In a shocking turn of events, Indian cricketer Hanuma Vihari, famed for his heroic performance in the Sydney Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2021, has announced his decision to quit the Andhra Pradesh cricket team. Vihari, in a detailed Instagram post, accused a fellow teammate of playing politics against him and influencing the state association to remove him from the captaincy. This revelation has spa?r??ked a controversy that has divided opinions within the cricketing community.

The public announcement and allegations from Vihari

Vihari’s decision to step down from the captaincy came after Andhra Pradesh’s heartbreaking 4-run loss to Madhya Pradesh in the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 season. In ??his statement, Vihari revea??led that the conflict began when he had a heated argument with the 17th player of the team during the first game against Bengal and the latter complained to his politician father, who, in turn, pressured the Andhra Pradesh Cricket Association to take action against Vihari.

Vihari further expressed his embarrassment at being asked to resign from the captaincy without any fault of his own. He highlighted his contributions to the team, including batting left-handed while suffering from injury and leading Andhra to the knockouts five times in the last seven years. The Andhra-born batter then explained that despite feeli?ng humiliated after all this drama, he still continued to play for the side out of respect for the game and his team.

“I was the captain in the first game against Bengal, during that game I shouted on 17th player and he complained to his dad(who is a politician), his dad in return asked the Association to take action against me,?/em> wrote Vihari in the long note.

“I felt embarrassed, but the only reason I continued playing this season because I respect the game and my team. Sad part is association thinks that players have to listen to whatever they say and players are there because of them. I felt humiliated and embarrassed but I’ve not expressed it out until today. I’ve decided that I’ll never play for Andhra where i lost my self-respect. I love the team. I love the way we’re growing every season but association doesn’t want us to grow,?/em> he added.

The controversy escalates as the player accused by Vihari reacts

The accused player, responding to Vihari’s allegations, claimed that he was abused by Vihari and emphasized that no one is bigger than the game. He alleged the use of foul language by Vihari in the dressing room, creating a public spectacle around the issue.

Team’s unified support to Vihari

The narrative took a surprising turn when the entire Andhra team came together to issue a letter urging the association president to allow Vihari to continue as the team’s captain. They defended Vihari, stating that the alleged inappropriate language is a norm in the dressing room and should not be taken out of context. Vihari shared the letter on his social media, captioning it with ‘The whole team knows!’

Team India completely dominated Day 1 of the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka at PCA Stadium in Mohali. The hosts posted a total of 357/6, thanks to outstanding batting displays, particularly from Rishabh Pant and Hanuma Vihari. Notably, this is the 14th time India have scored 350+ runs on th??e opening day of a Test, and six out of those instances have come against Sri Lanka.

Pant top-scored for India by smashing 96 from 97 balls and missed his century by just four runs. Hanuma, on the other hand, scored 58 off 128 deliveries. This was the fifth time when Pant got di??smissed in the 90s.

Pant’s nervous 90s:

  • 92 vs West Indies in Rajkot 2018
  • 92 vs West Indies in Hyderabad 2018
  • 97 vs Australia in Sydney 2021
  • 91 vs England in Chennai 2021
  • 96 vs Sri Lanka in Mohali 2022*

Ravindra Jadeja (45 no) and Ravichandran Ashwin (10 no) stayed unbeaten to take India to 357/6 at stumps on Day 1. Virat Kohli (45), Mayank Agarwal (33), Rohit Sharma (29) and Shreyas Iyer (27) also made some valuable contributions.

“Felt good going out in the middle. I was batting well, and I had a good preparation. Great opportunity batting at number three for India. I am happy to bat wherever the team wants me to, but my most preferred position is number three, I have done it in first-class cricket. I thought initially the ball was coming onto the bat well. But once the ball went old, it was difficult to time the ball well. Rishabh is a different kind of batsman, and it was a special innings. We all know how he bats, and it was a special innings today. He helped us get to 350+ on the first day, which will be helpful going forward,” said Vihari after the end of the day’s play.

In the ongoing second Test between South Africa and I??ndia at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, the h??osts have come on top courtesy of top-class bowling performance.

The Proteas’ bowling attack dismantled India’s top order on Day 1, claiming three wickets in the first session. After losing three wickets for just 49, the duo of KL Rahul and Hanuma Vihari tried to calm things down. It looked like India were rebuilding in the post-lun??ch session with the pair of Rahul, and V?ihari added 42 runs for the fourth wicket.

However, the partnership was broken by Rassie van der Dussen‘s outstanding catch at the short-leg position. It all happened during the 39th over of India’s first innings bowled by Kagiso Rabada. The right-armer delivered a short and quick delivery directing at Vihari’s ribs.

Vihari stretched a little forward and tried to fend it away but ended up getting an inside edge that lobbed towards a short leg. Van der Dussen showed dazzling reflections, diving to his left, and plucked a stunning one-handed catch to cut short Vihari’s innings.

Here is the video:

Earlier, India won the toss and elected to bat first. The home team entered the game with one change in the form of regular skipper Virat Kohli, who missed out due to an upper back spasm. In th?e absence of Kohli, Vihari was added to the playing XI, and Rahul was appointed to lead the side as stand-in captain.

“Unfortunately, Virat has had an upper back spasm, the physios are working on him, and hopefully, he’ll recover for the next Test. Hanuma Vihari comes in place of Virat. Just the one change. It was a good Test at Centurion overall. We really performed well as a team and are really excited about this match,” said Rahul during the toss.

The home team also made one change by including Kyle Verreynne to replace Quinton de Kock, who had recently announced his retirement from the longest format.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 16-man squad for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand last week. Shreyas Iyer h?as received a maiden call for the two-match Test leg starting fr??om November 26.

Regular skipper Virat Kohli has been rested for the opening match and will be available in the second Test. In Kohli’s absence, Ajinkya Rahane will lead the Indian team in first Test while Cheteshwar Pujara shall be his deputy.

Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Shardul Thakur and Rishabh Pant have been rested for the red-ball series.

Hanuma Vihari, who has a good number in Test?? matches, was overlooked while Shreyas has been picked?? in his place. Iyer has not played a single Test for India till now.

Shreyas is being prepared as a backup option in the middle order

Shreyas has been selected in the Test squad so that the right-hand batter can be groomed as a backup option in the middle order.
As per the reports, India head coach Rahul Dravid has advocated for shadow tours ahead of every big assignment. The major reason for excluding Vihari and Prithvi Shaw, and sending them to South Africa with India A is to make them ready for the conditions. If they do well there, then they will be inducted into the Test te??am against the Pro??teas in December.

?em>One must remember Dravid had advocated for shadow ‘A?tours. before every big away tour. Anyway, a larger squad will be there in South Africa. This allows Vihari and Prithvi to get used to the conditions and if they do well they will be inducted into the Test team in South Africa. Anyway, India never needed specialist batters till No. 7 in India. Ravindra Jadeja can bat up the order and R Ashwin too has been good on Indian pitches,?a source close to the development told TOI.

India’s Test squad for New Zealand series:

Ajinkya Rahane (c), KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara (vc), Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), KS Bharat (wk), R. Ashwin, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Jayant Yadav, Ishant Sharma, U??mesh Yadav, Md. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Team India’s squad for the upcoming home Test series against New Zealand on Friday.

Regular captain Virat Kohli was rested for the two-match series opener, and in his absence, Ajinkya Rahane was c?hosen to lead the side. Though, Kohli will join the Indian outfit as skipper in the second and last Test.

A few notable exclusions from the Test squad included T20I skipper Rohit Sharma, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, frontline pacer Jasprit Bumrah and middle-order batsman Hanuma Vihari. Players like Rohit, Pant and Bumrah w??ill be seen in the T20I series, starting November 17. But Vihari, who only plays Test cricket, was found missing from the red-ball squad, which surprised many.

Vihari has been a regular member of the Indian Test team for the last few years and has done reasonably well. He also saved India from a defeat in his last appearance against Australia in Sydney earlier this year. Hence, his omission raised several eyebrows, and fans slammed? the Indian board for ignoring Vihari.
