One of the greatest success stories in the U19 World Cup in South Africa earlie??r this ye??ar was the exceptional captaincy of Priyam Garg.

India dominated throughout the tournament until the f?inal where the blue colts faced defeat at the hands of Bangladesh.

After India got a promising start, thanks to a resolute 88 from ‘Man of the Tournament’ Yashasvi Jaiswal, India ended up with a sub-par score of 177. Moreover, with the ball, India did well to restrict the Bangladesh side to 102-6.

The young Indian brigade displayed exceptional fight to take the match deep into the final few overs but could not manage to go across the finishing line. Now, Garg has opened up on how he learnt to remain calm by watching MS Dhoni play.

“I follow Dhoni sir. He is my idol and inspiration. I follow his footsteps when it comes to batting or captaincy. I have learnt how to remain calm and adapt to any situation and condition from Dhoni sir,” Garg was quoted as saying by TOI.

“I have watched his batting videos very closely and learnt from those. I always watch his videos of matches in which he turned the game on its head with his captaincy, batting or field-setting skills.” he added.

Further, Garg described the knocks where Dhoni too??k his team out of precariously placed situations to come out victorious in th??e match.

“Many times, we saw India losing five wickets for under 100 runs and then Dhoni took the team post 250. His knocks against Pakistan will always remain my favourite. He can calmly take the match deep and then shift gears,” the UP cricketer said,

“The way he judges the loose deliveries and then sends those out of the park is mind-blowing. Apart from this, his ability to run between the wickets is far superior than any player in the world. At his age, he is still so fit,” Garg concluded.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, arguably the best batting prospect from the recent U19 World Cup, is now looking forward to sharing the dre??ssing room with modern greats ‘Steve Smith and Ben Stokes?at Rajasthan Royals in the forthcoming edition of IPL.

Jaiswal took his tally to 400 runs in the tournament, powered by the century against Pakistan in the semis and a gritty 88 against Bangladesh in the ??finals.

However, the Mumbai batter could not take his team across the finishing line as India lost the finals to Bangladesh.
At the 2020 players’ auction, Rajasthan Royals were quick to bag the services of the gifted southpaw, with a lucrative deal of INR 2.4 crores.

“For me, it is a very good opportunity to play in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals because I can go and talk with the World’s best players like Steve Smith, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler. I am excited to learn from them. It will be exciting for me as it is my first IPL, and I will try my best to do whatever I can,” Jaiswal told India Today.

The inspirational story of Jaiswal, from selling pani-puris at the streets of Mumbai, and then making it to the hi?ghest level at U19 cricket, has already done several rounds all over the media.

Jaisw?al now has an opportunity to share the ??dressing room with prominent names in world cricket at the moment.

“When I was in 10th and was selling pani-puris, I did not think about anything because that time that was required for me. And I was really enjoying that. I knew that it was fine to do that. I will not get anything easy. Every time I need to work hard for it, then I will get it. So it helps me in getting a strong mindset,” added Jaiswal.

Bangladesh’s historic victory over India in the finals of the ICC U19 World Cup 2020 in South Africa was marred by a scuffle that took place between the players of two teams.

After hitting the winning runs, the entire Bangladeshi squad ran towards the center of the pitch, while one of the Bangladeshi cricketers was seen taunting the Indi??an players.

What transpired next was a brawl-like situation in the middle of the ground between the youngsters. After investigation, three players from Bangladesh – Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain, and Rakibul Hasan, and two players from India ?Akash Singh and Ravi Bishnoi were suspended for 4-10 games.

Bangladeshi pacer Shoriful Islam, in a rec??ent interaction, recalled their heartbreaking loss in the Asia Cup and revealed that the Tigers wanted to give it back to the Indians.

“Actually, we lost two close matches against them in the past. One was the Asia Cup semi-final [in 2018] and the other was a [Asia Cup] final [in 2019]. I can’t describe what those defeats felt like,” Shoriful told Daily Star.

Islam went on to justify the behavior of the players by bringing in an angle of vengeance post-heartbreaking loss to I?ndia at the seni?or level.

“Before taking the field for the final, all I could think about was what they did after winning and how we felt after losing. They celebrated wildly in front of us back then and we couldn’t say anything. We were waiting for the day we would meet them in a final again,” continued Islam.

Furthermore, Islam commented that the team was looking for an opportune moment for wild celebrations in front of the?? defending?? champions.

“Yes. We got the chance. What I wanted was to give it our all. Then they would know what it is like when someone celebrates in front of you like that after you’ve lost,” concluded the pacer.

In recent developments, former Indian cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi??, heavily criticized the demeanor of the Indian colts, during the finals of t??he ICC U19 World Cup held in Potchefstroom on Sunday.

After the winning runs were? scored by the Bangladeshis, their entire squad raced onto the middle of the pitch to celebrate the historic ?victory. Subsequently, it led to altercations between the players of both sides.

Post-investigation, three Bangladeshis, and t?wo Indian players were reprimanded for their actions. The whole scene left a sour taste for the? fans of the game who criticized the behavior from both teams.

“Look, what Bangladesh do is their problem. What our boys do is our problem. You could see that there was abusive language used,” Bedi told Mid-Day.

Further, the world cup-winning off-spinner asked for stringent action by the ICC and called for team management, the coach being ac??countable for their actions.

Bedi did not even spare India’s former U19 coach, Rahul Dravid, and asked for answers for such a ‘disrespectful and disgraceful’ demeanor.

Here’s the full video of the scuffle

“You bat, bowl and field bad, happens, but there’s no excuse for behaving badly. The behavior was disgusting and most disgraceful. The innocence of that age was not visible at all. Who can control this? If the top is behaving like that, what do you expect? The coach, the team manager should be hauled up. Dravid must answer to this development,” added Bedi.

During recent times, the South Asian teams were accused of manipulati??on of age in the Under 19 tournament. Bedi, later, talks about the pertinent issue which has plagued the tournament even in?? the recent edition.

“India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. All Asian teams which made the semi-finals…you could tell from a country mile that the players were not under-19. A few years ago, Rahul Dravid spoke about the overage issue. What has happened to us? I am very disappointed,” concluded the 73-year-old.

Cricket, a gentleman’s game, can also turn ugly at times and a similar incident took place after Bangladesh’s historic win over India in the 2020 U19 World Cup finals in Potchefstroom on Sunday.

Moments after the Bangladesh Tigers clinched their maiden U-19 World Cup title an altercation among a few players from both the B?angladesh?? and India camp was witnessed at the Senwes Park.

As soon as the match ended, it became tense with Bangladeshi players rushing to the ground and most of them? still displaying aggressive body language.

In fact, one India player rushed to confront and pushed a Bangladeshi player who had allegedly used a cuss word at him and then India’s coach Paras Mhambrey went ahead to calm his boys.

As of now, it’s not yet sure which team initiated the ugly episode, but it has definitely tarnished the reputation of the game.

After a bumpy start, Pakistan consolidated their inning in the first semi-final of the ICC ?U19 World Cup 2020 at Potchefstroom, South Africa on Tuesd?ay. Opener Haider Ali and captain Rohail Nazir steadied the ship with their impressive partnership.

However, Indian teenage prodigy Yashasvi?? Jaiswal managed to break the dangerous partnership with the priced wicket of Haider. Soon after, Qasim Akram and Rohail were involved in a bizarre run-?out.

The onus, then, resided on Rohail and Mohammed Haris to forge yet another partnership to post a challenging total. Batting at 21, with a maximum and boundary already to his name, Haris succumbed to a rush of blood ??and decided to sweep Atharva Ankolekar.

Divyansh Saxena, p??laced at deep square leg, covered a fair amount of ground to pluck a spectacular catch towards his right. Replays showed that Saxena was at his full stretch to reach the ball and latched on to the catch, only millimeters off the ground.

Commentators unanimously appreciated Saxena’s efforts and tagged it as the ‘catch of the tournament’.

Watch the video below:

In the end, it was a clinical performance for the I??ndian colts who outplayed their arch-rivals in all three departments of the g??ame. Pakistan could only post a paltry 172 runs in front of the heavy-duty Indian lineup.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Saxena chased down the total with ease and booked their place in the finals for the seventh occasion. Saxena also scored a gritty half-century in support of Jaiswal’s magnificent ton.

When it comes to U19 World Cups, Indian cricket has the tendency to produce cricketers,? earmarked to be the next big thing in the sport, every edition. Be it Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Prithvi Shaw, or Rishabh Pant, each star impressed the pundits during their opportunity to feature in the multilateral tournament.

This time around, Mumbai southpaw Yashasvi Jaiswal hogged all the limelight, this edition of the tournament. Following his glamorous knock aga??inst Australia, the left-handed opener left spectators awestruck with his range of shots against Pakistan during his unbeaten knock of 105.

The four-time champions cruised into their seventh final on the back of Jaiswal’s glittering knock, by comprehensively defeating their arch-rivals in the semis.

Jaiswal credited his success to a short video of Rahul Dravid shared by coach Paras Mhambrey. The motivational speech consisted of Dravid dispensing his knowledge on how to ke?ep focus during crunch games.

“Paras Mhambrey sir ensured that everyone took this as any other game. We watched a short video from Rahul (Dravid) sir who motivated us and his words helped us a lot. He said, ‘remember that cricket is played in those 22 yards. Just take it like any other game and keep our focus,” stated Jaiswal, as quoted as saying by Indian Express.

India’s clinical victory should also be attributed to the bowlers who restricted the men in green to 172. Further, opener Divyaansh Saxena’s gritty knock of 59, ensured an Indian victory without losing any wicket.

“This was the first time I experienced what an India versus Pakistan game means. The atmosphere was amazing, people chanting and screaming ‘India, India’. It was a totally different experience. Twice during the tournament, I got out after being set, so I told myself that today I will play over by over. (Divyaansh) Saxena was batting well at other end and it helped ease the pressure off me,” continued the 18-year old.

The likes of Wasim Jaffer also contributed to Jaiswal’s success in the inning by claiming that the key is to rotate the strike and remain unperturbed under pressure.

“I played each ball on merit. I had spoken to coaches here along with captain Priyam Garg and Wasim (Jaffer) bhai. They all said when I feel under pressure, just play out the next few overs. Maiden jaye toh bhi chalega (even if it is a maiden it is fine). Drink water, take singles. If you watched me batting, you will see that between 50 to 60 I took only singles. And the moment I felt ab confidence aagaya hai (I am confident now), I played my shots,” concluded Jaiswal.
