Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris believes Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has the potential to outperform legendary Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga. Pathirana has been a standout player for CSK in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, taking seven wickets in six games.

Styris told Jio Cinema that the twenty-year-old CSK fast-??bowler might surpass Malinga. This season, Pathirana is bowl??ing at an economy of 8.2 and averages of 27.57; he is continuously bowling in the death overs for CSK.

“I think Pathirana could be better than Malinga. I accept that it’s a massive call because he’s too early in his career,” Styris said.

The 47-year-old added, though Pathirana’s accuracy is lower than Malinga’s, he still has the raw pace that can trouble batters. Styris further stated that Malinga was performing effectively when he was bowling at 145 kph. Malinga has 170 wickets in 122 games, making him one of the most effective bowlers to ever play in the IPL.

“He’s not as accurate as Malinga yet, but Malinga was at his best when he was bowling at 145kph. And he only had about three or four years where that was the case. When he had that speed, and then the change-ups came, you had to respect that pace. When his top speed was down to 135, you could probably look at the slower ball more and react to the Yorkers,” Styris added.

Pathirana, according to Styris, is useful for both CSK and Sri Lanka, and he naturally has a lot of speed. With his slinging action that resembles Malinga’s, the Sri Lankan pacer has bowled over 150kph several times this season.

“What we’ve seen with Pathirana is that he’s bowling at 145, 146, 148kph, so he has that natural advantage. He hits the yorkers pretty well. As he naturally evolves and gets more experience, he can hit those yorkers with that action as much as Malinga, but with a quicker speed and the ability for change-ups. He’s the exciting talent for Sri Lanka, and exciting talent for CSK,” the New Zealander added further.

Ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who is representing Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), has been fined for violating the code of conduct of the cash-rich league during RR’s thrilling match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Chepauk on Wednesday.

Apparently, Ashwin has faced action for his comments on the umpires’ decision to change the ball during CSK’s tense chase of 175. He was fined 25 per cent of his match fee for breaching the Code of Conduct.

Following the game, the Tamil Nadu tweaker criticised the umpires’ decision, saying his side was not consulted before the ball was changed. He further called for standard rules in the post-match presser after the all-round show that won him the Player of the Match award.

“Rajasthan Royals’ Ravichandran Ashwin has been fined 25 Percent of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 17 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on April 12,” read the IPL media release.

“Ashwin admitted to the Level 1 Offence under Article 2.7 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the release added.

Notably, the Level 1 Offence under Article 2.7 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct relates to “Public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in a Match or any Player, Team Official, Match Official or Team participating in any Match, irrespective of when such criticism or inappropriate comment is made.”

Ashwin, who picked up a couple of wickets for 25 runs and smashed a 22-ball 30 with the bat, expressed shock over the umpire’s decision.

He said: “I’m quite surprised the umpires changed the ball for dew on their own. Itโ€™s never happened before, and Iโ€™m quite surprised. Some of the decisions in this yearโ€™s IPL on the field have left me a little flummoxed to be honest. I mean, (it) left me flummoxed in a good or a bad way. Itโ€™s because I think what you need is a little bit of balance.”
