Kamindu Mendis showcased his remarkable talent for Sri Lanka during the second Test against New Zealand, hitting his fifth hundred in just 13 innings – a testament to his extraordinary start in Test cricket.

Stellar performance in Galle by Kamindu Mendis

The milestone was achieved on Day 2 of the match at the Galle International Stadium, where Kamindu’s performance propelled Sri Lanka past the 400-run mark. Mendis reached his century in 147 balls, marking his second ton of the series and his third fifty-plus score in as many innings. His innings included a significant partnership with Angelo Mathews, as the duo amassed a 100-run stand for the fourth wicket in 125 balls during the first session of the second day. This performance underscored Kamindu’s pivotal role in stabilizing the Sri Lankan innings.

Contributions from Teammates

Earlier, Dimuth Karunaratne provided a solid start with 46 runs before being run out. Dinesh Chandimal played a pivotal role, scoring 116 off 208 balls, and showcasing resilience at the crease. Mathews contributed significantly with 88 runs, anchoring the innings effectively. Dhananjaya de Silva added 44 runs, while Kamindu remained unbeaten on 113, accelerating the scoring towards the end. Sri Lanka demonstrated depth in batting and so far reached 445/5, capitalizing on the New Zealand bowling attack, particularly Glenn Phillips, who took three wickets.

Historic achievements for Sri Lanka

Mendis’ fifth century not only highlights his rapid ascent in Test cricket but also places him among the legends of the game. He is now joint-third fastest to five Test hundreds from debut, equaling the likes of Don Bradman and George Headley, both achieving the feat in 13 innings. Only Everton Weekes (10 innings), Herbert Sutcliffe (12 innings) and Robert Harvey (12 innings) have reached this milestone quicker??.

Additionally, Kamindu has set a new Asian record, eclipsing Pakistan’s Fawad Alam, who reached five centuries in 22 innings, while also surpassing Aravinda de Silva‘s Sri Lankan record of five hundreds in 38 innings. With his performances this year, Kamindu has overtaken Joe Root for the most Test hundreds, with ?five to his name.

Vinod Kambli currently holds the record for the quickest Asian to 1,000 runs, achieving the milestone in 14 innings. Kamindu’s stellar performance against New Zealand not only cements his status as a rising star but also raises expectations for his future contributions to Sri Lankan cricket.

Out-of-favour Pakistani cricketer Fawad Alam has officially brought his international career to a close after more than 15 years of representing Pakistan internationally on the cricket field. The left-handed batter’s decision to step away from the Pakistan cricket team marks the end of an era in his journey.

However, the talented cricketer is now gearing up for a fresh start as he prepares to join the Chicago Kingsmen as a local player in the Minor League Cricket T20 that follows the recently concluded Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 competition in the United States.

Fawad’s cricketing journey with Pakistan:

It is worth mentioning that Fawad’s last appearance for Pakistan was in July 2022, during a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Subsequently, he was left out of the home series against England due to his below-par performance.

In his tenure representing Pakistan, Fawad contributed significantly to the team’s success. He made his debut in white-ball cricket in 2007 and went on to participate in 38 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 24 T20 Internationals (T20Is), amassing a total of 966 and 194 runs, respectively.

On the other hand, Fawad’s Test debut in July 2009 saw him become the first Pakistani cricketer to score a century on debut. He delivered many top-notch performances throughout his career and amassed a total of 1011 runs at an average of 38.88. His remarkable tally included five centuries and two half-centuries.

Apart from this, he accumulated impres??sive 14.000 runs in the domestic circuit in 201 first-class games. He was also a part of the T??20 World Cup-winning team of Pakistan.

Not the first Pakistani player to move abroad for opportunities:

Fawad’s transition to the Chicago Kingsmen places him among a cohort of Pakistani cricketers who have chosen to explore new avenues abroad and especially in the USA. The 37-year-old joined the likes of Sami Aslam, Hammad Azam, Saif Badar and Mohammad Mohsin on the list.

Apart from some of the most exciting Test matches, 2021 has also been a tremendous year for some batters across the different teams. England skipper Joe Root is the highest run-getter this year, while Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne has th?e best average among players who have scored more than 500 runs.

Speaking about the top batters of 2021, former India opener Aakash Chopra has picked his top five batters of 2021 on his YouTube channel. Chopra went with two Indians, and one each from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and England. Starting with the fifth position, Chopra named Pakistan batting sensation Fawad Alam.

Alam played 9 matches this year, scoring 571 runs at an average of 57 with the help of three hundreds and two half-centuries. While picking Alam, Chopra said: “Fawad Alam is there in the five names I have picked. He had faded into oblivion, but he has not stopped once he has made a comeback. He is grabbing every opportunity with both hands.”

After Alam, the cricketer-turned-commentator picked Sri Lankan batter Lahiru Thirimanne, who had a memorable year, espe?cially with his notable overseas performances. Thirimanne played sev?en matches and scored 659 runs at an average close to 51 with two tons and four fifties.

“Another name which is there in my mind is Lahiru Thirimanne. He has played against South Africa in South Africa, against England in England, against West Indies in West Indies and against Bangladesh at home,” said Chopra.

Following Thirimanne, Chopra went with two Indians in the form of Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma? to fulfil the third and second place, respectively. Both Pant and Rohit had produced terrific shows in 2021.

Pant’s heroics in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and Rohit’s excellent display in England helped them earn goodwill among the cricket fraternity. This year, Rohit is the second-highest run-getter (906 in 11 matches), while Pant is at the fourth position with 706 runs in 11 games.

“The third name in the list is Rishabh Pant. It is unbelievable that he is the fastest visiting wicketkeeper to reach 500 runs in Australia in Tests. The fourth name on my list is Rohit Sharma. He has been absolutely sensational. This is Rohit Sharma’s watershed year as a Test cricketer,” added Chopra.

For the number one position, Chopra picked England captain Joe Root. The 44-year-old heaped praises on the Englishman for his double centuries in both Sri Lanka and I??ndia and opined he was the ??best batter of 2021.

“The fifth name is Joe Root. The double century at Chennai in the first Test and a double century in Sri Lanka, back-to-back centuries against India in England. He has been a player par excellence. In my opinion, Joe Root has to be the best Test batter of 2021,” Chopra added further.

Fawad Alam’s sensational effort with the bat helped Pakistan dominate Day 3 of the ongoing second Test against West Indies at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.

Pakistan resumed the proceedings from their score of 212/4 as the second day of?? the match was called off due to rain and wet outfield.

Fawad, who got retired hurt on 76 on the opening day, walked back into the middle after the dismissal of Faheem Ashraf. The left-handed batter scored his fif?th Test hundred and ?remained unbeaten on 124 before the visitors declared their first innings for 302/9 in 110 overs.

In reply, the hosts lost their three wickets for just 39 runs in 18 overs. Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi drew the first blood by removing Kieran Powell (5) in the fourth over. The left-armer didn’t just stop there as he cleaned up Windies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite (4) in his next over. Soon, Ashraf also joined the party and dismissed Roston Chase (10).

After a stellar effort with the willow, Fawad said it’s always happy to reach a triple-figure mark and revealed that his father has been his biggest motivation.

“It was challenging. The conditions weren’t easy; heat and humidity, and we were 2 for 3, and we had to come back. We needed a partnership, and that’s what Babar and myself did,” said Fawad after the end of the day’s play.

“I am very happy. Whenever you score a century for your country, you feel proud. I try to keep it simple. I keep speaking to my father; he always kept telling me that my time will come and to believe in myself,” the 35-year-old added.

Pakistan middle-order batsman Fawad Alam shined with the bat on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test against South Africa at the National Stadium in Karachi.

The left-handed stroke-maker smashed his Test career’s third century, and with his triple-figure mark, he joined an elite group.

Fawad is now the only Pakistan batsman to convert each of his first three half-centuries into a hundred. His first century came in 2009 against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Then, 10 years later, Fawad made a comeback in the longest format and scored his second ton against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui in December 2020.

The 35-year-old joined England’s Ravi Bopara in an elusive list. Both Fawad and Bopara have converted all of their half-centuries into hundreds. However, George Headley holds the world record for havi?ng convert??ed his first six half-centuries into tons.

Fawad came into bat when Pakistan were struggling on 27/4. He showed immense patience and determination to stitch crucial partnerships with Azhar Ali and Mohammed Rizwan before helping Pakistan take the first-innings lead with Faheem Ashraf.

Fawad added a 94-run stand with Azhar, who scored his half-century before Keshav Maharaj dismissed the former Pakistan skipper. Then, the Karachi-lad formed another 55-run partnership alongside wicketkeeper-batsman Rizwan, who was removed by Lungi Ngidi for 33.

??Fawad did not just stop there a??s he further featured in another vital 102-run stand with Ashraf before Ngidi dismissed the centurion on 109.

Ashraf was cleaned up by Anrich Nortje in the 101st over. He scored 64 off 84 balls. At stumps, Pakistan have reached to 308/8 and are leading the visitors by 88 runs.
