England limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan achieved a world record on Tuesday (August 04) during the third and final One-Day International (ODI) against Ireland. Morgan leapfrogged former Indian captain MS Dhoni to become the player with most sixes in international cricket as captain.

It all happened in the 12th over of England’s innings bowled by Joshua Little when Morgan sent a ball over the square-leg boundary for a maximum. The 33-year-old has now 213 sixes to his name whereas Dhoni had 211 while captaining the ‘Men in Blue’.

After Morgan (213) and Dhoni (211), former Australian captain Ricky Ponting is on the third place in the list with 171 sixes whereas former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum has 170 maximums in his account. Also, Morgan has just taken 163 games to register his name in the record books.

Most sixes as captain in international cricket:

  • 213 – Eoin Morgan (163 matches)
  • 211 – MS Dhoni (332 matches)
  • 171 – Ricky Ponting (324 matches)
  • 170 – Brendon McCullum (121 matches)
  • 135 – AB de Villiers (124 matches)

Last year, Morgan led England to their maiden 50-over World Cup triumph. During the mega showpiece event, the Dublin-born played some crucial knocks to help his side dominate the rest of the teams. The left-handed batsman was the leading run-scorers for the English team. He played 11 games and amassed 371 runs, including a magnificent 148-run knock against Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, in the ongoing third ODI against Ireland, Morgan (106) slammed his 14th century. It took just 78 deliveries for the Irish-turned-British cricketer to reach the ton.

Most hundreds for England in ODI cricket:

  • 16 – Joe Root
  • 13 – Eoin Morgan (He slammed one hundred for Ireland in 2007 against Canada)
  • 12 – Marcus Trescothick
  • 9 – Bairstow, Roy, Buttler, Pietersen

England would be eyeing a clean-sweep against Ireland after winning the first two matches of the series.

After winning the first One-Day International (ODI) of the three-match series against Ireland, England defeated the visitors in the second ODI as well to clinch the first limited-overs series post coronavirus pandemic.

It was a breathtaking show from England’s attacking opener Jonny Bairstow, who completely demolished the Irish bowling attack on Saturday (August 01) at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. The 30-year-old went on to score a jaw-dropping 41-ball 82 runs knock to make sure England captured the series easily.

Bairstow slammed 14 fours and two sixes during his destructive innings. Speaking about maximums, during the eighth over of England’s innings bowled by Andy McBrine, Bairstow went downtown and smashed a scintillating six. McBrine bowled a slow delivery outside off-stump, and Bairstow picked the length early as he came down the track, got close to the ball and sent it over long-off for a maximum.

Here’s the video:

With the six, Bairstow completed his ODI career’s 12th half-century. Not only that, but the wicket-keeper batsman also managed to score joint-fastest fifty in ODIs for England.

Fastest fifty for England in ODIs:

  • 21 ?Eoin Morgan v AUS, Trent Bridge 2018
  • 21 ?Jonny Bairstow v IRE, Southampton 2020*
  • 22 ?Jos Buttler v PAK, Trent Bridge 2016

The Bradford-born also reached the 3000-run landmark in ODI cricket and became the joint quickest Englishman to do so. Bairstow reached the milestone in 72 innings.

Fewest innings to 3000 ODI runs for England:

  • 72 ?Joe Root/ Jonny Bairstow*
  • 76 ?Graham Gooch/ Jason Roy/ Kevin Pietersen
  • 82 ?Nick Knight/ Marcus Trescothick
  • 84 ?Alastair Cook
  • 85 ?Allan Lamb

Apart from Bairstow, Sam Billings (46 not out) and David Willey (47 not out), made crucial contributions to take the hosts over the finish line with 17.3 overs to spare.

Earlier, Ireland posted 212/9 in 50 overs, thanks to youngster Curtis Campher (68) who scored his second fifty in the series and took his side to go past the 200-run mark. Simi Singh and Andrew McBrine also assisted well with their scores of 25 and 24 respectively.

Ireland’s young sensation Curtis Campher once again stole the show in the second One-Day International (ODI) against England at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. South Africa-born Campher notched up his second successive half-century of the three-match series.

Due to Campher’s inspirational knock (68), the visitors managed to go past the 200-run mark. The 21-year-old batsman had few handy partnerships with lower order which helped Ireland to post a decent total.

Highest score at no 7 for Ireland in ODIs:

  • 68 ?Curtis Campher*
  • 60 ?Garry Wilson
  • 59*?Curtis Campher
  • 54 ?John Mooney

Campher also became the first Ireland player to score 50+ scores in his first two ODI innings. Before him, current English skipper Eoin Morgan during a stint with the Irish team was at the top with his first two innings ?99 and 41.

Most runs added by no. 7-11 for IRE in ODIs:

  • 128 v England, Belfast 2006
  • 119 v England, Southampton 2020*
  • 118 v Zimbabwe, Harare 2010
  • 113 v Sri Lanka, Dublin 2016
  • 113 v England, Southampton 2020 (1st ODI)

Earlier, England’s star with the ball in the first ODI, David Willey, shimmered once again as he removed both Irish openers cheaply. Apart from Willey, Saqib Mehmood also bagged two wickets. However, the real winner was leg-spinner Adil Rashid, who claimed three scalps by giving away only 34 runs in 10 overs.

Rashid also completed 150-wickets in ODI cricket for England. He became the third quickest Englishman and first spinner to achieve the milestone.

Fastest to 150 ODI wickets for England:

  • 95 ?Stuart Broad
  • 97 ?Darren Gough
  • 102 ?Adil Rashid*
  • 115 ?Jimmy Anderson
  • 126 ?Andrew Flintoff

The first ODI series post coronavirus pandemic kicked-off in Manchester between England and Ireland on Thursday (July 30), where the hosts won the contest by 6 wickets.

England were playing in the absence of their core players like Ben Stokes, Joe Root, Jofra Archer and Jos Buttler, still the Eoin Morgan-led side managed to trounce their neighbouring team easily.

In the first ODI England opted to bowl and the Irish top order collapsed severely. However, then lower-order batsman Curtis Campher rose to the occasion and played an unbeaten knock of 59 runs. He was well assisted by Andy McBrine who played a crucial 40-run knock. The duo helped their side to post 172 runs on board.

In response, the English batsmen did not have a comfortable start as they lost their top three within 59 runs. But, Sam Billings (67 not out) and Eoin Morgan (36) stepped up and guided their side to cross the line with 22.1 overs to spare.

Now the teams would be focusing on the second ODI which will be played on Saturday (August 1) at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. The match will start at 11:00 AM local time (10 AM GMT).

After the successful Test series, England will now host the first One-Day International (ODI) series post coronavirus pandemic. The Eoin Morgan-led side will take on their neighbours Ireland in the three-match ODI series beginning from Thursday (July 30) at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.

It is going to be a crucial series for both the teams as it will be a part of the recently-announced ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. Each point the Irish team gets in the Super League would cement their place in the World Cup qualification. Whereas, for England, it will be an opportunity to try out new players in the absence of some of their ODI regulars who will be busy in fulfilling their red-ball assignments.

Also, this is the first ODI series that England will play in home conditions after their historic World Cup triumph at Lord’s in July 2019. All three matches against Ireland will take place in Southampton due to the biosecurity protocols. Just like the recent Test series against Windies, there will be no spectators in the stadium.

England vs Ireland Probable XIs:

England

Since the Test players are not permitted to get out of the biosecure bubble, the ODI side has a different look altogether. Fans will miss the magic of Jos Buttler, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer and Mark Wood.

However, Jonny Bairstow and Joy Roy will be seen along with Tom Curran, who in the absence of regular bowlers, will more likely to lead the pace attack featuring David Willey and Saqib Mahmood. Meanwhile, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid will form the spin bowling attack.

James Vince will bat at No. 3 in Root’s absence, while Sam Billings and Tom Banton are expected to play the role of finishers.

Predicted XI: Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow (wk), James Vince, Eoin Morgan (c), Sam Billings, Tom Banton, Moeen Ali, David Willey, Tom Curran, Adil Rashid, Saqib Mahmood

Ireland

James McCollum and Paul Stirling, are expected to open the innings, followed by current skipper Andrew Balbirnie and former leader William Porterfield at No.3 and 4.

Kevin O Brien, as usual, will be Ireland’s trump-card down the order at No. 6, whereas the experienced duo of Boyd Rankin and Josh Little will lead the bowling attack.

Also, Balbirnie on the eve of the game has confirmed that Ireland would likely have a bowling all-rounder in the form of Simi Singh at 7.

Predicted XI: Paul Stirling, James McCollum, Andrew Balbirnie (c), William Porterfield, Gary Wilson (wk), Kevin O Brien, Simi Singh, Barry McCarthy, George Dockrell, Josh Little, Boyd Rankin.

Here are the fantasy XI suggestions:

Fantasy Suggestion #1:

Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Eoin Morgan, Andy Balbirnie, Paul Stirling, Moeen Ali, Simi Singh, Saqib Mahmood, David Willey, Boyd Rankin, Adil Rashid and Josh Little.

Captain: Jonny Bairstow, Vice-Captain: Boyd Rankin

Fantasy Suggestion #2:

Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, James Vince, William Porterfield, Paul Stirling, Tom Banton, Simi Singh, Tom Curran, David Willey, Adil Rashid and Josh Little

Captain: Jason Roy, Vice-Captain: Paul Stirling

Pitch Report

The wicket at Ageas Bowl generally produces a good batting track for limited-overs cricket. The pitch is likely to offer even bounce and minimal seam movement. It could turn out to be a high scoring game but still the captain winning the toss would probably like to field first.

After the conclusion of the ongoing Test series against West Indies, England will host Ireland for a three-match ODI series. It will be the first international white-ball contest since the COVID-19 pandemic hiatus.

The series will mark the commencement of ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have announced their 14-member squad for the three-match affair.

England skipper Eoin Morgan will resume his captaincy duties with Moeen Ali as his deputy. Key players such as Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Joe Root and Ben Stokes remain unavailable due to their engagement in the ongoing Test series against the Caribbeans. It prohibits them from joining the ODI squad while maintaining bio-secure protocols.

David Willey, who missed out on England’s triumphant 2019 ODI World Cup campaign, made his way back into the fray.

Also, Reece Topley, who first made an English appearance in 2016, makes a comeback in the side, after battling with injury woes. Topley was sensational in the domestic T20 tournament last year as he picked up 17 wickets in just 11 games for Sussex. He will be competing with Willey for a place in the lineup.

Swashbuckling wicket-keeper batsman, Sam Billings, who last featured in an ODI back in 2018, also returns to the side. Although, Billings did feature in the T20I series against New Zealand last year.

ECB also named their three reserve players who will remain with the squad at Ageas Bowl. If any player is found ill or sustains an injury during the series, fast bowlers Richard Gleeson, Lewis Gregory or batsman Liam Livingstone will be called up.

Squad:

Eoin Morgan (c), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Tom Banton, Sam Billings, Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Joe Denly, Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Reece Topley, James Vince, David Willey.
