In the realm of cricket, comparisons between players from different eras often ignite passionate debates among fans and analysts alike. Recently, this topic resurfaced when Jasprit Bumrah‘s extraordinary performance during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2025-25 against Australia led many to draw parallels with cricketing legend Kapil Dev.

Bumrah’s impressive tally of 32 wickets at an astonishing average of 13.06 not only secured him the title of highest wicket-taker in Tests Down Under but also prompted discussions about his place in the pantheon of Indian cricket greats. However, Kapil, the iconic captain of India‘s 1983 World Cup-winning team, has firmly rejected these comparisons, emphasizing the futility of pitting players from distinct generations against each other.

Kapil Dev shuts down debates terming it as a generational divide

Kapil’s assertion is rooted in a deep understanding of the evolution of cricket over the decades. “Please do not compare [me with Bumrah]; you cannot compare one generation with another. The boys of today score 300 runs in a single day, which didn’t happen in our time. So, don’t compare,” he stated emphatically during a media event.

He elaborated that modern players can achieve feats that were unimaginable during his playing days, such as scoring 300?? runs in a single day—a stark contrast to the more conservative scoring rates of the past. This statement underscores a critical point: cricket is not just a game of numbers; it is also a reflection of the context in which those numbers are achieved.

The burden of expectations on Jasprit Bumrah

The pressure on contemporary players like Bumrah is immense, especially given their performances are often scrutinized against historical benchmarks set by legends like Kapil. Bumrah’s recent series performance has placed him under a spotlight that comes with both praise and expectation. Kapil’s warning serves as a reminder that such comparisons can be detrimental, potentially overshadowing individual achievements and contributions to the game.

The future of Indian cricket stars

Aside from addressing comparisons with Bumrah, Kapil also touched upon the future of other stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both players have faced criticism for their lacklustre performances in Australia, raising questions about their future in Te??st cricket. Kohli managed only 190 runs in five matches, while Rohit struggled even more, averaging just 6.20 across three Tests.

When asked about their potential return to domestic cricket to rejuvenate their careers, Kapil refrained from offering direct commentary, stating that it is ult??imately up to the players to decide when they feel it’s time to step back.

They are very big players. Let’s hope when they think it’s the right time to play… they will call it off,” he concluded, highlighting his respect for their autonomy in making such significant career decisions.

It’s only rare these days that former cricketers clash with each other over actions during their careers. But Yograj Singh, father of India’s celebrated all-rounder and former World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh, had sparked controversy by revealing a shocking incident between him and Kapil Dev. The former Indian skipper had indirec??tly replied Yograj, without directly c??onfronting him.

Kapil Dev denied acknowledging Yograj Singh

Dev, was spotted coming for an event and started a discussion with the journalists, who encircled him and asked for a response to Yograj’s remarks. The former World Cup winner deliberately seemed to not understand what the journalists wanted to ask.

“Kaun hai? Kaun hai? Kiski baat kar rahe ho? (Who is he? Who is he? Whom are you talking about?” asked Dev, as if he didn’t know who Yograj was. The paparazzi even told him that they were referring to Yuvraj’s father Yograj, but Dev appeared to dodge what they wanted to ask.

But it seemed that the conversation between the former Indian skipper and the media persons had reached a point where the questions were unavoidable for Dev. He then resorted to ignoring the mention of Yograj from the paparazzi and asked if they wanted t?o ??ask something else from him.

“Acchaa, aur kuch? (Anything else)” was the reaction from Dev when journalists mentioned Yograj’s name. Kapil and Yograj played alongside each other for several years. In 1977, the selectors chose Yograj over Dev for the India U-22 team playing against England in Nagpur. Yograj made his debut in the  Indian cricket team during the 1980 tour to Australia and New Zealand. However, he was mysteriously dropped from the team after the tour. Yograj played his last ODI for India on 15 February 1981?? against New Ze?aland.

What did Yograj Singh say?

In an interview with Samdish Bhatia, the widely popular YouTuber who features on a YouTube channel named ‘Unfiltered?? with Samdish,Yograj talked about his relationship with Dev.

“When Kapil Dev became captain of India, North Zone, and Haryana, he dropped me for no reason. My wife wanted me to ask Kapil questions. I told her that I would teach this bloody man a lesson,” Yograj said during the interview.

“I took my pistol out; I went to Kapil’s house in Sector 9. He came out with his mother. I abused him a dozen times. I told him because of you I have lost a friend and what you have done, you will pay for it. I told him, ‘I want to put a bullet through your head, but I am not doing it because you have a very pious mother who is standing here.â€?I told Shabnam, ‘Let’s go’,” he further added, re??vealing the incident that happened between him and Dev.

Yograj further added that the two former Indian cricketers have not met or contacted each other since. However, after India won the 2011 ??World Cup, Yograj sent a paper cu??tting to Dev and said to him that his son (Yuvraj) did better than Dev.

”Kapil sent me a WhatsApp text saying we will be brothers in the next life. We will be born from the same mother in the next life. He wanted to meet me. But there is a vengeance, and it still hurts,” Yograj concluded.

Indian cricketing icon Kapil Dev has thrown his support behind under-fire skipper Rohit Sharma, following India’s 10-wicket loss to Australia in the second Test at Adelaide Oval. Speaking at the launch of the Vishwa Samudra Open golf championship, Kapil addressed concerns over Rohit’s leadership and form.

Kapil Dev calls for patience with Rohit Sharma

Kapil, known for his candid opinions, urged patience from fans and critics alike, emphasizing that judging a captain on the basis of one or two poor performances is unjust. “Rohit doesn’t need to prove himself—he has done it consistently for many years,” Kapil said. “Let’s not doubt someone’s capabilities so quickly. His talent and ability are well-known, and I’m confident he will regain his form.”

Reflecting on recent success and future challenges

The 1983 World Cup-winning captain highlighted Rohit’s recent successes, reminding critics of India’s T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year under his leadership. “Six months ago, when he led India to the T20 World Cup title, nobody questioned his captaincy. If his form continues to dip, decisions will naturally follow, but for now, let’s trust his abilities and give him the time to bounce back,” Kapil added.

Rohit, who returned for the Adelaide Test after missing the first match in Perth due to ??the birth of his second child, struggled for runs and scored just 3 and 6 after moving down the batting order.

India, captained by Jasprit Bumrah in Rohit’s absence, registered a commanding 295-run victory in the opening Test at Perth.

As the Indian team prepares for the third Test at The Gabba, beginning on December 14, Kapil’s remarks reflect a firm belief in Rohit’s resilience and capability to overcome setbacks. Whether Rohit can rediscover his form and lead India to success in the remainder of the series remains to be seen, but for now, the legendary all-rounder has sent a strong message of support.

Team India‘s cricketing journey in Australia has been a story of gradual evolution, with the team facing early challenges but gradually growing in stature on Australian soil. While the early years were dominated by Australian supremacy, especially with their formidable pace attacks and the aura of players like Sir Donald Bradman, India’s competitiveness began to show in the 1980s and 90s. Over the years, the Indian team has transformed, and with each visit to Australia, they have shed their underdog status. The Indian team’s success in Australia now represents one of the most compelling chapters in the history of Test cricket.

From historic first wins to unforgettable series victories, India’s achievements in Australia have become a point of pride. The development of a strong bowling unit, the rise of players who thrive in challenging conditions, and the strategic leadership have all contributed to India’s growing success in the land of the Kangaroos. While the journey hasn’t been without its challenges, India’s consistent progress on Australian soil showcases their rise as a major force in world cricket.

Now, let’s explore how the Indian team has navigated through these challenges and emerged stronger over time.

India’s flare in Australia in Test cricket

The early struggles

India’s initial encounters in Australia were marked by considerable struggles. Their debut Test series in 1947-48 saw a comprehensive 4-0 defeat, with the Indian team failing to make an impact against a dominant Australian side. This early period in Indian Test cricket was characterized by difficulties adapting to Australia’s fast and bouncy pitches, as well as an inability to counter the aggressive Australian cricketing mindset.

Throughout the 1950s and 60s, India failed to register any significant victories, and by the 1970s, it was evident that the Indian team still lacked the firepower to compete with Australia’s cricketing giants. The absence of a world-class fast-bowling attack and a dependence on spin bowling in conditions that favored pace bowlers made India’s task even harder. The team had to rely on individual brilliance, but a collective effort was often missing.

Building momentum from the 1980s era

The early 1980s marked a turning point for India in Australia. The 1980-81 series saw India secure their first Test win in Australia, although it was not part of a series victory. Gundappa Viswanath‘s fighting ton and Kapil Dev‘s incredible spell of fast bowling, where he led India to a thrilling win in Melbourne, gave the team and their supporters a glimpse of India’s potential.

In the 1985-86 series, India managed to draw the series 0-0, a significant improvement given the tough Australian conditions. Though they couldn’t win, the Indian team displayed resilience and competitive spirit, particularly through the efforts of their batters and Kapil’s leadership. The 1991-92 series was another tough battle, where despite individual contributions, India lost the series 4-0. However, the team’s performance continued to evolve, and the emergence of players like Mohammad Azharuddin and Sachin Tendulkar showcased India’s growing potential.

The 1999-2000 series, although a 3-0 loss, saw the rise of players like Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, whose resilience would later contribute significantly to India’s success in Australia. These series laid the foundation for the eventual triumphs that would come in the new millennium.

The golden period under Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid

India’s success in Australia during the early 2000s laid the foundation for their future victories. Under the leadership of Ganguly, India started to play with a sense of confidence and aggression. The 2003-04 series was significant because it showcased the Indian team’s ability to compete on Australian soil, with remarkable batting performances, particularly from Dravid, who ended the series as the highest run-scorer.

India drew the series 1-1, with a standout performance from Dravid, who scored centuries in Adelaide and Melbourne. This was one of the first series where India’s team showed a genuine competitiveness, especially with the rise of the young players like Virender Sehwag, and a more b?alanced approach to fast and spin bowling.

The 2007-08 series, though a difficult one for India with the controversies surrounding the Sydney Test, also witnessed Indian players like Anil Kumble and Tendulkar shining. Although India didn’t win the series, it was clear that the team was now a formidable opponent. The spirit displayed in these years set the stage for the monumental Test victories that would follow in the next decade.

The beginning of India’s transformation under Virat Kohli

The 2010s were a transformative period for India’s Test cricket team in Australia. The journey, however, wasn’t without its struggles. In the 2011/12 series, India faced a crushing 4-0 defeat, where Australia dominated the entire series. Despite individual performances, India struggled to adapt to the hostile Australian conditions, particularly against the pace attack and the Australian batting line-up. Similarly, in the 2014/15 series, India again lost 2-0, as Australia’s fast bowlers and a resurgent Michael Clarke led the charge. Despite some brave efforts, especially by Virat Kohli, who scored heavily, India fell short in both series, highlighting the gaps in their ability to consistently challe??nge Australia in their own backyard.

However, the tide began to turn in the 2018-19 series, where India achieved their first-ever Test series win in Australia, defeating the hosts 2-1. Kohli’s leadership, combined with remarkable batting performances by Cheteshwar Pujara and outstanding fast bowling from Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Ishant Sharma, led to this historic success. This victory marked a significant turning point, demonstrating India’s growth as a global cricketing power and their ability to adapt to Australian conditions.

The 2020-21 series further cemented India’s position as a Test cricket powerhouse. With a depleted squad and the absence of key players like Kohli following India’s embarrassing show at the Adelaide, Ajinkya Rahane‘s leadership saw India create history by winning the series 2-1. The final Test at the Gabba, where India chased down a steep target in dramatic fashion, broke Australia’s 32-year unbeaten record at that ground, marking a historic moment in Indian cricket.
