While cricket is a sport loaded with excitement and unprecedented developments, it is not every day that an astonishing catch changes the course of the game on its head. Something of a similar sort happened during the opening ODI encounter between Sri Lanka and Australia when Asitha Fernando outmatched all odds to send Jake Fraser McGurk back to the pavilion. The dismissal not only shoc?ked the cricketing world but changed the entire Australian approach towards the run chase as the visitors saw defeat in sight for the first time during their current tour to Sri Lanka.

Asitha Fernando stunned Jake Fraser McGurk to mark the end of his innings

The incident occurred during the 3rd over of the Australian innings. The visitors were already suffering since opener Matthew Short was dismissed by Asitha in the very first over of the run-chase on a duck. McGurk and top-order batter Cooper Connolly were tryi??ng to bring their team back into the game, but fate had decided otherwise for? Australians this time around.

On the 4th delivery of Asitha’s over, a short-length ball came as a shock to McGurk, who had already committed himself on the front foot. The explosive Australian opener tried to adjust to the length of the ball but was too late in doing so as the ball took an edge from his bat while he was trying to close its face and went straight to Asitha who took a remarkable follow-through catch to dismiss McGurk.
The dismissal was?? consequential s??ince it gave Australia another major setback and turned the tide of the match in Sri Lanka’s favor. The visitors were out of options they were not able to recover from the early breakthroughs throughout the run-chase.

Sri Lanka’s determined bowling effort secured a win against Australia

In the game, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. While at one point it appeared as if the horror show from the Test series continued for the home side a valiant 127-run knock from skipper Charith Asalanka in adverse situations saved the day for Sri Lanka with the bat and paved the way f??or the team to reach a competitive total of 214 runs in 46 overs.

In response, Australia appeared on the back foot ever since the beginning of their innings. Wickets kept falling at regular intervals for the visitors who could not cope in front of a determined and relentless attack from Sri Lanka’s bowling unit. Maheesh Theekshana was the star for the home side with the bowl as he clinched 4 wickets. Other bowlers like Dunith Wellalage and Fernando also fairly supported him by taking ?2 wickets each.

For Australia, wicket-keeper Alex Carey and all-rounder Aaron Hardie did try to put up some resistance but failed to capitalize on the hard-built momentu??m. The visitors were bowled out on 165 runs in 33.5 overs, resulting in a win for Sri Lanka by 49 runs.

In a significant setback, Mitchell Starc has withdrawn from the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the UAE, citing personal reasons. The announcement forces Australia to make substantial changes to their squad, with Steve Smith stepping in to captain the team.

Starc’s withdrawal compounds existing injury concerns for key players Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, as well as Mitchell Marsh, and the recent retirement of Marcus Stoinis. This means Australia will be without their entire frontline pace attack from? their 2023 World Cup-winning team.

Cricket Australia respects Mitchell Starc’s decision

Cricket Australia has respected Starc’s request for privacy and has not disclosed further details regarding his decision. Starc, who showed signs of discomfort during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, has returned home and will also miss the two-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.

“We understand and respect Mitch’s decision,” said Chair of Australia’s men’s selectors George Bailey in his official statement. “Mitch is deeply respected for his commitment to international cricket and the priority he places on performing for Australia. His well documented ability to play through pain and adversity, as well as forgoing opportunities in other parts of his career to put his country first should be applauded. His loss is of course a blow for the Champions Trophy campaign but does provide an opportunity to someone else to make a mark on the tournament.”

The Australian team has been a force to reckon with in limited-overs cricket. Against all odds, the Aussies managed to win the ODI World Cup 2023 in India and have dominated white-ball cricket throughout its history. With a remarkable performance in its recent ODI endeavors and success against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Australia has now announced its squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 to be held in Pakistan and the UAE.

The Australian squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 features several experienced campaigners and young prospects in its team. However, the selectors did not give some bright Australian talents who were impressed with their cricketing prowess in the Indian Premier League (IPL) an opportunity to display their talents in Austr?alian colours in the prestigious tournaments.

In light of Australia’s squad list for the Champions Trophy 2025, here is the list of 4 Australian players who featured in the IPL but were not selected for the Champions Trophy 2025.

4 IPL stars who were not given a place in Australia’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad list

1) Jake Fraser-McGurk (Delhi Capitals)

After an explosive domestic season in Australia and several impressive displays with the bat in the Big Bash League, Jake Fraser-McGurk made his IPL debut in the 2024 season for the Delhi Capitals (DC). The explosive young batter played 9 matches for the Capitals and scored 330 runs for the franchise. One of the most memorable innings that the 22-year-old played was the remarkable 84-run knock against Mumbai Indians (MI) off 27 balls in an impressive display of his batting abilities. However, the youngster had struggled with the bat during the current domestic season, scoring consecutive low scores for Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League (BBL). Australian chief selector George Bailey has cited that McGurk has time on his side and the squad already has a lot of t??op-order batters as the reason behind not selecting him.

2) Tim David (Mumbai Indians)

After representing the Mumbai Indians in 37 IPL matches, Australia’s dynamic batter Tim David marked a return to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) during last year’s mega auction. Despite his reputation as an explosive finisher in T20 cricket, David failed to secure a spot in Australia’s Champions Trophy squad, with the selectors opting for a lineup packed with versatile all-rounders. His struggles in the 50-over format played a key role in this decision, as he has managed to score only 35 runs in ODIs at a dismal average of 11.2. The lackluster performance underscores his difficulty adapting to the demands of the longer format, leaving him sidelined for the marquee event. While his T20 prowess remains undisputed, David’s ODI record leaves much to be desired, making him an unlikely candidate for Australia’s Champions Trophy campaign.

3) Cameron Green (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)

Cameron ?Green made headlines ahead of the 2023 IPL when Mumbai Indians secured his services for an astounding INR 17.5 crore, making him the second most expensive overseas player in IPL history. That season, he showcased his potential by smashing his maiden IPL century—a scintillating and unbeaten knock against Sunrisers Hyderabad while opening the innings. In IPL 2024, Green turned out for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, scoring 255 runs in 12 innings a??cross 13 matches. However, his promising run has been overshadowed by injury concerns.

Green reported lower back pain during Australia’s tour of the UK in September, with scans later revealing a stress fracture. Cricket Australia identified a “unique defect in an adjacent area to the fracture” that exacerbates the issue. This significant setback has ruled him out of Australia’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad, leaving the talented all-rounder to focus on recovery and rehabilitation.

4) Spencer Johnson (Gujarat Titans)

Renowned for his skill in making the new ball dance, Spencer Johnson turned heads when the Gujarat Titans (GT) snapped him up for a staggering INR 10 Crores in the 2024 mini-auction. The towering left-arm pacer, a familiar figure in the Big Bash League, is set to don the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) jersey in the upcoming IPL season. Despite his domestic and franchise cricket success, Johnson’s struggles with consistency on the international stage have seen him miss out on a spot in Australia’s Champions Trophy squad. His raw talent and ability to trouble batters with swing and pace remain unquestionable, but lapses in form at the highest level have hindered his ascent. While his IPL stint presents an opportunity for redemption, Johnson will need to deliver consistently to solidify his place in the national setup.
