Despite bowling with intensity and passion throughout the 5-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, Mohammed Siraj didn’t achieve the results he had hoped for. Apart from a strong performance in the Sydney Test, Siraj was largely ineffective in the series, conceding too many runs without troubling the Australian batters significantly. His underwhelming showing in the Test series cost him a spot in the squad for the Champions Trophy 2025, with other pacers like Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah being preferred over him.

After being excluded from the Indian team for the prestigious tournament, Siraj has now outlined his future plans, sharing a post on social media that has sparked significant discussion within the cricketing community.

Mohammed Siraj’s latest post after being snubbed from Champions Trophy squad

The 30-year-old has maintained his distance from the limelight and has not appeared publicly ever since the announcement of the Indian team for the England ODI series and Champions Trophy 2025 took place. Fans speculate that Siraj has been dropped from the team due to the pacer’s lack of efficiency during the Test series against Australia and the team management’s decision to go for more spinners in the bowling department. However, Siraj has indirectly revealed his thoughts on the omission and opened up on his plan ahead.

In the viral social media post, Siraj can be seen in the gym taking a selfie using the gym mirror with dumbbells and other workout equipment around him. The Indian pacer further added a caption “Reset, Restart, Refocus/em> pointing out that he has started preparing himself for a comeback in the Indian team.

Siraj’s ODI record so far

Siraj is expected to be a major miss for the Champions Trophy 2025. The right-arm pacer has an impressive record in white-ball and was a crucial component of India’s bowling unit during the ICC tournaments. Siraj has played 44 matches for the country and has taken 71 wickets so far with an economy rate of 5.18. The most memorable moment of Siraj’s limited overs career so far was the remarkable 6-wicket haul which he took against Sri Lanka in Colombo in September 2023.

Siraj was also part of the lethal trio during the ODI World Cup 2023 along with Shami and Bumrah and clinched 14 wickets during the tournament, thus becoming a constant bone of contention for the batters. Despite the sensational display with the bowl, India missed out on winning the world cup and was defeated by Australia in the finals of the tournament.

On April 30, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled the Indian team’s roster for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. This much-awaited tournament will kick off on June 2 and be jointly hosted by the USA and West Indies.

The most notable selection in India’s squad was of Yuzvendra Chahal. Chahal exhibited outstanding performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, claiming 13 wickets in 10 matches. His remarkable form during this period secured him a position in the team for the esteemed event.

Yuzvendra Chahal expresses his delight after being included in India’s squad

Before the match of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) against Rajasthan Royals (RR), Chahal, who recently etched his name in history as the first bowler to reach 200 wickets in the IPL, engaged in a discussion with Murali Vijay on Star Sports. During their discussion, Vijay asked Chahal which of his recent achievements he would prefer to be congratulated for first. To this, Chahal answered that being chosen for the World Cup squad was his primary source of pride. He emphasized that earning a spot in India’s lineup was his ‘biggest achievement’ thus far, highlighting that every cricketer aspires to earn national selection after proving themselves in domestic cricket.

“For the World Cup, we play IPL, domestic cricket to get into the Indian team and that is my biggest achievement,” Chahal said on Star Sports.

Notably, Chahal’s last appearance in a T20I match for India was during their tour of the West Indies and the USA in July 2023. While on the West Indies tour, he secured five wickets across five matches. Despite this notable performance, he found himself excluded from the squad. Additionally, he was omitted from the T20I series against Afghanistan earlier in the year. Reflecting on these events, Chahal noted that during his absence from international cricket, he made productive use of his time by taking part in domestic cricket fixtures.

“I think I played there (West Indies) last July, but when I was out of the Indian team. I played domestic T20s and cricket keeps going on,” the 33-year-old stated.

Tough night for Chahal against Sunrisers Hyderabad

Despite his strong performances in previous matches, Chahal faced difficulties against the SRH batters while playing for RR. Surprisingly, he ended up being the most expensive bowler of the game. Chahal conceded 62 runs in his four overs with an economy rate of 15.50 without claiming any wickets.

BCCI unveiled the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 on Tuesday, featuring a 15-men team led by Rohit Sharma, comprising of both young talents and seasoned players. Following the squad announcement, various sports personalities and experts started expressing their opinions on the team. Kumar Sangakkara praises the Indian Squad for T20 World Cup 2024

During the pre-match press conference ahead of Rajasthan Royal‘s (RR) clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Sangakkara praised the Indian team’s spin attack, describing it as “high-quality” for the upcoming global event. He expressed confidence in India’s well-rounded squad, emphasizing their batting depth and the presence of talented all-rounders.

“It’s an extremely strong squad. They’ve got their batting covered, they’ve got their all-rounders in. They’ve got very high-quality spin and very good combinations that they can play,” Sangakkara said during the pre-match press conference.

Sangakkara elaborates why the Indian team is ‘well balanced’

The RR head coach mentioned that Rahul Dravid and Rohit likely had a clear idea of the squad they needed for the tournament, considering the conditions there. He suggested that they might have considered two or three different combinations, depending on whether they preferred a deeper batting line-up or more strength in their bowling. He concluded that it was a well-balanced and strong squad, noting India’s consistent strength in international tournaments.

“Knowing the conditions there, I’m sure Rahul (Dravid) and Rohit (Sharma) have a good idea of what the squad should be to play the cricket they want in the World Cup. And they’ll be having two or three different combinations, depending on whether they want a deeper batting line-up or more strength in their bowling. But it’s a really well-balanced squad, a very strong squad and India’s always been very strong in international tournaments,” Sangakkara added.
