Days after Brendan Taylor revealed that he had failed to report a corrupt approach immediately, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has initiated an action against the former Zimbabwe captain. The apex internat?ional authority has banned Taylor for three-and-a-half years from all forms of cricket.

Notably, Taylor had recently confessed on social media, claiming that he had visited India in 2019 to meet a businessman with the idea of launching a T20 competition in Zimbabwe. However, things didn’t work out, and the businessman threatened the cricketer to indulge in spot-fixing. Taylor revealed that he reported the offence to ICC four months later to protect his family.

“Brendan Taylor has been handed a three-and-a-half-year ban from all forms of cricket after he accepted four charges of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code and one separate charge of breaching the Anti-Doping Code,” the ICC said in a statement on Friday.

According to ICC, Taylor chose to admit the charges under the provisions of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. As per the international body, the Zimbabwe st??ar breached the following provisions of Article 2.4 of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code:

  • Article 2.4.2 â€?Failing to disclose (without unnecessary delay) the receipt of any gift, payment, hospitality or other benefit that (a) the participant knew or should have known was given to them to procure a breach of the Code or (b) that was made or given in circumstances that could bring the participant or the sport of cricket into disrepute.
  • Article 2.4.3 â€?Failing to disclose to the ACU (without unnecessary delay) receipt of gifts/hospitality with a value of US$750 or more regardless of the circumstances in which they were given.
  • Article 2.4.4 â€?Failing to disclose to the ACU (without unnecessary delay) full details of the approach received to engage in corrupt conduct under the Code, including Zimbabwe’s then upcoming series against Sri Lanka and/or Bangladesh.
  • Article 2.4.7 â€?obstructing or delaying an ACU investigation, including concealing, tampering with or destroying any documentation or other information that may be relevant to that investigation and/or that may be evidence of or may lead to the discovery of evidence of corrupt conduct under the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.

Former Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor took the cricketing world by storm after revealing that the ICC is likely to impose a multi-year ban on his international career after he allegedly delayed reporting a corrupt ?approach.

Taylor released a statement on his official Twitter account, stating that in 2019 he had visited India ??to meet a businessman with the idea of launching a T20 competition in Zimbabwe. However, he claimed that substance abuse occurred during his meeting, and the businessman threatened to release the video of the same happening unless the cricketer indulged in spot-fixing.

Taylor revealed that he reported the offence to ICC fo??ur months lat?er in order to protect his family and hoped that the governing body would understand.

“It took me 4 months to report this offence and interaction to the ICC. I acknowledge this was too long of a time, but I thought I could protect everyone and, in particular, my family. I approached the ICC on my own terms, and I hoped that if I explained my predicament, my genuine fear for our safety and wellbeing, that they would understand the delay.

“Unfortunately, they did not, but I cannot feign ignorance in this regard. I have attended many anti-corruption seminars over the years, and we know that time is of the essence when making reports,” said Taylor in his statement.

After Taylor’s explosive revelation, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin shared his reaction and offered his support to Taylor. Ashwin ??also stressed the importance of raising awareness.

“Spread the awareness!! Most times, the hand dealt to us at the poker table gives us an option to bet or fold!! Its important to fold and leave the table! All strength to Brendan and his family” tweeted Ashwin.

Brendan Taylor, the Zimbabwe wicketkeeper-batsman, has?? announced his retirement from international cricket.?? The third ODI against Ireland in Belfast was his last game in the Zimbabwean jersey.

Taylor made his international debut in 2004 during an ODI against Sri Lanka in Bulawayo, and since then he had been one of the mainstays of the Zimbabwean side. He did his best work in ODI cricket, scoring 6684 runs in 205 matches, which makes him Zimbabwe’s second-highest run-getter in the format after Andy Flower.

Taylor walked away with 2320 runs in 34 Test matc?hes and 934 runs from 45 T??20Is.

“It has been a roller-coaster ride. Lots of highs and lots of lows. Looking back I have fond memories. I wouldn’t change the past for anything in the world. Anything is achievable,” Taylor said before ??entering the f??ield one last time.

“I hope I don’t go past Andy Flower. I have had the highest regard for our best player ever. A win would be great to finish off. Great tournament in WC 2015. I was 29-30 and probably the pinnacle of my career. This is a young team. It has helped me in deciding to retire as I feel they can take it forward. I am very excited for them. With cricket is all I ever know of.

“Some point I will come back and give something back. But now is the time for family. Cricket will always be close to my heart. Massive for both teams. We are up against it today. Series win will be an enormous day for us.”

Taylor hit an enterprising 49 in the opening game of the ongoing series against Ireland to help Zimbabwe go 1-0 up in the ODI-leg. Whil??e rain played spoilsport in the second clash, Taylor departed fo??????????????????????????r 7 (12) in the third and final ODI.

Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor was adjudged out ‘hit wicket’ as he mistakenly swung his bat backwards and dislodged the off bail, just after practising a shot.

The incident took place during the 25th over of the first inning?s in Harare. Taylor attempted an upper-cut against the Bangladeshi pacer Shoriful Islam, and failed to connect with the ball. After ??????????????????????????the ball had passed his bat?, Taylor practiced the shot from the crease and swung his bat backwards, but hit the off-stump with his bat in the process.

One of the Bangladesh fielders noticed, and appealed. On-field umpire Marais Erasmus referred it to third umpire Langton Rusere who adjudged Taylor out for 46.

Here’s what the law says:

“Out Hit Wicket” clause 35.1

35.1.1 The striker is out Hit wicket if, after the bowler has entered the delivery st??ride and while the ball is in play, his/h?er wicket is put down by either the striker’s bat or person as described in Laws 29.1.1.2 to 29.1.1.4 (Wicket put down) in any of the following circumstances:

35.1.1.1 in th??e course of any action taken by him/her in preparing to rece??ive or in receiving a delivery,

35.1.1.2 ??in setting off for the first run immediately after playing or playing at the b?all,

35.1.1.3 if no attempt is made to play the b??all, in setting off for the first run, providing that in the opinion of the umpire this is immediately after the striker has had the opportunity of playing the ball,

35.1.1??.4 in lawfully making a ?second or further stroke for the purpose of guarding his/her wicket within the provisions of Law 34.3 (Ball lawfully struck more than once).

35.1.2 If the striker puts his/her wicket down in any of the ways described in Laws 29.1.1.2 to 29.1.1.4 before the bowler has entered the delivery stride, either umpire shall call and signal Dead ball.”

The One-Day format of the game is? a rive?ting one where the action spans up to 100 overs in a day. The team which plays better through all the phases usually end up on the winning side.

The game witnessed several blockbuster finishes with the action building up until the 100th over of the match,?? with the chasing team needing a handful.

Today, let’s have a look at five successful chases in the last over of an ODI match:

The summit clash of the triangular series between India, Sri Lanka and hosts West Indies would be remembered for MS Dhoni’s finishing prowess, where he knocked off 13 runs required off the final over of Shaminda Eranga, with just one wicket in hand.

Sri Lanka s??et a target of 202 in front of the Indian team which was fresh off their triumphant 2013 Champions Trophy campaign.

The likes of Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik and Suresh Raina, threatened to c?hase down the score at ease, with the? score at 139/3.

However, it all changed soon as the ‘Men in Blue’ were reduced to 167/8. Last man Ishant Sharma walked in with the score at 182/9.

It was Dhoni who shepherded India, with 13 required off the ??final over ?and launched the assault against Eranga, with a couple of deliveries to spare.

2. Fortune Cup – 1st ODI, Pakistan vs West Indies in 2008

The 2008 Pakistan-West Indies encounter at Abu Dhabi saw Kamran Akma??l chasing down the total set by West Indies, wi??th as many as 17 required in the final over.

Earlier, West Indies posted a daunting target of 295 in the firs?t of three-match ODI series. Shoaib Malik put Pakistan in a respectable posit??ion.

However, it was Akmal’s 9-ball 24 cameo which changed the game for West Indies, with Pakistan requiring 33 off the final three overs. Jerome Taylor faced the brunt of Akmal’s bat as he dispatched him for three sixes.

3. 2nd ODI – Zimbabwe vs Bangladesh in 2006

The Zimbabwe-Bangladesh encounters have always turned out to be classics, and the 3rd ODI at Harare during the 2006 Bangladesh tour proved to be the sam?e.

With the five-match series tied at 1-1, the Tigers were looking at a pos??sible victory. Especially, after posting a challenging 236 and reducing the hosts t?o 151/7.

However, it was Brendan Taylor who turned out to be the hero of the day, with his match-win??ning knock of 79 off ??just 72 deliveries.

Zimbabwe needed 18 off the final over from Mashrafe Mortaza, and five required from the final delivery. Taylor smashed Mortaza in the?? final delivery for a maximum to h?elp his side win the match.

4. Benson and Hedges World Series: England vs Australia in 1987

Australia hosted the Benson and Hedges World Series in 1987 wh?ere they met England at Sydney for the second round. The Aussies could manage only 233, after getting a decent start from Geoff Marsh and Dirk Welham.

Chasing a challenging total, David Gower and Chris Broad gave the perfect start for the Three Lions but were redu??ced to 202/7 in the 47th over.

England had their task cut-out with 18 required off the final over from Bruce Reid. It was Allan Lamb’s turn to be the hero of the match as he knocked off the required target with his brutal hitting, taking his team home with an unbeaten knock of 77.

Brendan Taylor, the talented batsman from Zimbabwe, revealed who are his five best all-format bowlers during an Instagram chat session by Cricket Addictor. The Harare-born cricketer?? picked two Australians, and one each from England, South Africa and India.

The right-handed batsman started the proceedings by naming Dale Steyn, a lethal fast bowler from his neighbouring country. The Proteas speedster has been a phenomenal find for his nation. Recently, England’s pacer Stuart Broad picked him as the best bowler of modern-day cricket.

Steyn has so far played 125 ODIs, 93 Tests and 47 T20Is for South Africa, and in these games ‘The Phalaborwa Express’ has taken 196, 439, and 64 wickets, respectively.

Taylor then picked one of Australia’s all-time great Mitchell Johnson. The Aussie paceman has retired from the game after playing 153 ODIs, 73 Tests and 30 T20I games. The left-arm pacer went on to grab 239 wickets in ODI format, 313 in red-ball cricket, and 38 in the shortest form of the game.

Taylor didn’t just stop there as he selected another Australian bowler in the form of yorker-specialist Mitchell Starc.

Starc shined with the ball in 2019 WC and finished the tournament as the leadin??g wicket-taker. The New South Wales cricketer has so far donned the Aussie jersey in 91 ODIs, 57 -Tests, and 31 T20Is. The 30-year-old fast bowler has earned 178 scalps in ODIs, 244 in the longest format of the game and 43 in T20Is.

The former Zimbabwean captain picked India’s frontline bowler Jasprit Bumrah as his fourth-best all-format bowler. Bumrah is known for bowling toe-crushing yorkers and has impressed many fans across the world. The right-armer has featured in 64 ODIs, 50 T20Is and 14 Tests in his career.

Bumrah has taken 104 wickets in the 50-over format, while in T20Is he has 59 scalps to his name?. In red-ball cricket, t??he Ahemdabad-born has grabbed 68 wickets.

For the fifth and final position, Taylor went with England’s leading wicket-taker in Tests, James Anderson. The English bowler has taken 584 scalps in 151 games and is the fourth bowler and fist seamer in the history of Test cricket to grab that many wickets. Anderson has also played 194 ODIs and 19 T20Is, in which he has claimed 269 and 18 wickets.

Zimbabwe’s cricket talisman, Brendan Taylor, during a recent interaction with his fans, enlisted his all-time XI in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Taylor, who lately made a comeback into the Zimbabwe ??cricket team, was also part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad roster during the 2014 IPL season. He picked his IPL XI during an Instagram Live session with Cricket Addictor on Monday.

In the opening slot, Taylor placed West Indies’ legend Chris Gayle who has featured for three franchises thus far, in all editions of the tournament.

Alongside Gayle, the Zimbabwe middle-order batsm??an paired him up with swashbuckling Indian opener Virender Sehwag.

The middle-order of Taylor’s best IPL XI of all-time is bolstered by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) teammates, AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli. The two are masters of the current generation of batters in the modern-day cricket.

Also, the finishers of Taylor’s lineup are none other than Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni. The duo have finished several games?? for both India as?? well as franchise cricket.

Further, the all-rounders in the team ar??e CSK stalwart Ravindra Jadeja and KKR ace Sunil Narine. The bowling lineup is propelled with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Bumrah and Malinga have featured together for Mumbai Indians quite a while now. They have also won IPL titles under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. Ashwin, on the other hand, mov?ed from Kings XI Punjab to Delhi Capitals, after a successful stint at CSK.

Taylor’s all-time IPL XI:

Chris Gayle, Virender Sehwag??, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Sunil Narine, Ravichandran Ashwin, Lasith Malinga, Jasprit Bumrah

Brendan Taylor is one of the most underrated batsmen in contemporary cricket. Internal turmoil in Zimbabwe Cricket led to Taylor’s topsy-turvy car??eer.

Carrying forward their mom??entum from a thump?ing 3-0 whitewash in the ODI series, hosts Bangladesh beat Zimbabwe in the first T20I at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka on Monday.

Usual ??suspects, Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das continued their purple patch by providing an explosive start at the top. Before Iqbal perished on 41, Bangladesh crossed 90 within ten overs.

Das impressed yet again with his knock of 59, which came off just 33 deliveries, scoring eight lip-smacking b?oundaries (5 f??ours, 3 sixes).

How?ever, the innings belonged to Soumya Sarkar, who pushed the Bangladesh total to 200, with his fine unbeaten knock of 62 off just 32 deliveries.

Sarkar, sco??ring at a fierce strike rate of 193, hit four boundaries and five sixes during his knock. Bangladesh posted another daunting target of 201 in front of the hapless Zimbabwe line-up.

Yet again, it was the o?verdependence on S??ikander Raza down the order, which cost Zimbabwe the match. None of the batsmen were able to anchor the run-chase with a substantial knock.

Raza, who looked in a flashy ?form off-late, had a rare failure on tour. For the bowlers, it was the lethal combination of Mustafizur Rahman and leg-spinning all-rounder Aminul Islam, who shined for Bangladesh. Both picked three wickets each during their spell.

Tight bowl??ing from Mohammad Saifuddin, Shia Islam, and Mehedi Hasan bottled the Zimbabwe batters under pressure. As a res?ult, Bangladesh won the match comfortably by 48 runs, after bundling out Zimbabwe on 152.

One of the most gracefu??l left-handers produced by the Tigers, Sarkar, walked away with the Man of the Match title as the hosts lead the 2-match se?ries by 1-0.

Brief Scores

Bangladesh 200/3(20 overs) beat Zimbabwe 154/10(20 overs) by 48 runs
Soum??ya Sarkar 62(34), Liton Das 59(39), Mustafizur Rahman 3/32, Aminul Islam 3/34
