The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) opened up the applications for the role of head coach in India’s women’s cricket team on Tuesday (May 1). Notably, the position has been lying vacant since the last year after the team’s previous head coach Ramesh Powar moved to the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

The information for the hiring was conveyed through a notice on the board’s official website, which also mentioned the eligibility criteria. According to the issued notice, the ideal candidate ‘should have represented India or any other country at the international level, or should have a minimum NCA level ‘C’ coaching certificate or a similar certificate from a reputed organisation and a minimum of 50 first-class games’.

However, the candidate having experience in coaching an international team f??or a period of a minimum of one se??ason or a T20 franchise for two seasons is also eligible to apply for the role.

The invitation of applications by BCCI for the role came after so many changes in the coaching staff and considering the upcoming two ICC events lined up next year. It is also noteworthy that the Indian team went to the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa without a head coach. The Women in Blue were only supervised by their batting coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar in the tournament.

Although the duration of the tenure is not mentioned in the notice, BCCI is likely to appoint the head coach till the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup that will be held in India. The board has fixed 10th May as the last date for the application, after which the shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by the Ashok Malhotra-led Cricket Advisory Committee.

“A thorough understanding of the game or playing/coaching experience at the highest level and experience of leading a multicultural team ” has also been recommended by the BCCI for the posit??ion.??
