As the cricketing world gears up for the much-anticipated ODI World Cup 2023, the Indian cricket team is riding high on confidence. The Men in Blue recently secured a ser??ies victory against the mighty Australians and will now be entering the ICC event as the no. 1 ODI team of the worl???d.

Amidst the buzz and anticipation surrounding the marquee event, former India opener Virender Sehwag took a trip down memory lane to reflect on the strategies that brought India success in the 2011 World Cup. He even shared a valuable piece of advice legendary MS Dhoni gave to the sq??uad members back then with the current Indian team.

Virender Sehwag reflects on the strategy team India opted for during the 2011 World Cup campaign

In a recent interaction with Cricbuzz, one of the fundamental principles that Sehwag highlighted from the 2011 World Cup campaign was the team’s decision to shield themselves from external distractions, particularly the news media. He explained that this approach was aimed at reducing the pressure that often accompanies high-profile tournaments like the World Cup. Sehwag further emphasized that this decision, endorsed by then-coach Gary Kirsten and captain Dhoni, played a pivotal role in?? keeping the ??team unified and focused.

“We decided we won’t read newspapers, don’t listen to outside noise. Anything which can add to pressure, we won’t do. It had become a rule, and almost everyone genuinely followed that. We stayed together, we tried to enjoy and do team-building exercises. Because it’s easy to drift apart in long tournaments such as these. Gary Kirsten and MS Dhoni ensured that we stay together,” Sehwag explained.

Sehwag shares MS Dhoni’s powerful one-line advice from 2011 with Rohit Sharma and Co.

However, the most significant nugget of wisdom from Dhoni was encapsulated in a simple yet profound one-liner, which Sehwag shared with Rohit Sharma and Co. ahead of the important ODI World Cup 2023.

“But MS Dhoni has this one line, ‘focus on the process’. Our process was good, that’s why we won,?/em> Sehwag reminisced.

The image of Virat Kohli lifting Sachin Tendulkar on his should??ers during the victory lap at the Wankhede Stadium after the 2011 ICC World Cup is indeed a memorable moment for every Indian. It symbolizes the respect and admiration that Kohli had for Tendulkar, as well as the passing of the torch from one generation to the next.

During the ICC World Cup 2023 schedule announcement ceremony, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag shared an interesting anecdo?te about that moment. He revealed that other players had the opportunity to lift Tendulkar but chose to pass it on to the younger players, including Kohli.

Because we rejected, Sachin was so heavy, we couldn’t lift him. We were old. We have shoulder injuries and MS had knee problems, somebody else had other problems. We gave the burden to the youngsters. You go and pick up Sachin Tendulkar and give him a round. That’s why it was Virat Kohli,” Sehwag said at the ICC 2023 World Cup fixture release event on Tuesday (June 27).

The 2011 World Cup was Tendulkar’s last ICC event, and he equaled Javed Miandad’s record for the most World Cup appearances with his sixth tournament participation. Throug??hout the tournament, Tendulkar played crucial innings, including a match-winning 85 against Pakistan in the semi-final at Mohali.

Although Tendulkar didn’t have a significant contribution in the final against Sri Lanka, Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni played pivotal knocks to help India chase down 275 runs and secure the??ir second World Cup trophy on April 2nd, 2011.

After the match, Kohli, along with Yusuf Pathan, lifted Tendulkar on their shoulders during the team’s lap of honour. Tendulkar held the Indian tricolour and expressed his gratitude to the fans in the stands, creating an unforgettable moment of celebration and unity.

Since winning the 2011 World Cup, India have won only one ICC event – the 2013 Champions Trophy – and their wait for lifting a trophy in another global event has now lasted more than a decade.

Notably, the Indian team will begin their World Cup 2023 campaign on October 8 against Australi?a in Chennai.

Former India captain MS Dhoni has inaugurated the victory memorial at the Wankhede Stadium, where his iconic six had landed during the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka. The inauguration took place on the eve of the IPL 2023 match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Dhoni had led the Indian team to a memorable victory on home soil, ending a ??28-year-long wait for the second ODI World Cup trophy.

In order to pay tribute to the Indian team’s sensational victory on their home ground, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) decided to construct a memorial at the exact location where Dhoni’s iconic match-winning six had landed. As a part of this initiative, the MCA will remove five chairs (seat number J282 – J286) from the pavilion stand to make way for the memorial.

Here is the video:

Speaking about the 2011 World Cup summit clash, Sri Lanka batted first and set a competitive target of 274/6 in 50 overs. Veteran batter Mahela Jayawardene smashed an unbeaten century (103), while skipper Kumar Sangakkara chipped in with a valuable 48.

The hosts then began their chase but on a poor note, losing both legends Virender Sehwag (0) and Sachin Tendulkar (18) early. Before the tourists could capitalise further, Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli steadied the ship with a crucial partn?ership of 83 runs t??o bring back India into the game.

Gambhir went on to score 97 runs off 122 balls and formed a game-changing 109-run partnership with skipper Dhoni, who remained unbeaten on 91 off 79 balls. Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh (21 not out) put together 54 runs for the fifth wicket, leading India to their first World Cup title in 28 years. India’s inability to win International Cricket Council (ICC) events has been a major talking point over the past few years. The last time Men in Blue won an ICC Trophy was ten years back when they lifted the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy under the captainship of world’s most decorated skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Discussing about the team’s impotence in winning ICC events on his official YouTube channel, India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin backed Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The 36-year-old termed the criticism over not winning a world cup or any other major ICC event unjustified, and he even questioned the critics giving an example of legendary Sachin Tendulkar. The Tamil Nadu cricketer also talked about Dhoni’s triumph and hailed him as a stalwart.

“Even Sachin Tendulkar won the World Cup in his sixth attempt. That was the situation for a stalwart of Indian cricket. Just because another stalwart in MS Dhoni came in and won a World Cup as soon as he took charge, doesn’t mean that it will happen for everyone, right?” said Ashwin.

Notably, India currently in their cabinet?? have three world cups along with an ICC Champions Trophy, and three of those four titles came under the leadership of Dhoni.

Ashwin also? pointed out that both Virat and Rohit have won a few major ICC events and ?should be given some more time.

Virat Kohli won ICC tournament in 2011 (World Cup), and 2013 when we won the Champions Trophy. Rohit Sharma has also won the Champions Trophy. So, we can give them some space. They are playing in bilateral series, IPL and so many other matches. But when it comes to ICC tournaments, you need those crux moments to go your way,” he added.

The Men in Blue last won a world cup tournamen?t in 2011 on home soil, and there is a chance to once again repeat the triumph as India will be hosting an ODI World Cup event in October-November ?this year.

After the long wait of 28 yea??rs, India lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup ten years ago on April 2, 2011. Each year, fans and experts celebrate India’s historic win at the 2011 World Cup. However, this year, the celebrations were quite different as the country observed the 10th anniversary of the memorable triumph.

Taking to Twitter, Virender Sehwag shared a team celebration photo with the trophy at the Wankhede Stadium, and captioned it as: “April 2: 10 years ago, the moment of a lifetime. #TeamIndia”.

In the video, Yuvraj revealed that Team India wanted to win the World Cup for Sachin Tendulkar.

“The whole team wanted to win the World Cup so badly, especially for Sachin because it was his last World Cup. We also wanted to win in India, something which wasn’t done before,” he said.

Sri Lanka’s former minister for sport, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, has claimed that the 2011 World Cup final between Sri Lanka and India was fixed.

Speaking to News 1st, Aluthgamage said: “The 2011 World Cup final was fixed. I stand by what I say. It took place when I was the minister of sports. I state with responsibility; however, I do not wish to expose details for the sake of the country. That game against India in 2011, a game which we could have won, was fixed.”

“I state with responsibility, and I can come forward for debate. The people are concerned about it. I would not involve the cricketers in this. However, certain groups were definitely involved in fixing the game.”

In the final, Sri Lanka, after winning the toss and electing to bat first, posted 274 for the loss of six wickets. Mahela Jayawardena scored 103 off 88 with 13 fours and guided his team to the respectable score. But Gautam Gambhir’s 97 and MS Dhoni’s unbeaten 91 took the Men in Blue over the finishing line.

Meanwhile, Jayawardene refuted Aluthgamage’s claims on Twitter, soon after the politician’s comments were made public. He even asked for the names and evidence, involved in the matter. Jayawardena took to Twitter and wrote, “Is the elections around the corner? Looks like the circus has started names and evidence. #SLpolitics #ICC.”

Finally, Kumar Sangakkara, who was the Sri Lankan skipper in the final, has opened up on the issue. Sangakkar?a, who is also the president of the Marylebone Cricket Cl?ub (MCC), said that the former minister needs to take the evidence to the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The veteran replied to Jayawardene and wrote, “He [Mahindananda Aluthgamage], needs to take his “evidence” to the ICC and the Anti-corruption and Security Unit so the claims can be investigated thoroughly.”
