In a surprising turn of events, Kagiso Rabada, the star pacer of the Gujarat Titans (GT), has left the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season to return home to South Africa due to personal reasons. This sudden departure has left the franchise and fans alike wondering about the duration of his absence. Rabada, known for his exceptional bowling skills, had played only two matches for GT this season, picking up one wicket in each game against Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians. His absence was felt in the recent match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), where Arshad Khan stepped in and made a significant impact by dismissing Virat Kohli early.

Rabada’s departure is a significant blow to the team, given his impressive IPL record of 119 wickets in 82 matches at an average of 22.29 and an economy rate of 8.53. Despite having other pace options like Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Gerald Coetzee, replacing Rabada’s experience and skillset will be challenging. If his absence extends beyond a few matches, GT might need to consider replacements.

3 players who can replace Kagiso Rabada in IPL 2025

  1. Mustafizur Rahman: The experienced campaigner

Mustafizur Rahman, the Bangladesh pacer, is an excellent candidate to replace Rabada. Known for his ability to pick wickets with the new ball and his prowess as a death bowler, Mustafizur can bring a unique dimension to the GT bowling attack. His impressive T20 record includes 351 wickets in 279 innings at an average of 21.72. In the IPL, he has played 57 games and taken 61 wickets, showcasing his adaptability and effectiveness in different conditions. Mustafizur’s left-arm angle would also provide variety to the GT bowling lineup, making him a valuable asset if Rabada misses the rest of the season.

  1. Alzarri Joseph: The speedster from the Caribbean

Alzarri Joseph, the West Indies fast bowler, is another potential replacement for Rabada. Joseph has been leading the West Indies’ pace attack in white-ball cricket and is known for his ability to bowl at high speeds. Although he has not been consistent in the IPL, his overall T20 record is impressive, with 176 wickets in 141 innings at an average of 24.77. Joseph has previously played for GT in IPL 2022 and 2023, picking up 14 wickets, which gives him an edge due to his familiarity with the franchise. His inclusion could add a fresh dynamic to the GT bowling attack.

  1. Josh Little: The Irish sensation

Josh Little, the Ireland cricketer, is a promising young bowler who could step into Rabada’s shoes. Little has played for GT before, albeit briefly, and showed promise by taking four wickets in his debut match. Although he struggled in the previous season, his overall record for Ireland is solid, making him a potential candidate for a recall. Little’s experience with GT and his ability to perform under pressure could make him an attractive option if the team decides to bring in an international replacement.

While Rabada’s absence is a significant setback for Gujarat Titans, the team has a strong foundation with other talented bowlers like Siraj, Krishna, and Coetzee. However, if Rabada’s absence extends, each of these bowlers brings unique strengths that could help GT maintain their competitive edge in the IPL 2025 season. As the team prepare to face Sunrisers Hyderabad next, they will be hoping that Rabada returns soon, but they must also be ready to adapt and make the necessary adjustments to ensure their winning streak continues.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma delivered a masterful performance, scoring a brilliant half-century on a challenging surface at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, against Ireland to kick off their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on a strong note. The Men in Blue comfortably chased down the 97-run target, registering an eight-wicket win in just 12.2 overs to seal their opening contest of the tournament.

Masterful batting on a tough track

On a pitch where most batters struggled to score, Rohit played a composed and calculated innings, taking necessary risks to reach his fifty. Despite the challenging conditions, he managed to anchor India’s innings effectively. He retired hurt after reaching his half-century, having laid a solid foundation for the chase.

Rohit Sharma’s injury scare and resilience

However, during the 9th over of the run-chase, bowled by left-arm speedster Josh Little, Rohit sustained a light blow on his arm. Attempting a scoop shot, he missed the delivery, which struck him near the shoulder. Despite the injury, Rohit continued to bat, hitting two consecutive sixes and reaching his half-century with a four in the next over. Nevertheless, the injury forced him to retire hurt after the 10th over.

Successful chase despite setback

Rohit’s departure brought Suryakumar Yadav to the crease. Although Suryakumar was dismissed for just 2 off four deliveries, India remained untroubled in their chase. Rishabh Pant took charge, finishing unbeaten on 36, and sealing the victory with a stylish reverse six off pacer Barry McCarthy.

Post-match remarks on injury and pitch conditions

Rohit later revealed during the post-match presentation that his injury was not serious, stating, “Yeah, just a little sore (the arm),” The match’s venue, Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, faced criticism for its unpredictable bounce and slow outfield. Rohit commented on the conditions, stating, “I mentioned at the toss that we were quite unsure of what to expect from the pitch. Playing on a five-month-old surface posed its challenges, and I don’t think the wicket settled down even when we batted second,”

The squad boasts a blend of experience and youthful exuberance. Stirling, a proven performer in the shortest format, will bring stability at the top of the order. He’ll be ably supported by established names like Andrew Balbirnie, a dependable batsman, and George Dockrell, a wily spin bowler.

Ireland will visit Bangladesh next month for two Tests, three ODIs and as many T20Is. But the star Irish opening batter Paul Stirling and premier fast bowler Josh Little will not be part of the longest format games.

Stirling will focus on white-ball cricket this year as Ireland looks to secure World Cup qualification. Meanwhile, Little will only play the ODI matches against Bangladesh and will miss the rest of the tour. The left-arm seamer and Stirling will also not feature in the Sri Lanka Test game starting from April 18. Notably, it would be after four years that Ireland will appear in Tests when they face Bangladesh in Dhaka from April 4.

Ireland coach Heinrich Malan spoke about the exclusion of Stirling from the longest format and cited workload management as the reason behind resting the latter.

“There’s a lot of cricket in that space but he’s also got a fair few commitments around the T20 leagues, and for us it’s working back from us pinnacle events as a Cricket Ireland men’s side,” Malan was reported saying to BBC.

“One of those pinnacle events is playing Bangladesh at home and trying to qualify outright for the World Cup, so it’s just trying to find an opportunity for him to be at home for a little period of time,” he added.

Malan also shed light on Little’s omission and said he had the same sort of conversation with the Indian Premier League-contracted pacer.

“Going to the IPL is a life-changing opportunity and it creates opportunity for us to keep broadening our squad and our environment,” said Malan.

“For us it’s getting to the start of May when we play Bangladesh in the World Cup Super League qualification, and trying to have a full squad to pick from when people are fit and ready to play cricket.”If we can have the six weeks in the sub-continent, we can expose a couple of young players to have some opportunity and experience,” he concluded.
