India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, fresh from a series-clinching win over Bangladesh in Kanpur, has picked the future pillars and overseas stars of Indian cricket. Ashwin’s praise for the youngsters came after India’s seven-wicket victory in a rain-hit Test at the Green Park, keeping them on track for a spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. The victory not only solidified India’s position but also highlighted the potential of the country’s emerging talents.

“Winning this game was important for us”: R Ashwin

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Ashwin, who claimed 11 wickets in the series, lauded captain Rohit Sharma’s leadership and mindset in securing the crucial win. He revealed that Rohit was determined to push for a result, even suggesting that India aim for a total of 230 to give their bowlers a chance, reflecting his positive, aggressive approach. “Winning this game was important for us,” Ashwin stated. “Rohit was keen that we needed at least 80 overs to bowl at them. He set the tone by stepping out aggressively right from the first ball.”

Ashwin names India’s future pillars

Ashwin shifted the spotlight to two young stars, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, who he believes represent the future of Indian cricket. Both batters played pivotal roles in India’s series win, contributing with vital runs at crucial moments. “Look, I think Yashasvi Jaiswal is a special talent. He plays freely and willingly. He’s just started his international career, as is Shubman Gill. Both of them are still in the formative years of playing Test cricket, but I believe they will be the future pillars and overseas stars for Indian cricket,” Ashwin remarked.

Ashwin emphasized that while Jaiswal and Gill have demonstrated immense potential, their growth will depend on gaining more experience in various conditions. “It’s just that they need to be able to encounter more and more new experiences and be able to identify for themselves what they need to work on. The raw material is there, and it’s evident to everyone that both of them are high-quality players,” he added.

The young duo will be crucial in India’s upcoming home Test series against New Zealand in October and November, followed by the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia later this year.

In a riveting second Test match at Kanpur from September 27 to October 1, India showcased their cricketing prowess with a convincing victory over Bangladesh by 7 wickets. The match highlighted the brilliance of India’s bowling attack and the explosive batting capabilities that have become synonymous with the team in recent years. After bowling out Bangladesh for a modest total in both innings, India demonstrated their dominance in the series, clinching the win on the Day 5 of the match.

Bangladesh’s struggles with the bat

Bangladesh’s first innings was a tale of resilience and collapse, as they faced a formidable Indian bowling lineup. The team struggled to find a rhythm early in their innings, with openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam both departing cheaply, contributing only 5 and 14 runs respectively. However, Mominul Haque emerged as the lone warrior ??for Bangladesh, crafting a determined century.

His innings of 107 runs came off 194 balls, characterized by solid defense and selective aggression, featuring 9 fours and 2 sixes. Mominul’s knock was crucial in stabilizing the innings as wickets tumbled around him, but he lacked support from the other batters. The middle order crumbled, with only Liton Das making a significant contribution of 34 runs. The Indian bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah (3 wickets) and Akash Deep (2 wickets), maintained consistent pressure, exploiting the conditions effectively to bowl Bangladesh out for a mere 233 runs.

India’s commanding batting performance

In response, India came out with an aggressive mindset, intent on building a substantial lead. The Indian innings was highlighted by an explosive start, led by openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. However, it was Yashasvi Jaiswal who truly lit up the innings with his breathtaking stroke play. Jaiswal’s remarkable innings of 72 runs came off just 51 balls, including 12 boundaries and 2 sixes, demonstrating his ability to do??minate bowlers wi?th both timing and power.

KL Rahul supported him well, scoring a brisk 68 runs off 43 balls, ensuring that India stayed ahead in the game. The Indian middle order contributed vital runs, but it was the lower order that added crucial runs towards the end, leading to a declaration at 285 for 9. This substantial lead of 52 runs gave India a solid fo??undation ?for their bowling attack to dismantle the Bangladeshi batting line-up once more.

Bangladesh’s resilience and final collapse

In their second innings, Bangladesh displayed slight improvement but still fell short of posting a competitive total. Openers Shadman Islam and Zakir were dismissed quickly, leading to early pressure. Despite Shadman’s effort to anchor the innings with a score of 50 runs, the lack of significant ??partnerships meant that Bangladesh struggled to build momentum.

They could only manage 146 runs, once again falling prey to India’s disciplined bowling. Ravindra Jadeja and Bumrah were particularly impressive, each claiming 3 wickets in this innings, ensuring that the Bangladeshi batters faced continuous challenges. The Indian bowlers consistently targeted the stumps and maintained tight lines, which resulted in Bangladesh’s innings folding quickly and setting a modest target of 95 runs for India to chase.

India’s confident chase

Chasing 95 runs, India encountered a few hiccups at the start, losing Rohit and Shubman Gill early in the innings. However, Jaiswal once again stood out, scoring an unbeaten 51 runs to guide India closer to victory. His aggressive batting style, combined with calculated shots, ensured that the req??uired run rate remained under control.

Kohli, with his experienced presence, played a steady role, finishing the innings on 29 not out. The pair put together a crucial partnership that effectively secured the victory for India. Ultimately, India reached 98 for 3 in just 17.2 overs,?? sealing the match and the series with a commanding pe??rformance.

The third day of the second Test between India and Bangladesh at Green Park, Kanpur, wa??s completely washed out due to wet outfield conditions, following overnight rains. This unfortunate turn of events marked the second consecutive day without any play, as inclement weather also preve??nted action on Day 2.

A fan’s frustration goes viral on social media

Many supporters, who traveled from distant locations to witness the much-anticipated match, expressed their disappointm?ent at the lack of play. One particularly vocal fan took to social media to voice his frustrations. In a video shared online, he highlighted that des?pite no rain falling on the ground, the authorities had failed to prepare the pitch for play.

“This Kanpur stadium is so old, there’s no drainage system or anything. It’s not raining at all. If it had been any other venue, the covers would’ve been off by now and the match would’ve begun. There’s not a drop of rain since morning and water is just lying there on covers. The conditions of the ground are appalling and I don’t think it will get any more matches going forward,” the fan said in the video.

Concerns over venue readiness

Earlier, Sanjay Kapoor, the venue director for the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA), had assured that they were adequately prepared for heavy rainfall predicted before the game. Additionally, prior to the match??, the Uttar Pradesh Public Works Depar??tment deemed the upper block of the C stand unsafe and advised against filling it to full capacity.

Historical context of Green Park

Green Park has been the? host to 40 international matches, which include 24 Tests, 15 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and a single T20I. The ongoing Test ma??rks the 24th Test at this venue. The last match held here, between India and New Zealand in November 2021, ended in a draw due to poor light on Day 5.

Hope for action in the coming days

As the match has seen only 35 overs bowled so far and two full days lost, fans are eager for some cricket action on Days 4 and 5. Weather forecasts predict a 20% chance of rain on Day 4 and a 10% chance on Day 5, leading supporters to hope for improved conditions and an opportu??nity for play.

The second Test match between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur has been marred by incessant rain, resulting in the cancellation of second day’s play. Despite the rain subsiding and the super-soppers being deployed, the outfield remained too wet for cricket to be played. This follows a similar fate in the recent AfghanistanNew Zealand Test match in Noida, which was also abandoned due to rain.

Kanpur’s drainage woes and fans frustration

The cancellation of Day 2 due to rain has once again exposed the glaring deficiencies in Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium’s drainage infrastructure. Despite the rain subsiding and the ground staff working tirelessly to dry the outfield, the persistent moisture made it unplayable. This has led to widespread criticism and frustration among cricket fans on social media.

X has been flooded with tweets expressing disappointment and anger towards the BC??CI and the stadium management. Fans have pointed out that such a major Test match should not have been scheduled at a venue with such inadequate drainage facilities. Many have questioned the decision-making process and lack of foresight in selecting Kanpur for this important fixture.

Impact of a draw on WTC standings

A draw in the IND vs BAN 2nd Test would have significant implications for the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. India, currently leading the table with a win percentage of 71.67, would still maintain their top position but with a slightly reduced advantage. While four points from a draw would keep them at the summit, it would also increase pressure on the team to perform well in upcoming series against New Zealand and Australia.

Sri Lanka, on the verge of a 2-0 series sweep over New Zealand, are emerging as a strong contender for the top two spots in the WTC standings. Their consistent performance and the possibility of a clean sweep over New Zealand would significantly boost their chances of challenging India’s dominance.

India won the toss and elected to bowl first in the second and final Test of the two-match series at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. Coming off a comprehensive 280-run victory in the first Test at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, India retained their winning combination, opting for an unchanged XI.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, made two changes to their side, replacing Na??hid Rana and Taskin Ahmed with Khaled Ahmed and Taijul Islam.

Indias captain, Rohit Sha?rma, emphasized the need to capitalize on the soft pitch early in the game.

“We are going to bowl first. The pitch seems a bit soft, so we have to make early inroads, and we want our three seamers to make use of it. We didn’t start well with the bat in the first game, but we found a way to score, and the bowlers did the job. I expect no different here – we will be challenged, but we have the experience to bounce back. Same team,” Rohit stated during the toss.

On the other hand, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto expressed co?ntentment with batting first, believing his team has the opportunity to put pressure on India by putting up a substantial score.

“Happy to bat first, we wanted to bat anyway. As a batter, if we get a start, we have to score well. I hope our batters can score big today. Looks like a good wicket to bat on. New ball batting will be key though. Two changes. Nahid and Taskin aren’t playing. Taijul and Khaled are in,” Shanto said, highlighting the import?ance of their top-order performance.

Bangladesh struggled in the first Test, particularly with their batting, and will be looking? to rectify that in the series finale.

Reason for Kuldeep Yadav’s omission

Despite his solid performances in recent matches, Kuldeep Yadav did not feature in India’s playing XI for this Test. The decision was influenced by overcast conditions in Kanpur, which prompted the Indian team management to favour a more pace-heavy attack, expecting early movement from the pitch. The playing surface at Green Park traditionally offers assistance to the bowlers early on, with straw-colored grass providing enough movement to trouble the batters. Historically, first-innings totals are higher, but scores tend to decrease as the game progresses.

Team India’s vice-captain Rohit Sharma, who smashed a brilliant century to help India clinch the final ODI of three-match series against New Zealand, credited the win to the team’s bowling unit for pulling back the match from New Zealand.

Rohit Sharma interview

Rohit, who scored his 15th ODI hundred on Sunday, showered praises on Bhuvneshwar Kumar and young fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who claimed three wickets and affected a crucial run out of Tom Latham.

“It was not easy for the fast bowlers today due to the wet field. The Kiwis needed just 35 runs in four overs which was an easy task for them but just because of these two (Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar) we were able to pull back the match,” he said during the post-match interview.

The 30-year-old cricketer, while praising the bowling unit of the Indian team said, “Our bowlers did exceptionally well to comeback every now and then. This is what we expect from our bowling unit. Whenever they are put under pressure they know how to come back and this has not happened just once.”

Jasprit Bumrah held his ne?rve in the th??ird ODI and helped India win the series in a nail-biting contest at Kanpur.

Tom Latham got run out by Bumrah and MS Dhoni on the fifth ball of the 48th over which turned out to be the turning point of the game. Bumrah bowled a superb yorker to Colin de Grandhomme and all he could do was to save his stum?ps.

The ball went towards Dhoni who threw it towards Bumrah as Grandhomme and Latham were involved in a huge mix-up. Latham was way down the pitch and had to return as Grandhomme was not ready t?o take a single. Bumrah hit the stumps directly an??d it gave India the most crucial wicket they needed in the death overs.

However, when Dhoni threw the ball towards Bumrah he had enough time to run ??towards the wickets and dislodge the bails. But, Bumrah went with his ?instinct and took a shot at the stumps and it worked. After the wicket, Dhoni was laughing and signalling to Bumrah that he could have run towards the wickets and dislodged the bails.
