Cricket Australia (CA) has introduced significant changes to the playing conditions for both domestic and internati??onal players, with one of the most notable changes being the mandatory use of neck guards for Australian players starting from October 1.

This rule will require players to wear neck guards on their helmets when facing fast or medium-paced bowling, excluding spinners, wicketkeepers, and close-in fielders. This development has stirred attention due to resistance from high-profile players such as Steve Smith and David Warner, who have historic??ally avoided using neck guards.

Protecting the head and neck is extremely important: Cricket Australia

Smith, Warner, and Usman Khawaja are among the few players who have rarely used neck guards since their introduction in 2015. The neck or stem guards were designed in response to the tragic death of Phillip Hughes. However, Smith had notably worn a neck protector while playing for Sussex ahead of the 2023 Ashes, complying with the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) rule for mandatory neck protectors, which was enforced from October 2022.

Despite objections from some players, CA has emphasized the importance of head and neck protection. CA’s head of cricket operations, Peter Roach, in an official statement, said, “Protecting the head and neck is extremely important in our sport. The neck protector product has come a long way in recent years, and the decision to make them mandatory comes off the back of a lot of advice and consultation with a wide range of experts and stakeholders.”

Other notable changes in the playing conditions

Mandatory neck guards are just one of several changes to CA’s playing conditions for the upcoming 2023-24 season. Another notable change is the adjustment to the automatic six rule for balls that hit the roof at Marvel Stadium in the Big Bash League (BBL). Umpires w??ill now have th??e discretion to decide whether the ball was heading over the boundary. If not, it will be deemed a dead ball.

CA has also implemented measures to expedite play in the BBL, including time limits on injury stoppages and streamlining stumping reviews. Under the new rules, umpire reviews for a stumping will no longer include a TV umpire review for caught behind; the TV official will solely adjudicate on the stumping. Captains will be required to use the DRS to challenge a caught-behind decision, and the review must be initiated before the TV umpire’s stumping decision.

Moreover, on-field injury assessments, excluding concussion assessments, are now limited to a five-minute window. Players requiring further treatment will need to leave the field, potentially? leading to batters being forced to retire hurt. CA has also aligned its rules by removing the Covid-19 substitute rule from its playing conditions, in l??ine with changes made by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Cricket Australia (CA) has come up with some significant changes to the Big Bash League (BBL) system regarding the contract and availability of players. The modifications include a substantial increase in player remuneration, which has become feasible due to the newly established five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association, announced earlier this month.

Under the new regulations, the eight BBL teams ca??n enlist up to two CA-contracted players, who will be listed under a newly crea?ted Marquee Supplementary List. They will only be available for selection if the opportunity arises.

After a considerable rise in the total payments pool of each club from $1.9 million to $3 million, it ?is now mandatory for every club to have at least six players (whether domestic, overseas, or CA-contracted) who receive a salary of $200,000 or above per season, and these players will be considered as marquee players. In BBL|13, the combined payment for these six players should not be less than $1.7 million.

Additionally, the league has confirmed salary hikes for three of the four draft bands. Notably, plati??num picks are scheduled to earn $420,000 in BBL|13, which is an increase of 23.5% compared to last season.

Notably, overseas players picked at the gold level will experience a 15% hike in their salary, receiving $300,000. The silver picks will also witness a?? rise of 14%, and they will earn $200,000. In contrast, the bronze salary band will maintain their payment of $100,000 in BBL|13.

Further, in order to obtain the full payment, platinum players must now be present for the entire season, unlike last edition, where top players like Rashid Khan and Trent Boult received the top wage despite leaving midway to play in other T20 leagues in South Africa and the UAE. However, platinum-drafted players available for eight matches?? or fewer will still receive $360,000 for the season.

Cricket Australia (CA), on Wednesday, announced the latest 17-player contract list ahead of an exciting 2023-24 season. Earlier this week, the board announced the new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) under which CA women’s contracts rose from 15 to 18, with 17 players included on the 2023-24 list.

The likes of Phoebe Litchfield, Grace Harris, Kim Garth and Heather Graham all have been added to CA’s women’s contract. The list, however, could’ve been 18 players, but all-rounder Nicola Carey declined the contract offer as she aims to focus on pre-seaso??n ??with Tasmania.

Notably, Carey had been a staple in Australian squads since her 2018 debut but featured in just one T20I on December’s tour of India and was subsequently left out of the T20 World Cup squad.

“Nicola Carey expressed a desire to spend the winter in Tasmania to allow her to utilise a full preseason at home, focusing on using that time to develop skills in her game to push for international selection in the future. We offered Nic a contract because we believe she is a player of international quality, but we respect her decision to focus on a pre-season program with Tasmania and will continue to support her moving forward,” said??
