The cricketing world recently witnessed the spectacle of Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka smashing a double century in a One Day International (ODI) against Afghanistan. While the feat garnered praise and admiration, a South African fan took to Twitter to express a longing for a Proteas batter to achieve the elusive double-century milestone. In response, cricketing legend Herschelle Gibbs?? provided a no-nonsense answer, drawing o??n his own historic innings to highlight the significance of team success over personal milestones.

The ODI double century drought in South African cricket

The fan’s tweet highlighted the fact that despite some talented Proteas batters like Gary Kirsten, Faf Du Plessis, Quinton de Kock, and AB de Villiers coming close to the mileston??e mark, South Africa had not witnessed a batter breach the 200-run mark in ODI cricket.

“Still waiting for the first double century by a Proteas player in ODI cricket The likes of Kirsten, Faf, QDK and AB all came close, who will be the first?” quipped the fan.

Herschelle Gibbs’ blunt response

Gibbs, a stalwart of South African cricket, promptly responded to the fan’s inquiry with a blunt and honest remark. He stated that if personal milestones were a concern for him, he would have achieved a double century back in 2006. Notably, Gibbs subtly referred to his memorable innings in a historic run chase against Australia, where his remarkable 175-run knock played a pivotal role in South Africa’s record-breaking victory.

“Would have pissed it in 2006 if I was concerned about stats,” responded Gibbs.

Team success over personal milestones

Gibbs’ response highlighted the ethos of team cricket, emphasizing that individual achievements are secondary to the collective success of the team. His historic innings against Australia remain etched in cricketing history as a testament to the importance of prioritizing the team’s goals over personal records where the Proteas successfully chased down a colossal target of 434, securing the highest-ever run chase in ODI history.

On Thursday, Shubman Gill became the youngest batter to score a double century in ODI cricket and the fifth Indian to reach the landmark. Gill’s storming knock of 208 helped India defeat New Zealand by 12 runs.

There were only four Indian batters in the illustrious list before Gill, which included legendary Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan.

Kishan made it to the list recently when India toured Bangladesh, as he to??uched the 200-run mark at t??he age of 24 and became the youngest cricketer to smash a double ton. But with his recent exploits, Gill broke the record and achieved the feat at just 23.

Despite his blistering knock, Kishan didn’t get as many chances in the team and questions were raised by a few former cricketers regarding the same. The wicket-keeper-batter was benched in the entire ODI series against Sri Lanka until he fina??lly got the chance in th?e first match against New Zealand.

Kishan was included in the playing eleven as a replacement for KL Rahul, who is unavailable for the series due to some personal reas??ons. In the series opener, Kishan was sent down the order to bat at no. 4.

Now, a video ha??s been released by the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) that shows Rohit and Ishan welcoming Shubman to the 200 club after the victory over New Zealand.

The conversation starts with Rohit lauding Gill for his knock and Ishan asking about the p??re-match routine of the Punjab lad. Furth??er in the video Indian skipper welcomes Gill to the 200 club.

At the end of the video, Rohit can be heard saying to Ishan why he hasn’t played even three matches post scoring a double ton in the 50-overs format, to which the latter replies, “brother you’re the captain”. And soon after Ishan’s witty response, all three in the frame burst into laughter.

“Ishan, yaar aapne 200 banake 3 match nahi khela. (Ishan, you didn’t play even three matches despite scoring a 200),” Rohit said.

“Bhaiyya captain toh aap ho (Brother, you are the captain),” replied Kishan.

In the inaugural game of the  ongoing three-match series against New Zealand, Shubman Gill, slammed his first ODI double-century at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in H??y??derabad.

It was Gill’s second consecutive three-figure score in the 50-over format. A few days back, he scored a century in the third and final game against Sri Lanka and helped India register a record win.

Batting first, India started well with Gill and Rohit Sharma establishing a 60-run opening partnership, but soon after t?he dismissal of Rohit, wic??kets kept falling for the Men in Blue.

However, at one end, Gill batted tremendously and kept scoring runs throughout the innings. The 23-year-old reached the three-figure mark in 87 deliveries and became the fastest Indian batter and second across the world to touch the 1000-run mark in the fewest ODI innings. He took just 19 innings to reach the milestone. Notably, the record belongs to Fakhar Zaman of Pakistan, ??who achieved the feat in 18 innings.

In the penultimate over of India’s innings, Gill reached the 200 milestone. He became the 5th Indian and 12th overall cricketer to smash a double century in ODIs. For India, before Gill, only Rohit Sharma, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Ishan Kishan had scored a double ton.

In his knock of 208 runs in 149 deliveries, Gill hammered nine ??sixes and fourteen fours to power India to a massive total of 349/8. The Punjab lad also etc?hed the highest individual score by an Indian against New Zealand.

Fans on social media were thrilled to see Gill reaching the milestone, and love poured in ??for the right-handed batter from all over the world.
