In a major disappointment for England cricket fans, young all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been officially ruled out of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a hamstring injury. This development comes as a blow to England’s preparations for the tournament, which is set to commence on February 19 in Pakistan.

Jacob Bethell’s promising start cut short

Bethell, who made his international debut in September last year, showcased his potential in the first One Day International (ODI) against India in Nagpur. The 21-year-old played a crucial knock, scoring a well-?composed fifty. However, he experienced pain in his upper left leg post-match, leading to a scan that confirmed a suspected tear. He is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks.

Jos Buttler confirms Bethell’s exit from the tournament

England’s captain, Jos Buttler, confirmed the severity of the injury while speaking after England’s loss in the second ODI against India. Buttler reckoned that Bethell is one of the exciting players in the English lineup and his ruling out is indeed disappointing.

“I’m pretty sure (Bethell) has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy, to be honest. That’s really disappointing for him. Obviously, he played nicely the other day and has been one of the really exciting players. It’s a shame that injury is going to rule him out,” Buttler said during the post-match presentation.

Impact on England’s squad

Bethell’s absence creates a void in England’s batting depth, spin options, and fielding strength. Known for his left-arm spin and exceptional fielding skills, he was expected to play a crucial role in England’s Champions Trophy campaign, which begins against Australia on February 22 in Lahore.

Top-order batter named as replacement

To cover for Bethell’s absence, England have drafted in Tom?? Banton as his replacement. Banton, who last represented England in 2022, offers strong top-order batting skills and can also provide wicketkeeping backup. He has been included in the squad for the remaining ODIs against India and is expected to feature in the Champions Trophy squad as well.

As the cricketing world turns its gaze towards India, anticipation builds for the highly awaited three-match ODI series between India and England. Set to commence on February 6, 2025, at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur, this series promises to be a thrilling encounter, showcasing some of the best talents in international cricket. With both teams looking to fine-tune their strategies ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, fans can expect an exhi??la??rating display of skill, strategy, and sportsmanship.

The stage is set for a blistering showdown at Nagpur

The first ODI will take place at the iconic Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, a venue that has seen India perform remarkably well in ODIs, winning five out of six matches since its inception in 2009. The lone defeat came against South Africa in 2011, a statistic that adds to India’s home advantage. England’s only appearance at this venue was during the 2011 World Cup against the Netherlands, where they emerged victorious. As the teams prep??are to battle it out on the pitch, the stakes a??re high for both sides.

Both teams possess potent bowling line-ups that could dictate the outcomes of matches. India’s pace attack, featuring Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah (who is expected back for the third ODI), will aim to exploit any weaknesses in England’s batting lineup. Meanwhile, England’s bowlers like Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid will look to contain India’s explosive batting order.

A series with a great significance

This ODI series is not just about pride; it serves as critical preparation for both teams ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy later this month. With India’s recent T20I success against England (4-1), they will aim to carry that momentum into ODIs. Conversely, England seeks redemption after their T20 series defeat and aims to build confidence with strong performances.

The 34th match of the Big Bash League (BBL)|14 between Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Renegades at Bellerive Oval was a nerve-wrack??ing encounter, with both teams fighting till the very last over.

The Hurricanes, chasing 155 for victory, managed to secure a dramatic win by four wickets in a last-over thriller, thanks to explosive contributions from Tim David and an impactful bowling spell by Riley Meredith.

Jacob Bethell’s lone heroics

Asked to bat first, Melbourne Renegades set a total of 154/7 in their 20 overs. The highlight of their innings was Jacob Bethell, who played an outstanding knock of 87 runs off?? 50 balls??. Bethell’s innings featured 8 fours and 4 sixes, keeping the Hurricanes?bowlers under pressure throughout.

However, the Renegades’ middle order failed to build on his solid foundation, and they struggled to accelerate in the latter stages of the innings. Meredith was the standout bowler for Hobart, claiming 3 crucial wickets for 36 runs in his 4 overs. Support from skipper Nathan Ellis and Mitchell Owen, who each took a wicket, further restricted the Renegades’ scoring.

Tim David’s explosive finish secures victory for Hobart Hurricanes

In response, Hobart Hurricanes started their chase cautiously, with Nikhil Chaudhary (36 off 27) and Matthew Wade (36 off 23) anchoring the innings. Their solid partnerships at the top kept the required run rate under control, but the Renegades bowlers, led by Bethell, kept the pressure on. Bethell’s 2 wickets in his 3-over spell caused some middle-order stirs, and wickets at regular intervals meant the match was tightly poised as the Hurricanes approached the target. Fergus O’Neill, Callum Stow, and Tom Rogers each took a?? wicket??, but they were unable to stop the Hurricanes from keeping up with the chase.

With the match heading into the final overs, Tim David, the middle-order batter, played an explosive came?o, scoring 24 runs off just 15 balls. His aggressive strokeplay, which included 2 sixes and a four, saw the Hurricanes home with 2 balls to spare, finishing at 155/6. His invaluable contribution under pressure sealed the win for Hobart and confi??rmed their place in the BBL 2024-25 playoffs.

Despite the loss, Bethell was named Player of the Match award for his brilliant all-round performance. His 87-run innings helped the Renegades post a challenging total, and his two wickets were vital in keeping the Hurricanes?chase under control. However, it was the Hurricanes’ timely execution with both bat and ball that ultimately made the difference in this thrilling contest.

Paris bowled a slower delivery at 113.7 km/h that deceived Bethell, who missed his attempted pull shot and was struck on the thigh pad. The ball trickled away towards the leg side, prompting Jonathan Wells to call for a quick single.

Paris, displaying incredible presence of mind and agility, sprinted across and executed a no-look backhand f??lick at the non-striker’s end. The clash between Melbourne Renegades and Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League 2024-25 went to its absolute best as Jacob Bethell had a special shot? in store for the home fan??s to enjoy and put his team in a commanding position against Strikers.

Jacob Bethell smashed the ball into the stands

Bethell arrived on to the crease as Strikers invited the home side to bat first after winning the toss. After opener Jake Fraser McGurk and Tim Seifert were dismissed early, the responsibility ?of carrying the Renegades off to a respectable total fell into the hands of Bethell and Josh Brown. The two batters after some struggle, managed to sail through the Renegades total to 80 runs in the 11th over.

Seeing the two set batters, the Strikers skipper opted to test the two with some leg spin and Cameron Boyce was called to bowl the 11th over. Boyce restricted the Renegades batter with 4 dots but bowled a loose 5th delivery to Bethell. The middle-order batter wasted no time to punish the bowl and smacked it towards leg side for a towering 96-metre six. It was the first and only si?x of Bethell’s innings as he was dismissed l??ater on scoring 21 runs off 21 balls.

Michael Vaughan may have hung his boots as a player a long time ago, but when it comes to Ashes the fire of a true Englishman comes back to life in him. Something of a similar so?rt happened in the studios of the Herald Sun Sport. After the end of the Test match against New Zealand, the former c?aptain of the England cricket team came up with a combined XI of Australia and England for the next Ashes series.

Michael Vaughan picks an interesting combined XI with several Aussies

Away from bias towards his own nation, Vaughan added several Australians in his preferred combined XI squad. Taking a jibe at the selection capabilities of Vaughan, his co-host Kerry O?Keeffe, a popular broadcaster and former Australian cricketer c??alls it a ‘ridiculous selection.?‘The skull?/strong> as he is popularly called, O’Keeffe was particularly amused at the selection of Jacob Bethell at no.3.

O’Keeffe also disagreed with Vaughan’s reasoning behind picking Harry Brooks over Travis Head and excluding Steve Smith. While the former England captain included a number of English batters, he did pick up a number of Australian pacers in his squad including the likes of Mitchell Stark, Josh Hazelwood and Pat Cummins
