Australia defeated England in the second One-Day International (ODI) at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) to seal the three-match series on Saturday.

Batting first, the hosts posted 280/8 on the board in their assigned 50 overs thanks to brilliant half-century by Steve Smith. The former Australia skipper partnered with Marnus Labuschagne after losing their opening batters early.

Smith and Labushchagne formed a crucial stand of 101 runs for the third wicket before the latter was dismissed for a well-made 58 off 55 deliveries.

Smith continued tickling the scoreboard and built another vital partnership of 90 runs with Mitchell Marsh (50) for the fifth wicket. Smith was cruising towards his triple-figure score but fell short by six runs as leg-spinner Adil Rashid dismissed him. The New South Wales batter went on to score 94 from 114 deliveries, with the help of five fours and a six.

In response, England had a shaky start as they lost three wickets for just 34 before James Vince and Sam Billings calmed things down. The duo added 122 runs for the fourth wicket to keep England in the game.

However, the situation changed dramatically when Australia’s stand-in skipper Josh Hazlewood got rid of Vince (60) and broke the partnership. The dismissal of Vince triggered a collapse with England being all out for just 208 in 38.5 overs, losing the contest by 72 runs.

For Australia, Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa shined with the ball. Starc picked up a 4-fer for 47 runs in 8 overs, including a maiden. Similarly, Zampa too bagged four scalps while conceding 45 runs in 9.5 overs.

“It looks easy to bat on when a partnership is going. But only a wicket away from causing a collapse on such a pitch. Very happy with 280. It’s good fun having captaincy. Will obviously hand it back to Pat for the last game. Will see what Melbourne dishes out. He said he’s back (Smith). Summer looks good for him,” said Hazlewood after the match.

Australian pacer Mitchell Starc has continued his sensational form in the ongoing One-Day International (ODI) series against England. Starc, who dismissed English opener Jason Roy in the opening game with a beauty, has once again bowled a peach of a delivery to get rid of Dawid Malan in the second ODI at Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

Malan, the centurion from the Adelaide ODI, was gone for a duck as he had no answers to Starc’s remarkable bowling. It all happened in the first over when the left-arm fast bowler was delivering thunderbolts.

Starc first dismissed Roy (yet again) on the second ball and removed Malan on the fifth delivery. He bowled at a good length, and the angle drew Malan into the clip. The ball pitched and then deviated, only to go past Malan’s defence and crash into the off-stump.

Here is the video:

Earlier, Australia managed to put 280/8 on the board in their allotted 50 overs on the back of phenomenal batting display from former skipper Steven Smith. The right-handed batter continued from where he left in the series opener and went on to score a brilliant 94 from 114 deliveries, with the help of five fours and a six.

Apart from Smith, Marnus Labuschagne (58) and Mitchell Marsh (50) chipped in with valuable half-centuries to propel Australia to a competitive total. For the tourists, Adil Rashid was the pick of the bowlers, taking a three-wicket haul for 57 runs in his quota of 10 overs. Besides the leg-spinner, Chris Woakes (2/42) and David Willey (2/44) also bagged two wickets each.

The ODI and T20I World Cup winners, England, are currently involved in a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against Australia. In the recently-concluded opening game at Adelaide Oval on Thursday (November 17), England, after being invited to bat first, posted 287/9 runs on the board.

Though the visitors were in deep trouble, having lost four wickets for just 66, but number three batter Dawid Malan and captain Jos Buttler calmed things down. The duo added 54 runs for the fifth wicket before Buttler was dismissed. However, Malan stayed in the middle and went on to smash a brilliant hundred. He hammered 12 fours and four sixes during his 134-run knock off 128 balls.

The tally of Malan’s sixes could have been five, but an unreal effort from Ashton Agar saved a certain six. It all happened on the final ball of the 45th over bowled by captain Pat Cummins.

Cummins dropped it on the hard length, and Malan pulled in front of the square. It appeared that the ball would easily sail over the boundary for a maximum, but Agar showed his acrobatic fielding skills at deep mid-wicket. He jumped up, plucked the ball and threw it back in before crossing over the fence.

Here is the video:

Notably, this series is part of England’s tour down under that began with a T20I leg in October, right before the T20 World Cup 2022. England had won the three-match T20I series by a margin of 2-0 and would definitely be aiming to replicate the same result in the ODI series as well. However, England’s hopes of whitewashing the Aussies is surely out of sight as they lost the opening game by six wickets.

Australia have suffered a massive blow ahead of their upcoming ODI series against England as superstar Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out due to injury.

According to Cricket Australia, Maxwell fractured his leg in the backyard during a birthday party and underwent surgery on Sunday (November 13). As a result, the 34-year-old is all set to miss the ODIs against England, and there are fears that he might miss the rest of the summer as well.

Notably, Australia will play a three-match ODI series at home that starts later this month before they travel to India in February next year for four Tests and three ODIs.

Chief selector George Bailey said Maxwell is in good spirits, and Australia will miss his presence as he was in such good form. Bailey also mentioned that a timeline on Maxwell’s recovery is likely to be revealed later this week.

“Glenn is in good spirits. It was an unfortunate accident, and we feel for Glenn in the circumstances, given he was in great touch in his last few games. Glenn is a critical part of our white ball structure, and we will continue to support him through his recovery and rehabilitation,” said Bailey in a statement as quoted by cricket.com.au.

Maxwell’s sudden injury also means that the Victorian will miss the Big Bas League (BBL) too for the Melbourne Stars. Reacting to the news, Stars general manager Blair Crouch said: “Glenn is obviously a huge part of the Melbourne Stars, and we wish him well in his recovery. He will continue to be a key part of the club during the start of the season as he works his way back to full fitness and we look forward to seeing him soon.”

Meanwhile, Sean Abbott has been called to replace Maxwell in the squad for the England ODIs. The three-match leg is set to begin on November 17 in Adelaide. The second ODI will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on November 19 and similarly, the third and final game takes place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on November 22.

Cricket Australia on Tuesday announced squads for the upcoming ODI and Test series. The selectors have shown faith in the squad that delivered a 4-0 Ashes triumph last summer for the two-match Test series against West Indies.

Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson and Mitchell Swepson are the only three names missing from Australia’s expanded Ashes group.

Despite their early exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup, it is unlikely that all-format players – Pat Cummins, David Warner, Steve Smith, Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood – will get an opportunity to play any red-ball game prior to the opening Test in Perth

Australia squad for West Indies Tests: Pat Cummins (c), David Warner, Steve Smith, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Scott Boland, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc.

Travis Head to open the innings in ODIs

With the retirement of former skipper Aaron Finch, Australia will see Travis Head pairing up with Warner at the top, a union that should continue through to the next ODI World Cup taking place in India next year.

Head has been pretty successful as an opener in one-day cricket in recent times. He averages 58.30 in List A matches since the start of 2019 with five hundreds to his name. He has every possible chance to leave behind the likes of Ben McDermott and Joshua Philippe for Finch’s vacant position.

The three-match home series against England, starting next week, will be Cummins first as full time captain. His appointment was done thinking in mind that he will be unlikely to feature in every series given the jam-packed international schedule, yet there were no notable absentees from Australia’s 14-man ODI squad picked to take part in games to be held in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.

Australia squad for England ODIs: Pat Cummins (c), Travis Head, David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne, Ashton Agar, Steve Smith, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa.

England have announced a 15-man squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia which will take place immediately after the ongoing T20 World Cup with fixtures on November 17, 19 and 22.

Opening batter Jason Roy has been recalled after being left out of the T20 WC squad.

Jos Buttler, England’s white-ball captain, described Roy as “my first choice as 50-over opener” during the tour to Pakistan last month. “We know what a brilliant player he is when he’s on song,” Buttler said. “He will be a vital player for England moving forward. His talent is never going to be in question.”

Eleven of the 15 players in England’s T20 World Cup squad will stay back in Australia for the ODI leg. Roy, Sam Billings, Olly Stone and James Vince will fly Down Under to join their team.

Vince last played an ODI match in July 2021, striking a 95-ball 102 against Pakistan. The 31-year-old has featured in 19 ODIs with 480 runs under his belt.

Billings, who has 25 ODI caps, last played a 50-over game against Sri Lanka in July 2021.

England ODI squad: Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali, Sam Billings, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Chris Jordan, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Olly Stone, James Vince, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Luke Wood.

Schedule:

  • First ODI: November 17, Adelaide Oval, Adelaide
  • Second ODI: November 19, SCG, Sydney
  • Third ODI: November 22, MCG, Melbourne

Australia survived a possible whitewash as the third and final T20I against England was abandoned due to consistent rain interruptions during the contest at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Friday. The game was reduced to 12 overs per side, where the tourists managed to post 112/2 after being asked to bat first. In response, the hosts lost three wickets in 3.5 overs at 30 before the rain arrived again, forcing match officials to abandon the game

While the rain spoiled the party, there were quite a few moments in the match which grabbed everyone’s attention. One such incident was a mind-boggling fielding effort from Glenn Maxwell in the penultimate over of England’s innings.

It all happened on the fifth delivery of the 11th over, bowled by pacer Josh Hazlewood when Jos Buttler timed the ball perfectly towards the cover region. Hazlewood delivered full and wide of off-stump; Buttler reached out and scythed the drive through extra cover. For a moment, it looked like the white leather would easily beat Maxwell, who was sprinting towards the ball. But the Victorian slid at the right time and did splendidly well to pluck it with his right hand, stopping a certain boundary.

Here is the video:

“It was, there was quite a bit of rain yesterday and today as well, and we would have been happier with a full game. Credit to England, they outplayed us in all three games, but I thought the fielding was better on a slightly greasy surface tonight. We will take a couple of days off, recharge, enjoy each other’s company and start our preparations for the World Cup,” said Australia skipper Aaron Finch after the match.

Australia speedster Mitchell Starc warned England captain Jos Buttler to stay inside his crease at the non-striker’s end in an on-field chaos during the third and last T20I between the two sides in Canberra on Friday, October 14.

After delivering the fourth ball of his over to Dawid Malan, who jabbed it back to the bowler, Starc turned and pointed at Buttler.

The left-arm pacer appeared to say something to Buttler which was not audible, but the stump mic did pick up Buttler saying: “Don’t think I was”.

Television visuals and screenshots posted on social media of the delivery suggested Buttler was just out of his ground before the ball was released and, after Starc’s words, he went back to his crease.

http://twitter.com/Donno79/status/1580845541763690496

Here’s the video:

Buttler has twice been run-out backing up. Firstly, during an ODI game against Sri Lanka in 2014 after two warnings from Sachithra Senanayake. And secondly, in IPL 2019, the then Punjab Kings skipper Ravichandran Ashwin ran Buttler out at the non-striker’s end when he left the crease early.

Australia versus England 3rd T20I highlights

After winning the toss in the final T20I, Australia captain Aaron Finch asked England to bat first. The match was reduced to 12 overs per side due to rain. England skipper Buttler top-scored for his side with 65 off 41 and remained unbeaten. Malan scored 23 off 19, while Ben Stokes ended up unbeaten on 17 off 10. Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins picked up one wicket a piece for the hosts.

The match was called off, with three sufficiently big rain breaks and umpires finding it difficult to get a result. The Aussies were reduced to 30/3 in 3.5 overs while chasing 130 runs for victory. England all-rounder Chris Woakes picked all three wickets dismissing Finch, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh.
