The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024 witnessed a sensational Group C clash between Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Jharkhand at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium. The star of the show was none other than UP skipper Bhuvneshwar Kumar, whose stunning hat-trick turned the match in his team’s favor.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Hat-Trick: A masterclass in bowling

In a gripping moment during the 17th over of Jharkhand’s innings, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the seasoned right-arm medium-fast bowler, etched his name into the record books with a breathta??king hat-trick.

The first wicket came as Robin Minz, batting on 11, attempted to hit the ball for a boundary but ended up being caught by Priyam Garg. The scoreboard read 116 when Minz departed. On the very next ball, Bal Krishna nicked an angled delivery while attempting a leg-side shot, gifting an easy catch to wicketkeeper Aryan Juyal and departing for a golden duck.

The hat-trick ball was a beauty, an inswinging delivery that left Vivekanand Tiwari completely bamboozled as it cras?hed into the stumps, sending the bails flying. The crowd erupted in applause as Kumar celebrated his remarkable fea??t.

Here is the video:

Bhuvneshwar’s match-turning spell earned him the well-deserved Player of the Match award. His precision and ability to deliver under pressure showcased why he remains one of the most reliable bow??lers.

Jharkhand’s spirited chase falls short

Jharkhand wo??n the toss and elected to bowl first, aiming to exploit the conditions. Uttar Pradesh, despite losing wickets at regular intervals, managed to post a respectable 160/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Contributions from the middle order ensured the team reached a competitive total. Jharkhand’s Krishna was the standout bowler, claiming three crucial wickets to keep the Uttar Pradesh batters in check.

Chasing 161 for victory, Jharkhand’s innings revolved around a brilliant knock by Anukul Roy, who sma??shed 91 runs in a valiant effort. Ho?wever, his heroics weren’t enough, as Jharkhand faltered under pressure and were bowled out for 150 in 19.5 overs and loss the match by 10 runs.

The Jharkhand cricket team has officially appointed Ishan Kishan as their captain for the upcoming Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season. The team will kick off their campaign against Assam in Guwahati. Kishan’s appointment comes after a successful domestic season, where he represented Jharkhand in the Buchi Babu Trophy, India C in the Duleep Trophy, and the Rest of India in the Irani Cup.

Ishan Kishan’s return to domestic cricket

Kishan’s return to domestic cricket was a significant step towards his goal of making a comeback to the Indian team. His absence from the BCCI central contracts in February 2024 was a result of skipping domestic red-ball matches. BCCI secretary Jay Shah ha?d emphasized the importance of domestic cricket as a benchmark for selection to the national squad, warning that skipping it could have serious consequences.

Eyes on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Kishan is eager to make his mark in domestic cricket and secure a place in the Indian squad for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. Those close to the star player believe that the BCCI secretary’s warning does not apply to him, as Kishan has always prioritized the Ranji Trophy. Despite a hectic schedule with the Indian cricket team in the 2022-23 season, he managed to play a couple of Ranji Trophy games and scored a century against Kerala, which ultimately helped him earn a place in India’s Test team.

Kishan’s setback in international cricket

However, Kishan’s journey has not been without its challenges. Despite performing admirably in the few opportunities he had, he has struggled to secure a regular berth in the Indian team across all three formats. His exclusion from the T20I squad against Afghanistan, even when opener Ruturaj Gaikwad was unavailable, was a significant setback.

A tough pill to swallow

Kishan has admitted that his exclusion from ??the team was a tough pill to swallow. He attributed his decision to take a break to travel fatigue and a need to regain his mental and physical well-being. Unfortunately, his decision was not fully understood by many outside of his inner circle.

“I was scoring runs and then I found myself on the bench. These things do happen in a team sport. But I experienced travel fatigue. It meant there was something wrong, I was not feeling well or right and so I decided to take a break. However, sadly, barring my family and few close people no one understood that,” Kishan told The Indian Express.

As Kishan continues to work hard and prove his worth in dom??estic cricket, his determination to make a come?back to the Indian team remains unwavering. With the Ranji Trophy as a platform to showcase his skills and leadership abilities, Kishan hopes to reignite his international career and once again don the Indian jersey.

In an unexpected twist, Ishan Kishan, the talented wicket-keeper and aggressive batter for the Jharkhand cricket team, showcased a lesser-known aspect of his cricketing abilities during a match against Hyderabad Cricket Association in the prestigious Buchi Babu cricket tournament. Known for his explosive batting ??and sharp skills behind the stumps, Kishan caught spectators off guard when he rolled his arm over to bowl two overs of right-arm off-spin.

Ishan Kishan stuns fans with unexpected bowling display

It’s a rare sight to witness Kishan, usually stationed behind the wickets with his gloves on, taking on a bowling role. Although he didn’t manage to claim any wickets in the two overs he bowled, his surprise contribution was enough to generate buzz on social media and among cricket fans. The game highlighted Kishan’s willingness to contribute to the team’s efforts in unexpected ways, showcasing his versatility as a cricketer.

Kishan’s comeback in domestic cricket

Kishan’s participation in domestic cricket holds special significance, particularly given the turbulent year he’s experienced. Earlier in 2024, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) excluded Kishan from its central contracts list after the wicket-keeper batter declined to participate in the latter stages of the Ranji Trophy, despite multiple instructions from the board. This decision followed Kishan’s earlier choice to opt out of India’s Test series against South Africa, citing mental health reasons, which kept him off the field for several months. Kishan’s last appearance for the national team was in the T20I series against Australia in November 2023.

The Buchi Babu cricket tournament marks Kishan’s return to competitive cricket, and his presence on the field—whether as a batter, keeper, or surprise bowler—is a welcome sight for fans. With his focus now on domestic cricket, Kishan is gearing up for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, where he will represent the Team D squad under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer. His performance? ?in these domestic tournaments could play a pivotal role in determining his pathway back to international cricket.

Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan made a sensational comeback to red-ball cricket, smashing a stunning 86-ball century during the Buchi Babu Tournament 2024 match against Madhya Pradesh. The Jharkhand skipper, who led from the front, scored an aggressive 114 off just? 107 balls, featuring 10 sixes and 5 fours. Among his remarkable shots, the most eye-catching was a jaw-dropping one-handed six that quickly went viral on social media.

The one-handed six by Ishan Kishan

The standout moment of Kishan’s innings came when he faced spinner Adheer Pratap Singh. Despite not fully reaching the pitch of the ball, Kishan charged down the wicket and, with one hand off the bat, sent the ball soaring over the boundary. This audacious shot highlighted his confidence and skill, leaving fans and experts in awe. The video clip of this extraordinary shot quickly made waves on social media, underscoring Kishan’s explosive return to form.

A swift century that changed the game

Kishan’s innings began when Jharkhand was at a precarious posit??ion, 108/3, effectively four down with opener Vikash Vishal retired hurt. Kishan initially took his time to settle, cautiously moving to 15 off 37 balls. However, once he found his rhythm, there was no stopping him. He accelerated rapidly, reaching his half-century in just 60 balls. Kishan then unleashed a barrage of powerful shots, adding 54 more runs in just 26 deliveries. His century, reached with the one-handed six, was a masterclass in aggressive red-ball batting, helping Jharkhand take a crucial 64 runs lead.

The road to redemption

Kishan’s return to domestic cricket is particularly significant, considering the challenges he faced earlier this year. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had excluded him from the central contracts list after he chose not to participate in the latter stages of the Ranji Trophy, despite repeated instructions. Additionally, Kishan had opted out of the Test series against South Africa, citing mental health reasons, and had not represented India since the T20I series against Australia in November 2023. Kishan will next feature in the upcoming Duleep Trophy and will play for Team D squad, led by Shreyas Iyer.

The recent decision by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to terminate the national contracts of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer has stirred up a heated debate within the cricketing community. As the cricketing world grapples with the implications of this decision, former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has shared his perspective, adding depth to the ongoing s??aga.

Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan’s non-participation in domestic games

In the weeks preceding the contract termination, various reports and speculations hinted at the BCCI’s dissatisfaction with Kishan and Iyer. Allegations of their non-participation in domestic events, despite not being part of the national setup, fueled rumors about possible disciplinary action.

BCCI’s unprecedented decision

Contrary to initial skepticism, the BCCI took decisive action by axing the central contracts of both players during the announcement of the annual contracts for the year 2023-24. The press re??lease singled out Kishan and Iyer, shedding light on the unp??recedented move and catapulting the issue into the spotlight.

The missed matches and controversy

The decision stemmed from the players’ failure to adhere to the BCCI’s warning to join their respective Ranji teams. While Kishan went to Baroda to train with Pandya borthers, Iyer cited back pain as the reason for missing matches. The controversy escalated when a NCA medical official revealed that Iyer had no underlying injury.

Sourav Ganguly’s blunt reaction to Kishan-Iyer saga

In a candid interview with RevSportz, Ganguly expressed surprise at the duo’s reluctance to participate in domestic cricket. He underscored the importance of first-class cricket for centrally contracted players, labeling it as a fundamental expectation in the cricketing landscape.

“I think the BCCI wants them to play first class cricket. I am surprised why Shreyas Iyer has not played Ranji Tro?phy. It is a premier tournament and you are supposed to play. So, it is a? decision by BCCI and what they have thought right they have done. Every contracted cricketer must play first class cricket because that is the basic premise of cricket in this country,?/em> said Ganguly.

Sympathy for Ishan Kishan and a call for engagement

While supporting the BCCI’s decision, Ganguly specifically addressed Kishan’s situation during another interaction with Times of India. He expressed sympathy for the young cricketer and called upon BCCI officials, including Secretary Jay Shah, President Roger Binny, and the selectors, to engage with Kishan. Ganguly emphasized Kishan’s potential and questioned whether his absence from first-class cricket had any adverse impact on his skill development.

“For someone like Ishan Kishan, BCCI secretary Jay Shah, president Roger Binny, and the selectors need to speak to him. All this while he has played Ranji and then played white-ball cricket. Has it made him a poorer player? It hasn’t,” said th?e former India captain and ex-BCCI president.
