The Surrey County Club scripted history in the County 2023 Division One match by chasing mammoth 501 runs against Kent on Wednesday (June 14). The chase by Surrey was the second highest in the history of the prestigious County Championship. Notably, Middlesex (502 runs) still holds the record for the highest chase in County cricket.

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Kent struggled against the Surrey bowlers and lost three of their top five batters for a duck. However, Jordan Cox hammered a brilliant 133 runs for his team and ensured that Kent finished their innings on a decent score of 301.

After bundling out Kent, Surrey failed to get even closer to their score and were bowled out for just 145 runs. Matthew Quinn and Wes Agar bagged three wickets each for Kent and played a major role in dismantling the Surrey line-up.

Further in the match, Kent yet again showed an impressive batting display and ended their innings on a total of 344 with an overall lead of 500 runs. Tawanda Muyeye top-scored for Kent and added 79 runs for them. Meanwhile, Hamidullah Qadri contributed 72 runs as well. Jordan Clark picked a five-wicket haul among Surrey bowlers.

Chasing a daunting total of 501 runs in the fourth innings, Surrey showcased a brilliant batting approach, with three of the team’s batters smashing hundreds and helping the side pull off a record run chase in the tournament’s history. Dom Sibley was the major contributor to the historic feat, as he scored 140 runs off 415 deliveries. In the meantime, the other notable contributions were from Ben Foakes (124) and Jamie Smith (114).

Apart from the record run chase, the match also saw a unique feat of the slowest century in County cricket that was attained by Sibley, who reached the three-figure mark in 368 deliveries and 511 minutes.

Indian spinners showed an exceptional performance with the ball in the ongoing second Test against England at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. On an exploding pitch, the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel reduced the visitors to 39/4 at lunch on Day 2.

One of the dismissals grabbed everyone’s attention when England opener Dom Sibley while playing a flighted delivery bowled by Ashwin ended up getting an upper edge. The ball got the turn and bounce after pitching in.

The red-leather struck on the back portion of Sibley’s bat and Indian captain Virat Kohli took a catch at leg slip.

However, the umpire adjudged it not out, but Kohli immediately reviewed the decision, and it was overturned as India got the second wicket.

For England, Moeen Ali was the pick of the bowlers as he finished with figures of 4/128 in the 29 overs. Apart from Ali, youngster Olly Stone also shined with the ball. The right-arm paceman picked up three wickets while conceding 47 runs in his 15.5 overs. Left-arm spinner Jack Leach also scalped two while skipper Joe Root bagged one.

After losing the first Test against West Indies in Southampton, England made a strong return in the ongoing second Test at Old Trafford in Manchester. The marathon innings played by all-rounder Ben Stokes and opening batsman Dom Sibley put the hosts on the driving seat on Day 2 of the second Test.

Both Stokes and Sibley began the proceedings with an overnight score of 59 and 86 runs. Just like the first day, the pair dominated and completely outshined the Caribbean bowlers. Sibley played proper old-school cricket with full of concentration and determination. While Stokes too showed guts and held his end for a long time.

Sibley smashed his second Test century right before the announcement of lunch-break, and Stokes reached the triple-figure in the second session. The Christchurch-born also registered history as he became the fourth cricketer to enter in an elite club of those batsmen who have scored 4000-plus runs, along with 10 centuries, and have taken 150+ wickets in the longest format of the game.

During the 126th over, Windies spinner Roston Chase provided the much-needed breakthrough by dismissing Sibley. The Warwickshire batsman was trying to up the ante but he mistimed a shot, and Kemar Roach at deep grabbed the opportunity. Sibley departed for 120, and with that, the 260-run partnership was also broken.

Stokes continued his golden touch and crossed the 150-run mark. He was looking well settled and cruising towards the double hundred before an ambitious reverse sweep shot against pacer Kemar Roach ended his incredible innings for 176. The southpaw smashed 17 fours and two sixes during his phenomenal knock.

It was a special moment for Roach as he took a wicket after 86.3 overs in Test cricket. The last dismissal that Roach made before Stokes’ was of India captain Virat Kohli. As England was preparing to score some quick runs after Stokes’ departure, Roach picked another wicket in the form of Chris Woakes who was gone for a duck.

English wicket-keeper Jos Buttler kept on tickling the scoreboard from one end. He scored 40 runs before Jason Holder sent him back to the pavilion. England spinner Dom Bess added a crucial 31 before England skipper Joe Root declared the innings on 469/9.

For the visitors, Chase completed his five-wicket haul and remained the most successful bowler. In fact, he was the third spinner who took a fifer in England in the last 50 years.

WI spinners taking 5-fers in England in the last 50 years:

  • 6/57 ?R Harper Manchester 1984
  • 5/34 ?C Gayle Edgbaston 2004
  • 5/172 ?R Chase this Test *

It was also the third most expensive five-wicket haul for West Indies.

Most expensive 5-fers for WI:

  • 5/266 ?OC Scott v Eng Kingston 1929/30
  • 5/179 ?S Shillingford v Ind Mumbai WS 2013/14
  • 5/172 ?R Chase this Test *

West Indies started their first innings with openers Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell. However, before the pair could get settle in the crease, England’s Sam Curran trapped Campbell in front and drew the first blood.

At stumps, West Indies reached 32/1 with Brathwaite not out on 6 while the nightwatchman Alzarri Joseph remained unbeaten on 14.

England have bounced back in the three-match series against West Indies after facing the defeat in the first Test at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. The hosts have managed to dominate sessions in the second Test even after losing the toss.

On Day 1, England all-rounder Ben Stokes, and opening batsman Dom Sibley outshined the Caribbean bowlers. A similar story was seen on Day 2 as well. Both Stokes and Sibley kept on scoring runs and troubling the West Indies bowlers.

Sibley slammed his second Test century right before the announcement of lunch-break, and Stokes remained unbeaten on 99. But as soon as the second session kicked-off, the Christchurch-born registered history when he smashed his Test career’s 10th century.

Stokes became the second England and fourth overall cricketer to reach in an elite club of those batters who have scored 400-plus runs, 10 centuries, and taken 150+ wickets in the longest format of the game.

4000 runs + 10 centuries + 150 wickets (Tests)

  • Garry Sobers ?8032+26+235 (93)
  • Ian Botham ?5200+14+383 (102)
  • Jacques Kallis ?13289+45+292 (166)
  • Ben Stokes ?4248+10+153 (65*)

After scoring the ton, Stokes was seen celebrating the achievement in his traditional style by bending the middle finger. The 29-year-old makes this sign to pay tribute to his dad who chopped off part of his middle finger so he could continue playing rugby league as he couldn’t afford to stop for an operation.

India legend Sachin Tendulkar also didn’t miss the opportunity to appreciate both Stokes and Sibley for their magnificent performance in the second Test.

“Partnership stitched up between @DomSibley & @benstokes to bail out England from a tricky position. They both applied themselves very well & have batted patiently to shift the balance in this Test. It has been a great battle between bat & ball in the 1st session. #ENGvWI” tweeted Tendulkar.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan termed Stokes as England’s best player, best fielder and most impactful bowler.

“England’s best player … England’s best fielder … England’s most impactful bowler … England’s best batsman at the moment delivers once again … @benstokes38 is a freak … nothing he cannot do … #TestCricket #ENGvWI” Vaughan wrote on Twitter.

betvisa loginDom Sibley – Cricket Times - betvisa888 bet http://betvisa68.com/2020/07/eng-vs-wi-dom-sibley-becomes-first-centurion-after-the-resumption-of-international-cricket/ Fri, 17 Jul 2020 12:55:01 +0000 http://betvisa68.com/?p=44524

The international cricket returned in style after England and West Indies played the first Test in Southampton post coronavirus outbreak. The visitors ended up winning the match by four wickets. However, no centurion emerged from the Ageas Bowl Test. But the story changed in the ongoing second Test at the Old Trafford in Manchester.

England opening batsman Dom Sibley became the first cricketer to score a century in Test cricket since the COVID-19 impact which stopped all the cricketing action. On Day 2 of the second Test, Sibley began the proceedings with an overnight score of 59 runs along with Ben Stokes (59).

West Indies bowlers, who looked completely out of touch in the second and third session on Day 1, continued their poor run on Day 2 as well. Although, there were some movements but the lack of consistency shown by the pacers couldn’t really put pressure on either Stokes or Sibley.

During the 106th over of England’s innings, Sibley sent the second ball of Alzarri Joseph’s over into mid-on and ran three runs to register his second Test hundred. Also, Sibley scored just four boundaries during his century. The last English batsman to make a ton with fewer boundaries was Graham Thorpe who did it against Pakistan back in 2000 with just one four.

Sibley played proper old-school cricket. It was indeed an innings which was full of concentration and determination. As soon as Sibley raised his bat in joy, the entire England team was seen on the balcony to applaud a special knock. Stokes too came over to congratulate him.

Here is the video:

Not just the teammates, the cricketing fraternity too showered praiseworthy comments for the Surrey cricketer for his extraordinary effort.

After defeating England in the first Test of the three-match series in Southampton, West Indies came prepared for the second Test in Manchester. Even the fortune favoured the tourists, as Jason Holder won the toss and elected to bowl first in bowling friendly conditions.

However, the Caribbean pace battery was unable to take the benefit of a new ball along with cloudy atmosphere. The ‘Player of the Match’ in the first Test, Shannon Gabriel looked out of touch on Day 1 of the second Test. Even Holder couldn’t produce magical spell as he did in the Ageas Bowl.

But right before the end of the first session, Holder brought his spinner, Roston Chase, in the attack and the offie didn’t disappoint his skipper. Chase first dismissed opener Rory Burns and then right after the lunch-break the Barbados all-rounder sent Zak Crawley back to the pavilion for a duck.

However, Dominic Sibley held his end and kept on surviving the overs. He was a bit slow in the run-making process but didn’t lose his precious wicket. After Crawley’s dismissal, Sibley added a 52-run stand for the third wicket with Joe Root.

The English skipper was giving positive signals until he was tempted to play a wide off-stump delivery by Alzarri Joseph. Root in an attempt to go after the pacer chased the ball with a flashy drive which tickled healthy outside edge and Holder grabbed an easy catch at second slip. Also, it was the fourth time that Joseph got the priced wicket of Root in the longest format.

Then came England’s stand-in captain in the Southampton Test, Ben Stokes, who stitched a vital partnership with Sibley and completely owned the second and third session. The pair took England from 81-3 to 207-3, adding as many as 126 runs for the fourth wicket.

At the end of day’s play, Sibley remained unbeaten on 86 while Stokes was on 59 not out.

For the tourists, only Chase turned out to be the most successful bowler, claiming two wickets for 53 runs in 16 overs. Joseph too bowled 15 overs and grabbed one scalp for 41 runs. Whereas, Kemar Roach, Gabriel and Holder ended the day without earning a wicket.
