A major blow has struck the Afghanistan cricket team as their star spinner, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, has been ruled out of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 due to injury. This comes ??just as Afghanistan reached the crucial Super 8 stage of the tournament.

Impact of Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s departure

Mujeeb has been a vital cog in the Afghan bowling attack for several years. Renowned for his exceptional control and ability to turn the ball prodigiously, he boasts?? an impressive economy rate ?of 6.35 in T20 Internationals, along with 59 wickets in just 46 appearances.

While?? his participation in the tournament has been limited due to the injury, his absence will be deeply felt. In his only outing during the group stage, Mujeeb displayed his talent with a commendable spell of 1/16 in three overs against Uganda. His absence creates a significant hole in the Afghan bowling attack, particularly with the team needing to tighten their grip in the Super 8s against tougher opponents.

Replacement announced

Opening batter Hazratullah Zazai has been selected to replace Mujeeb in the Afghanistan squad. The ICC’s event technical committee approved this change on Friday, following Afghanistan’s win over Papua New Guinea. While Zazai is a batter and not a direct substitute for the bowler Mujeeb, he will enhance the team’s batting lineup. Zazai has not participated in a T20I since February but was present in the last two T20 World Cups.

In the ever-evolving landscape of international cricket, squad selections for major tournaments are often subjected to rigorous scrutiny. Afghanistan, a burgeoning cricketing nation, made signific??ant strides in the 2019 Cricket World Cup, showcasing notable performances.

However, the 2023 World Cup roster witnessed the omission of several integral players from the 2019 squad. While the team has evolved and grown stronger, let’s look at the players who were part of the 2019 World Cup squad but have not been selected for the 2023 CWC.

1.) Gulbadin Naib:

Gulbadin Naib, the former captain, played a pivotal role in Afghanistan’s 2019 World Cup campaign. Known for his all-round skills, he contributed with both bat and ball. His leadership qualities were commendable, and he played a key role in nurturing young talents. Despite his good performance in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2023, the right handed all-rounder failed to seal a squad in the CWC squad and will lead Afghanistan in the Asian Games 2023.

2.) Aftab Alam:

Aftab Alam, known for his ability to swing the ball and take crucial wickets, played a pivotal role as Afghanistan’s go-to bowler in the 2019 World Cup. Unfortunately, his absence from the 2023 squad can be attributed to a combination of injuries and fluctuating form. Injuries often disrupt a player’s rhythm and effectiveness, and this, coupled with form issues, has hindered his inclusion.

3.) Asghar Afghan:

Asghar Afghan, a revered icon in Afghan cricket, has served as the captain of the Afghanistan team. His astute leadership and substantial batting performances left an indelible mark, making him a household name. Hamid Hassan, affectionately known as Afghanistan’s ‘Blue Tiger,’ symbolises fierce pace and a commanding presence on the cricket field. His ability to intimidate batters with raw pace and hostility is unmatched. Unfortunately, injuries plagued his career, forcing him to endure frustrating periods on the sidelines. Despite making a strong comeback after battling these setbacks, his omission from the 2023 World Cup squad was surprising.

6.) Hazratullah Zazai:

The explosive left-handed opener burst onto the international scene with breathtaking displays. However, his omission from the 2023 World Cup squad leaves a notable gap at the forefront of the batting order. Zazai’s aggressive style and ability to provide rapid starts could have benefitted Afghanistan in the tournament, making his exclusion a subject of scrutiny and discussion within the cricketing fraternity.

7.) Mohammad Shahzad:

Ikram Ali Khil, a budding wicketkeeper-batter, exhibited significant promise during the 2019 World Cup. While his cricketing journ?ey is ongoing, he must bide his time for another ch?ance to represent his nation on the international stage.

The anticipation for Afghanistan’s performance in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 is palpable. The 15-member squad designated to represent Afghanistan in this tournament has already been unveiled. On October 7, Afghanistan is scheduled to commence their campaign against Bangladesh, set to unfold at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala.

The fourteenth match of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 saw England’s dominating win over Afghanistan. Jos Buttler & Co. decimated Mohammad Nabi’s Afghan side by 5 wickets.

Putting up a spirited bowling display, Sam Curran-starrer England bundled out Afghanistan for a paltry 112 in the 20-over contest. Left-arm-pacer Curran became the first England bowler to pick up a five-wicket haul in the shortest format of the game. Chasing 113 for victory, the Three Lions reached the finish line in 18.1 overs. Liam Livingstone remained unbeaten on 29 off 21 balls, with Moeen Ali (8 not out off 10) at the other end.

During the match, Livingston??e also produced one of the most amazing fielding efforts in the tournament.

Livingstone’s acrobatic catch

Livingstone once again proved his worth as a fielder by pulling off a sensation catch to dismiss Afghanistan opener Hazratullah Zazai.

It all happened in the seventh over of the first essay. Ben Stokes bowled a short-pitch deli??very wide outside off; Zazai tried to hit the ball for a maximum, but could only find?? Livingstone, who made a full-stretched dive to complete the catch at backward point.

“Coming into the tournament, there’s always a few nerves. We’ve been playing a lot of cricket to buld up to this point. There’s a lot of anticipation. To get out there and get a win under our belt is fantastic,” Buttler – the winning captain – said in the post-match presentation.

England will next take on Ireland in their second match of S??uper 12 stage at the Melbourne Cricket G??round (MCG) on Wednesday, October 26.

Afghanistan left-hande??d batsman Hazratullah Zazai smashed six back-to-back maximums in the match between Balkh Legends and Kabul Zwanan at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Zazai hit six sixes off Abdullah Mazari’s over en route to his blistering half-century off just 12 deliveries. His knock emulated Yuvraj Singh’s effort against England at Durban in 2007 during the inaugural ICC World Twenty20. Back then, Yuvraj smashed six sixes off a Stuart Broad over to move to a 12-ball half-century.

However, Zazai’s brilliant cameo failed to get his team over the line.

Earlier, Chris Gayle smashed 80 off 48 balls to help Bal?kh Legends achieve a mammoth total of 244 for six in 20 overs.
