In a surprising development, West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran has opted not to accept the Cricket West Indies (CWI) central contract for the 2023-24 season. Pooran’s decision comes alongside two other players who have declined the central contracts, marking a notable shift in the contractual landscape for West Indies cricket.

Three West Indies players decline central contracts

CWI a?nnually awards central contracts to players, recognizing and remunerating them for their commitment and contributions to the national team.

Along with Pooran, Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers have also declined central contracts but will ?be available to feature in the T20Is during the upcoming season.

The central contracts are traditionally seen as a symbol of stabi??lity and commitment, and the declinations are likely to prompt discussions about the fact??ors influencing these decisions.

“With a busy year of cricket ahead, in all three formats, we have held several detailed discussions with the two Head Coaches on the brand of cricket they want to play. We are very clear in the direction we want to go. The players who have been offered contracts are among those who we expect to feature, as we look to build towards challenging for the top spot when we host and compete in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on home soil,” said West Indies cricket team’s chief selector Desmond Haynes in his official statement.

“We also have away Test Series in Australia and England – these are two major assignments whilst in the 50-over format we look to build a nucleus of players aimed towards the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027,” he added.

Days after Dwayne Bravo publicly criticized Cricket West Indies (CWI) for excluding his brother Darren Bravo from the ODI squad for the England series, the left-handed batsma?n has made a si?gnificant announcement about his cricketing future.

Darren took to social media to share his decision to step back from West Indies cricket following his omission from the national squad. The controversy arose when selectors cited his age as a determining factor for exclusion, despite Darren’s outstanding performances in domestic tournaments.

Domestic dominance unacknowledged

Despite being the highest run-scorer in the Super50 and a consistent performer in regional tournaments, Darren was not selected for the ODI series against England. Over the last four year??s, he showcased exceptional form in domestic cricket, averaging 96.2, 65.0, 48, and 83.2 runs per inning. His recent achievement in leading the Red Force to victory in the CG United Super50 Cup Tournament earned him the Golden Bat, having scored 416 runs with a best of 139 not out and an impressive average of 83.2.

Disappointment over lack of communication

Expressing his disappointment on Instagram, Darren criticized the lack of communication from the selectors, stating that it left him in a ‘very dark place.’ He emphasized the challenges of maintaining the energy, passion, commitment, and discipline required to perform at his best without clear communication.

“I’ve taken some time to ponder and wonder what’s my next step moving forward as a cricketer. At this point in my career it’s not easy or should I say it takes a lot to continue to find the energy, the passion, commitment and discipline to be able to perform to the best of my ability and put myself in a position to make my return to international cricket. Without any level communication I’ve been left in a very dark place,” Darren wrote in his post on Instagram.

Not giving up yet

Acknowledging that his time might be up if he couldn’t secure a place in any of the three regional teams across multiple formats, Darren clarified that he was not giving up on his cricketing career. Instead, he emphasized that stepping away was a decision to make room for emerging talent and wished everyone the very best.

“At the moment there’s three teams representing the region in multiple formats/series. That’s approximately 40?5 players and if I can’t be in any of these teams after competing in our regional tournaments and scoring runs, therefore they are basically telling me that the writing is on the wall. I’m not giving up but I believe it’s best to step away just for a bit and maybe make some room for a young and upcoming talent. I will end by wishing each and everyone all the very best. “I’ve lived my dream” 46,” added Darren.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) recently revealed the 15-member men’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against England, set to kick off at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on December 03. While the roster includes a mix of familiar names and promising talents under the captaincy of Shai Hope, the absence of seasoned batsman Darren Bravo has left fans disappointed.

Dwayne Bravo voices displeasure at selector’s decision

Despite Darren’s notable performance in the Super50 tournament, where he amassed 416 runs in eight matches, the selectors opted to exclude him from the squad. In response to his brother’s omission, Dwayne Bravo took to social media to exp??ress his frustration and criticize the decision-making process of CWI.

Questions raised on selection criteria

Dwayne directed his criticism towards selector Desmond Haynes, questioning the criteria for team selection. In an Instagram post, he stated, “This is NOT acceptable, and I just can’t make sense of it! What’s the criteria for West Indies team selection? Surely, it can’t be solely based on performance?”

Disappointment with Darren Sammy and lack of trust in the system

Dwayne did not mince words when expressing disappointment with former West Indies skipper and current head coach Darren Sammy. He conveyed his expectation of a fair and trustworthy system under Sammy’s leadership, stating, “I hoped for trust in the system with figures like you, Sammy, and the new director of cricket, but the system failed again.”

Advocating for fair treatment and transparency

Highlighting Darren’s stellar performances in the recent tournament, Dwayne emphasized the need for fair treatment, respect, and transparency in player selections. He urged Windies cricket to address the mistreatment and dishonesty that players have allegedly faced over the years.

Message of encouragement to brother and best wishes to the team

Cricket West Indies (CWI), on Monday, unveiled the revised schedule for the 2023 season of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL). In contrast to the four matches played in the inaugural season last year, the upcoming edition will showcase a total of seven fixtures. The league is set to commence on August 30, with the highly anticipated final scheduled to be held on September 10 in Trinidad and Tobago.

The participating teams in the tournament include Trinbago Knight Riders, Barbados Royals, and Guyana Amazon Warriors. It is worth mentioning that during the 2022 edition, each team played one group game. Eventually, Trinbago Knight Riders, led by legendary Deandra Dottin, emerged victorious over Barbados Royals, captained by current West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews, in the final held in St Kitts.

In this edition, the group stage will adopt a double round-robin format, where each team will face each o?ther twice. The top two teams from the group stag?e will then advance to the final, competing for the ultimate title.

The scheduling of WCPL has been arranged in a way that avoids overlapping with the Women’s Hundred, which is set to take place from August 1 to 27. This separation in dates ensures that players like Hayley and Dottin can participate in the entire duration of the Women’s Hundred before the WCPL commences. Moreover, this schedule also enables players who have signed up for both tournaments to fully engage in The Hundred and WCPL without any conflicts.

Minister of Sport and Community Development Shamfa Cudjoe stressed upon the partnership between the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the CPL for hosting the final match of the 2023 Women’s CPL. Cudjoe also explained that the hosting of the final game serves as a valuable opportunity to support and promote women and girls in sports.

“Once again, the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is pleased to partner with the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) as we get ready to host the final match of the 2023 Women’s CPL. The hosting of this game comes at an opportune time as it strategically aligns with the goal of the Ministry’s ongoing Pink Reign TT campaign, which speaks to promoting women and girls in sport,” said Cudjoe as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced that the West Indies women’s team will receive the same travel and accommodation benefits as the men’s side. This includes flying in business class for long-haul international flights and staying in single rooms during international fixtures. Following the election of new CWI president Kishore Shallow, these decisions were made during the board of?? directors meeting.

Shallow explained that in order to promote gender equality and create an environment that fosters the growth and success of women’s cricket, such decisions have been taken.

“The women’s game in international cricket continues to evolve, and CWI must keep apace and, where possible, lead. Introducing these policies and adding a second female to the board as an independent director are monumental strides in the right direction,” said Shallow, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

CWI has also granted approval for the establishment of a new committee called the Women’s Cricket Transformation Committee. This committee will be dedicated to working towards achieving equality for women’s players within the cricketing framework.

“The committee’s remit will include but not be limited to recommending strategies geared towards increasing the interest and participation of women and girls in the sport, as well as proposing cricket competitions, events, and pathways that foster competitive women’s and girls’ cricket,” CWI said in a statement.

Wavell Hinds, the president and CEO of the West Indies Players ??Association (WIPA), expressed support and appreciation to CWI, hoping to achieve similar goals in the ongoing nego?tiations on the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between CWI and WIPA for another four years.

“We welcome this move by CWI in the quest to achieve greater equality within our work environment among our cricketers. We look forward to achieving similar goals in our ongoing negotiations on the renewal of our MOU for another four-year period,” said Hinds.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) recently announced the ??squad for the upc??oming ODI WOrld Cup Qualifiers, set to begin in June in Zimbabwe. While the likes of Shai Hope, Nicholas Pooran, Jason Holder and others were part of the outfit, powerful-striker Shimron Hetmyer was absent from the squad.

Many fans left guessing as to what could be the reason behind Hetmyer’s absence, who has done relatively well in the limited-overs squad for the Windies. Now, Desmond Haynes, who is the lead selector of men’s cricket in West Indies, has revealed why Hetmyer was not picked for the WC Qualifier as well as the three-match ODI series again?st UAE in Sharjah.

Haynes said that Hetm??yer did send an email confirming his availability for the UAE tour and WC Qualifiers but selectors decided not to include Hetmyer as Hope, who recently become the new captain for the ODI side, expressed his satisfaction with the unit that played in their last series against South Africa.

“Yes, Hetmyer was available. He did send through an email or correspondence to Jimmy [Adams], our director of cricket, stating that he was available for the tour. What we selectors decided to do was that we’ve just had a new [ODI] captain in Shai Hope and he was very happy to express his views about the type of camaraderie we had in the team in South Africa,” Haynes told reporters at a virtual presser.

“We as selectors saw commitment, we saw a real change in our approach to one-day cricket, and we thought it was only fair to stick with these guys,” he added.

Notably, Hetmyer has been absent from ODI matches since July 2021, and his most recent appearance for the national side came in a T20I match in August 2022. Further, he ?was excluded from the T20 World Cup squad last year due to his failure to board a rescheduled flight to Australia.
