In the second match of the Ireland Women tour of West Indies 2023, the West Indies emerged victorious by 8 wickets and clinched the 3-match series at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia on Thursday. After winning the toss, Ireland?? elected to bat first but struggled to build momentum throughout their innings.

The Irish side posted a total of 113 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Apart from Matthews, Rashada Williams made a steady contribution of 16 runs, while Shabika Gajnabi and Chinelle Henry provided valuable support with scores of 17 and 22 runs, respectively. Delany was the lone wicket-taker for Ireland. West Indies Women achieved the target in 16.4 overs, finishing at 114 ru?ns for the loss o??f 2 wickets.

With this win, West Indies took a 2-0 lead in the series, displaying their strength and skill on home soil. The third and final match of the series will give an o?pportunity for the hosts to register a clean sweep while Ireland shall be eager to bounce back to record a consolation victory.

Ireland will tour West Indies for a three-match ODI and as many T20I series commencing from June 26. Notably, all the matches on the tour will b?e held at Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia and will be part of the ICC Women’s Championship that determines the qualification for the Women’s Cricket World Cup.

Cricket Ireland announced the 15-member squad for the white-ball series on Friday (June 9) and confirmed that Laura Delany will continue to lead ??the side. The board ??also revealed the departure time of the team.

“Laura Delany will captain the team, and the squad will depart for St Lucia on We?dnesday June 21,�/em> said Ireland Cricket in their press release.

It is worth mentioning that Laura has so far played 49 ODI matches for?? her country and amassed 869 runs. Meanwh??ile, the Irish captain has registered 983 runs in 89 T20I matches.

Speaking about the team combination to Cricket Ireland, the Ireland Women’s cricket team coach Ed Joyce informed that Aimee Maguire had got her maiden call-up in the national side, whereas all other players have got some experience and played a few matches in their career.?? He even talked about registering their first win in ICC Women’s C??hampionship. However, Joyce confessed that it would not be an easy task for his team as they don’t often play this format.

“In terms of team selection, Aimee Maguire has come into the squad for her first tour.?? She’s a really exciting young left-arm spinner �it’s a role we are really trying to strengthen. The rest of the group have played and toured before, and despite the average age of the squad is still less than 24, there’s still plenty of experience withi??n the group,�/em> said Joyce.

“If we play well, we’re going to be really competitive, and we’re really hoping to get our first win in the ICC Women’s Championshi??p. We’ve found that format of the game really tough, whic?h is understandable considering we don’t play very much of it. But, we definitely have the tools to win out there. It’s just about whether we can put it all together on the day,�/em> he added.

Cricket West Indies (CWI), on Friday, announced the match schedule and venue for the upcoming home limited-overs series against Ireland Women. All the matches will take place at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St. Lucia, spanning from June 26 to July 9.

Notably, the ODIs in this series carry immense importance, as they play a vital role in earning valuable points for the ICC Women’s Championship. The outcomes of these matches will directly influence the qualification process for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, which is scheduled to take place in India.

Regarding the preparation for the upcoming series, CWI’s High-Performance Manager Graeme West emphasized the importance of thorough planning and clear game strategies, which aim to ensure that the team executes their plans effectively and plays winning cricket. He also highlighted the thrilling match between the two teams at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in February, stating Ireland’s women’s cricket team has made significant progress in recent times.

“Ireland have shown great improvement in recent times and the game between the two sides in February at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa was a thriller. We will need to prepare well for both series with very clear game plans, the squad will get time in St Lucia prior to the first ODI to establish the key roles and focus areas that each player will be required to execute in order to play winning cricket,” said Graeme as quoted by Windies Cricket.

Graeme expressed his excitement about bringing international Women’s Cricket back to St. Lucia, mentioning the island is witnessing the emergence of several talented young female players and hoping the upcoming games will serve as an inspiration for more girls to get involved in cricket.

“It’s exciting to be taking international Women’s Cricket back to St Lucia, the island is developing a number of exciting young female players and we hope the Ireland games can inspire more girls to get involved and start their own cricket journeys,” added Graeme.
