arm leg-spinner made an instant impact, dis??missing Ravindra with a brilliant googly on his very first ?delivery. Ravindra, who had been given two lifelines earlier, failed to pick the variation and was bowled for 37 off 29 balls.

Kuldeep’s magic didn’t stop there. In his next over, he outwitted veteran batsman Kane Williamson, who got forward to push but ended up handing a simple return catch to the bowler. This dismissal was a testament to Kuldeep’s ability to deceive even the best batters with his flight and spin. Williamson, known for his exceptional technique and temperament, was left bewildered by Kuldeep’s guile, much to the delight of the Indian team and fans.

Navjot Singh Sidhu applauds Kuldeep Yadav

Sidhu, who has always been known for his effusive praise of exceptional cricketing skills, was quick to laud Kuldeep’s performance. “This is not just cricket; it’s ‘Sammohini Jaadoo’ at its finest. Kuldeep Yadav has shown once again why he is one of the most feared spinners in the game. His ability to outsmart batsmen like Kane Williamson is a rare gift,” Sidhu exclaimed during the live commentary.

Sidhu’s admiration for Kuldeep’s skill is well-founded. The Chinaman bowler has been instrumental in turning the tide of matches in his team’s favour, often with his unorthodox and unpredictable bowling style. His performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy final was no exception, as he helped India regain control after New Zealand’s promising start.

On the grand stage of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final, Kuldeep Yadav produced an absolute peach of a delivery for India to dismiss Rachin Ravindra, breaking a threatening New Zealand partnership. In just his first ball of the match, the left-arm wrist-spinner bowled a vicious googly that landed outside off and spun back sharply, clattering into the to?p of off-stump. It was a moment of magic that left both the batter and the packed Dubai International Stadium stunned in disbelief.

Kuldeep Yadav’s magical ball removes Rachin Ravindra, Anushka Sharma celebrates in stands

Ravindra, who had been batting confidently on 37 off 29 balls, was completely undone by the deceptive flight and rapid turn. He had initially shaped to play a drive through the off-side but was cramped for space as the ball jagged in at the last moment. His footwork was caught in two minds, his bat angle awkward, and his reaction too late to counter the sharp movement. The ball brushed his pad before sneaking through the narrowest of gaps to rattle th??e timber, sending the Indian players into wild celebrations.

Kuldeep, realizing the enormity of the moment, leaped in the air, punching his fist with elation, before being engulfed by his teammates. KL Rahul grabbed him in a headlock, while Rohit Sharma sprinted towards the bowler with arms outstretched. The sheer joy and energy ??radiated from the Indian camp as they knew they had landed a cruci??al blow.

As the Indian team celebrated on the field, the camera panned to the stands, where Anushka Sharma, wife of Virat Kohli, was seen clapping and cheering ecstatically. Her reaction mirrored the emotions of thousands of Ind?ian fans at the stadium and millions watc?hing back home. The dismissal completely shifted the game’s momentum, leaving New Zealand reeling at 69/2 and giving India a strong upper hand in their quest for the prestigious ICC trophy.

India strike back as Kuldeep dents New Zealand’s strong start in Champions Trophy final

New Zealand started the Champions Trophy 2025 final on a promising note, reaching 57/0 in under eight overs before India’s bowlers turned the tide. Will Young (15 off 23) was the first to fall, trapped lbw by Varun Chakravarthy, breaking a solid opening stand. However, Ravindra looked in sublime touch, smashing 37 off 29 balls, but his promising knock came to an end when Kuldeep deceived him with a perfect googly, cleaning him u?p.

Skipper Kane Williamson (11 off 14) struggled to get going and fell soon after, caught and bowled by Kuldeep, leaving New Zealand at 75/3. Daryl Mitchell (18) and Tom Latham (14) are now trying to stabilize the innings, but with India’s spinners applying pressure, New Zealand needs a steady partnership to rebuild. With 104/3 in 22 overs, the match is finely pois??ed, and India will look to capitalize on their momentum.

The stage is set for one of cricket’s most iconic rivalries as India and Pakistan face off in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This highly anticipated match, scheduled for February 23 in Dubai, promises to be a thrilling encounter between two cricketing giants. The clash between these arch-rivals holds? immense significance, not only due to their historical rivalry but also because it could significantly impact their standings in Group A.

High stakes of the marquee clash

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 marks a pivotal moment for both India and Pakistan, with each team vying for dominance. For India, this tournament offers an opportunity to assert its position as one of the world’s top teams after a disappointing loss in the 2023 Cricket World Cup final against Australia. Their recent triumph in the T20 World Cup has boosted morale, but winning this tournament would further solidify their reputation. With Shahid Afridi suggesting that India have more mat??ch-winners than Pakistan, there is added pressure on Team Blue to perform.

India began their campaign with a six-wicket win over Bangladesh on February 20th at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten century (101*), while Mohammed Shami took five wickets (5-53) to help restrict Bangladesh? to 228 runs. This victory placed India second in Group A with two points and an NRR of +0.408.

A win against Pakistan would not only boost confidence but also ensure a smooth path ?towards securing a semi-final spot. Conv?ersely, if they lose or struggle against Pakistan, it could complicate their journey through the group stages.

Key concerns ahead of the Indo-Pak clash

As Ind?ia prepare to take on its fiercest rival—Pa??kistan—several key concerns come into play:

  1. Injury woes and squad selection
    • One major concern is Jasprit Bumrah’s absence due to injury. His unavailability opens up opportunities for emerging talents like Harshit Rana or Arshdeep Singh.
    • In recent matches against Bangladesh, Mohammed Shami performed exceptionally well with his variations expected to be aided by pitches like those found in Dubai.
    • Another decision revolves around Kuldeep Yadav versus Varun Chakravarthy; Kuldeep’s experience makes him a strong contender despite Varun’s unique bowling style posing an intriguing challenge.
  2. Batting lineup stability
    • The batting lineup looks robust with Rohit Sharma at the helm alongside Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli providing stability at the top order.
    • KL Rahul‘s form has been consistent behind stumps as well as with bat-in-hand during crucial chases like that against Bangladesh.
  3. Bowling strategy against Pakistani batters
    • The Indian bowling attack needs strategic planning when facing aggressive Pakistani batters known for taking risks early on.
    • Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja will be crucial all-rounders who can provide balance both with bat and ball.
  4. Psychological Pressure
    • Given that all Indian matches are being held outside traditional home grounds due to logistical arrangements made by ICC and PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board), there might be less home advantage pressure but still significant media scrutiny around this high-profile match.

Overal?l, while Team India enjoys several strengths going into this critical fixture—such as depth in batting and versatile bowling options—it must navigate these challenges effectively if they hope to outmanoeuvre their fierce rivals from across the border.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to kick off its second match with a thrilling encounter between India and Bangladesh, two cricketing powerhouses with a history of intense battles. As the tournament opener, this match carries immense significance, not just for the points table but also for setting the tone for the rest of the competition. India, a team with a rich legacy in ICC events, will look to start their campaign on a high note, while Ba??ngladesh, known for their fearless cricket, will aim to spring a surprise. The clash promises to be a riveting contest, with both teams eager to make an earl?y statement.

Why the opener matters for India

India’s Champions Trophy opener ?against Bangladesh is more than just a game. It’s an opportunity to assert dominance, build momentum, and silence critics. India’s recent performances in ICC tournaments have been a mixed bag, and the team will be under press?ure to deliver. A strong start against Bangladesh will not only boost morale but also set the foundation for a successful campaign.

For India, the stakes are high. The team is brimming with talent, but the challenge lies in translating that? potential into consistent performances. The opener will test India’s ability to handle pressure, adapt to conditions, and execute their plans effectively. With the likes of Bangladesh capable of causing upsets, India cannot afford to take this game lightly. A win here will not only secure crucial points but also send a strong message to other contenders in the tournament.

Key concerns ahead of the tournament opener for India

As India prepare for the Champions Trophy opener, several concerns loom large. One of the biggest challenges is finding the right balance in the playing XI. The team management will have to make tough decisions, especially in the batt??ing and bowling departments.

1. Pace bowling void post-Jasprit Bumrah’s absence

India’s biggest setback is the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, their premier fast bowler, who has been ruled out due to a back injury. His ability to deliver breakthroughs in powerplays and death overs is irreplaceable. Mohammed Shami, returning after a 14-month injury layoff, now shoulders the pace attack but has shown rustiness in recent outings. Youngsters Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana (Bumrah’s replacement) lack experience in high-pressure ICC events, raising questions about their ability to contain Bangladesh’s aggressive batters like Najmul Hossain Shanto and Towhid Hridoy.

2. Middle-Order stability and senior battersform

While Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma remain pillars of the batting lineup, their recent ODI form has been inconsistent. Kohli’s neck sprain during pre-tournament preparations and Rohit’s struggles against swing bowling add uncertainty. Shreyas Iyer, though in good touch, must anchor the No. 4 slot, while the lower-middle order relies heavily on Hardik Pandya’s fitness. A misfiring top order could expose India’s reliance on all-rounders like Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel to rescue the innings.

3. Wicketkeeper conundrum: KL Rahul vs. Rishabh Pant

KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are locked in a battle for the wicketkeeper’s role. Head coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly favours Rahul for his consistency and ability to stabilize the middle order, while Pant’s explosive batting offers a game-changing X-factor. With Pant still recovering from past injuries, India risks ?losing flexibility if they priorit??ize caution over aggression in this critical position.

4. Over-Reliance on spin in Dubai conditions

India’s squad includes five spinners, including Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel. However, former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has questioned this strategy, noting? that Dubai’s pitches m??ay not be as spin-friendly as anticipated. While Kuldeep’s wrist-spin and Jadeja’s all-round skills are assets, playing three spinners against Bangladesh’s adept players of slow bowling (e.g., Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mahmudullah) could backfire. Balancing the attack with adequate pace options remains a tactical headache.

5. Hardik Pandya’s fitness and all-rounder dependency

Hardik Pandya’s role as the lone pace all-rounder is pivotal. His ability to bowl 10 overs and accelerate in the death overs is unmatched, but recurring fitness issues cast doubt on his relia??bility. If Pandya underperforms, India’s balance crumbles, forcing Jadeja or Axar to shoulder extra responsibility, which could dilute their effectiveness.

6. Tactical leadership under Gautam Gambhir’s new regime

Rohit’s captaincy and Gambhir’s coaching strategies are under scrutiny. Gambhir’s preference for Varun Chakaravarthy over Kuldeep Yadav  highlights potential friction in team selection. Additionally, India’s recent Test series losses and Gambhir’s unproven ODI coaching record amplify press??ure to deliver a strong start.

Despite losing the toss, India’s skipper Rohit Sharma expressed his preference for batting first in this crucial encounter. Rohit also reflected on his recent?? performances, emphasizing the importance of his contribution and the changes. As the series stands level, both teams will be eager to seize the momentum and secure th??e decisive victory in this highly anticipated showdown.

“I wanted to bat first and put runs on the board because we bowled first in the last two games. It was important for us to get a win in the last game. The fielders portrayed themselves well in the last two games, a lot of young blood. We want to continue to do well in the field. (On Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy) They are pretty new in their careers so we want to keep the pressure away from them, let them do their own and they have got a lot of potential. We have made some changes – Jadeja and Shami have been rested, unfortunately Varun has a sore calf. So, Washi, Kuldeep and Arshdeep come into the side,” Rohit said.

The anticipation for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is already soaring, with the tournament set to take place in Pakistan and the UAE. Cricket fans are eager to witness some of the biggest stars in action as top teams battle for the prestigious title. With the return of the Champions Trophy after an eight-year gap, the excitement is at an all-time high. The subcontinental conditions, expected to favor both pacers and spinners at different venues, will make for an intriguing contest be??tween bat and ball.

Ravi Shastri and Ricky Ponting pick their leading run-getters of Champions Trophy 2025

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri and Australian legend Ricky Ponting have made their predictions for the tournament’s highest run-getter. While speaking on the ICC Review Podcast, Shastri backed India’s young batting sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal to shine in the competition.

“The ball will start turning later; it’s not gonna be easy. I’ll look for the finalist, and looking at form, I’ll go with Yashasvi Jaiswal,” said Sh?astri, ??expressing confidence in the young left-hander’s ability to dominate in challenging conditions.

Ponting, on the other hand, chose Australia’s star batter Travis Head as his pick for the leading run-scorer. He highlighted Head’s exceptional performances in big matches, including his heroics in the 2?023 ODI World Cup final.

“Well, Ravi said he likes left-handers, so I’m gonna stick to the left-handers’ theme and I’m gonna go with Travis Head. He’s just been crowned Australia’s Allan Border Medallist, which is Australia’s Cricketer of the Year. Think back to the big games he played lately, think back to the last 50-over World Cup—magnificent there. Another great summer in Australia in the Test series against India in some very tough conditions. He’s just playing the game mentally in a different way than a lot of players right now. These bigger games and bigger tournaments seem to suit him really well. I’ll go with Travis Head,” explained Ponting.

Ponting and Shastri predict the tournament’s top wicket-takers

When it came to predicting the highest wicket-taker of the Champions Trophy 2025, Ponting backed Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa, citi??ng his effectiveness in limited-overs c??ricket and his ability to take wickets in crucial moments.

“I’m gonna go for Adam Zampa. Once again someone who’s gonna go through the final, conditions will spin I think in the back end of this tournament, I think there will be the conditions that help spinners. I think the help Adam Zampa always gets is on the back of Australia’s fast bowlers because the fast bowlers are doing such a great job at one end and when he comes into the attack and batters, they can’t afford just to sit on him so they gotta go after him a liitle bit more knowing they are not getting easy runs from the other end and he picks up lots of wickets. I think he is Australia’s key player in the whole tournament so I’m gonna go with Zampa,” explained Ponting.

Shastri, meanwhile, backed Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav but also mentioned Australian speedster Mitchell Starc as a dangerous contender.

“I would go with Kuldeep Yadav for India and I’d say Mitchell Starc, don’t rule out Starc because as a fast bowler in those conditions, the ball reverses and he can be lethal. He can do the cleanup job at the end. So I would put Yadav and then If there was a fast bowler, I’d pick Starc,” added Shastri.
