The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega-auction is expected to take place this November, and franchises have already made their mark by retaining key players. On Thursday (October 31), teams finalized their retentions, showcasing strategic moves and sizable expenditures to secure the core of their lineups.

Structured retention strategies and noteworthy retention

While most franchises focused on maintaining continuity, Punjab Kings (PBKS) took a unique approach, retaining only two players. This conservative tactic has left them with a whopping INR 110.5 crore auction purse, the largest among all teams, signaling aggressive plans for the upcoming auction. In contrast, Rajasthan Royals (RR) opted to keep six pivotal players, balancing their retention strategy with a remaining auction purse of INR 41 crore. The IPL governing body reportedly set retention caps at INR 18 crore, INR 14 crore and INR 11 crore. However, franchises displayed flexibility, retaining players at amounts tailored to perceived on-field value. This strategy allowed teams to hold onto crucial assets while remaining mindful of budget constraints.

As the IPL 2025 retention deadline approaches, the ten franchises are set to finalize their lists by 5 pm on Thursday, October 31. With a maximum retention limit of six players from the 2024 IPL squads, teams are gearing up for key decisions that will shape their auction strategies.

IPL 2024 Retention rules

Each team can retain up to five capped players and two uncapped Indian players, providing flexibility in maintaining a strong core while also making room for fresh talent.

One notable aspect of this retention window is the flexibility with overseas players. Teams have the option to retain any number of foreign players without a cap, meaning a franchise could theoretically build around an entirely international core if desired. However, each capped player’s retention comes with a fixed cost deducted from the team’s purse, making budget management vital.

The initial purse for each franchise will stand at â‚?20 crore. With capped players taking up substantial portions of this purse, each team will need to carefully balance star power with budget availability. Strategic retention is crucial, as retaining fewer than six players unlocks Right-To-Match (RTM) cards, allowing teams to reacquire specific players during the auction if they can outbid their competitors.

Another critical rule involves uncapped players, who carry a cost of â‚? crore each, influencing budget considerations substantially. If a franchise negotiates a contract with a capped player for less than their bracketed value, the purse deduction still aligns with the highest category bracket, underscoring the importance of strategic financial planning.

When and where to watch IPL 2025 retentions?

The IPL 2025 retentions event is scheduled for Thursday at 4 PM IST, with live broadcasts available on the Star Sports Network. For fans looking to stream the event online, JioCinema will provide live streaming, ensuring easy access to the retention announcements.

The players’ retention will mark the beginning of a dynamic season of team-building as the franchises prepare for the mega auction. With strategic moves on the line, fans can expect an exciting build-up to IPL 2025 as franchises work to secure the perfect blend of experience, talent and value.

The Gujarat Titans (GT) have almost locked in their retentions for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction, opting to keep Shubman Gill as captain, alongside several other key players. And now according to the Times of India report, in a remarkable gesture, Gill agreed to a lower salary to free up funds, ensuring GT could retain their core lineup and head into the auction with a competitive purse.

Shubman Gill’s strategic pay cut to strengthen GT’s retention strategy

Gill’s decision to take a pay cut stands as a rare and commendable step in IPL history, demonstrating his foresight and selflessness as captain. By sacrificing a portion of his earnings, Gill has made it financially viable for GT to retain their marquee players like Rashid Khan, who has been instrumental since their inaugural season in 2022. With the ability to retain up to six players, Gujarat are now expected to enter the mega auction with a well-balanced core and increased budget flexibility to acquire new talent.

“Shubman Gill has taken this step for the franchise as he wanted GT to enter the auction with as much money in the purse as possible. There were plenty of talented players in the existing pool and the captain taking a paycut has allowed the franchise to retain a lot of them. At such a young age, Gill has already started thinking as a leader and is in constant discussions about the mega auction, and the road ahead,” an IPL source was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

Gujarat Titans’ potential retention and rules under the new purse structure

Under the latest IPL retention rules, a team incurs a specific deduction for each player retained, impacting their auction purse, which is set at Rs 120 crore for the 2025 season. GT’s retentions could potentially include Rashid Khan, Gill and some other players. With Gill’s reduced salary enabling this strategy, Rashid will most probably expected to become the team’s costliest retention, while the Gujarat now have enough funds to bid aggressively in the auction. Teams can retain up to six players using the right-to-match (RTM) option if needed, allowing GT to hold onto talent while still building on their squad’s depth and versatility.

Gill’s transition into leadership and GT’s future prospects in IPL 2025

After taking over as captain in 2024 when Hardik Pandya was transferred to the Mumbai Indians (MI), Gill has shown considerable leadership growth despite GT’s challenging season, finishing in eighth place. His willingness to accept a lower pay signals a long-term vision and dedication to enhancing team cohesion and financial flexibility, critical factors as GT reshapes its squad post-Pandya.

Recognized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for his leadership potential, the 25-year-old was also named vice-captain for India’s ODI and T20I teams, a testament to his rising influence in the sport. With the Titans set to explore additional squad options in November’s overseas auction, Gill’s leadership is already laying the foundation for a formidable and well-rounded team.

Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody has shared his insights on the potential retention strategy for Punjab Kings (PBKS) ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.

Tom Moody predicts Punjab Kings’ retention strategy for IPL 2025

With the deadline for finalizing retention lists approaching on October 31, franchises are busy strategizing their squad selections. Moody believes that the Preity Zinta-owned franchise should prioritize retaining key players like Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran, Kagiso Rabada and Jitesh Sharma through the Right to Match (RTM) option.

“For Punjab Kings, I don’t think I would retain any players, certainly not capped players, but I’d be looking to use the Right To Match option for players like Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran and Rabada. Jitesh Sharma is another one I’d consider using the Right To Match for in the auction,” Moody was quoted as saying to Star Sports.

In addition to these key players, Moody suggested retaining uncapped players like Shashank Singh and Harpreet Brar. Shashank impressed with his powerful batting in the IPL 2024 season, while Brar’s left-arm spin proved to be a valuable asset for the team.

“When it comes to uncapped players, there are a couple of good players I’d like to secure before the auction: Shashank Singh, who is a solid middle-order power-hitter and had a great season last year, and Harpreet Brar, the left-arm spinner,” Moddy added.

Punjab Kings’ struggle in IPL 2024

Punjab Kings will be aiming for a strong performance in IPL 2025 after a disappointing 2024 season. The team has yet to secure an IPL title and struggled last season, failing to quality for the playoffs. In IPL 2024, they played 14 matches, winning only five and losing nine, which left them with just 10 points and a ninth spot in the standings. With the mega auction around the corner, PBKS will be looking to bring in top players to build a competitive squad for the 2025 season.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have almost finalised their retention list ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

KKR to release Shreyas Iyer?

Key players like Andre Russell, Rinku Singh and Sunil Narine are expected to remain with the Kolkata-based franchise. However, in a surprising move, the defending champions seemed to part ways with their captain Shreyas Iyer, despite his last season’s success in leading the Knight Riders to the title triumph.

Before the cut off date for the IPL 2025 retentions, ie. October 31, all the ten franchises are under immense pressure to lock in their match winners. Teams are allowed to retain a maximum of six playing, including the Right to Match (RTM) card option, pushing them to make strategic choices in balancing their budgets.

KKR to retain Rinku Singh ahead of Shreyas

While KKR would ideally like to maintain their winning lineup, the 2025 auction rules compel management to make difficult calls. Despite his captaincy role, Shreyas’s future with the team appears uncertain.

According to RevSportz, KKR are set to prioritize players like Rinku, Russell, Narine, Varun Chakravarthy, Harshit Rana and Ramandeep Singh ahead of Shreyas. Harshit and Ramandeep can be picked as uncapped players at INR 4 crore each, saving a considerable amount of money for the franchise.

During the BCCI owners’ meeting in July, KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan advocated for a system that focuses solely on RTMs rather than full retentions, aiming to preserve teams’ financial flexibility. KKR’s management, led by CEO Venky Mysore, is now carefully considering their strategy around who to retain outright and who to secure via RTM. Known for his adept player management skills, Mysore is exploring all options to maintain KKR’s core, balancing financial constraints with player performance and fan expectations.

Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg has revealed his picks for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)  ahead of the IPL 2025 retentions. With the mega auction around the corner, teams are strategizing their retention and release plans to build a formidable squad. In Hogg’s opinion, LSG will likely retain key players who performed well in previous seasons, with a focus on balance and leadership.

Brad Hogg’s IPL 2025 retentions for LSG

Leading the list is wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran, who has become one of LSG’s most crucial players due to his explosive batting and match-winning capabilities. His ability to turn the game around in the middle and death overs makes him a prime candidate for retention.

All-rounder Krunal Pandya is another name Hogg expects LSG to retain. Known for his versatility with both bat and ball, Pandya’s leadership skills, having led the team in KL Rahul’s absence last season, also add immense value to the squad. His presence ensures balance in the team, making him a strong contender for retention.

Also READ: Will Rohit Sharma play for LSG in IPL 2025? Fielding coach Jonty Rhodes drops a massive clue

Captain KL Rahul is naturally a top pick, with Hogg emphasizing his importance as the team’s batting anchor. Despite recent concerns regarding his strike-rate, Rahul remains integral to LSG’s plans as a top-order batter and skipper, providing stability and leadership to the squad.

Young pacer Mayank Yadav rounds out Hogg’s retention picks. Yadav’s potential and development have impressed LSG, and Hogg believes that keeping young talent in the squad is vital for future success. His raw pace and ability to perform under pressure give him the edge to be among the key retentions.

Who is Hogg’s pick for the RTM?

When it comes to the Right to Match (RTM) card, Hogg suggests LSG might use it for South African wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock. De Kock has been a consistent performer for LSG, offering solid starts at the top of the order. His experience, both behind the stumps and with the bat, makes him a valuable asset, and using the RTM to bring him back could be a smart move by the franchise.

As the IPL 2025 auction draws closer, teams will be making tough decisions on their retention strategies. Hogg’s insight on LSG’s likely retentions adds to the growing excitement surrounding the upcoming auction.

As the anticipation builds for the IPL 2025 mega auction, former cricketer Aakash Chopra has shared his insights on the probable retentions for the Mumbai Indians (MI). Following a disappointing season in 2024, where MI became the first team eliminated from the tournament, the franchise is keen to retain its core players and rebuild for future success.

Aakash Chopra’s insights on IPL 2025 Retentions for MI

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Chopra highlighted the return of Mahela Jayawardene to the MI setup, suggesting that changes are underway. He emphasized that MI aims to retain key players based on their current form and potential impact.

“Mahela Jayawardene is back. So some changes have started happening. The Mumbai Indians are trying to retain their core as well, considering the form Hardik Pandya is in, and they have Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma/Ishan Kishan,” Chopra stated.

MI’s probable retention list

Chopra outlined several players that MI is likely to retain ahead of the auction:

Jasprit Bumrah: Recognized as one of the world’s best fast bowlers, Bumrah’s retention is almost certain due to his pivotal role in MI’s bowling lineup.

Hardik Pandya: Despite a challenging season in 2024, Pandya’s leadership and all-round performance during India’s T20 World Cup triumph make him an essential retention.

Also READ: IPL 2025 – 3 key reasons why Hardik Pandya should remain the captain of Mumbai Indians

Suryakumar Yadav: As a key figure in both MI and India’s T20 setup, Yadav’s batting prowess and captaincy experience add immense value.

Rohit Sharma: Although there are rumours about his potential departure from MI, his legacy as a five-time IPL-winning captain makes him a significant consideration.

Tilak Varma/Ishan Kishan: Both young talents have shown promise and could be retained based on their performances.

Chopra noted that MI might opt for a combination of five retained players along with one uncapped player, allowing them to enter the auction with INR 79 crore remaining in their purse.

“After that, they have Nehal Wadhera. I mean they have plenty. So they might retain 5+1 and reach the auction after spending 79 crores. They are the ones who are able to manage because the six players they will retain are going to be part of the XI, and all will be Indians. So they can still pull it off,” he added.

Chopra also pointed out that retaining these six players would ensure they remain integral parts of the playing XI. This approach aligns with MI’s historical success model while allowing flexibility in future acquisitions.

As the deadline for players’ retention approaches on October 31, 2024, all eyes will be on how the Mumbai-based franchise navigate this crucial phase. With a blend of seasoned stars and emerging talent, MI hopes to bounce back and reclaim their status as one of the dominant forces in IPLT20.
