The Indian Premier League (IPL) and the T20 World Cup are two of the most admi??red cricket competitions in the world. Winning either tournament is a significant achievement for any cricketer, and both trophies are highly coveted.

The IPL, known for its glamorous and competitive nature, brings together the best talent from around the world. The T20 World Cup, on the other hand, is a global competition where national pride is on the line. Both tournaments have a profound impact on a player’s career and are dream milestones for any modern-era cricketer.

Handful of players to bag both trophies

Despite the dreams and aspirations of many cricketers, only a select few have managed to win both the IPL and the T20 World Cup. Achieving this rare double is a testament to a player’s skill, consistency, and ability to perform under pressure. While many great players have won both trophies, most of them required multiple attempts.

For instance, Rohit Sharma won the T20 World Cup in his first attempt but needed one season to secure an IPL title (2009). Similarly, MS Dhoni lifted the T20 World Cup in his debut ?attempt but took three IPL seasons to taste victory (2011).

Only a few achieved the feat in their debut seasons

Among the handful of players who have won both trophies, an even more exclusive club consists of those who achieved this feat in their debut seasons. This remarkable accomplishment has only been achieved by three players, showcasing their extraordinary talent and impact on the ?game. These players include two Indian stars and one from the West Indies, who have etched their names in cricketing history.

Sanju Samson (India)

Sanju Samson‘s achievement is nothing short of extraordinary. He won the IPL in his first season with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2012. However, Samson didn’t get single match. Similarly, Samson was part of the Indian team that recently won the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados. Remarkably, this was also Samson’s first T20 World Cup tournament, and like the IPL, he did not play any matches. His unique journey highlights his luck and the strength of the teams he was part of.

Sunil Narine (West Indies)

Sunil Narine, the former West Indies all-rounder, is another player who achieved this incredible feat. Narine made his T20I debut in 2012 and won the T20 World Cup with the West Indies team later that year. His debut IPL season in 2012 was equally impressive, where he played a pivotal role for KKR by taking 24 wickets and helping them secure the championship. Narine’s contributions with both bat and ball have made him a standout performer in T20 cricket.

Yusuf Pathan (India)

Yusuf Pathan, the former Indian all-rounder, made his T20I debut in the inaugural T20 World Cup final against Pakistan in 2007 and won the championship with the Indian team. The following year, Pathan was part of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the inaugural IPL season.

Under Shane Warne’s inspirational captaincy, RR won the title, with Pathan playing a crucial role. He scored 435 runs from 16 games at a brilliant strike rate of 179.01, including four half-centuries. Pathan’s explosive batting and key performances were instrumental in his team’s success.

In a recent revelation, MS Dhoni, the iconic captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), shed light on his decision-making process during the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) auction in 2008. Despite being offered the coveted status of a marquee player by certain franchises, Dhoni made a calculate?d risk to e??nter the auction, a move that eventually proved to be lucrative.

MS Dhoni’s calculated risk

During the buildup to the IPL 2008 m??ega-auction, Dhoni was approached by several franchises with offers to become a marquee player. However, instea?d of accepting this guaranteed status, the Ranchi-born star opted to take a gamble by entering the auction. His rationale behind this decision was grounded in the anticipation of securing a higher price through competitive bidding.

“Initially when five marquee players were announced, I was also approached to become a marquee player of a certain franchise. I had to make a quick decision. I thought that I was the captain of the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team, I would easily go for 1 million dollars. So, let’s take a risk. Let’s enter the auction. If two out of three teams that don’t have marquee players get interested in me, along with the other franchises, this will increase the chances of your price going up,” Dhoni told Star Sports.

The psychology of auctions

Explaining his rationale, Dhoni highlighted the psychology behind auctions. He reasoned that by not being designated as a?? marquee player, franchises might b?e more inclined to bid aggressively for him, ultimately driving up his price.

“If you become a marquee player, the franchise owner thinks that if I am buying a player for a certain amount, then I will have to pay 10 or 15 per cent more to the marquee player. So I thought that for me, at this point in time, it’s better to enter the auction – if any franchise without a marquee player buys me, then I have more chances of getting more money. And when the auction happened, when CSK bought me, I went for 1.5 million dollars (6 crore approx). So the thinking worked at that point of time,” added Dhoni.

Dhoni’s foresight and strategic approach paid off handsomely during the auction process. CSK acquired his services for a whopping INR 6 crore (approximately 1.5 million dollars), making him the highest-paid player in the bidding war. This strategic move not only ensured Dhoni’s financial gain but also set the stage for his illustrious journey with CSK in the IPL.

CSK’s success under Dhoni’s leadership

Dhoni’s tenure as captain of the Super Kings has been nothing short of legendary. Under his astute leadership, CSK has emerged as one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, clinching the title on five occasions. As the countdown to IPL 2024 begins, Dhoni remains a pivotal figure in CSK’s lineup, poised to lead the Yellow Army with his trademark finesse and strategic acumen.

In a startling development, veteran Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) pacer Praveen Kumar has levied serious allegations against former IPL chairman Lalit Modi. The nature of these accusations has not been explicitly detailed, but they have raised eyebrows within the cricketing community. Praveen, known for his co??ntributions to Indian cricket, has chosen? to make these claims, prompting speculation and interest among fans and cricket enthusiasts alike.

Praveen Kumar shed light on why he wanted to play for Delhi in IPL 2008

In a recent revelation, Praveen brought attention to the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2008), where he unintentionally ended up representing RCB. He elaborated on the incident, stating the reason behind his will to play for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) rather than RCB as Delhi was near his hometown (Meerut), and he did not like the food ??of Bengaluru.

“I did not want to play for RCB because Bangalore was quite far away from my place, I didn’t know English, and the food was not to my liking. Delhi is quite close to Meerut, which would have allowed me to travel to my home once in a while,” Praveen said in an interview with The Lallantop.

Praveen Kumar on Lalit Modi’s threat

However, accordi?ng to the 37-year-old, an RCB official presented him with a document to sign, and he complied without awareness of its contractual nature. A significant twist unfolded When Praveen expressed his reluctance to join RCB and conveyed his desire to play for Delhi. Lalit allegedly intervened by calling the right-arm seamer and delivering a career-threatening warning, adding a layer of complexity to the circumstances surrounding player selections during that particular IPL season.

“There was a person (RCB official) who made me sign a paper. I did not know it was the contract. I told them I wanted to play for Delhi and not Bangalore. Lalit Modi called me and threatened to end my career,” the UP-based cricketer added.

The entire cricket world was in shock when the news of Shane Warne’s sudden demise broke out. The legendar??y Australian cricketer passed away on Friday from a suspected heart attack in Thailand. The Victorian was found unresponsive in his v??illa, and despite the efforts of medical staff, he could not be revived.

Cricketers from across the globe paid their heartfelt tributes to Warne, including Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Notably, Jadeja had joined the Rajasthan Royals (RR) camp in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, when Shane Warne had shown his belief in Jadeja’s ability.

Jaddu, who smashed a tremendous unbeaten 175 on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali, recalled his stint when he played under Warne and?? also expressed his shock upon the demise of the spin wizard.

“It was shocking news. The moment I heard it, I was so sad, and I wasn’t feeling well. I found it difficult to believe that this can be true. When I first met him in 2008, he was already a legend, and I couldn’t believe that I would be playing alongside a player of Shane Warne’s stature,” said Jadeja after the end of the second day’s play.

“We were just coming out of our U-19s, and to share the dressing room with Warne was a huge thing for youngsters like us. He gave me a huge platform, and post U-19, it was a direct entry into the IPL,” he added.

Jadeja paid his tributes to Warne and mentioned that the Australian cricketer’s death also shows how uncertain life is.

“His death shows that there are no certainties in life. Anything can happen anytime, and this kind of news suddenly shocks you to ‘what the hell is happening?’ I want to pray to Almighty that his soul rests in peace,” Jadeja added further.

Australian spin sensation Shane Warne passed away on Friday from a suspected heart atta?ck in Thailand. Warne, who was one of the finest spinners of all-time, picked 708 wickets in Test cricket.

The spin wizard made his Test debut in 1992 against India and ended his illustrious career in 2007.

Even after his retirement, Warne continued the dominance in T20 leagues, starting with the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. In the inaugural season of the cash-rich league, the Victorian led the Rajasthan Royals (RR) side to the IPL title, defeating tournament favourites Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

After the tragic news of Warne’s death, the Royals franchise shared a heartfelt note to pay tribute to the ‘King of Spin’.

“Shane Warne. The name stands for magic. Our first Royal; a man who made us believe that impossible is just a myth. A leader who walked the walk talked the talk and turned underdogs into champions. A mentor who turned everything he touched into gold,” Royals wrote in a heartwarming note.

“We don’t have the words to express what we truly feel at the moment, but what we know is that the world is poorer today, as it will now exist without his smile, his brilliance, and his attitude to live life to its fullest. We’re completely heartbroken, as are millions of cricket fans all around the world.”

“Warnie, you’re forever going to be our captain, leader, Royal. Rest in peace, legend,” the note added further.

Warne played 55 matches in IPL and picked up 57 wickets at an average of 25.39, with 4/21 being his best. He ??also scored 198 ru?ns with the bat at a strike rate of 90+ , hitting 14 fours and 6 sixes.

Suresh Raina has been the leading run-scorer for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL. Raina has represented the same franchise for 11?? seasons since the beginning of the cash-rich league except on three occasions when the franchise was banned from the IPL in 2016 a?nd 17 and when he decided not to be a part of the T20 extravaganza in 2020.

Batting in the middle o?rder, the southpaw has been indispensable for his team and has ??steadied their innings on innumerable occasions.

Recently in a book titled “Believe”, the 34-year-old revealed that he was excited to be a part of the Chennai-based franchise alongside the-then Indian skipper MS Dhoni.

“The IPL auctions happened, and like every other cricketer in the country, I was waiting eagerly to know which team I would be playing for. I was elated to go to the Chennai Super Kings. It meant Mahi Bhai and I would be playing for the same team. I heard from him almost immediately after I was bought in the auction,” excerpts from the book read, reported by India TV.

Raina also divulged that Dhoni texted him just after he was bought by the franchise and told him that playing together would be fun. The CSK cricketer further added tha??t participating with the same team also strengthened their bond.

“He said, ‘Maza aayega dekh.’ There was a lot of attention on him, of course. And looking at some of the other figures whom Chennai had bought—Matthew Hayden, Muttiah Muralitharan, and Stephen Fleming—I was just delighted to be in the same team as them. The IPL strengthened my bond with Mahi Bhai even further,” the book further read.

The Meerut-born was p??icked up by CSK for INR 2.6 crores in the first edition, with his value aggravating with time to INR 11 crores during the 2021 season. Overall, Raina has amassed 5491 runs in the 200 IPL games he has played so far at an extraordinary strike rate of 136.89.

Earlier, legendary musician AR Rahman also dedicated a song to the duo.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 saw yet another title going in the cabinet of Mumbai Indians (MI) after they won the coveted troph?y f??or the record fifth time. Fans?? witnessed high-quality batting, spectacular bowling and fantastic fielding in the thirteenth season of the T20 extravaganza.

Speaking about batting, the 2020 edition was quite special for the stroke makers. On the slow tracks of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), batting was a cha??llenging task, but some top quality players made it look like a cake-walk and excelled with the willow.

Another Aussie Shaun Marsh was the first batsman to grasp the Orange Cap way back in 2008 – the inaugural season of IPL. Marsh, while playing for KXIP, had amassed 616 runs.

When it comes to scoring most runs in a single edition of the exciting league, then Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli tops the table.
