The fervor of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final between India and Australia reached unprecedented heights, but for one family in Sahashpur village, the excitement took an unexpected turn. Anum Ara, the mother of Indian speedster Mohammed Shami, found herself? in the spotlight for an entirely different reason—she was rushed to a local hospital during th??e crucial match.

A village united in cricket fever

As the cricketing world fixated its gaze on the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Sahashpur village was no different. Friends, families, and cricket enthusiasts gathered to witness the summit clash between two cricketing giants. Among them was Anum, praying fervently for her son’s success on this grand stage.

A sudden turn of events

However, the atmosphere of joy quickly turned to one of concern as Anum Ara’s health took an unexpected hit. Nervousness and fever gripped her during the pivotal match, leading to a swift response from the Shami family and their close-knit circle of friends.

With the tension escalating, Anum’s relatives wasted no time, rushing her to a local hospital for immediate medical attention. The village, buzzing with cricket fever just moments ago, now echoed with prayers for the well-being of Shami’s beloved mother.

Update on Anum Ara’s health

Upon reaching the local hospital, Anum underwent initial treatment to stabilize her condition. Recognizing the need for more comprehensive care, she was soon transferred to an advanced health center. The updates from the medical front bring a sigh of relief—Anum’s condition is now reported to be stable.

“She was admitted to the hospital due to fever and nervousness. Now, her condition is normal.” Shami’s cousin Dr Mumtaz told Times of India.

Notably, India faced a heartbraking 6-wicket loss in the final against Australia. India could only manage t??o post 240 on the scoreboard before the Aussies chased it down in 43 overs with Travis Head smashing a brilliant century.

During Australia’s 2013 tour of India, all-rounder James Faulkner achieved a heroic feat of scoring of 29-ball 64* in the Mohali ODI.

The match is remembered for fast bowler Ishant Sharma‘s forgetful 48th over, where the visitors needed 44 runs off just 18 deliveries.

Faulkner smashed 30 runs in the over, which included four sixes, to take the momentum in favour of the Aussies. Australia went on to take 2-1 lead in the 7-mat??ch ODI series.

Now, looking back at the episode, Ishant has revealed about feeling like betraying his country, tagging it as a ‘turning point’ in his life.

“The turning point of my life came in 2013. Faulkner hit me for 30 runs in one over in an ODI in Mohali that Australia went on to win,” Ishant told Deep Dasgupta on Espncricinfo show, ‘Cricket Baazi’.

The lanky seamer from Delhi went on to add about him weeping for three weeks straight, over the phone in front of his gir?lfriend.

“At that time I felt I had betrayed myself and my country,” said Ishant, going on to reveal that he cried for two weeks after that Mohali ODI.

“For two-three weeks, I didn’t speak to anyone. I cried a lot. I am a very tough guy. My mother says she hasn’t seen a tougher person than me. [But] I called my girlfriend and cried on the phone like a child. Those three weeks were like a nightmare. I stopped eating. I couldn’t sleep or do anything else. You switch on the television and people are criticising you, which messes you up even more,” the Test specialist said.

“I laugh about it now and I consider it a blessing in disguise. Sometimes you need a jolt to understand your passion. After the Faulkner incident, I went through major changes in my life. After 2013, I started taking things seriously. Before that, if I had a bad performance, people would come and tell me ‘It’s okay, it happens.’ But after 2013, if someone came to me and said that, I wouldn’t listen. If I have made a mistake, I have made a mistake. I started taking responsibility for my actions. When you do that, you play every match to win it for the team,” Ishant concluded.

From there on, Ishant went on to become one of the most successful fast bowlers in Test cricket. Also, he has translated his rich form in white-ball cricket, representing the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IP?L.

Back in 2008, India heroi??cally won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and also lifted the Te??st Maze for the first time.

Therefore, the final match of the four-match Test series played at Nagpur holds a special place in th??e heart of every Indian cricket enthusiast on many accounts.

??India humbled a star-studded world-beating Australian team by a margin of 2-0. The?reby, seeking their vengeance for the loss in Australia at the preceding Down Under tour in the same year.

Also, the match was the last int??ernational appearance ??for former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly.

And thus, began the end of the era of Fab four of Indian batting. However, Dada and Co. ensured that Indian cricket was in the safe hands of MS Dhoni who already brought home iconic titles.

In a heartwarmin?g gesture, Dhoni asked Ganguly to captain India one last time, in the dying moments of the match. By then, In?dia already ensured their victory with one Aussie wicket remaining.

“As the match came to a close, MS Dhoni in a surprise gesture asked me to lead. I had rejected his offer earlier in the day, but could not refuse a second time. Ironically, my captaincy career had begun exactly eight years ??ago on this very day,Ganguly penned down in his autobiography ‘A Century is Not Enough

Here’s the video:

The special matc?h at the then-newly-built Vidarbha Cricket Association stadium in Nagpur was also auspicious for debutants, Jason Krej?za and Murali Vijay.

Krejza went on to break all records for debutants in Test cricket by picking up eight wickets, but India went on to post 441 runs, thanks to a Sachin Tendulkar ton.

India went on to win the match by a whopping margin of 172 runs. Earlier, India won the second Test match at Moh?ali and drew the games at Bangalore and Delhi.

In international cricket, there have been a series of instances when a bowler has had the better of a particular batsman on numerous occasions, thus making the batter a ‘bunny’.

For example, f??ast bowler Zaheer Khan and his record ag??ainst Graeme Smith, Yuzvendra Chahal repeatedly bamboozling Glenn Maxwell and many more.

Similarly, legendary off-spinner Harbhajan Singh had the better off Ricky Ponting on numerous occasions, in ?all formats of the game.

Also, the rivalry between the two on the field proved to be one of the high-octane ones in the history of Indo-Australian cricketing ties. Now, B?hajji has opened up to the time Ponting got dismissed by j??ust looking at his face.

“The first time I dismissed Ricky Ponting was in Sharjah. It was an ODI match and I got him stumped. After dismissing him, I said something to him that I didn’t know much about. My English wasn’t too good at that time, I had heard that word from a lot of people, so I also said that” Bhajji said on Star Sports’ show Cricket Connected.

Bhajji’s watershed moment in career arrived during the iconic 2001 Border-Gavaskar series, which India won by 2-1. Ponting’s dismal series involved him scoring three ducks in the series and amassing a paltry 17 runs in five innings.

“After that when the 2001 series happened it felt like he was not playing the ball but getting out just by watching my face. He was not focusing on the ball at all, if he was focusing on the ball I don’t think anyone would get out so many times and that too so easily,” the veteran spinner added.

The Kolkata Test match is primarily remembered for the marathon match-winning partnership between Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. However, it was the magic spell from Bhajji during the?? same game, which involved a hattrick, that turned the match on its head.

“Because of that, I got banned from the next match. But my memory is that when he got out and I signaled him to go out, he came towards me with his bat as though he was going to hit me. So, I got a bit scared if he would really hit me.” Harbhajan said.

Further, the Punjab tweaker revealed why Po??nting’s wicket during the i?nfamous 2008 Sydney Test was particularly special.

“My special celebration for Ricky Ponting was in Sydney. Because he had said that I have dismissed him a lot of times in India but it would be difficult to do so in Australia. There also I dismissed him off the first delivery, so I accompanied him almost to the pavilion, doing somersaults all along the way,” Harbhajan concluded.

When on the field, there was hardly any cricketer fiercer than former Indian opener Gaut??a??m Gambhir.

The elegant southpaw found a purple-patch during the 2008-09 season for which he was also awarded the ‘ICC Test Player of the Yeartrophy. The highlight of the-run scoring spree arrived during the 2008 Feroz Shah Kotla Test match betw??een India and Australia

In the third Test match of the 2008 Border-Gavaskar series, Gambhir scored his career-best 206, which consisted of 26 bo?undaries and a maximum.

VVS Laxman supported him well at the other? end and slammed an unbeaten 200. However, during Gambhir’s mega-knock, he was involved in sev?eral scuffles with Shane Watson as well as Simon Katich.

While taking a second run off a delivery from Watson, Gambhir seemingly elbowed the Aussie on his way back from the non-striker’s end. Later, Gambhir pleaded guilty of breaching ICC Code of Conduct and was slapped a one-match ban.

“Shane Watson! And the reason?? is I didn’t do that intentionally. Actually, I got banned after that game. A lot of people say that I elbowed him, but I didn’t do that purposely,Gambhir was quoted as saying in the Star Sports show ‘Cricket Connected

In Gambhir words, he adhered to advice dispensed by the then Indian head coach, Gary Kirsten.

“When I was going for the hearing to the match, Gary Kirsten told me to accept it as it is Chris Broad. He will give you extra sympathy and he is not going to ban you. I went inside wi?th Gary Kirsten and he asked if you accept your mistake. I said ‘Yesand he said you are banned, added the cricketer-turned-politician.

During the conversati?on with Irfan Pathan, he was asked whether he was involved in any altercations with his teammates. “I don’t think we ever had a heated argument, replied Gambhir. Never! The world h??as seen whatever heated arguments I have had,he concluded.

There is hardly any sight better in world cricket than watching Rohit Sharma and Virat Koh??li bat in tandem. Whenever the two modern masters bat together, it seems as if it is poetry in motion.

H??owever, one should spare a thought for the bowlers and the ?captain in the opposition when both Virat and Kohli make their lives difficult.

The dynamic duo has stit?ched innumerable hundred run partnerships as well as many double-century stands, to turn the tide in favour of India.

Recently, umpire Michael Gough revealed about the incident when a helpless Australian captain, Aaron Finch, sought advice from him, when both Virat? and Rohit were going great guns during one of the matches.

“I remember a match between India and Australia, and Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were putting on a huge partnership. I was standing next to Aaron Finch at square-leg and he said to me, during the game, how it was unbelievable to watch ??these two great players,Gough told Wisden Cricket Monthly.

“Then he asked me how I would bowl at them! I looked at him and said, ‘I’ve got enough on my plate, you’re on yo??ur own there??added Gough.

Although Gough did not me??ntion the details of the match, i??t is highly likely that he was talking about the recent ODI at Bengaluru, earlier in 2020, where he stood as an umpire.

With the series?? levelled at 1-1, the action shifted to the third and the final ODI at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

India had their task cut-out, ch?asing a challenging total of 286. Moreover, it turned out to be one-way traffic as Rohit and Virat cruised India towards victory with their ??match-winning partnership of 137 runs.

Captain Kohli scored 89 runs, whil??e Rohit notched up yet another? ODI ton during his 119 run-knock. As a result, India won the series by 2-1.

The semi-final ??encounter between Indi??a and Australia in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, held in Durban, South Africa, turned out to be a high-octane clash.

Initially, it was Yuvraj Singh and Robin Uthappa, along with a few finishing blows from Indian captain MS Dhoni, which helped India post a stiff target of almost 190 i?n front of the Aussies?.

The contest is also remembered for S Sreesanth’s fiery spell where he ended up conceding only 12 runs and picked a couple of vital wickets.

After being handed the new ball, Sree sent back the dangerous looking Adam Gilchrist upfront. The third-wicket partnership betwee??n Matthew Hayden and Andrew Symonds was threatening to take the game away from the Indians.

In his second spell, Sree came back to pick the wicket of Hayden who scored a quickfire 62. The Kerala speedster cleaned up both the Australian openers with absolute peaches, as ??the formidable duo lost their stumps.

Sree, in his trademark manner, gave an animated send-off to ?the openers, much to the joy for the spectators. Now, the two-time World-Cup winner revealed about how a pep-talk from Dhoni helped him being extra-motivated.

“Dhoni bhai motivated me. He said you keep showing your aggression here and there; now do it against Australia. I think it worked like a key mechanism for me because I got fired up at the right time. The first ball, Hayden hit me for a boundary because I tried a yorker. That was the plan because I had seen Shoaib Akhtar get him out to the same ball,” Sree said on Youtube channel ‘Cow Corner Chronicles with Chandresh’.

India ended up winning the match by a comfort??able margin of 15 runs, as the Blue Brigade entered into the final of the tournament which they eventually won against arch-rivals Pakistan.

In?dia scripted one of the greatest wins in history during the quarterfinals of the 2011 World Cup against Australia at A??hmedabad.

The ‘Men in Blue’ ended the 12-year long championship streak of the Aussies, thanks to the game-changing partnership between Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh.

The Kangaroos, then, were the undisputed champions of t??he world, with World Cups of 1999, 2003, and 2007, as well as the Champions Trophy of 2006 in their bag.

To beat Australia, was half the job done for sides in their bid for the coveted trophy. However, the win did not come easy for the hosts as Australian skipper? ?Ricky Ponting almost took the game away with a scintillating ton on a turning track.

It was also the last inning of his World Cup career and continued his domination against the Indian attack. Ponting single-handedly pushed the score of Australia to 275 on a challenging pit?ch.

Batting second, India looked comfortable as long as Sachin Tendulkar was there at the crease. Moreover, the hosts were reduced to 187-5, when a ‘sad’ MS Dhoni went back to the dressing room after not being able to get the job done, with 74 runs required off 75 deliveries.

Dhoni fier??cely cut a wide delivery from Brett Lee, which was destined to go to the point boundary, instead rocketed into the palms of Michael Clarke.

“Virender Sehwag was sitting on my right and Sachin Tendulkar on the left. Tendulkar tapped me and said ‘You will win the match for India today’. He touched me thrice and then he wears that Sai Baba’s bracelet and the blessing I got made me feel that it’s my day to win the game for India,” Raina told Aakash Chopra.

“As I was walking I saw MS Dhoni’s sad face while walking back to the pavilion. At that very moment, I decided I would not miss this chance and will win the match at any cost. Australia removed the off-spinners from the attack and they were the only threat for us. After a six off Brett Lee, I was sure that we will win, the momentum kept on shifting in our favour,” the southpaw recalled.

Raina, who came in for Yusuf Pathan in the heavyweight knockout clash, reaped rich dividends for the faith entrusted on him and stitched a match-winning partnership with Yuvraj. He scored a? priceless cameo of 34 which came off just 28 deliveries and took India to the semi?s.

The two of the best batsman of this generation, Virat Kohli and Steve Smith, will have a face-off when India host Australia in first of the three-match ODI series at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday?.

The debate of who is better between ?Kohli and Smith has been raging on for quite some time now. While some have been brave enough to choose one o?f the two, others have adopted a more cautious, sit-on-the-fence approach.

Former India opener Gautam ??Gambhir, though, made no bones about who he thinks is better of the two in white-ball cricket. Gauti feels Kohli is way ahead of Smith when it comes to white-ball cricket.

Speaking on a show for Star Sports India, Gambhir said there is ‘no comparison’ between Kohli and Smith in white-ball cricket.

“Virat Kohli is far far better than Steve Smith in white-ball cricket. There’s no comparison. I would not compare Virat Kohli to Steve Smith in white-ball cricket,” said Gambhir.

“I would actually want to see what spot Smith bats in. Are they going to push him at No.4 or would have him bat at 3 and send (Marnus) Labuschagne at No.4.”

Kohli is currently the top-ranked batsman in ODIs ahead of teammate Rohit Sharma. Smith, on the other hand, is now placed at No. 26 in the latest releas??ed ICC rankings.

The Indian skipper is head and shoulders ahead of his contemporaries in the 50-overs format, amassing 1??1,609 runs in 242 matches at a phenomenal average of 59.84. He has a whopping 43 tons? to his name, along with 55 half-centuries.

Smith, meanwhile, has played 118 ODIs in which he has scoring 3,810 runs with an average of 41.41. H??e has just eight centuries and 23 fifties to his name.
