Younis Khan, the legendary Pakistani batter, has shed light on a harrowing experience following the death of Bob Woolmer, the Pakistan cricket coach, in 2007. Notably, Woolmer was found unconscious in his hotel room in Jamaica shortly after Pakistan’s unexpected exit from the ODI Cricket World Cup. His death, i?nitially shrouded in suspicion, was later ruled natu?ral causes.

The aftermath of Bob Woolmer’s passing

In a recent interview, Younis described the aftermath of Woolmer’s passing as ‘torturous’ for the Pakistani team. Younis stated that Woolmer could have elevated the Pakistan cricket team to new heights. He also disclosed that following Woolmer’s death, the players were moved to a different island and interrogated by the Jamaican authorities for three days.

“It was like a torture for us there. While I fully understand the responsibilities a player has to show as an ambassador of his country, it should be the other way round… authorities must also look after us,â€?/em> said Younis while speaking to a Pakistani TV channel.

The relationship between Younis and Woolmer

Younis expressed his close relationship with Woolmer, highlighting their daily routine of discussing cricket after matches or practice sessions. However, on the night of Woolmer’s death, Younis did not join him as usual because he was deeply upset over Pakistan’s loss to Ireland and his own poor performance, having been dismissed for a duck. Distraught, Younis isolated himself in his room. The following morning, Woolmer’s absence at breakfast was noted, and it was later revealed that he had passed away.

“I was very close to Bob (Woolmer) and it was our daily routine to sit down together after a match or nets to discuss cricket. Unfortunately, the night he passed away, we didn’t sit together as we had lost to Ireland. I was also out for a duck and was very upset with myself. So, I went to my room and locked myself in. Next day, I didn’t see him at breakfast and later we learnt about his death,” added Younis.

Speculation and controversy surrounding Woolmer’s death

Notably, Woolmer’s d??eath sparked widespread speculation and controversy. Initial reports suggested that he might have been murdered, with theories ranging from match-fixing conspiracies to foul play by disgruntled fans or associates. The Jamaican police conducted a thorough investigation, initially treating the death as suspicious. However, after several months of inquiry, including an inquest and multiple autopsies, the case was eventually closed with the conclusion ??that Woolmer died of natural causes, specifically from heart failure.

The West Indies are set to host South Africa for a three-match T20I series starting on Thursday (May 23), at Sabina Park in Jamaica. This series will act as a crucial final dress rehearsal for both teams ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. The last encounter between these sides saw the West Indies clinch a 2-1 ser??ies victory in South Africa in March 2023.

Absence of key players due to IPL 2024

However, both teams will be without several key players who are currently engaged in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 . For the West Indies, regular captain Rovman Powell, along with Alzarri Joseph and Sherfane Rutherford, will miss the series due to their commitments in the IPL. Additionally, star players Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran have been rested to manage their workload.

Leadership changes and squad adjustments

In the absence of Powell, Brandon King will take on the r??ole of captain for the West Indies. This presents an opportunity for emerging players to showcase their skills and stake a claim for a spot in the World Cup squad.

Similarly, South Africa will also be missing several pivotal players such as David Miller, Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Tristan Stubbs, Heinrich Klaasen and Keshav Maharaj. With these absences, Rassie van der Dussen, who has not been included in South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad, will lead the team. This series offers him a platform to prove his leadership skills and for other fringe players to impress ahead of the global tournament.

Notably, on March 8, as many as 50,000 made-in-India vaccines had reached Jamaica. After that, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness ha??d appreciated efforts made by the Indian Government for the much-needed s??upport.

“I am extremely pleased to report that yesterday afternoon, we received our first shipment of 50,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine donated by the Government of India. Chris Gayle has been tested negative for coronavirus, after reportedly coming into contact with COVID-19 positive Usain Bolt.

The ‘Universe Boss’ had recently attended Bolt’s birthday party after which his coronavirus test was conducted.

Gayle will soon be seen exhibiting his magic in the 13th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) scheduled to begin from September 19 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Not to mention that If Gayle was tested positive for the deadly disease, his chances of travelling to UAE in order to join Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) squad would have been jeopardized.

But, luckily for the cricket fans, the batting powerhouse announced on social media that he has been tested negative twice.

Gayle took to Instagram to inform about the COVID-19 tests

“Couple of days ago. 1st Covid-19 test… Before travel, I need 2 negative test,” one of Gayle’s posts read on Instagram.
