he Indian Women’s team displayed immense c??haracter to reach the finals of Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia. The Blue Brigade remained invincible throughout the to?urnament, only to be beaten in the finals at the hands of host Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

One of th??e spirited performers for India in the tournament, Poonam Yadav, picked up 10 wickets in 5 matches of the tournament. She remained the highest wicket-taker in the multilateral competition only behind Australian seamer Megan Schutt who scalped 13.

In a recent interaction on Twitter via hashtag AskPY, the leg-spinner revealed about her favourite cricketers. Poonam named for??mer Indian captain MS Dhoni as her favorite cricketer, along with former Indian women’s team internati?onal Neetu Davids.

Throughout the T20 World Cup, Yadav’s four-over spell turned out to be the deciding factor in the match. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur used her ace spi?nner brilliantly to provide essential breakthroughs in the middle overs.

Poonam, more often than not, delivered for the team whenever a wicket was demanded of her.
Her 4/10 spell ripped through the mighty Australian batting lineup in the tournament opener. Yadav impressed one and all with?? her deception, flight, and execution of googly, which bam?boozled several batters.

However, on the big stage, the five-time World Champions bull-dozed over India by smashing bowlers to all parts of the ground. Indian batting order capitulated ?under pressure. As a result, handing hosts a massive victory.

India ac??e leg-spinner Poonam Yadav still finds it difficult to move on from the loss in the finals of the T20 World ??Cup in Australia.

India, who remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, reached the finals of the competition on the back of Poonam’s magical spells, and Shafali Varma’s explosive starts.

Yadav finished ?second in the tally of wickets (10 wickets in 5 ??games) in the tournament, only behind Megan Schutt.

However, midway through India’s long tour Down Under, former Indian captain Diana Edulji questioned the team’s mentality in big matches.

India also lost to the Australians in the Women’s T20 Tri-series, which featured England as the third side. The criticism gained momentum as India lost another game at the big stage.

“We lost just one match â€?the final â€?but that hurt us. It’s a game after all, and the team which played better, won,” Yadav told Sportstar.

This is now the second time the Indian women’s team came heartbreakingly close to an ICC World title. The Blue Brigade also had a dream run in the ODI World Cup in England back in 2018.

In that tournament as well, India was not able to cross the finishing line in the finals, losing out to hosts England. Therefore, Yadav rued abo?ut not being able to be felicitated with the gold medal for once.

“I am tired of finishing runners-up twice, pata nahi gold kab milega! But 2021 World Cup should be ours, and we will go all out to chase our dreams,” added the most successful bowler for India in T20Is.

Coming back from an injury, Poonam ripped?? through the powerful Australian batting lineup in the opening match of the T20 World Cup, with her spell of 4/1??9.

“All I thought was to play to my potential and not let my team down. It was, after all, the first game of the T20 World Cup, so I made sure that I backed my team-mates well. That definitely helped me in scalping those four wickets,” Yadav reflected on her performance against the Aussies.

India star opener Smriti Mandhana on Wednesday apologized to all the cricket fans in the country after her side faced an embarrassing defeat to Australia in the recently-concluded Women’s T20 World Cup final.

After winning each game in the group stage, India entered the final post a washout against England in the semi-finals. The Women in Blue, however, faltered in the summit clash in front of a record-breaking attendance for a women’s cricket match of 86,174 as Australia thrashed India by 85 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on March 08.

“I would like to thank all those who filled the MCG on March 08 and the billions who supported us throughout. Really sorry that the results didn’t go in our favour but I’m overwhelmed by the support that we’ve been receiving, and that kind of support is what keeps us going,” Mandhana wrote in her Instagram post.

Smriti, who didn’t have a great outing in the tournament and managed just 49 runs in her four innings, further vowed that the Indian team would work harder and come back strongly in the times to come.

“I also wanted to take a moment to appreciate the efforts and the hardwork the entire team and support staff have put in throughout this World Cup. The Australian Women’s Team not only won their fifth Women’s T20 title but also walked away with a million dollars (INR 7.4 Crores) as prize money for clinching the 2020 edition of the tournament.

India Women as runners up in the tournament received precisely half the amount awarded to the Aussie Women. The prize money was inflated five times in comparison to the last edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2018 – also won by Australia.

With the vision of the growth of Women’s cricket, the ICC in a meeting held last year in September decided to raise the prize money reward by a whopping 320%.

The Australian women also walked away with all the accolades after defeating th??e Indian team at the grand finale held ?at MCG on Sunday.

The likes of Beth Mooney (Player of the Series) and Alyssa Healy (Player of the Match), set the tempo up-front for the host playing in front of a record 86,000+ c?rowd.

India, who remained unbeaten throughout ??the ??tournament, bottled under pressure with the batting order capitulating within the powerplay.

Australia, on the other hand, had to play ??out of their skins with the virtual quarter-finals ??fixture against New Zealand, and a hard-fought semi-final win against South Africa.

Meanwhile, India’s clash against England in the semis was washed out without a single delivery being bowled.

The eight-day long layoff from the field, after playing their last match before the finals, ultimately made the In??dian side rusty as they dropped few expensive catches??.

Australia openers Alyssa Healy (77), and Beth Mooney (78 not out) scored quickfire half-centuries in the summit clash and almost knocked India out of the game in the first innings itself.

After India’s loss in the T20 WC Final, the BCCI Secretary, former and present cricketers came in?? support of the Women in Blue on Twitter lifting their morale.

Teenage sensation Shafali Verma was left to tears after India lost to Australia in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final on Sunday.

The Aussies thrashed? Harmanpreet Kaur & Co. by 85 runs to clinch their fifth T20 World Cup title.

Shafali, who ended the tournament as India’s top run-scorer, was seen sobbing on the field after the match ended.

Former Australia fas?t bowler, Brett Lee, felt sorry for the 16-year-old India opener??.

“I really felt for Shafali Verma at the end, it was tough seeing her in tears, but she should be very proud of the way she’s performed in Australia,” he wrote in his column for the ICC.

Shafali scored 29, 39, 46, 47 and 2 in her first Women’s T20 World Cup. When Indian star batters like Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur failed, Shafali stood tall.

“She’ll learn from this experience and come back stronger. Moments like this can define you in a positive way…Don’t be surprised to see her put a big score on the Aussies the next time they play,” Lee added.

The Aussie legend opines that Shafali will only get better from here on. “To come out here and face your first tournament head-on is testament to her talent and mental strength, and she’s only going to get better from here.”

Lauding Australia’s performance, Lee said the way Alyssa Healy (75) and Beth Mooney (78 not out) started the innings on Sunday; he was reminded of the 2003 Men’s ODI World Cup final which Ricky Ponting’s brigade won against Sourav Ganguly’s men in Johannesburg.

“Sometimes you can bat a team out of the game in that first half, which Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting and Damien Martyn did for us in Johannesburg,” Lee said.

“Scoreboard pressure means so much more in a Final and, as we saw at the MCG, India just couldn’t get the momentum needed for the chase,” he added.
