Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma showcased his batting brilliance in a memorable Super 4 clash at the Asia Cup 2023 against Sri Lanka in Colombo. Team India emerged victorious with a 41-run triumph over the Islanders, securing their place in the tournament’s final. Rohit’s remarkable performance not only sealed India’s victory but also etched his name in the annals of cricketing history.

Rohit Sharma’s Milestone-Packed Innings

In a low-scoring contest, Rohit played a pivotal role, smashing a brilliant half-century, scoring 53 runs. However, his innings was not just about the match victory; it also witnessed several significant milestones:

10,000 ODI runs club: Rohit joined the elite club of batters with 10,000 ODI runs. He achieved this milestone when he reached 23 runs, sending a delivery straight over Kasun Rajitha for a six.

15th overall player: Rohit became the sixth Indian and the 15th player overall to enter the 10,000-run club in One-Day Internationals, further solidifying his place among cricketing legends.

Fastest to 8000 runs as an opener: During his innings, Rohit Sharma reached his 8,000th run as an opening batter in the 50-over format. His remarkable speed in achieving this milestone makes him the fastest opening batter to do so in ODI cricket.

Second fastest to 10,000 runs: Rohit’s achievement as the second fastest to reach 10,000 runs in ODIs is a testament to his batting prowess. He surpassed the legendary Tendulkar, who took 259 innings to achieve this mark. Kohli leads this list, having taken just 205 innings to reach the 10,000-run milestone.

Most sixes in ODI Asia Cup: Adding to his list of records, Rohit now holds the record for the most sixes (28) in the ODI Asia Cup. He surpassed the previous record held by Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi (26).

Team India got off to a solid start in the ongoing Women’s Asia Cup 2022 after registering a comfortable victory over Sri Lanka in their opening game on Saturday.

After being put to bat first at Sylhet Outer Cricket Stadium, India were in a spot of bother, losing both openers Shafali Verma (10) and Smriti Mandhana (6) for just 23 in 4 overs. Before the Islanders could capitalise further, star batter Jemimah Rodrigues and captain Harmanpreet Kaur stepped up to stabilise the innings.

Both Jemimah and Harmanpreet accelerated the run flow and kept finding odd boundaries at regular intervals. The pair went on to form a vital stand of 92 runs for the third wicket before the Lankans came back and got rid of Harman for a well-made 33 from 30 balls, including one six and a couple of fours.

Rodrigues also departed soon but did her job to ensure the Women in Blue reached a competitive total. The right-handed batter smashed 76 from just 53 deliveries, with the help of 11 fours and a maximum as India posted 150/6 on the board in their allotted 20 overs.

In response, Sri Lanka never really got their plans right as they were bundled out for 109 in 18.2 overs, losing the contest by 41 runs. Hasini Perera (30 off 32) and opener Harshitha Madavi (26 off 20) did something but couldn’t get decent support from the rest.

For India, Dayalan Hemalatha was their pick of the bowler, taking three wickets while conceding 15 runs in 2.2 overs. Apart from Hemlatha, Deepti Sharma (2/15) and Pooja Vastrakar (2/15) bagged two scalps each.

In shocking developments, former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara, on Thursday, was asked to record a statement, following initiation of alleged fixing probe during 2011 World Cup finals. One of the local newspapers, Daily Mirror, confirmed the report.

After a controversial toss, the Sangakkara led team opted to bat first and could not defend their total in front of hosts India.

The then Sri Lankan Sports Minister, of-late, has been very vocal about the need for an investigation for the final which the Islanders lost by six wickets.

In Mahindananda Aluthgamage words, on the eve of the game, the Lankan cricket team made four changes to the lineup without addressing the authorities.

Earlier, the investigators also summoned Aravinda de Silva to record his statements, who was the chief selector, at that time.

“I tell you today that we sold the 2011 World Cup final. Even when I was sports minister I believed this. In 2011, we were to win, but we sold the match. I feel I can talk about it now. I am not connecting players, but some sections were involved,?Aluthgamage told AFP.

Former Lankan great, and chief companion of Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardena, helped set up the Lions?total with his unbeaten knock of 103.

Mahela came in support of Sangakkara on Twitter by saying, “Is the elections around the corner Looks like the circus has started Names and evidence??/p>

To which Aluthgamage replied by saying, “Mahela has said that the circus has started. I don’t understand why Sanga and Mahela are making a big deal about this. I am not referring to any of our players.?/p>

Later, Jayawadena lashed back at the former minister with his tweet, “When someone accuses that we sold the 2011 WC naturally it’s a big deal because we don’t know how one could fix a match and not be part of the playing 11? Hopefully, we will get enlightened after 9 years…?/p>

The apex governing body, International Cricket Council (ICC) has said that it will look into the match-fixing allegations of the 2011 World Cup final, thrown by the then Sri Lankan Sports Minister.

The Sri Lankan cricket team met hosts India in the summit clash of the showpiece event at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The Lankans decided to make four changes to their team which featured in the semi-finals against New Zealand on the eve of the final.

Thisara Perera replaced an injured Angelo Matthews, while Suraj Randiv, Chamara Kapudegara, and Nuwan Kulasekara came in for Ajantha Mendis, Chamara Silva and Rangana Herath.

To which, the ex-sports minister, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, and the administration wasn’t intimated about.

“I would not involve the cricketers in this. However, certain groups were definitely involved in fixing the game. The team who played the final match was not the team we had selected, finalized and sent off,?the minister suggested.

“At the last moment, without the consultation of either me as the then minister of Sports or officials of the Sri Lanka Cricket Control Board, four new players had been included to the team,?added Aluthgamage.

“We look forward to talking to him to see if there are any matters worthy of investigation,?one of the ICC representatives stated while talking to Newswire.

Earlier, former Lankan great Aravinda de Silva also demanded a probe investigating the 2011 ODI World Cup final. De Silva affirmed that it is derogatory for cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, who won the prized title for his country.

Meanwhile, the then Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara rubbished the former minister’s claim and was seconded by Mahela Jayawardena who asked for pieces of evidence.

Mahela hit a sparkling ton in the final of the multilateral tournament, setting up a challenging total of 275 in front of the Indians. However, Lankan bowling fell short of the class of Indian captain MS Dhoni (91*) and Gautam Gambhir (97).

Sri Lankan veteran batsman Aravinda de Silva has demanded the ICC, BCCI and SLC for launching a probe looking into the match-fixing allegations regarding the final of the 2011 ODI World Cup. Aravinda was the Chairman of Selection committee at the time of the 2011 World cup in India.

De Silva felt that ‘no one should get away telling lies?and making accusations as grave as this. Moreover, Silva reckoned that allegations demean the Indian and Sri Lankan cricketers and management involved in the match.

The Lankan middle-order great, Aravinda, smashed a match-winning ton in the final of the 1996 ODI World Cup, which helped the Islanders win over Australia.

Earlier, the ex-sports minister of Sri Lanka, Mahindananda Aluthgamage demanded an investigation to look at the surprise changes made on the day of the final at Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

The Lions included Chamara Kapugedara in place of Chamara Silva, Thisara Perera in place of injured Angelo Matthews, Suraj Randiv in place of Ajantha Mendis; and Nuwan Kulasekara ahead of Rangana Herath, who played against New Zealand in the semi-finals of the tournament.

“Just like we cherished our World Cup victory, players like Sachin (Tendulkar) cherish these moments for the rest of their lives. I think in the interest of Sachin and the millions of cricket fans across India, the Indian government and their cricket board must initiate an impartial inquiry to see whether they have won a fixed World Cup,?De Silva was quoted as saying by The Sunday Times.

“When serious allegations like these are being made, it affects a lot of people. In this case not only us, the selectors, the players and the team management but Indian cricketers who deservingly won the world title. We need to clear this once and for all for the greater good of the game we love,?he added.

Lankan batting stalwarts, Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara also took to Twitter, delivering scathing blows to allegations made by the former politician.

“Here is a man who has no reputation or credibility trying to cast wild allegations at all those who were involved with that game. I am ready to face any inquiry. But these liars should not be spared. As I said they are tarnishing our hard-earned reputations,?concluded Aravinda.

Indian women’s team juggernaut remains unstoppable with their fourth consecutive win in the tournament. This time around, it was the Sri Lankan team who faced the wrath of India’s invincibility by a margin of 7 wickets.

Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu won the toss elected to bat first on a good batting track at Junction Oval in Melbourne. Followed by a meek start, the Lankan team found some solidity in the form of their captain’s knock of 33 off 24 deliveries.

However, the Lankans succumbed to relentless pressure from the Indian bowling attack. Wickets at regular intervals during the middle overs dampened Sri Lanka’s expectations of a challenging total in front of the mighty Indian batting line-up.

Player of the match, Radha Yadav starred for the Indian bowlers with her supreme spell of 4/23 in her four overs. India bullied the Lankans with their spin quartet.

Meanwhile, Rajeshwari Gaekwad was rewarded with a couple of wickets for her tight spell. Poonam Yadav, Deepti Sharma, and Shikha Pandey ended up with a wicket each as Sri Lanka limped to 113 for the loss of 9 wickets.

Coming out to bat, it was opener Shafali Verma yet again who stood tall with her array of strokes, compiling 47 off 34 deliveries, with seven boundaries and a maximum. She maintained her second place in the runs tally in the tournament without scoring a single half-century yet.

One of her shots in the match will be fondly remembered for a long time to come. Varma hit off-spinner Shashikala Siriwardene from behind her stumps from way outside the off-stump, towards fine-leg for a boundary.

Mandhana went back to the pavilion after adding a quick 17 off 12 deliveries, while the disappointing run of form continued for the Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur who scored just 15.

Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma hit the finishing blows in the match as India maintained their unbeaten run in the tournament. They are placed on the top of Group A.

While bowling a no-ball is a common sight, it becomes all the more frustrating for any team when they get denied a wicket because of the illegitimate delivery.

For Jasprit Bumrah, this happened for the second time this year, as Sri Lankan left-handed batsman Upul Tharanga survived despite being caught by Dinesh Karthik at gully during the first ODI of the series between India and Sri Lanka at Dharamsala on Sunday.

On the penultimate ball of the sixth over during Sri Lankan run-chase of 113 runs, Bumrah got some seam movement from down the leg side that squared Tharanga completely and took the outside edge of the blade towards gully region where Karthik was stationed. The Tamil Nadu lad went down and took a good low catch to send Tharanga packing.

However, India’s joy lasted just a few seconds as umpire Anil Chaudhary instantly went upstairs to check for a no-ball. The replays suggested that Bumrah’s foot was just on the line and Tharanga was given another lifeline.

Jasprit-Bumrah-No-ball

As a result, India didn’t get the third scalp as they would’ve hoped for and with that missed chance, the chances of Men in Blue’s winning went for a toss.

Also, Twitter users mercilessly trolled Bumrah for his no-ball as tweet after tweet poured in.
