Former British cricketer-turned-umpire Ian Gould retired last year from international cricket. The final international match in which he stood was India versus Sri Lanka ODI in the 2019 World Cup. Recently, Gould participated in an interview where he was asked to name three batsmen he enjoyed watching the most. The former English umpire responded to the question and picked Jacques Kallis, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.

Gould stated that he loved watching Kallis and could sit and watch the former South African all-rounder bat all day. The 62-year-old picked former India great Sachin Tendulkar and current skipper, Virat Kohli, as the two other batsmen he loved watching.

Gould also rated former Australia??n captain Ricky Ponting as an o??utstanding character.

“Jacques Kallis. I loved watching Jacques. He was a very, very fine player. Sachin. And probably Virat. I was unlucky in some respects. I didn’t see the best of Ricky Ponting. He was an outstanding character, outstanding captain, such a proud Australian,” said Gould during his interview with ESPNCricinfo.

“But his career was just starting to wane as I came on the scene. But he was incredibly helpful, so I’m disappointed I have to leave him out. Jacques Kallis, I could sit and watch all day, Virat, the same. And Sachin, if you want someone to bat for your life, he was the man,” he added.

Gould showered praiseworthy comments on the current India captain stating Kohli is a lovely guy, and he knows everything about the game. Gould felt that Virat’s popularity is just like Tendulkar carrying the hopes of billions.

“He’s a funny man. Yeah, he batted like me a couple of times. I had to tell him off for slogging it. He’s a charmer. He’s one of those guys who’s got, a bit like Sachin Tendulkar, the whole of India on his back, but you wouldn’t know. You could walk into a restaurant and sit and chat with him for hours. He’s a very worldly boy. When you look at Virat, you’re thinking male model, pin-up boy, but he knows about the game inside out, the past, history. Lovely guy,” Gould added further.

Gould stood as an umpire in 74 Test m?atches, 140 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 37 T20 Internationals (T20Is).

Reminiscing about Sachin Tendulkar’s record-breaking ODI double hundred in Gwalior, Dale Steyn quipped that Ian Gould did not give the ‘Master Blaster’ out because the umpire feared the home crowd.

Tendulkar got to the landmark in 2010 in the final ODI of a bilateral series. India scored a humongous 401/3 following Sachin’s heroics and skipper MS Dhoni’s cameo towards the end of the innings.

“Tendulkar scored a lot of runs against us. He got the first double hundred in ODI cricket, and it was against us in Gwalior,” Steyn said in a Sky Sports Cricket Podcast that also featured James Anderson and former England cricketers Rob Key and Nasser Hussain.

“And I remember â€?I think I got him out lbw when he was about 190-odd. Ian Gould was the umpire, and he gave him not out. And I was like, ‘Why, why did you give him not out? That’s so dead.’ And he was like: ‘Mate, look around â€?if I gave him out, I won’t make it back to the hotel’,” Steyn added with a laugh.

?The Proteas legend further spoke about th??e demi God-like status Tendulkar enjoys in his country.

“When he came in, you had to up your focus and hit the top of off stump. Especially in India, if you could maybe bring the ball back in, he could get out LBW but he was so good, he rarely got out that way. If you bowl a bad ball to him and he hits you for four from nought especially in India, it feels like the world is closing in on you. He might just 4, not out but he might as well be batting on 500. You don’t want to bowl a bad ball and just hope; because he’s got it covered, has every shot in the book,” Steyn said.

Earlier, England seamer James Anderson spoke about the need to r??em?ain focussed when bowling to Tendulkar.

“I don’t really remember having a specific game plan against Tendulkar. I just remember that once he came in I went in my mind: ‘I CANNOT bowl a bad ball here.’ He is that good a player and so key for India,” Anderson said.

“Particularly in India, when you got him out, the whole atmosphere in the ground changed. He was such a big wicket, you just focus so much on bowling your best ball. Top of off stump, and hope he misses a straight one. In England, he might nick the odd one, but I generally tried to get him LBW early. I got success against him but he scored against us quite a lot too.”

betvisa liveIan Gould – Cricket Times - betvisa live //betvisa68.com/2020/04/ian-gould-recalls-his-infamous-sachin-tendulkars-lbw-decision-against-pakistan/ Sun, 26 Apr 2020 06:43:54 +0000 //betvisa68.com/?p=40808

They say that a cat has nine lives, but Indian batting ma??estro Sachin Tendulkar had five during the semi-final clash against Pakistan in the 2011 ODI World Cup.

Pakistan fielders kept dropping catches before their captain Shahid Afridi finally held one while? Sachin already scoring 85.

Spinner?? Saeed Ajmal caught Tendulkar in front of the stumps, as the latter missed a straighter one. Sachin looked plumbed by all means, as standing umpire, Ian Gould decided to raise his finger.

However, after Sachin decided ??to rev?iew Gould’s decision, the verdict was overturned as the ball appeared to miss the leg stump.

The review befuddled many as the ball pitched in line and did not deviate enough after landing, to miss the leg stump.
Recently, Go?uld reflected on the decision made nine years back and stated that he would still give Tendulkar out, irrespective of the replays.

“When I gave him out at Mohali, I think this is out. I will sit here and guarantee you, if I see it again, I’d still give it out, simple as that. He talked to Gambhir and looked like he was going to walk out, and I’m thinking thank God for that, then he spun on his heels and made that T sign and the world stop??ped,Gould told BBC 5 Live Sport.

For several years, BCCI was not open to including DRS in bilateral ties due to inefficacies of the technology. The Indian board claimed that the techn??ology is not 100% accurate to be adopted in all international games.

“Eventually, (third umpire) Billy Bowden told me ‘It’s missing leg, I need you to change your decision.Well, no disrespect to him, but I was watching on a 90-foot screen showing me it was missing leg b?y an inch so I didn’t really n?eed his analysis,he added.

Sachin’s 85 runs helped India win the high-octane clash at Mohal??i as the Men in Blue progressed into the finals of the coveted tournament.

Tendulkar was the lone warrior during India’s bid to post a challenging total. A late flurry from Suresh Raina also helped India cross 2?70.

“All I saw was?? a quicker ball from Ajmal and it thudded into the pads and went to square leg. It was just right, he’s out. Sorry, you’re out. I don’t care who you are, Sachin or anybody, you’re out. I was 110% confi??dent when the referral was made that the batsman was out, concluded Gould.

betvisa liveIan Gould – Cricket Times - betvisa cricket //betvisa68.com/2020/04/umpire-ian-gould-reveals-the-cricket-rule-which-should-be-removed-if-drs-is-available-worldwide/ Wed, 22 Apr 2020 10:30:09 +0000 //betvisa68.com/?p=40628

Former British cricketer-turned-umpire Ian Gould retired last year from international cricket. The final international match in which he stood was India versus Sri Lanka ODI in the 2019 World Cup. A few days ago, Gould in his autobiography, ‘Gunner: My Life in Cricket’ revealed that New Zealand’s umpire Chris Gaffaney was the first person who suspected the infamous ball-tampering scandal of the Australia cricket team in 2018.

Now, the English umpire has dropped his opinion on one cricket rule which should be removed from DRS technology. For those who aren’t yet aware, DRS is a technology-based system used in cricket to assist the match officials with their decision-making. On-field umpires may choose to consult with the third umpire, and players may request the third umpire to review the on-field umpires’ decision.

While talking to Tuffers and Vaughan Cricket Show at BBC Radio 5 Live, Gould said the umpire’s call, which relates to an lbw decision, should not be used if DRS is available worldwide. As per the DRS, which was introduced into Test cricket in 2009 and now used in all formats, if a player reviews an lbw decision and less than half the ball is hitting the stumps, then in that case, the on-field umpire’s call stands.

“You have to have DRS worldwide, and if you do that, I’d take the umpire’s call out,” said Gould.

Gould stated that it is not fair to have 37 cameras on every other decision but only 1?0 ?on the other.

“My argument is you can’t go to one place and have 37 cameras on every decision you make, then you go somewhere else, and there’s only 10. It’s unfair. It doesn’t equal the game up” added the 62-year-old.

The reason why Gould focused on worldwide availability is that in many bilateral series the DRS technology is not used mainly because not many boards can afford it. When Ireland took on the challenge of Pakistan, the DRS wasn’t used in the Test as Cricket Ireland could not afford the technology.

Gould also revealed?? that most umpires were not a fan of this technology when it first came around.

“If a batsman came forward and was hit on the pad, then it was not out. Then all of a sudden, you were seeing these things in front of you. That was the hard bit. When I first joined, a lot of senior umpires felt as though they were being shown up,” Gould added further.

Gould stood as an umpire in 74 Test matches, 140 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 37 T2??0 Internationals (T20Is).

Former British cric?keter-turned-umpire Ian Gould, who retired from cricket after the India versus Sri Lanka game in the 2019 World Cup, has revealed the name of the person who first suspected the infamous ball-tampering scandal of Australia cricket team in 2018.

In his new autobiography, ‘Gunner: My Life In Cricket’, Gould has stated that New Zealand’s umpire Chris Gaffaney was the first person who suspected the wrongdoing. Gould expressed that his counterpart Gaffaney left a message on his phone which said “things were starting to get a little bit out of hand” during Australia’s four-Test series against South Africa.

In the tour, Gaffaney had umpired the first two Tests??, and Gould was supposed to officiate in the remaining matches in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

“The umpiring team had their suspicions that Australia were working a little too aggressively on the condition of the ball, and they had an informal word with the host broadcaster SuperSport asking that if their camera crew saw anything that looked unusual they should let the umpires know,” Gould wrote as quoted by 1News.

Gould was the third umpire in the New Lands Test, and since Gaffaney cautioned him, he paid more attention in the game. During the game, when the Englishma?n received the footage, he passed on the vision to on-field umpires, in whi??ch the Aussie player Cameron Bancroft was seen putting sandpaper down his trousers.

After understanding the whole episode, Gould, who has been the member of International Cricket Council (ICC) ‘s Elite Panel of cricket umpires, opined that the decision of the international apex body not to bring Richard Illingworth, Nigel Llong and himself was a mistake.

“In hindsight, ICC’s decision not to bring Illy [Richard Illingworth], Nige [Nigel Llong] and myself in until the third test was a mistake,” added the 62-year-old.

Gould further criticised ICC?? stating that two of the three umpires (Kumar Dharmasena, Gaffaney, Sundaram Ravi) who stood in the first two Tests were ??comparatively inexperienced. Gould was talking about the pair of Kiwi and Indian umpire.

“Two of the three lads who did the first two tests were relatively inexperienced. (Kumar) Dharmasena had stood in over 50 Tests, but Chris was in only his 19th game and the other umpire, Sundaram Ravi from India, had fewer than 25 tests under his belt and within a year or so had been kicked off the elite panel because he wasn’t deemed good enough,” Gould added further.

After the incident, Cricket Australia (CA) acted strictly and banned the li??kes of David Warner, Steve Smith and Ba?ncroft. While Bancroft received a nine-month ban, Smith and Warner were slapped with a 12-months ban from playing in all international and domestic cricket matches.

Gould stood??? as an umpire in 74 Test matches, 140 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 37 T20 Internationals (T20Is).

The Sandpaper Gate during the Cape Town Test of Australia’s 2018 tour to South Africa, shocked the cricketing fraternity worldwide.

The third umpire of the match, Ian Gould, was the first few ones to access the visuals of Cameron Ba??ncroft using sandpaper to tamper the ball.

Gould came out conceding that the Australian cricket team played the ‘hard way’ in an uncontrollable manner two to three years before the Sandpaper Gate.

“I didn’t realise what the repercussions would be. If you look back on it now, Australia were out of control probably two years, maybe three years, before that, but not in this sense. Maybe – behavioural, chatty, being pretty average people,” Gould told Daily Telegraph recently.

Many cricket pundits slammed the Aussie culture, which ultimately led to the culmination of the scandal at Cape Town.
“But when it came into my earpiece I didn’t think the prime minister of Australia was going to come tumbling down on these three guys. All I thought was – Jesus, how do I put this out to the guys on the field without making it an overreaction,” added Gould.

After inspecting the status of the ball, Gould stated that the sandpaper had no major effect on the ball. “If you saw the balls, you would get it completely wrong. At the end of the day, the sandpaper didn’t get on that ball. They were working to get the ball to be pristine. Once they’d got one side bigger and shinier, that’s when the sandpaper was coming in,” the 62-year-old revealed.

In the aftermath of the infamous scandal, the disgraced Aussie trio of Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft served 8-12 months ban sa??nctioned by Cricket? Australia (CA).

The incident even led to the Australian Prime Minister giving scathing comments on the players, wh??ich blew the matter out of proportion.

KL Rahul won hearts during the third day’s play of the fourth Test match between Australia and India at the SCG as he did not claim a catch that he did not grab safely.

On-field umpire Ian Gould was also impressed with Rahul’s honesty as he clapped for the fielder and was also heard praising Rahul, calling his act ‘outstanding’.

Marcus Harris could have easily had ??his feet up in the dressing room before lunch. Howev??er, a sensational piece of sportsmanship by Rahul kept the Aussie opener on the field.

An attempted lofted on-drive off Ravindra Jadeja when on 24, saw Harris spoon one in Rahul’s direction.

Rahul looked to have taken the catch, and Jadeja and his Indian teammates began to celebrate. But, Rahul quickly got to his knees and waved away the chance, suggesting to all that he hadn’t taken the catch.

??Replays too confirmed that the ball had taken the grass before Rahul got his fingers underneath it.

We have se??en quite a few instances of batsmen being given out in a controversial manner.

And now, Indian star batsman Yuvraj Singh, who is currently a part of team Punjab in Ranji Trophy has shared a video on his Instagram in which a batsman was given out caught-behind even though the ball didn’t edged the bat.

In fact, the ball was very far away from the bat. Clearly, it was one of the most terrible caught-behind decisions we ?ever witnessed ??in the game of cricket.
