After a month long tussle between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and International Cricket Council (ICC), the three parties have finally build a consensus around the venue for India-Pakistan games in major ICC tournaments, including in the Champions Trophy 2025 which is scheduled to be held in Pakistan

Way clear for India-Pakistan games in Champions Trophy

The three involved parties have finally built a consensus that the upcoming India-Pakistan matches in the current 2024-27 cycle will be held in a neutral country. The ICC in a statement today said that the arrangement will be applicable to the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 (Pakistan), ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 (India) and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 (India and Sri Lanka). This will automatically mean that the India-Pakistan clash during the T20 World Cup in 2026 will be held in Sri Lanka. Additionally, Pakistan have been awarded hosting rights of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2028, where neutral venue arrangements will remain the same.

Venue still unclear for IND vs Pak in Champions Trophy: UAE favourites?

While a consensus has been reached to host the matches between India and Pakistan in a neutral country, the host for these matches in the champions trophy is still unknown. BCCI has reportedly favoured UAE to host these matches, PCB, on the other hand, is advocating Sri Lanka to host these matches. However, due to logistical convenience, the hosting rights for these matches can ultimately go in favour of UAE. If the decision goes in favour of the UAE, the Dubai International Cricket Stadium is the most likely candidate to host the match considering the size of the stadium and the sheer number of people who attend the match in-person. 8 nations have quali??fied for the upcoming Champions Trophy.

The Champions Trophy 2025 is set to adopt a hybrid hosting model, a development that carries significant implications for the much-anticipated cricket rivalry between India and Pakistan. Under this arrangement, India will play all their matches, including potential knockouts, in Dubai, while the rest of the tournament will be hosted in Pakistan. This compromise, influenced by political tensions and security concerns, follows extensive negotiations between the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), and other stakeholders.

What is the hybrid model?

The hybrid model was devised as a solution to India’s refusal to play in Pakistan, citing security and governmental restrictions. Similar to the arrangement used in the 2023 Asia Cup, India’s fixtures will be moved to a neutral venue, Dubai, while Pakistan retains hosting rights for the remainder of the tournament. This decision reflects ongoing challenges in organizing matches involving these two cricketing giants, whose bilateral cricket ties have been suspended since 2012.

PCB’s stance and demands

Although the PCB has agreed to the hybrid model for the Champions Trophy, it has done so with conditions. The board has demanded that this approach be formalized for all ICC events hosted by India until 2031. This would ensure that Pakistan’s matches in tournaments like the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2031 ODI World Cup, both hosted by India, are also held at ne??utral venues.

Additionally, the PCB is advocating for a fairer share of ICC revenue. Currently, Pakistan receives less than 6% of ICC revenue, a stark contrast to India’s 38%. By hosting matches under the hybrid model, the PCB aims to strengthen its case for increased financial compensation and equitable treatment in the cricketing ecosystem.

Impact on India-Pakistan rivalry

The hybrid model reshapes the dynamics of the India-Pakistan cricket rivalry, lim?iting direct engagements to ICC events and Asia Cups. While the neutral venue approach in Dubai ensures the matches proceed, it also diminishes the home advantage for Pakistan.

For fans, the hybrid arrangement presents mixed feelings. Indian fans gain the opportunity to watch their team in a neutral yet accessible location, while Pakistani supporters miss the chance to see their team play India on home soil during such a prestigious tourna??ment.

Fan engagement and logistical challenges

Relocating India’s matches to Dubai will demand intricate logistical planning. Accommodating the fan base, ensuring adequate facilities, and managing tight schedules will be critical. Dubai’s experience in hosting high-profile matches may ease these challenges, but the shift also raises questions about the long-term viability of hybrid hosting as a model for international cricket.

Following India’s official refusal to play the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan, several notable figures in the host nation have voiced their reactions. Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez is among those criticizing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Hafeez called it a dream to see India play in Pakistan, expressing frustration over w?hat he sees as an unfounded decision, given that other countries have successfull?y toured Pakistan recently.

BCCI cites security concerns, PCB seeks government advice

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently received an email from the International Cricket Council (ICC), confirming that BCCI would not send the Indian team to Pakistan, citing security concerns. PCB, in response, has forwarded the issue to Pakistan’s government, seeking guidance on how to proceed. Hafeez, meanwhile, strongly asserted that Pakistan is “safe and ready” to host the tournament and called for a firm response from both PCB and the government.

Mohammad Hafeez takes a dig at BCCI over India’s denial to travel to Pakistan

Hafeez did not hold back in his criticism of the B??CCI’s decision, stating that while it was always a daydream to think India would play in Pakistan, the reasoning behind their refusal lacks logic. Hafeez pointed out that multiple international teams, including Australia, England?, and West Indies, have played in Pakistan recently, yet India continues to raise security concerns.

According to Hafeez, this selec?tive stance from India is difficult to justify, as Pakistan has proven their capability to host top-tier international events without incident. Hafeez’s comments reflect a growing sentiment in Pakistan cricket circles, calling for a strong stan??ce from the PCB and government in response to India’s refusal.

“It was a day dream that India will come to Pakistan to play #ChampionsTrophy2025. Pakistan is safe & ready to host the event. Pakistan hosting all cricket nations at home but somehow not *secure* for India. Waiting for strong & surprised response from government & PCB,” Hafeez wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Potential hybrid model and tournament uncertainty

The ICC had planned to announce the Champions ?Trophy schedule on November 11, but the unresolved dispute between PCB and BCCI has cast uncertainty over the tournament’s future. While Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi were initially chosen as venues, the ICC may now consider a hybrid model, with UAE as a potential alter?native host for matches involving India.

Asia Cup 2023: A similar scenario

This situation mirrors last year’s Asia Cup, where BCCI refused to send India to ??Pakistan, resulting in a hybrid model. Pakistan hosted some games, but India’s matches were held in Sri Lanka. If the Champions Trophy adopts a similar format, matches featuring India could be played in the UAE.

India and Pakistan recently locked horns in a much-anticipated encounter at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. In a thrilling low-scoring game, India emerged victorious by 6 wickets, securing a crucial win a?gainst t?heir arch-rivals.

The viral drop and Aliya Riaz’s reaction

The match featured a memorable and amusing incident that quickly spread across social media. During Pakistan’s innings, Indian fielder Asha Sobhana dropped a simple catch, sparking a humorous reaction from Pakistan’s Aliya Riaz, who was seated in the dressing room.

The moment unfolded after the Powerplay in the first innings when Pakistan opener Muneeba Ali, on 14, attempted to play a scoop-flick ov??er fi?ne leg for a boundary. She mistimed the shot, resulting in a straightforward catch opportunity for Sobhana. However, much to everyone’s surprise, Sobhana missed the catch.

The camera immediately cut to Aliya in the dressing room, who burst into laughter?? and placed her hands on her face, unable to believe that Sobhana had dropped such an easy chance. The clip of this incident soon went viral, bringing a lighter moment to the tension-filled match.

Fortunately for Sobhana and Team India, the missed chance did not prove costly, as Shreyanka Patil later dismissed Muneeba for 17 off 26 balls. India’s bowling unit showcased an impressive display, restricting Pakistan to a modest total of 105/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Arundhati Reddy was the standout performer with the ball, picking up 3 wickets for just 19 runs in her 4 overs. Shreyanka Patil also shone,?? taking 2 wickets while conceding o?nly 12 runs.

During the chase, India faced a few challenges but managed to pull through, thanks to key contributions from Shefali Verma (32), Harmanpreet Kaur (29 retired hurt), and Jemimah Rodrigues (23). The Indian team ultimately overpowered Pakistan, successfully chasing down the target and sealing a well-deserved victory??.

In a low-scoring encounter at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Sunday (October 3), India registered their first win by defeating Pakistan by 6 wickets in Dubai. Pakistan posted a modest total of 105/8, with Nida Dar top-scoring for her side. India, led by Shafali Verma’s steady 32 and Harmanpreet Kaur’s quickfire 29, chased down the target with seven balls to spare. Despite a valiant all-round effort from Pakistan captain Fatima Sana, India prove??d too strong, clinching victory with eas??e.

Muneeba Ali and Nida Dar lead Pakistan’s innings

Pakistan’s batting performance in the match against India faced challenges from the start. Muneeba Ali, Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batter, tried to stabilize the innings with a composed knock of 17 off 26 balls, hitting two boundaries. However, Gull Feroza was dismissed for a duck, setting Pakistan back early. Sidra Amin scored 8 off 11 balls, but the team’s struggle continued as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Nida Dar top-scored with a gritty 28 off 34 balls, though she could not accelerate the innings as needed. Lower-order contributions from Fatima, who hit 13 off 8 balls, and Syeda Aroob Shah (14 off 17 balls) helped Pak?istan reach a modest total of 105/8 in their 20 overs.

Arundhati Reddy and Shreyanka Patil star in India’s bowling attack

India’s bowling, led by Arundhati Reddy and Shreyanka Patil, restricted Pakistan to a manageable total. Reddy was the standout bowler, claiming 3 wickets for 19 runs in her four overs, including the crucial scalps of Nida and Aliya Riaz. Shreyanka Patil delivered an economical spell, taking 2 wickets for just 12 runs, including the dismissal of Muneeba. Renuka Singh and Deepti Sharma supported well with a wicket each, while India’s bowlers maintained pressure by taking wickets at key moments. Pakistan struggled to build partnerships, and India’s disciplined bowling performance left them defending a modest target of 106.

Shafali Verma, Harmanpreet Kaur steady knock anchors India’s chase

India’s chase of 106 was anchored by Shafali, who played a steady knock of 32 off 35 balls. Though Smriti Mandhana was dismissed early for just 7 runs by Sadia Iqbal, Shafali held her ground, hitting three boundaries during her stay. Jemimah Rodrigues contributed with a patient 23? off 28 balls, adding a crucia?l partnership with Shafali. Harmanpreet, who had to retire hurt after scoring a quick 29 off 24 balls, played a vital role in steering India close to the target. In the end, India comfortably reached 108/4 in 18.5 overs, winning by 6 wickets with 7 balls to spare.

Fatima Sana’s all-round effort goes in vain for Pakistan

Pakistan’s captain Fatima gave an impressive all-round performance, taking 2 wickets for 23 runs after her earlier contribution with the bat. She dismissed key Indian batters Jemimah and Richa Ghosh, but her efforts were not enough to turn the tide in Pakistan’s favour. Sadia also bowled well, taking 1 wicket for 23 runs, but the target of 106 was not enough to challenge India. Despite their bowlers?valiant efforts, Pakistan fell short.
