This remarkable feat unfolded during Match 48 of the ongoing 2024 ICC T20 World Cup against Afghanistan in Kingstown, St Vincent.

Despite Cummins’ stellar bowling performance (3/28), Australia fell short by 21 runs while chasing Afghanistan’s modest total of 148/6.

Playing for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Meiyappan dismissed Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka off consecutive de??liv?eries in the 15th over as the Islanders slumped to 117 for 5, from a comfortable 92/2.

Opening batter Pathum Nissanka smashed 74 run?s off 60 balls to take the Sri Lankan total to 152 for 8. In reply, the UAE were bundled out for a paltry 73 in 17.1 overs.

Meiyappan hopes for CSK call-up at IPL auction

With the tentative date for the mini-auction of IPL 2023 already in, Meiyappan hopes to receive a maiden call-up by the four-times champion, Chennai Super Kings (CSK). CSK roped him in during the second phase of IPL 2021 b??ut as a net bowler; however, Meiyappan is?? hopeful of being picked in the squad this time.

“That is something I don’t know about. But I hope they do,” said the 22-year-old when quizzed about the probability of him being picked by CSK???.

Back in 2020, when the IPL was shifted from India to the UAE due COVID-19 pandemic, Meiyappan was a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) training camp alongside Ahmed Raza.

“I came down during my off-season to work with Venkataraman Sir. In the last two years, I have grown a lot as a spinner. After the U19 World Cup, being able to spend time with RCB in the IPL as a bowler was a very enriching experience,” M??eiyappan was qu?oted as saying to the Indian Express.

“It’s not often you get the chance to rub shoulders with the best and learn how they prepare for a game. And then in 2021, I had the opportunity to be with the Super Kings, which again was a very nice experience,” he added.

UAE leg-spinner Karthik Meiyappan bagged the first hat-trick of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 against Sri Lanka in Geelong on Tuesday, October 18.

Meiyappan, born and brought up in India’s fourth largest city – Chennai, is the first player from an associate team to pick up a hat-trick against the Test team in men’s World Cups.

The 22-year-old began the proceeding by getting Bhanuka Rajapaksa caught off the fourth ball in the 15th over. He dismissed Charith Asalanka off the next ball, caught behind. Meiyappan then cleaned up the Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka for a golden duck and completed his hat-trick.

The leggie finished with impressive figures of 3 for 19 i??n his quota of four overs.

However, Meiyappan’s joy of taking a hat-trick was short-lived as Sri Lanka thrashed UAE by 79 runs and knocked them out of the tournament. Chasing the Islanders’ competitive total of 152/8, UAE could not put up a fight and got bundled out for a paltry 73 in 17.1 overs. Dushmantha Chameera (3 for 15) and Wanindu Hasaranga (3 for 8) broke the back of UAE innings.

Sri Lanka will next play Netherlands in a must-win enco?unter at the same venue on Thursday morning (October 20), while UAE will compete with Namibia in the afternoon. Both Namibia and Sri Lanka have won a game each among the Group A teams and are below Netherlands in the points ??table.
