The cricket fraternity was also in complete awe of Harmanpreet Kaur‘s batting heroics in the recently-concluded second T20I against England Women at St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury.

The Indian skipper recorded her second-highest ODI score – an unbeaten 143 from just 111 deliveries, with the help of 22 boundaries, including four sixes. The progression of Harmanpreet’s innings was quite stunning as she shifted gears quite amazingly.

After bringing up her half-century from 67 balls and the triple-figure score off 100 deliveries, the explosive batter clubbed six fours and three maximums in the last 11 balls of her innings to power India to 333/5 – their highest ODI score against England.

Eventually, the Women in Blue hammered the English side by 88 runs in the match to clinch a historic series, with the third and final ODI set to be played on September 24. Notably, India had already won the three-match series opener by seven wickets.

After the memorable victory, Harman said she was happy to win the series in England and mentioned she enjoyed the unbeaten knock that helped her side to take a 2-0 lead.

“When we came here, that was the goal (to win the series). Was a crucial win today as everybody stepped up. I always enjoy leadership as I’m always in the game, and it feels good. When I was batting during the first 50 runs, it wasn’t all that easy. I just took my time, and the partnership with Harleen was important. Just gave freedom to myself later as I was well set,” said Harmanpreet in the post-match presentation.

India defeated EnglandΒ in the opening ODI by seven wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the ongoing three-match series at County Ground in Hove on Sunday. Star batter Smriti Mandhana continued her excellent form and played another match-winning knock.

Mandhana, who was India’s leading run scorer during the recent three-game T20I series, carried on that effort, smashing a brilliant 91 off 99 deliveries to help India chase down 228 with seven wickets in hand.

Apart from Mandhana, Yasika Bhatia (50) and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (74 not out) slammed contrasting half-centuries to help the Women in Blue finish the proceedings with more than five overs remaining.

Earlier, Indian bowlers displayed utmost discipline to restrict the hosts at 227/7 in their allotted 50 overs. Deepti Sharma picked up two wickets for 33 in 10 overs, including a maiden, while veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami bagged one scalp but conceded only 20 runs in her quota of 10 overs with the help of two maidens.

For the English side, all-rounder Davidson Richards top-scored with 50 from 61 balls, while Daniel Wyatt also contributed well with 43 off 50 deliveries.

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), on Friday, announced their Women’s squad for the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) series against India, starting Sunday, September 18, in Hove.

Amy Jones, who led the English side in the 2-1 T20I triumph, will continue to captain the team in the 50-over fixtures. Notably, ahead of the T20I leg, regular skipper Heather Knight had been ruled out of due to surgery, while stand-in captain Nat Sciver had pulled out, citing the need to focus on her mental health.

Newcomers Alice Capsey and Freya Kemp, who played the T20I leg, have received their maiden call-ups for the ODI series, which is part of the new ICC Women’s Championship cycle that will add up to the qualification of the Women’s World Cup in 2025.

“I was so proud of how the team came together to win the Vitality IT20 series. Sometimes when you’re missing big name players, other players step up and take their chance, and I felt we really did that. It’s a young group, but they worked tremendously hard and showed their skill and resilience to get over the line,” said head coach Lisa Keightley as quoted by SkySports.

“Amy did a great job as captain, and she was ably supported by Sophie [Ecclestone], so we want them to carry on what they’ve been doing. It’s another big series, especially with points counting towards ICC Women’s World Cup qualification, and with the summer ending at Lord’s, there’s a lot to be excited about,” she added.

England Women Squad for ODIs against India:

Amy Jones, Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Freya Davies, Alice Davidson-Richards, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Freya Kemp, Issy Wong, Danni Wyatt.

India Women faced England Women in the first T20I of the ongoing three-match series at Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, where the hosts registered a comfortable 9-wicket victory.

Notably, the Women in Blue defeated England at the Commonwealth Games semi-final just a month ago, but the T20 series did not start well for them on Saturday night. Being put to bat first, India struggled their way to put up a big score and could only manage 132/7, which was gunned down by the English side in just 13 overs.

After the disappointing performance, India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur said her side “forcefully played” in damp conditions and were not playable. The India captain reckoned the outfield was sluggish and a bit slippery due to the wetness, which wasn’t ideal for fielding. However, the Indian skipper backed her troops and mentioned that despite the wet conditions, the team continued to give their best.

“We were not able to get the runs we were expecting. I just feel we forcefully played because conditions were not 100 per cent fit to play. Still, I am happy with the way girls put the effort because when there are chances to get injured but they are ready to play,” said Harmanpreet after the match.

Due to the wet conditions, India also ended up losing a key member when Radha Yadav‘s diving effort in the second over of England’s chase resulted in a shoulder injury, and she left the field in pain.

“I know it was not 100% conditions to play cricket, and still we were putting efforts. I know the ground was too wet, and there were so many chances to get injured, and one of our players got injured also. She was our main bowler and that’s why we were lacking. That’s what you need to have team-mates in the team (for) who can score in whatever conditions, and I am happy the way we put our efforts,” added Harmanpreet.

England women cricket star Natalie Sciver has withdrawn from the upcoming T20I and ODI series against India to focus on her mental health and well-being, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Thursday. Sciver, who was standing in as captain for Heather Knight as she recovers from hip surgery, has left the team’s camp in Durham to return home.

Wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones was appointed captain for the three-match T20I series against India, starting in Durham on Saturday, with no replacement player has been named as yet.

“I’ve played a lot of cricket over the last nine months, and I am very emotionally fatigued. Elite sport demands a lot, and for the moment, I’m not able to perform without compromising my own well-being, so I need to take some time away from cricket in order to focus on myself. It’s the right decision for me, and it’s the right decision for the team,” said Sciver in a statement released by ECB.

Sciver captained England in Knight’s absence in the Commonwealth Games, where the host nation lost the bronze-medal playoff against New Zealand, with Australia claiming gold and India silver.

“We fully support Nat and her decision to step away from this series. Cricket is important, but it is wholly insignificant in the context of an individual’s health and happiness. The welfare of our players and staff is always our number one priority, and we will support Nat throughout this period,” said Jonathan Finch, Director of England Women’s cricket

The India Women’s tour of England will start on Saturday, September 10. Both sides will first meet in the three-match T20I series and then battle out in the three ODIs, part of the ICC Championship Match.
