Ups and downs in Chahal’s cricketing journey

Chahal has joined Kent for a stint that includes three County matches, featuring contests against Nottinghamshire and Lancashire at their home ground, as well as an away match against Somerset. This season, Kent had also enlisted the services of Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh, who participated in five matches and scalped an impressive 13 wickets. Despite being a consistent member of the Indian T20 squad, the Jind-born cricketer hasn’t featured in ODI cricket since January this year. The announcement for the same was made public a few days back after Chahal failed to secure a spot in India’s ODI World Cup 2023 squad that was unveiled by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

It is worth mentioning that Chahal will be the second Indian to play for Kent in the county championship after Arshdeep Singh, who represe??nted the side during June-July and bagged 13?? wickets.

Yuzvendra Chahal expresses excitement over becoming part of the Kent Club

Chahal himself also expressed his ex?citement over becoming part of the prestigious? English tournament and expressed his eagerness for the challenge ahead.

“This is an exciting challenge for me, playing in English county cricket, and one I’m very much looking forward to,” Chahal was quoted saying by ESPNcricinfo.

As far as Kent are concerned, they are currently placed on the eighth position in the ten-team County Champions Division 1 table and are in danger of being demoted to Division 2 next season. However, the addition of an experienced spinner like Chahal comes as a relief for them. The same was said by Kent’s director of cricket, Paul Downton, as he welcomed Chahal to his team.

Speaking about signing Chahal, reckoned that they are very much excited and expressed his excitemen??t and optimism about having Chahal i?n the squad.

“We’re delighted to have secured a spinner of Yuzvendra’s quality for the last three Championship matches of the season, with Matt Parkinson not available to us until next year, and Hami Qadri recently injured. The Surrey County Club scripted history in the County 2023 Division One match by chasing mammoth 501 runs against Kent on Wednesday (June 14). The chase by Surrey was the second highest in the history of the prestigious County Championship. Notably, Middlesex (502 runs) still hol??ds the record for the highest chase in County cricket.

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Kent struggled against the Surrey bowlers and lost three of their top five batters for a duck. However, Jordan Cox hammered a brilliant 133 runs for his team and ensured that Kent finish??ed their innings on a decent score of 301.

After bundling out Kent, Surrey failed to get even closer to their score and were bowled out for just 145 runs. Matthew Quinn and Wes Agar bagged three wickets each for Kent and played a major role in? dismantling the Surrey line-up.

Further in the match, Kent yet again showed an impressive batting display and ended their innings on a total of 344 with an overall lead of 500 runs. Tawanda Muyeye top-scored for Kent and added 79 runs for them. Meanwhile, Hamidullah Qadri contributed 72 runs as well. Jordan Clark picked a five-wicket haul among Surrey bowlers.

Chasing a daunting total of 501 runs in the fourth innings, Surrey showcased a brilliant batting approach, with three of the team’s batters smashing hundreds and helping the side pull off a record run chase in the tournament’s history. Dom Sibley was the major contributor to the historic feat, as he scored 140 runs off 415 deliveries. In the meantime, the other notable contributions were from Ben Foakes (124) and Jamie Smith (114).

Apart from the record run chase, the match also saw a unique feat of the slowest century in County cricket that was attained by Sibley, ?who reached the three-figure mark in 368 deliveries and 511 minutes.

Arshdeep Singh, the talented left-arm pacer, is making a mark in his debut season of the County Championship for Kent. On the back of Smith’s incredible century in just 70 deliveries, Surrey stood at a commanding position on Day 3 of the match, reaching 263/3 in pursuit of a target of 501 runs at the St. Lawrence Ground in Canterbury.

Young Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh made an impactful debut for Kent in the ongoing County Championship Division 1 clash against Surrey at the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury.

Arshdeep, who joined Kent after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, showcased his talent by picking up his maiden wicket in the prestigious tournament. Although Arshdeep remained wicketless in his first eight overs, he displayed excellent control and kept the runs in check. His persistence paid off in the ninth over when he bowled a well-directed delivery to Surrey batsman Ben Foakes.

Foakes was caught on the crease, and the ball struck him on the pads, prompting the umpire to raise his finger and signal ‘out’.

Arshdeep’s impressive debut continued as he added another wicket to his tally, contributing to Surrey’s collapse. They were bowled out for a mere 145.

Kent gained a substantial first-innings lead of 156 runs. Kent had earlier posted a competitive total of 301 in their first innings, with batsman Jordan Cox playing a brilliant knock of 133 runs, compri?sing 17 fours and two sixes.

Arshdeep, who represents Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL, has shown promise in domestic cricket and burst onto the scene during the 2019 edition of the IPL. In his T20I career for India, the left-armer has scalped 41 wickets in 26 matches since making his debut against England in July 2022. Notably, he was India’s leading wicket-taker during their T20 campaign in 2022, claiming ten wickets in six matches at an impressive average of 15.60.

Asked to bat first, Kent got off to a bad start as Roelof van der Merwe picked up a three-wicket haul in quick succession to reduce Kent for 52/3. Zak Crawley tried to calm things down and made a vital 41 off 33 balls before Lewis Goldsworthy packed his innings.

Then Cox took charge and completely turned the game by a quickfire knock. He scored an unb?eaten 58 runs from just 28 deliveries with the help of six boundaries, including three sixes to take Kent to a respectable 167/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, Somerset could only manage to reach 142/9 in 20 overs, losing the contest by 25 runs. Opener Will Smeed and middle-order batter Tom Abell were the only batters who crossed the 2??0-run mark. While Smeed made 43 off 32 balls, Abell? scored 26 from 20 deliveries.

The last seam bowler to achieve the remarkable feat was legendary Andrew Caddick in 2005. Overall, Anderson became the 216th? man to reach the 1000-wicket benchmark in first-class cricket.

In the match, Anderson picked two more wickets to complete his 7-wicket haul as riding on his tremendous bowling, Lancashire bundled out Kent for just 74 runs in 26.2 overs. Darren Stevens, with 19, was the highest run-??scorer for Kent in their first innings.

On Friday, New Zealand speedster Adam Milne shined with the ball, helping Kent register a memorable victory against Surrey in the ongoing T20 Blast. Milne lit up the St Lawren??ce Ground in Canterbury by picking up a sensational hat-trick.

“It was a bit of a horrendous hat-trick”: Milne

After registering the amazing feat, Milne expressed his happiness and said it was indeed a special moment for him?? and?? admitted that Kent always experience some close encounters with Surrey.

“It’s my first ever hat-trick, so it’s special. We’ve always had tight, nail-biting games against Surrey. With the bowling, I got us off to a horrendous start, but Fred (Klaassen) bowled really well, and in the last 10 overs, we managed to claw it back and close it out quite nicely, taking some wickets through the back end and bowling some tight overs,” said Milne as quoted by KentOnline.

The N??orth Islander felt it was a horrendous hat-trick, and it surpri?sed him eventually as the deliveries he bowled were all slot balls.

“It was a bit of a horrendous hat-trick; they were all slot balls! Jameson’s went to the moon and back, so it was a good catch from (Jack) Leaning. I was surprised it even came down; it was that high; I thought it had snow on it,” added Milne.

England’s explosive batter Tom Banton once again impressed everyone with his blistering knock in the ongoing T20 Blast 2021. Banton astonished his fans with a staggering hundred to inspire Somerset to a remarkable 10-wicket triumph over Kent at St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury on Monday.

Earlier, Somerset won the toss and asked Kent to bat first. The Daniel Bell-Drummond captained side looked like getting a big total as at one stage; they were pretty comfortable with 125/2. However, they slipped from 125/2 to 168/8 in the last 5.2 overs, courtesy of Somerset skipper Lewis Gregory‘s 4-wicket haul for 27.

Kent opener Zak Crawley top-scored with 21-ball 39, adding 53 runs in??side the powerplay with Daniel. But, their effort was outshined by Banton and Conway, who went on to add 73 runs inside the powerplay.

After the memorable victory, Somerset are now tied with Sussex on 10 points but placed fifth due to a poorer run-rate. On the oth??er hand, Kent have remained? firm in second place.
