Former legendary cricketers Br?ian Lara and Ramnaresh Sarwan will guide the Windies batsmen ahead of the first two Test matc??hes against India.

Lara is an all-time great, while Sarwan was a fantastic player of his generation from the Caribb??ean, who knew how to lead from the front.

The two will be a part of the pre-series c??amp, to be held in Antigua before the first Test match.

Brian Lara and Ramnaresh Sarwan

They will share their vast knowledge and experience with the 13-member squa??d. Besides, the stalwarts of the game will also give some useful tips that will help the players to hone their skills.

West Indies and India will play the first Test from August 22 to August 26 at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in North Sound, Antigua. The second Test match will start from August 30 and end o??n September 3 at Sabina Park in Kings??ton, Jamaica.

There will be massive expectations from the likes of Shai Hope, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, John Campbell, Kraigg Brathwaite, and Darren Br?avo.

The series will also mark the beginnin?g of the ICC Worl??d Test Championship for both the teams.

Jimmy Adams, Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) Director of Cricket, expressed his gratitude to Lara and Sarwan for making time to groom the young batsmen.

“We have some good young batsmen in the team who we believe will form the future of West Indies cricket. We saw some very good signs of development earlier this year in the Test matches when we played so very well to beat England and we want to see them grow and become outstanding players for the West Indies,” Adams said in a statement issued by the Windies.

“We have taken the step to have Brian and ‘Ronnie’ work with these players, who have demonstrated a will to learn and succeed. We know they still have the passion and love for West Indies cricket and are eager to assist and share their information with the present generation.”

Brian Lara, 50, is the pride o??f the Caribbean and the leading run-getter for West Indies. He has notched up a total of 11,953 runs in 131 Test matches. His 400 not out against England in Antigua in the year 2004 will always be rememb??ered worldwide as the only quadruple century in Test history.

Brian Lara

Lara also holds the record of registering the highest first-class score of all time – 501 not out, which came while playing for Warwickshire in the English Country Championship.

Meanwhile, West Indies have faltered in the limited-overs format ??against India, losing both the T20I and ODI series. They will look to turn things around and bounce back in the upcoming Test series.

betvisa cricketINDvsWI – Cricket Times - betvisa live //betvisa68.com/2019/08/wi-vs-ind-carlos-brathwaite-shares-his-thoughts-ahead-of-the-3rd-odi/ Wed, 14 Aug 2019 09:10:09 +0000 //betvisa68.com/?p=31695

Despite winning only two ODIs out of their last 11, Carlos Brathwaite felt that the Men in Maroon weren’t performing as badly as shown by the stats. The West Indies T20I captain opened up about the team’s performance ahead of the must-win game against India.

“I don’t think we are that far away,” Brathwaite said after West Indies’ training session on Tuesday.

“We just continue to miss key points in the game. If we look back at the World Cup, it is the same thing. If we look at the game the other day, we weren’t cruising, but we were in a good position, and then we lost three or four quick wickets.â€?/em>

“We are just missing a few key moments that could have turned one or two loses into wins and make us look a little better, give us a little momentum, and start to try to win series more consistently.”

Chasing a target of 270 runs in 46 overs in the second ODI, West Indies were 179 for 4 when they lost another 4 wicke??ts far too? quickly. Their score was soon 182 for 8 before being skittled out for 210. This turned out to be a huge disappointment for Jason Holder and his boys especially after the 1st ODI was a washout.

West Indies

Brathwaite said it wasn’t a lack of intent, but a failure to execute their skills that had led to the losses.

“I don’t think it is belief per se. I think if you ask the guys in the dressing room if they believe they can win – I think they do believe they can win. The execution of that belief is lacking in key moments, like I said. So, I don’t think it’s a lack of belief or a lack of passion and in most cases it’s not even a lack of skill, but just executing what we want to execute the key moments of the game, which was the case in majority of the World Cup and this series so far.”

He believed that practice was the key to being consistent. But the all-rounder also?? mentioned that there was very little they could do in the ?middle of an international series.

“It’s practice. It’s conversation. If I am being brutally honest, there is not much we can change on the international tour. That is the challenge for the [domestic] franchise to be able to do enough work, get enough information from the guys at the top. And start implementing stuff. On the tour, we try to get the mind right, we try to, as a group, have conversations and honest conversations – not just patting them on the back but having honest conversations, sometimes even being harsh and try to become better players eventually.”

Carlos Brathwaite

As far as his own game was concerned, this is what he had to say –

“We are having a lot of honest conversations with the coaches and the staff and I think one thing that’s kept me back is my fitness. I am working very, very hard in the past 12 to 14 months on my fitness – I believe I can get a bit stronger as well.â€?/em>

“I think batting-wise, I have to reprogramme my thinking in thinking about hitting and swiping and batting properly. I think there has been a conscious effort for me to try to help the team as a batsman and a bowler and try to give myself the best chance for the team and try to help West Indies win cricket games.”

Everyone knows what Carlos Brathwaite is capable of. His 82-ball 101 against New Zealand in th??e World Cup would have done his confidence a world of?? good.

“I had a lot of time to bat. I had a clear thought process. I was working very hard off the pitch, as I am now, with the bat, in trying to do the right things and the simple things as long as possible. I had enough time so I could play myself in getting so at the back end when I normally come in to bat to start my innings I already had [faced] 40-50 balls.â€?/em>

“The challenge for me is that that situation won’t always present itself. Obviously, being at home, we have changed the combination a bit. There I played at seven [six], here at eight, nine or maybe seven – the thing I take away from that innings is the way I structured and built the innings which allowed me to kick off at the back end.”

Having trained ?hard to the co?re, Brathwaite said West Indies were all geared up for the third ODI, and were confident of making the series even-steven with India.

“We drew the last series against England at home as well. And then going into the last game it’s for us to get the batting in order – if we get good starts going into the back end that’ll give us a good chance.”

“I think the batting has much improved especially since the T20s and from the overall batting performance in the World Cup as well. But, we didn’t close it off. We batted well in the second game as well, it was about closing it off – hopefully that happens in the next game as well and for the lower half to close the game.”

I??ndia will face off against the West Indies in ?the 3rd and final ODI on August 14, Wednesday at Port of Spain.

Shreyas Iyer?? is making headlines for the right reasons and grabbing the attention of cricketing stalwarts.

One such stalwart is Sunil Gavaskar who believes that Shreyas Iyer is a better choice for batting at no. 4 in ODIs than Rishabh Pant. The former Indian captain feels Iyer should be given a permanent position in the Indian middle-order after his crucial knock in the second ODI.

The right-hander who has a couple of fifties in the five ODIs that he has played, made a robust comeback to the team after a year. He hit a classy 68-ball 71 that helped India beat the West Indies by 59 runs at the Queen’s Park Oval on Sunday.

shreyas iyer

“In my view, Rishabh Pant is much better like an MS Dhoni at 5 or 6 as a finisher because that’s where his natural game and natural flair will come into play,” Gavaskar told ‘Sony Ten’ channel.

“If India get to a great start with Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma batting for 40-45 overs, then Pant at No. 4. But if it’s a question of batting for 30-35 overs, then I think it should be Shreyas Iyer at No. 4 and Pant at No. 5.”

The 24-year-old built a 125-run partnership with skipper Kohli (120) after India lost Dhawan, Rohit and Rishabh Pant. The partnership turned out to ??be a match-winning one in the e??nd.

After Kohli was dismissed, Iyer batted beautifully and helped India post a com???petitive score of 279 on the board.

Showering heaps of praise on Iyer, Sunny Gavaskar said: “He has grabbed his opportunity. He came at No. 5. He had plenty of overs. He had the company of his skipper, Virat Kohli. Nothing quite like it because the skipper takes the pressure off you.”

Kohli and Iyer

“The best place to learn in cricket is the non-striker’s end. That’s what Shreyas Iyer was doing with Virat Kohli at the other end,” he added.

The former Little Master, who was a part of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, opined that the youngster deserve?d to get many more chances in ODI cricket.

“I think, if this doesn’t help him get a more permanent slot in the Indian middle-order, I don’t know what will,” the batting legend said.

“In the five matches, he played before this, he scored 2 fifties and hit a highest score of 88. He hadn’t done anything wrong to be left out of the 14 (15) (World Cup). But that’s in the past.”

“Now he has come back and scored a 71 in his first opportunity. So I think he will get a longer run.”

India will meet the West Indies for? the 3rd and final ODI at Port of Spain on Wednesday, August 14.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who has been named in India’s Test squad for the West Indies tour, is looking forward to playing some good cricket in the West Indies.

“I do not want to set goals or targets, put pressure on myself. I am bowling to a good rhythm, the ball is coming out nicely from the hand and I just want to continue in this vein,” Ashwin told The Hindu on Monday.

Speaking about his stint with Nottinghamshire in English County Cricket, the off-spinner said /p>

“I had a rewarding time with Nottinghamshire in the English county, was among wickets and runs. So the confidence is there.”

Ashwin test century

When asked if he was anxious whether he would make it to the Playing XI in the first Test, Ashwin replied /p>

“Not at all. I want to take it as it comes. Importantly from my side, I am fit and I am bowling well. And I can always bat.”

In 2016, the right-armer had a successful Windies tour. He scalped 17 wickets in ?the 4 Test matches that he played.

Talking about the unpredictable pitches in the Caribbean, he said, “The surfaces there can be a bit up and down. The bounce can be inconsistent. Some of the pitches can be on the quicker side too. So you got to adapt.”

The sp?in wizard, who is no mug with the bat, felt that one cannot just write off the West Indies at home.

“They defeated England at home in a Test series last year. They have a really good pace attack and some young, exciting batsmen like Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer. We cannot take them lightly.”

The Indian all-round?er was glad that something like the Test Championship had ?been introduced.

“It’s a step in the right direction. It gives a context and meaning to every Test series. After all, Test cricket is the most complete and testing form of the game.”

R Ashwin with teammates

Besides, he couldn’t wait to join his teammates.

“It will be great to be with the bunch again. There is nothing quite like playing for India. We dream of it when we are young. India has been playing some very good cricket. We have exciting times ahead.”

Ashwin concluded by saying that his mantra for getting wickets and scoring runs was to keep the m?ind light.

India?? beat West Indies by 59 runs in the secon?d ODI as Shreyas Iyer had a 125-run partnership with Captain Virat Kohli on S?unday, August 11.

The right-hander’s steady 68-ball 71 proved to be one of t??he two match-winning?? knocks, the other being Kohli’s elegant 120 runs off 125 balls.

India lost Dhawan early, while Rohit struggled before being dismissed. ?However, the Indian skipper looked solid right from the beginning.

Batting at No. 4, Rishabh Pant managed only 20 off 35 balls before getting out yet again to ?a rash shot.

virat kohli and shreyas iyer partnership

Soon after, Kohli and Iyer built a great match-winning partnership, and ?kep??t the scoreboard ticking by rotating strike. Not to forget, they balanced their defensive approach with aggressive biggies.

This is what the young bloke had to say after the match –

“I want to stay in the team for a while, the consistency is always important, I want to play well and contribute?? to the team,/em> Iyer said.

“It was a fruitful day. I knew I was going to do well, I played for I??ndia A and I played in these grounds, paced my in??nings well and think it went well./em>

“I decided that I wouldn’t take any risks, Virat told me that?? we needed to build a partnership and take the innings deep./em>

“He supported me very well, we took the ones and twos, hit the boundaries when it came. We decided 250 was a good score, obviously we got 30 runs extra.?? He told me to bat at least until the 45th over, I am thankful for what I managed,/em> he added.

On the other hand, Kohli praised the 24-year-old –

“He (Iyer) is a very confident guy and has the right attitude. Really got the tempo going and took the pressure off me. After I got out, he got the extra runs as well,” Virat said.

India lead 1-0, and will look ??to seal the series against West Indies in the third and final ODI on Wednesday, August 14.

National colors have to be earned, it’s something Sunil Gavaskar, the first batsman to reach 10,000 runs in Tests learned early in his life? with the sense instilled by his maternal uncle and former cricketer Madhav Mantri.

Joy Bhattacharya, the Kolkata Knight Riders director talked about an incident that typified the lesson learnt by Gavaskar as a young cricketer. He said, “Sunil Gavaskar was a commentator on the Indian tour of the West Indies in 2002. One of our younger cricketers had a fairly active night of passion and the lady involved demanded and got one of his India caps as a prize. A day later, she went to sign it from Sunny Gavaskar. He had one look at the cap and asked where she got it from. She refused to tell till he threatened to call the police and have her arrested. After he got the name, he stormed into the team bus, something he never does, and told the player in question exactly what he thought of the incident, and why he should be ashamed to ever wear an India cap again. Forget that poor man, in five minutes, the entire bus learned more about what playing for India meant than a thousand lectures.”

Since the name of that?? young player is still unknown, here is the squad of the Indian team on tour of West I?ndies in 2002 :

Sourav Gangul??y (c), Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Zaheer Khan, VVS Laxman, Dinesh Mongia, Sachin Tendulkar, Javagal Srinath, Sanjay Bangar, ??SS Das, Deep Dasgupta, Wasim Jaffer, Ashish Nehra, Ajay Ratra, Sarandeep Singh, Tinu Yohannan.
