The Indian Premier League (IPL) and the T20 World Cup are two of the most admired cricket competitions in the world. Winning either tournament is a significant achievement for a?ny cricketer, and both trophies are highly coveted.

The IPL, known for its glamorous and competitive nature, brings together the best talent from around the world. The T20 World Cup, on the other hand, is a global competition where national pride is on the line. Both tournaments have a profound impact on a player’s career and are dream milestones for any modern-era cricketer.

Handful of players to bag both trophies

Despite the dreams and aspirations of many cricketers, only a select few have managed to win both the IPL and the T20 World Cup. Achieving this rare double is a testament to a player’s skill, consistency, and ability to perform under pressure. While many great players have won both trophies, most of them required multiple attempts.

For instance, Rohit Sharma won the T20 World Cup in his first attempt but needed one season to secure an IPL title (2009). Similarly, MS Dhoni lifted the T20 World Cup in his debut attempt but ?took three IPL seasons to taste victory (2011).

Only a few achieved the feat in their debut seasons

Among the handful of players who have won both trophies, an even more exclusive club consists of those who achieved this feat in their debut seasons. This remarkable accomplishment has only been achieved by three players, showcasing their extraordinary talent and impact on the game. These players include two ?Indian stars and one from the West Indies, who hav??e etched their names in cricketing history.

Sanju Samson (India)

Sanju Samson‘s achievement is nothing short of extraordinary. He won the IPL in his first season with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2012. However, Samson didn’t get single match. Similarly, Samson was part of the Indian team that recently won the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados. Remarkably, this was also Samson’s first T20 World Cup tournament, and like the IPL, he did not play any matches. His unique journey highlights his luck and the strength of the teams he was part of.

Sunil Narine (West Indies)

Sunil Narine, the former West Indies all-rounder, is another player who achieved this incredible feat. Narine made his T20I debut in 2012 and won the T20 World Cup with the West Indies team later that year. His debut IPL season in 2012 was equally impressive, where he played a pivotal role for KKR by taking 24 wickets and helping them secure the championship. Narine’s contributions with both bat and ball have made him a standout performer in T20 cricket.

Yusuf Pathan (India)

Yusuf Pathan, the former Indian all-rounder, made his T20I debut in the inaugural T20 World Cup final against Pakistan in 2007 and won the championship with the Indian team. The following year, Pathan was part of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the inaugural IPL season.

Under Shane Warne’s inspirational captaincy, RR won the title, with Pathan playing a crucial role. He scored 435 runs from 16 games at a brilliant strike rate of 179.01, including four half-centuries. Pathan’s explosive batting and key performances were instrumental in his team’s success.

The T20 World Cup 2024 is drawing closer, and cricket fanatics in India are eagerly waiting to see their team in action. With Rohit Sharma, known for his aggressive batting, leading the ch?arge, Team India has a strong chance at winning the trophy. With a plethora of talented players to choose from, all eyes are on the final squa??d selection.

Mohammad Kaif names his India squad

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has unveiled his picks for the mega event, creating a buzz with some unexpected selections. Kaif went with some expected choices and also named Rishabh Pant and Yuzvendra Chahal in his final 15.

Focus on power hitting and all-rounders

Kaif’s batting order prioritizes aggressive strokeplay, with the young prodigy Yashasvi Jaiswal partnering with the experienced Rohit at the crease. Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Pant form a formidable middle-order, promising a flurry of runs. Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja solidify the lower-middle order with their all-round abilities, while Kuldeep Yadav brings his deceptive spin into the mix. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh spearhead the pace attack.

No place for Rinku Singh

The most striking aspect of Kaif’s squad is the omission of Rinku Singh, who has been in exceptional form for KKR in the IPL, known for his finishing skills. Instead, Kaif opted for Riyan Parag, impre??ssed by h?is recent performances in the ongoing season. Mohammed Siraj, despite his recent dip in form, earned a spot due to his vast experience.

“Yashasvi Jaiswal will open alongside Rohit Sharma. Then Virat Kohli at No. 3, Suryakumar Yadav at No. 4, Hardik Pandya at No. 5 and Rishabh Pant at No. 6. I will keep a lot of all-rounders because you need batting depth. So I will say Akshar Patel at No. 7 and Ravindra Jadeja at No. 8. After that, Kuldeep Yadav, who is a skillful bowler, at No. 9. Then two fast bowlers – Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh. That makes it your XI. Then I will go with Shivam Dube. He is in great form and plays spin splendidly. He drives the game very well after six overs,” said Kaif on Star Sports.

“I will take Riyan Parag’s name. He is playing exceptionally well and deserves to be in the squad. That makes it 14, plus I will take Mohammed Siraj’s name. Although he is not in form, he is an experienced bowler and has a fantastic overall record,” he added.

Mohammad Kaif’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad for India

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant (wk), Akshar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshd??eep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shivam Dube, Riyan Parag, Mohammed Siraj

As the cricketing world gears up for the much-anticipated T20 World Cup 2024, the focus shifts to the squad selections, igniting debates and speculations among fans and experts alike. Amidst this buzz, former New Zealand cricketer turned commentator, Simon Doull, has thrown his hat into the ring with a bold prediction about India’s squad selection, particularly concerning two star batters who could find themselves sidelined.

India’s selection conundrum: Plenty of options, tough decisions

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 in full swing, performances in the league have inevitably influenced discussions around squad selections for the upcoming ICC event. The resurgence of Rishabh Pant, the consistent brilliance of Shubman Gill, and the emergence of talents like Rinku Singh have only added to the selection conundrum.

Simon Doull’s bold assertion: Rohit and Kohli are must-haves

However, Doull’s recent insights have shed light on the direction India might take when finalizing their squad. While Rohit Sharma‘s captaincy is already confirmed, questions loom over the inclusion of Virat Kohli, especially after his noteworthy performances in the IPL. Interestingly, Doull picke??d the duo as must-haves in his recent interview to Cricb??uzz.

Star batters on the chopping block: Doull picks two batters who might miss out

Doull’s assertion that both Rohit and Kohli are indispensable in the Indian squad sets a definitive tone. He goes further to suggest that certain star batters might have to make way to accommodate the duo.

In a surprising twist, the cricketer-turned-commentator predicted that Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant could find themselves sidelined. Despite their impressive form in the IPL, Doull suggests that tough decisions may lie ahead, with Gill an??d Pant potentially facing the axe to accommodate the exp?erienced stalwarts.

Strategic insights: Versatility and composition

Doull also emphasized the importance of versatility in squad composition, particularly in the top-order. He hinted that players like KL Rahul, with the ability to keep wickets, might have an edge over others. Doull’s analysis suggests a strategic approach, envisioning a top-order comprising the likes of Jaiswal, Rohit, Virat, and Rahul.

“Not yet. No, no, no…He’s (Shubman Gill) got a, you know, I mean, that spot up the top when you take in a World Cup 15. It should be 18 in my opinion. But when you’re taking that side and you’re picking it, you really only carry one extra top-order batter. You’ve probably only room for one top-order replacement batter if it happens to be someone like KL Rahul, who can keep wickets for you. And that is a real bonus. That top-order replacement batter, he keeps, Shubman doesn’t keep. And if he can’t make the side ahead of Jaiswal, Rohit and Virat at the moment, he probably doesn’t go,” Doull said.

“Rishabh Pant has to do a lot more to get into my side. He has to be Rishabh Pant, the batter, because there are a number of people who can keep him as well. He has got to show me he is capable of batting at five in the middle order before anything. He is still a little bit one-dimensional in his hitting,” he added.
