India have triumphed over England in the second semifinal of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Following the defeat, England’s skipper, Jos Buttler, provided insight??s into what went wrong and what could have been done better.

Jos Buttler reflects on England’s semifinal loss to India and future plans

During the post-match presentation, Buttler acknowledged India’s superior performance and said India fully earned their victory with an above-average score, making it difficult for their side to chase despite our aim to limit them to 145-150 runs on that pitch.

I believe India outperformed us and fully earned their victory. They definitely had an above-average score. I had hoped to limit them to around 145-150 runs on that pitch, but it was always going to be a difficult chase from there,” Buttler said.

Reflecting on England’s strategy, Buttler expressed some regret over their bowling decisions. “I thought we bowled without much luck during the power play, with a few close calls. In hindsight, I would have brought Moeen Ali into the game. So, yes, there are bits and pieces we could have done differently,”

Looking ahead, Buttler discussed the emotional impact of the loss and his immediate plans. “I’m just looking forward to taking a break from the game. Right now, feeling emotional after the loss, I don’t think I need to reflect too deeply on the tournament and the future. I’m simply looking forward to some distance from the game,”

In the semi-final 2 showdown of the T20 World Cup 2024 between India and England at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant‘s intelligent reflexes behind the stumps proved to be the game-changer. His swift stumping of Moeen Ali off Axar Patel‘s bowling dealt a significant blow to England’s chase, emerging as one of the crucial reason behind India’s dominant victory.

India posts a strong target

England won the toss and chose to field, putting India in to bat. Rising to the challenge, India posted a formidable total of 171/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Skipper Rohit Sharma led the charge with a brisk 57, while Suryakumar Yadav added a crucial 47. England’s chase and Rishabh Pant’s key stumping

As England started their chase, Indian bowlers, especially Axar, kept up relentless pressure. Axar had already taken the important wickets of captain Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow when Moeen came to?? the crease, looking to stabilize the innings.

The pivotal moment came in the 8th over of the England’s chase. Axar delivered a ball that clipped Moeen’s thigh pad, tricking him into thinking it had traveled further. As Moeen lost his balance and stepped out of his crease, Pant seized the moment. With lightning-quick reflexes, Pant collected the ball and dislodged the bails in an instant. Moeen, realizing his mistake too late, tried to get back but Pant’s swift action had already sent him back to the pavilion for 8 off 10 balls.

Fans are eagerly anticipating the high-stakes second T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final between India and England in Guyana to begin. However, ????persistent rain and unique match regulations have cast a shadow of uncertainty over the contest scheduled for Thursday, June 27.

Tight schedule forces unique scenario

Unlike the first semi-final, this match lacks a? reserve day due to the tight schedule before t??he final in Barbados. The ICC has implemented specific rules to ensure a timely conclusion.

“To avoid back-to-back matches for teams,” an ICC spokesperson said, “overs will start being reduced at 2:40 pm local time (approximately 250 minutes after the scheduled 10:30 am start).”

This creates a situation where a full 20-over match could begin at 2:40 pm (12:10 am IST), potentially facing interruptions later that could lead to a no-resu??lt.

Minimum overs requirement

For a completed match, both teams must bat for at least 10 overs. The ICC spokesperson has confirmed that the latest start time for a 10-over match would be aroun??d 4:14 pm (1:44 am IST).

If weather disrupts this requirement, India, who finished top of their Super Eight group, will advance to the finals against South Africa.

While these p?laying conditions were pre-approved, the lack of a reserve day for such a crucial encounter has spa??rked debate among fans and experts.

India, led by Rohit Sharma, are poised to reach their first T20 World Cup final since 2014 as they prepare to face England in the semi-finals at ?Providence Stadium in Guyan??a.

India vs England

This match revisits the intense rivalry from the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final, where England dominated with a comprehens?ive ten-wicket victory on their way to clinching the title.  India will this crucial clash on the back of an unbeaten run throughout the tournament, showcasing consistent performances in both the group stages and the Super Eight. In contrast, England have naviga??ted a more challenging path, scraping through to the semi-finals.

Jos Buttler and Phil Salt: England’s destructive opening pair

Jos Buttler has been the linchpin of England’s campaign, leading from the front with his exceptional batting performances. His recent blitz of 83 not out off just 38 balls against the United States of America (USA) exemplified his destructive capability, propelling England to a swift victory and securing their place in the semi-finals as the ?first ?team to qualify.

Buttler’s form poses a significant challenge for India, who must devise effective strategies to contain him and disrupt England’s batting momentum early in the innings. His partnership with Phil Salt at the top of the order adds to England’s formidable batting lineup, making early breakthroughs crucial for India’s chances.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s strategic insight

India’s veteran off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, sharing insights on his YouTube channel ahead of the crucial 2024 edition semi-finals, has proposed a strategic adjustment for Team India. Ashwin suggested utilizing left-arm spinner Axar Patel with the new ball against England on Thursday.

“Axar Patel in powerplay, especially considering Jos Butler’s match-up against him. He gets him out very often. When you consider that, is that an exceptional case where you can use Axar? It has been Axar’s World Cup. Might not be in terms of wickets or runs. But wherever he turns, in that crucial change-maker, Axar has come three times,” Ashwin said.

Emphasizing Axar’s craftiness and impressive form throughout the tournament, Ashwin highlighted his potential to unsettle English openers. According to Ashwin, Axar’s variations and strategic acumen could pose significant challenges for the English batters, disrupting their early momentum and providing crucial breakthroughs for the Men in Blue.

“A spinner like Axar Patel bowling to Jos Buttler and Salt, he has got two toys. He can bowl a fantastic arm ball. He can slow the ball down. He can also slide it in with the arm. Which makes it three toys in his favour. In the first over, the batter is still getting into the groove. So, when the intent is slightly less, these toys can hit him on the pad. The arm ball that he swings in the back foot, Salt is a tough back foot player. Jos Buttler’s trajectory is low. When you look at it, it is a good thing for Axar Patel to bowl the first over,” Ashwin concluded.

The stage is set for a thrilling encounter in the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals as England, aiming to become the first men’s team to retain the title, lock horns with a hungry Indian team desperate to end their trophy drought.

England stands just two victories away from etching their names in history. They enter the knockout stages on a strong note, but face a resurgent Indian side seeking their first T20 World Cup win since the tournament’s inception in 2007.

Paul Collingwood’s insights

Former England cricketer Paul Collingwood believes India poses a serious threat, particularly with the in-form Jasprit Bumrah leading their bowling attack.

“India, with their well-rounded squad, stands out particularly for Jasprit Bumrah’s current form. He’s fit, accurate, fast, and highly skilled. No team seems to have an answer for him. In a 120-ball game, having someone like Bumrah with his pace for 24 balls makes a huge difference. India has looked confident even in tough situations and on difficult pitches in America. Their batters, like Rohit Sharma who played a magnificent innings against Australia, seem to be back in form. Honestly, I can’t see India losing this time. England will need something extraordinary to beat them,” the T20 World Cup-winning captain was quoted as saying to Star Sports.

Bumrah has been a force to be reckoned with throughout the tournament, picking up 11 wickets in just six matches with a miserly economy rate of 4.08. His performances have been pivotal in India’s journey to the Super Eights, and he’ll be a crucial asset for Rohit Sharma’s men in the high-pressure knockout stages.

“He’s the best cricketer in the world at this moment”: Collingwood

Collingwood doesn’t shy away from even calling Bumrah the best cricketer in the world at present.

“I think if you had a piece of paper and had to pick a cricket team, in any form of the game, Jasprit Bumrah would be the first name going on that list right at the top. It’s as simple as that. He’s the best cricketer in the world at this moment. The skill level, the pace, the deception that he has in T20 cricket is incredible,” he added.

With England needing a monumental effort to overcome a? confident Indian team spearheaded by the in-form Bumrah, the upcoming semi-final promises to be a nail-biting encounter that will keep fans on the edge of their seats.
