In the 23rd match of the SA20 2025 at Boland Park, an electrifying display of bowling by Paarl Royals‘ left-arm off-spinner Bjorn Fortuin helped his team secure a six-wicket victory over Durban Super Giants.

Fortuin’s crucial wickets, including the dismissal of Kane Williamson, were key moments in the match that tipped the scales in favour of the Royals.

Bjorn Fortuin claims the big wicket of Kane Williamson

The turning point of the match came in the 13th over of the Super Giants’ innings. Fortuin, bowling with precision, removed the dangerous Williamson, who had been playing a steady hand for his team. In the 13th over of Super Giants’ innings, Fortuin delivered a back-of-a-length ball that kept low and came in with the arm. Williamson, who had been rocking back to cut the ball behind square, exposed his stumps and got beaten on the inside edge. The ball crashed into his off-stump, sending him back to the pavilion for a well-made 45 off 36 balls (5 fours, 1 six).

This was a critical wicket for the Royals, as Williamson had looked set for a bigger score and his departure tilted the match in the Royals?favour.

Here is the video:

Earlier in the game, Fortuin had struck in the very first over, sending Super Giants?opener, Quinton de Kock, back to the dressing room for a duck. De Kock, who had been looking to cut hard through the covers, tried to give himself room but was beaten by a slow ball from Fortuin. The ball clipped the inside edge of de Kock’s bat and deflected onto his pads, then crashing into the stumps.

This early wicket set the tone for the Royals’ bowling attack, leaving the Super Giants under pressure right from the start.

Paarl Royals’ chase down the target with ease

Despite a valiant effort from Marcus Stoinis, who top-scored for the Super Giants with a crucial 55 runs off 40 balls, the Super Giants struggled to build any substantial partnerships. Stoinis’ knock was vital for his team, but the lack of support from the other end meant the Super Giants could only post a total of 143 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. The Royals?bowlers, led by Fortuin and backed by Kwena Maphaka’s 2-wicket haul, kept the Super Giants under control throughout the innings, never allowing them to gain momentum.

Paarl Royals, in response, chased down the target with clinical precision. They scored 147 for 4 in just 19.5 overs, securing the win by 6 wickets. Rubin Hermann played a match-winning knock for the Royals, contributing an invaluable 59 runs. His composed and aggressive innings guided the team across the line, ensuring that the Royals emerged victorious in a crucial match.

In the 21st match of the SA20 2025 at Newlands, Cape Town, MI Cape Town‘s captain Rashid Khan produced a sensational bowling performance, taking two crucial wickets in quick succession to shift the momentum in his team’s favour. His outstanding spell, including the dismissals of Matthew Breetzke and Marcus Stoinis, was pivotal in MI Cape Town’s victory over Durban Super Giants.

Rashid Khan strikes early to break Matthew Breetzke’s stay

In the 6th over of the Durban Super Giants’ innings, Rashid made an immediate impact with the ball. Bowling to Breetzke, Rashid sent the opener packing with his very first delivery. The ball was floated up outside off, and Breetzke, trying to drive, managed only a thick inside edge, which clattered into the leg-stump. Breetzke’s painful innings ended at just 6 runs off 15 balls, with one boundary. His dismissal highlighted the challenging conditions for batters, with spinners proving to be a key threat on this wicket.

Rashid takes two in two to leave Durban Super Giants’ reeling

In the very next delivery, Rashid was at it again, this time removing the dangerous Marcus Stoinis for a golden duck. Stoinis, facing his first ball of the tournament, attempted to take on the leg-spinner but was undone by a well-pitched delivery that bounced higher than expected. Missing his attempted sweep shot, Stoinis saw the ball crash into the top of his off-stump, leaving him without scoring. This back-to-back double strike left the Durban Super Giants in a perilous position early in their innings.

Despite the early setbacks, the Durban Super Giants fought back through strong contributions from Kane Williamson and Heinrich Klaasen. Williamson top-scored with 56 runs off 44 balls, while Klaasen followed up with an impressive 66 off 43 balls. Their efforts helped the Super Giants reach a total of 149 for the loss of 6 wickets. MI Cape Town’s bowlers, besides Rashid, also contributed well, with George Linde, Trent Boult and Corbin Bosch each claiming a wicket.

In response, MI Cape Town chased down the target of 150 with ease, led by a brilliant knock from wicket-keeper opener Ryan Rickelton. Rickelton played an outstanding innings, scoring 63 runs off 41 balls, which included 3 fours and 6 sixes. His explosive batting set the tone for the chase, and MI Cape Town reached 154 for the loss of 3 wickets.

In Match 18 of the SA20 2025 clash between Durban Super Giants and Paarl Royals, Heinrich Klaasen showcased his wicketkeeping brilliance to dismiss Joe Root for a golden duck.

Heinrich Klaasen’s brilliant reflex catch sends Joe Root packing

On fifth ball of the first over, Chris Woakes bowled a back-of-a-length delivery outside off that shaped away late, tempting Root into an uncertain poke. The English batter, unable to resist the movement, edged it sharply, but Klaasen’s lightning-fast reflexes ensured the breakthrough. Positioned slightly to his right, Klaasen took an exceptional catch in front of his face, demonstrating outstanding hand-eye coordination and athleticism. The dismissal was crucial for the Super Giants, as Root’s early departure derailed the Royals?plans for a steady start in the chase. Woakes?precision, combined with Klaasen’s sharp glovework, created the perfect opening. Klaasen’s effort not only lifted his team’s spirits but also set the tone for the Super Giants?bowling dominance.

Paarl Royals triumph over Durban’s Super Giants by 5 wickets

The Super Giants, after electing to bat, posted a total of 142/7 in their 20 overs. The innings started strongly, with Quinton de Kock (43 off 30 balls) and Matthew Breetzke (25 off 29 balls) forming a 50-run partnership in the Powerplay. However, the middle order faltered against disciplined bowling. The Royals began their chase with an aggressive start despite losing Root for a duck in the first over. Rubin Hermann played a scintillating knock of 44 off just 22 balls, hitting four boundaries and three sixes. Lhuan-dre Pretorius contributed a quickfire 25 off 13 balls to keep the Royals ahead in the Powerplay. Bjorn Fortuin‘s economical spell of 1/13 earned him the Player of the Match award.

Durban Super Giants will take on Paarl Royals in Match 18 of the SA20 2025 season. Scheduled for January 23 at Kingsmead Stadium, this match holds significant importance for both sides, albeit for contrasting reasons.

David Miller‘s Royals have been one of the most consistent teams this season, sitting comfortably in second place on the points table. Known for their balance and adaptability, the Royals have showcased their strength in all departments, making them a formidable force. With Miller leading from the front, the team will aim to solidify its position in the top two as the tournament progresses. On the other hand, the Super Giants find themselves at the bottom of the table, struggling to find rhythm and momentum. Despite their struggles, the Super Giants have an opportunity to turn their fortunes around with a strong performance in this fixture.

SA20|2025, Match 18:

  • Date and time: January 23, 03:30 pm GMT/ 09:00 pm IST/ 05:30 pm local
  • Venue: Kingsmead, Durban

Kingsmead Pitch Report

The Kingsmead pitch is known for its true pace and bounce, which makes it a haven for batters who enjoy playing their strokes freely. Historically, the venue has produced high-scoring T20 matches, and fans can expect another run-fest in this game. Bowlers, especially pacers, will need to maintain discipline and consistently hit back-of-a-length deliveries to extract any assistance from the surface. The track also offers some help to spinners, particularly in the middle overs, adding an extra layer of strategy for captains. With favorable batting conditions and a reputation for successful chases, both teams are likely to prefer batting second if they win the toss.

The much-anticipated second season of the SA20 is poised to captivate cricket fans as it kicks off in Gqeberha on January 10, 2024, and will conclude with an exciting Final a month later on February 10, 2024.

This cricket extravaganza promises riveting action as each of the six participating teams will host a home match during the opening week of the tournament. The season will encompass a total of 34 matches, played across six prominent venues in South Africa.

A noteworthy feature of the schedule is the consistency in start times. Midweek clashes will commence at 17:30 local time, creating an optimal evening atmosphere for spectators and viewers. Additionally, matches scheduled for Sundays will begin slightly earlier, at 15:30 local time.

As part of the organizational strategy, double headers will exclusively take place on Saturdays, offering an action-packed day for fans to relish. This condensed format ensures audiences are treated to back-to-back, thrilling encounters on weekends.

Structure of playoffs changed

While the tournament structure remains consistent with the inaugural season, where each of the six teams confronts all others twice, the playoffs format has been altered.

In the second season, the SA20 will embrace the qualifier-eliminator approach. The top two teams from the league stage will vie in the first qualifier, with the victor directly securing a place in the final. Simultaneously, the teams placed third and fourth will engage in an eliminator, seeking a chance to progress.

The team emerging triumphant from the eliminator will face the losing side of the first qualifier in Qualifier 2, a match that will determine the second finalist. This change in the playoff structure injects an element of unpredictability, ensuring that even the teams finishing third and fourth have an opportunity to contend for a place in the final.

A mini-auction for the 2024 edition has been scheduled for September 27, 2023.

The much-awaited SA20 league ?South Africa’s inaugural T20 tournament ?is all set to begin today, with MI Cape Town taking on Paarl Royals in the opening match at the iconic Newlands cricket stadium.

A total of 33 matches will be played from January 10 to February 11 in six venues. Apart from MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals, four other global franchises participating in the 20-over showpiece event are Durban Super Giants, Joburg Super Kings, Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals.

Before the 20-over competition starts, the SA20 announced exciting additions to its playing format. To endorse the innovation in the game, each captain can nominate 13 players to take the field ahead of toss. Further, after the toss, the captain will have the right to pick a final XI, while the remaining two players will become the substitute players.

In case of an intentional attempt to run out the batter, there will be no extra runs if a direct hit deflects off the stumps. Additionally, a bowled dismissal can’t lead to byes if the ball ricochets off the stumps on a free hit.

Moreover, if teams finish on equal points, the right to progress through to the final and in the play-off will be determined as follows:

  • If still equal, the team with the highest number of bonus points;
  • If still equal, the team with the highest net run rate;
