In a surprising twist during the 3rd and final ODI between Ireland and South Africa, South Africa’s white-ball batting coach JP Duminy was seen field?ing during the last over of Ireland’s innings on Monday (October 7). The retired cricketer, renowned for his sharp fielding skills during his playing days, came on as a substitute as several South African players were affected by the extreme heat in Abu Dhabi.

JP Duminy’s moment of brilliance on the field

Duminy, who played over 300 matches for South Africa across all formats, delivered a remarkable display of fielding as he dived in the final over of Ireland’s innings. The moment unfolded when Ireland’s Harry Tector attempted a reverse swat off Andile Phehlukwayo’s delivery. As the ball turned sharply after pitching, Duminy’s quick reflexes saw him dive to stop the ball, preventing the Irish batters from taking extra runs. Despite being retired, Duminy’s agility and instinctive reaction reminded fans of his exceptional fielding brilliance during his international career. His effort brought a sense of nostalgia, as Duminy was known for his fielding finesse, having taken 155 catches in 326 international matches.

Ireland’s strong batting display

Earlier in the match, Ireland’s captain Paul Stirling chose to bat first after winning the toss, and the Irish team capitalized on the decision with a strong start. Stirling and Andy Balbirnie formed a solid 101-run opening partnership in 23.2 overs. Stirling led the charge with a captain’s knock of 88 off 92 balls, supported by vital contributions from Harry Tector (60), Andy Balbirnie (45), Curtis Campher (34) and Lorcan Tucker (26), helping Ireland post a formidable 284/9 in their 50 o??vers.

South Africa’s struggle in reply

South Africa’s chase faltered early as they lost three wickets within the first five overs, reducing them to 10/3. Jason Smith fought back with a gritty 91, but the Irish bowlers, backed by Stirling’s clever field placements, kept the pressure on throughout the innings. In the end, South Africa was bowled out for 215 in 47 overs, falling short by 69 runs. Stirling’s all-around performance earned him the Player of the Match award, while South African pacer Lizaad Williams, with 11 wickets in the series, was named Player of the Series despite the Proteas’ 2-1 series victory.

In a spirited display, Ireland claimed a 69-run victory over South Africa in the third and final OD??I of the series at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, ending the tour on a positive note. After losing the first two matches, Ireland bounced back to deny South Africa a clean sweep in ??the series, thanks to an all-round performance led by key contributions from Paul Stirling, Harry Tector and a disciplined bowling attack.

Paul Stirling and Harry Tector lead the charge

Ireland elected to bat first, and the captain Paul Stirling set the tone for a competitive total with a well-constructed innings of 88 off 92 balls, including 8 fours and 3 sixes. His partnership with Andy Balbirnie, who contributed 45 off 73, laid a solid foundation for Ireland. Curtis Campher’s 34 off 36, and Harry Tector’s aggressive 60 off 48 further propelled Ireland to a total of 284/9 in 50 overs.

South Africa’s bowlers had a mixed day, with Lizaad Williams standing out, claiming 4 wickets for 56 runs in his full 10 overs. Ottniel Baartman and Andile Phehlukwayo also chipped in with two wickets each, but the rest of the bowling attack struggled to contain Ireland’s batters, allowing them to set a challenging target.

South Africa collapse despite Jason Smith’s heroics

Chasing 285, South Africa got off to a disastrous start, losing early wickets in quick succession. The top order crumbled under the pressure, with Ryan Rickelton (4), Reeza Hendricks (1) and Rassie van der Dussen (3) falling cheaply, leaving South Africa reeling at 10/3. Kyle Verreynne provided some resistance with 38 off 36 balls, but the real standout of the innings was Jason Smith, who fought valiantly with a splendid 91 off 93, hitting 9 fours and 4?? sixes.

Despite Smith’s lone battle, South Africa never recovered from their poor start. Ireland’s bowlers were disciplined, led by Graham Hume and Craig Young, who took 3 wickets each. Hume’s 3/29 and Young’s 3/40 were crucial in dismantling South Africa’s batting order. Mark Adair, Fionn Hand and Matthew Humphreys also contributed with a wickets each, and South Africa were bowled out for 215 in 46.1 overs.

Though the series ended 2-1 in f?avour of the Proteas men, the Irish side will take confidence from this 69-run victory.

Sheikh Zayed Stadium Pitch Report:

The pitch at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi is well-known for being bowler-friendly, providing assistance to both spinners and fast bowlers. As the match goes on, the pitch tends to slow down, making it tough for batters to adjust. This unpredictability often disrupts their rhythm, leading to mistimed shots and re?stricting their ability to score freely. The slowing nature of the wicket requires constant adaptation, making it challenging for batters to maintain a steady scoring rate.

In the 2nd ODI between South Africa and Ireland in Abu Dhabi on Friday (October 4), Tristan Stubbs smashed his maiden century, propelling South Africa to an imposing total of 343/4 in their 50 overs. Opting to bat first, South Africa began on a solid note before Stubbs aggressively took the Irish bowlers to the cleaners. Despite Ireland’s efforts to control the run flow, his knock was the highlight of South Africa’s innings, which saw significant contributions from other batters.

Tristan Stubbs’ arrival at the crease

Stubbs came to the crease with South Africa at 136/2 in the 24th over after Rassie van der Dussen’s dismissal. With a strong platform already laid, Stubbs wasted no time in settling down and began his innings by rotating the strike efficiently. As he built his partnership with Kyle Verreynne, Stubbs gradually shifted gears, hitting powerful boundaries and launching towering sixes that disrupted Ireland’s bowling plans. His intent was clear from the outset: to dominate the middle overs and accelerate as South Africa moved towards the d??eath overs.

A maiden century of sheer brilliance

Stubbs reached his century in just 75 balls, a testament to his clean striking and smart shot selection. His innings was laced with 8 boundaries and 3 sixes, showcasing his ability to blend finesse with brute power. His aggressive play in the final 10 overs significantly boosted South Africa’s total, as they amassed 97 runs during this period. Stubbs?innings was a perfect example of how to pace an ODI knock, starting cautiously before launching into full throttle in the latter half. He remained unbeaten on 112 from 81 deliveries, anchoring the innings through the middle overs and finishing with a flourish.

South Africa’s dominant batting display

South Africa’s innings was built on a series of steady partnerships, beginning with the opening pair of Ryan Rickelton and Temba Bavuma. Rickelton was the first to fall after a fluent 40, while Bavuma had to retire hurt on 35 after looking in good touch. Van der Dussen and Verreynne ensured that the scoring didn’t slow down, adding vital runs in the middle. Verreynne’s contribution of 67 off 64 balls was instrumental in setting the stage for Stubbs’ late assault. Wiaan Mulder also chipped in with a quickfire 43 off 34 balls, providing the perfect support to Stubbs during the death overs. Together, South Africa’s top and middle order ensured they crossed the 300-run mark comfortably.

Ireland’s struggles with the ball

Ireland’s bowlers, despite some initial breakthroughs, struggled to contain the onslaught from Stubbs and Mulder. Craig Young was the pick of the bowlers, picking 1/79 in his 10 overs, while Gavin Hoey (1/49) and Curtis Campher (1/22) managed to grab a wicket each. However, the Irish attack lacked consistency and failed to maintain pressure, especially during the final 10 overs. Andy McBrine was the most economical, conceding just 43 runs in his full quota of 10 overs while picking up Verreynne’s crucial wicket. Mark Adair and Graham Hume were taken to the cleaners, both conceding 79 runs apiece, and ??despite their efforts, the South African batters remained unpertur?bed.

Sheikh Zayed Stadium Pitch Report

The Sheikh Zayed Stadium pitch in Abu Dhabi is renowned for its bowler-friendly nature, offering support to both spinners and pacers. The pitch’s tendency to slow down the ball as the match progresses makes it a challenging surface for batters to navigate. This unpredictability can disrupt batsmen’s rhythm, leading to mistimed shots and limiting their ability to score freely. The slowing wicket demands constant adaptation from batters, making it difficult to maintain a consistent scoring rate.

In a thrilling first ODI between Ireland and South Africa, held at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, Lizaad Williams stole the spotlight with his bowling and a memorable celebration after dismissing former Irish captain Andrew Balbirnie. The match, part of the Ireland vs South Africa series in the UAE, saw South Africa claim a convincing 139-run victory, but it was Williams’ performance, especially his unique reaction to Balbirnie’s dismissal, that captured the attention of the crowd.

Andrew Balbirnie’s struggle and Lizaad Williams’ perfect delivery

The crucial moment came in the 8th over of Ireland’s innings. Balbirnie, who had been struggling to find rhythm, faced the sixth ball from Williams, only to misjudge a full delivery just outside off-stump. Balbirnie attempted a drive on the up, but with minimal foot movement, he left a considerable gap between bat and pad. The ball kissed the inside edge and crashed into the off-stump, sending the bails flying. Balbirnie, who never looked fully settled at the crease, was dismissed for 20 off 28 balls, with two fours and a six to his name.

Lizaad Williams’ unique celebration lights up the game

Williams, who was visibly excited, immediately broke into a unique celebration that added to the drama of the dismissal. Instead of the usual fist pump or roar, Williams celebrated in his own style, wearing a virtual crown after pushing his leg down. This moment of exhilaration was met with cheers from the South African players and fans alike,? adding a touch of flair to his already impressive performance. The celebration appeared to be a personal moment of triumph, reflecting the significance of the breakthrough for the team.

Williams’ impact on the game was significant, as he went on to finish with figures of 4/32 in 6.5 overs, dismantling the Irish middle order and ensuring South Africa’s dominance. Ireland’s batting collapsed under pressure, with only George Dockrell offering some resistance with a score of 21. They were bowled out for 132 in just 31.5 overs.

Earlier in the match, South Africa posted a competitive total of 271/9 in their allotted 50 overs, thanks to standout performances from Ryan Rickelton, who scored 91, and Tristan Stubbs with 79. Mark Adair was Ireland’s standout bowler, claiming 4/50. However, it was Williams’ bowling and unforgettable celebration that became the talk of the game.

South Africa claimed a comprehensive victory in the first ODI against Ireland in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), winning by 139 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. The Proteas showcased an all-around team performance, headlined by a brilliant 91-run knock from Ryan Rickelton and a devastating bowling display by Lizaad William??s, to secure a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

South Africa’s strong start

After winning the toss and electing to bat, South Africa set a challenging target of 271/9 in their 50 overs. Opener Ryan Rickelton was the standout performer for the Proteas, scoring a measured 91 off 102 balls, including seven fours and three sixes. His innings provided the foundation for South Africa’s total after early trouble in the top order.

South Africa lost Tony de Zorzi (12 off 14) and captain Temba Bavuma (4 off 4) cheaply, with Ireland’s bowlers getting early breakthroughs. Rassie van der Dussen was dismissed for a duck, leaving South Africa reeling at 39/3. However, Rickelton and middle-order batter Tristan Stubbs (79 off 86) built a crucial 152-run partnership for the fourth wicket, steadying the innings and allowing South Africa to recover.

Stubbs contributed significantly with his aggressive stroke play, smashing 2 fours and 4 sixes. His part??nership with Rickelton helped South Africa regain momentum. Late contributions from Bjorn Fortuin (28 off 34) and Lungi Ngidi (20 not out off 17) boosted the total, taking South Africa to a competitive score.

For Ireland, Mark Adair was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 4/50 in his 10 overs. He consistently troubled the South African batters, picking up crucial wickets, including the prized scalp of Stubbs. Craig You?ng also had a good outing, taking 3/45 in his 10 overs, while Graham Hume (1/42) and Andy McBrine (1/46) chipped in with important breakthroughs.

Despite their best efforts, Ireland’s bowlers couldn’t prevent South Africa from putting up a solid score on the board.

Ireland’s batting collapse

Chasing 272, Ireland’s innings never really got going, as they struggled against South Africa’s disciplined bowling attack. Williams was lethal with the ball, claiming 4/32 in his 10 overs and breaking through Ireland’s top order with pace and precision. Ngidi provided solid support, taking 2/35, while Bjorn Fortuin (2/28) and Wiaan Mulder (1/11) also contributed.

Opener Paul Stirling was dismissed for just 2 runs in his 400th international appearance, while captain Andy Balbirnie managed a fighting 20 off 28 balls, including 2 fours and one six. Curtis Campher als?o added 20 runs, but Ireland’s middle order crumbled under pressure. Harry Tector (12 off 9) and Stephen Doheny (3 off 8) were unable to settle in, leaving the Irish innings in tatters.

George Dockrell (21 off 32) and Adair (12 off 22) tried to offer some resistance in the middle order, but it wasn’t enough to recover from the early damage. Ireland was eventually bowled out for 132 in 31.5 overs, falling 139 runs short of the target.

Player of the Match

Ryan Rickelton was named Player of the Match for his crucial 91, which set the tone for South Africa’s commanding performance.

The second ODI is sc??heduled for Friday, October 4, at the same venue, where Ireland will hope to bounce back and level the series, while South Africa will aim to continue their winning momentum.
