India‘s recent performance in the ODI series against Sri Lanka has been quite disappointing. They lost the series 2-0, this outcome has been a “huge reality check” for India, implying that it has exposed some significant issues or weaknesses in the team.

India’s significant ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka

India’s defeat in the third ODI against Sri Lanka was quite significant. They lost by 110 runs at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. This loss was particularly noteworthy because it marked India’s first bilateral ODI series defeat to Sri Lanka since 1997. Overall, the defeat is serious not just because of the loss in the specific match, but also because it reflects a rare and impactful failure in a series context against an opponent they have traditionally performed well against.

Let’s take a note to explore the top five lowest team totals by India versus Sri Lanka in ODIs. These instances not only showcase the performance but also the struggles that India have faced earlier against the Islanders.

In a thrilling Asia Cup 2023 final showdown against Sri Lanka, Indian pace bowler Mohammed Siraj etched his name in the annals of cricket history with a remarkable performance. Siraj delivered a devastating spell that dismantled the Sri Lankan batting lineup and secured a resounding victory for India.

Siraj’s opening spell was nothing short of sensational. He took a total of six wickets while conceding just 21 runs in his seven-over spell, which included a maiden over. However, it was his initial burst that left Sri Lanka reeling. Siraj reduced Sri Lanka to a precarious 12 for the loss of five wickets in just four overs.

The highlight of Siraj’s performance came during the fourth over of the Lankan innings. With four wickets to his name in the over, he joined an exclusive club of bowlers to achieve this remarkable feat in One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

The over that created history:

  • First ball: Pathum Nissanka attempted to play a length ball towards the square region but found Ravindra Jadeja at point, who took a routine catch.
  • Second ball: Siraj bowled a lethal delivery at 143 clicks which was fraction short and outside off. But Sadeera Samarawickrama shouldered his arms to let it go.
  • Third ball: Siraj bowled an in swinging delivery that struck Samarawickrama’s pads, resulting in a leg before wicket dismissal.
  • Fourth ball: Going a bit fuller, Siraj induced Charith Asalanka to drive, but the batter chipped it straight to Ishan Kishan at covers.
  • Fifth ball: Dhananjaya de Silva, the last hope for Sri Lanka in that over, managed to begin with a boundary.
  • Sixth ball: However, Siraj came back strongly and dismissed Dhananjaya, caught behind by the wicketkeeper, to complete his four-wicket haul in a single over.

With this incredible achievement, Siraj became only the fifth bowler from full-member nations to claim four wickets in an over in ODIs. The exclusive club features Sri Lanka’s Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga, Pakistan’s Mohammad Sami, and England’s Adil Rashid.

Bowlers with four wickets in an over in ODIs (full-member nations):

Chaminda Vaas against Bangladesh: Chaminda Vaas, the leg??endary Sri Lankan bowler, achieved the similar feat during an  ODI against Bangladesh back in 2003 at Pietermaritzburg.

Mohammad Sami against New Zealand: Former Pakistan pace sensation Mohammad Sami bagged 4 wicket??s in an over when Pakistan took in New Zealand? in 2003 at Lahore.

Lasith Malinga against South Africa: In the 2007 World Cup, Sri Lanka pace bowler Lasith Malinga destroyed Sout?h Africa with his splendid bowling. Malinga picked up 4 wickets in an over ??at Guyana.

Adil Rashid against West Indies: During England’s tour of West Indies in 2019, Adil Rashid impressed one and all when he took four wickets in an over at Grenada.

Mohammed Siraj against Sri Lanka: As explained above, Mohammed Siraj scripted history in the Asia Cup final against the Lan??????????????????????????kans. Overall, in his s??even-over spell, the right-armer bagged 6 wickets for 21 runs.

The cricket world stood in awe as India’s fiery pace bowler Mohammed Siraj etched his name into the annals of cricket history during the Asia Cup 2023 Final against Sri Lanka. Siraj showcased a spellbinding display of pace and precision in the contest that left the cricket fraternity erupting with excitement. The 29-year-old bowler claimed a sensational five-wicket haul in the blink of an eye within the three-over spell, equalling the legendary Chaminda Vaas‘ record for the quickest ODI fifer.

The collapse of Sri Lanka

The day had begun with Sri Lanka winning the toss and opting to bat first. However, what followed was nothing short of a cricketing spectacle. Sri Lanka’s top order crumbled, with wickets falling like a house of cards. Kusal Perera‘s early dismissal marked the beginning of a cataclysmic collapse for the Sri Lankan side. By the time they reached 12 runs on the scoreboard, six wickets had already fallen??, and it wa?s evident that something extraordinary was unfolding.

The Siraj Show

What made this collapse even more remarkable was that five of these wickets were claimed by the relentless Siraj. The Hyderabad-born cricketer started off with a mesmerizing spell of fast bowling, and the statistics tell the story itself as his five-wicket haul came within a mere 16 balls, equalling Vaas’ record that had stood since 2003. Notably, the Sri Lanka veteran had achieved the feat against Bangladesh.

In a spell that will be remembered for years to come, four wickets for Siraj came in a single over, making him the first Indian bowler to achieve this feat in ODI cricket. This over left the Sri Lankan camp in shambles, struggling to come to terms with the sheer brilliance of Siraj’s bowling.

Siraj’s performance not only catapulted India into a commanding position in the Asia Cup 2023 Final but also sent shockwaves through the cricketing world

They praised his relentless aggression, his ability to swing the ball both ways and his impeccable line and length.

The Indian cricket fans were recently treated to a dream comeback of their star pacer, Jasprit Bumrah. It is worth mentioning that Bumrah was out of the Indian team for a brief period of time due? to persistent back issues that eventually led him to undergo surgery in New Zealand.

Jasprit Bumrah’s remarkable comeback

Nevertheless, Bumrah’s return to the international arena as the T20I captain for the Ireland tour was nothing short of spectacular. The pacer’s performance saw him bag four wickets across two games and clinch his maiden series as the Indian captain.

Following his stellar performance in Ireland, Bumrah was also included in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2023. Chaminda Vaas’ valuable piece of advice for Jasprit Bumrah

In his interaction with the press, Vaas acknowledged Bumrah’s unique talent as a seam bowler and emphasized the importance of managing his workload intelligently. Vaas emphasized that players like Bumrah, with their distinctive bowling actions, should not be overburdened by playing in all three formats of the game. Instead, he advocated for a thoughtful approach that identifies the most suitable format for such individuals and manages their participation accordingly.

“Players like Jasprit Bumrah have a unique action, and we must protect individuals of such calibre. They can’t play in all formats. We need to identify the suitable format and manage their participation accordingly,” stressed Vaas, underlining the need to preserve Bumrah’s fitness and longevity.

Chaminda Vaas’ praise for India’s Kohli-Rohit power duo

Beyond the Bumrah advisory, Vaas also shared his insights on Indian cricket’s power duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The veteran seamer hailed Kohli as a special player, recognizing his extraordinary contribution?s to the game over the past decade. He expressed confidence that both Kohli and Rohit Sharma would bring their A-game to the ODI Wor?ld Cup, delighting fans around the world.

“We all know that Virat is special player and the way he performed for the last decade is extraordinary. Even Rohit, I’m pretty sure that they will give their 100% playing for India. All the fans are waiting to see these two performing. And I’m sure that they will go all out and trying to do well for India,” Vaas lauded Kohli and Rohit.

Today, let’s have a look at the top ten bowling figures in One-Day Internationals:

Amid lockdown, many cricketers are engaging in different things to interact with their fans. Some are revealing their favourite batsmen/bowler while ?some are coming up with their best XI team consisti??ng of legendary cricketers from different teams.

Recently, Australia’s spinner Ashton Agar dropped his dream XI which featured many pre-eminent names from this sport. Latest on the trend is Sri Lanka batsman Dinesh Chandimal. On Tuesday, he revealed his all-time Test XI of the players he has played with and against.

Chandimal picked five players from his nation, two from India and South Africa, and one each from West Indies and England. Although his batting line-up looks a bit unusual, for example, Chandimal picked iconic Sachin Tendulkar as an opener. The Lankan batsman chose Alastair Cook as Sachin’s partner.

With? 15,92?1 runs, Sachin is the highest run-getter in the longest format of the game, while Cook with 12,472 runs to his name is the leading run-scorer for England and fifth highest overall.

For the next two spots, Chandimal went with his countryman Kumar Sangakkara and India captain Virat Kohli. The batting maestro, Sangak??kara is the leading run-getter for the Islanders. He has scored 12,400 runs in red-ball format, whereas Kohli has so fa??r accumulated 7240 runs.

Apart from Sangakkara, Chandimal picked four more Lankan players in the form of Mahela Jayawardene, and bowling trio of Rangana Herath, Cha?minda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan. The 30-year-old named Jayawardene as captain of his all-time Test XI.

Muralitharan is the highest wicket-tak?er in Test cricket with as many as 800 scalps to his name. On the other hand, Herath with 433 wickets in red-ball format is the second-highest wicket-taker for Sri Lanka, while Vaas is also just behind the spin duo with as many as 355 scalps in the longest format of the game.

Chandimal went for Jacques Kallis as the all-rounder and Dale Steyn as the prime pacer. For the middle-order, Chandimal picked West Indies’ genius, Brian Lara. Kallis is the third-highest run-getter in Tests with 13,289 runs to his name, whereas Lara is at the seventh spot in most run-scorers with 11,953 runs.

Here is Dinesh Chandimal’s all-time Test XI:
