Senior Indian pacer Jhulan Goswami is undoubtedly one of the biggest legends in women’s cricket. Jhulan added another feather to her illustrious cap as she completed the landmark of playing 200 ODI games for Team India on Saturday.

The ‘Chakda Express’ completed the incredible feat in the recently concluded ICC Women’s World Cup game against Australia. However, the lanky fast bowler failed to pick a wicket in her 9.3 overs, where India eventually lost the game. Last week, Jhulan became the first bowler in women’s cricket to take 250 ODI wickets in the last game against England.

In the meantime, Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry has congratulated Jhulan on completing the landmark of 200 ODI matches.

Perry termed Jhulan as a truly wonderful player and person, calling herself lucky to play against the veteran Indian speedster.

“An incredible achievement from a truly wonderful player and person. Congratulations, Jhulan Goswami, we’ve been very lucky to play against you,” Perry wrote on Twitter.

Overall, Jhulan is the second player in the history of women’s cricket to play 200 matches, after her teammate and Indian captain Mithali Raj, who has featured in 230 games till now. In ODIs, Jhulan has so far taken 250 wickets at an average of 22.08, with 6/31 being her best figure.

Notably, ahead of the India versus Australia match, Perry had heaped praises on Jhulan, terming her a talisman for the Indian team.

“I think not just myself, but our entire team has tremendous respect for Jhulan. You know what she’s done for the game, not just for the Indian team. But you know, the whole of women’s cricket globally is just unbelievable. I certainly admire her longevity as well, and just how successful she’s been over such a long period of time. You know, she’s such a talisman for the Indian team. She’s an absolute bedrock of that new ball. And it’s been really, really tricky to get away,” Perry had said as quoted by Scroll.

There is no doubt that India captain Virat Kohli is extremely popular in the cricketing world as well as amongst the fans of the fascinating game. In fact, one wouldn’t be wrong to say that the Delhi-born batsman is a household name across the world wherever cricket lovers follow the game and once again it has been reaffirmed by a recent study concerning the most popular cricketers in the globe.

According to a SEMrush study ?a popular SEO tool that specializes in keyword research, competitor analysis and Google Ad campaign optimization ?Kohli is the most popular cricketer in the world. He was searched online at an average of 16.2 lakh per month from January to June this year.

On the other hand, India also rocked the charts as the most popular cricket team. The Kohli-led side was searched an average of 2.4 lakh times per month in the same time frame.

Among the top 10, the other cricketers were Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, George Mackay, Josh Richards, Hardik Pandya, Sachin Tendulkar, Chris Matthews and Shreyas Iyer.

As per the concerned study, from January to June 2020, each cricketer, mentioned above was searched at an average of 9.7, 9.4, 9.1, 7.1, 6.7, 5.4, 4.1, and 3.4 lakh times, respectively.

When it comes to the cricket teams, the list headed by ‘Men in Blue’ features other teams such as England, Australia, West Indies, Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Afghanistan, and Zimbabwe. These teams were respectively searched 0.66, 0.33, 0.29, 0.23, 0.16, 0.12, 0.12, 0.09, 0.05, 0.04, and 0.03 lakh times per month.

Furthermore, women cricketers like Smriti Mandhana and Ellyse Perry were also searched in massive numbers. Both were ranked at 12th and 20th position, respectively. They also surpassed big names like Shikhar Dhawan and Yuvraj Singh.

“While we are not entirely surprised by the results of our study, we are excited nonetheless. Finding that Virat Kohli is the most searched cricketer, and India, the most searched cricket team is unsurprising, what’s surprising is that women cricketers are being searched more often than a lot of top-rated men,” said Fernando Angulo, Head of Communications, SEMrush.

“Our study suggests that stereotypes of cricket as a man only sport no longer hold. There is considerable enthusiasm about women cricketers and women playing cricket. In the future, there are likely to be many more women playing cricket, and India, as the most important cricket playing nation is likely to supply many of them,” he added.

Top 5 searched cricketers (SEMrush study):

  1. Virat Kohli
  2. Rohit Sharma
  3. MS Dhoni
  4. George Mackay
  5. Josh Richards

The virtual quarter-final fixture in Group A between defending champions Australia and contenders New Zealand was played at Junction Oval in Melbourne on Monday (March 2).

The White Ferns backed themselves to chase down the total after winning the toss, despite falling short by a whisker against India in their second game of the tournament.

Opener Beth Mooney’s 50-ball 60 steered the hosts towards an above par score of 155 in 20 overs. Captain Meg Lanning and Ashleigh Gardner gave ample support to the left-hander to lay a foundation for the likes of Elysee Perry and Rachel Haynes, who provided the finishing impetus.

However, their issues against slow-bowling were exposed yet again with Amelia Kerr (1/22) and Anna Peterson (2/31) putting brakes on Australia’s charge.

After losing the wicket of their hard-hitting opener, Rachel Priest, who gave quick start to the chase, it was up to their two most experienced campaigners.

The stage was perfectly set for Suzie Bates and Devine to take New Zealand home with the score at 53/1, by the end of eight over.

Moreover, it all changed when Georgia Wareham was handed the ball. The leggie turned the match around for Australia as she picked up three quick wickets during her spell, giving away only 17 to cause havoc in the Kiwi dugout.

None of New Zealand’s threatened to chase down the Australian total since, barring Katey Martin, who took the game deep with her knock 31, which came off just 17 deliveries.

Martins was left with too much to do, in the end, as Australia edged past New Zealand by four runs to book yet another semi-finals berth in the competition.

New Zealand suffered another loss despite getting heart-wrenchingly close to the total. Georgia Wareham was adjudged as the Player of the Match.
