One of England’s finest bowlers, James Anderson, warmed up for the upcoming Ashes by claiming the prized scalp of former English captain Sir Alastair Cook in his first County Championshi?p appearance for 11 months at County Ground in?? Chelmsford on Thursday.

England’s all-time leading wicket-taker began the opening over of Lancashire and took just three balls to draw the first blood by dismissing Essex opener Nick Browne for a 3-ball duck. A few overs later, Anderson caught the big fish in the form of Essex ?stalwart Cook.

The Burnley Express ca??me round the wicket and bowled a wobble seam delivery which was pitched at the good length. The red leather came back in sharply and struck the front pad of Cook, who was playing the forward defensive shot.

As soon as the ball struck Cook’s pads, Anderson, along with his other teammates, went for a loud appeal. The on-field umpire was convinced and gave the decision in the fielding team’s favour as Anderson bagged his second scalp. The right-arm pacer, who plans to play in three or four of Lancashire’s matches before the Ashes against Australia on June 16, finished with two wickets for 33 from 11 overs as Essex reached 98/3 at stumps on the opening day.

Here is the video:

Earlier, Lancashire’s decision to bat first on a straw-coloured wicket turned horribly wrong as they lost six wickets for 86, with Sam Cook completely destroying the batting unit of the visiting side. Cook ended up with five wick?ets for 42, and it appeared Essex would pack thing??s early.

However, promising Lancashire keeper-batter George Bell had led what could prove a decisive recovery by smashing a brilliant half-century. B??ell scored a crucial 60 with the help of 10 bo?undaries and was well supported by Tom Hartley, who made 33, including 5 fours and a six.

Essex Eagles pulled off a remarkable las?t-ball finish to win their first T20 Blast title last night and they had their ubiquitous captain Simon Harmer to thank in every way.

All-rounder Harmer took three for 16 inclu??????????????????????????ding the key wicket of Moeen Ali as Essex restricted the defending champions Worcestershire Rapids to 145 for 9 after winning the toss and bowling at the tricky Edgbaston surface.

Essex’s title ambitions looked in tatters when Moeen dismissed Ryan ten Doeschate and Dan Lawrence in quick succession to leave them struggling at 82 for 5 by the end of the 14th over.

But Ravi Bopara, who made 36 off 22 balls, revive??d their hopes to leave Essex requirin??g 12 off the final over.

They managed just six from the first four balls ??against Wayne Parnell before Harmer smacked his compatriot for successive boundaries to propel Essex to a thr??illing win.

“We said at the beginning of the competition it’s always been about the County Championship and we’re just happy to be in the T20, but I really, really wanted that.

“It was one of those days were everything came off, my bowling and my batting. It’s a special night,” the Essex captain Harmer told BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra.
