New Zealand have etched their name in the history books with a remarkable bowling performance, defending a mere 147-run target against India at the Wankhede Stadium during the 2024/25 season. This latest triumph has positioned New Zealand second on the all-time list of lowest totals successfully defended against India in Test cricket, as they pulled off a thrilling 25-run victory.

5 lowest Test totals successfully defended against India

1. West Indies’ iconic 38-run victory in Bridgetown (1996/97)

The all-time record for the lowest total successfully defended against India belongs to the West Indies. In the ?1996/97 season, the West Indies held India to just 120 runs while defending a modest 158-run target in Bridgetown, Barbados. Their disciplined bowling attack secured a memorable 38-run win, a feat that remains unparalleled in terms of low-score defenses against India.

2. New Zealand’s 147-run defense at Wankhede (2024/25)

New Zealand’s recent defense of 147 in the 2024/25 season against India at the Wankhede Stadium ranks second on the all-time li?st. Their bowlers capitalized on the challenging pitch conditions to apply relentless pressure on the Indian batsmen. The thrilling 25-run victory underscored New Zealand’s tactical brillianc?e and adaptability, and it stands as a testament to their unwavering determination.

3. Sri Lanka’s 176-run defense in Galle (2015)

In 2015, Sri Lanka delivered a remarkable bowling display to defend a target of 176 against India at the Galle International Stadium. Despite the modest total, Sri Lanka’s bowlers exploited the spin-friendly?? conditions to secure a decisive 63-run victory, showcasing the impact of intelligent bowling in low-scoring games.

4. England’s Birmingham defense of 194 (2018)

During the 2018 season in Birmingham, England successfully defended a target of 194 against India. The?ir bowlers executed a disciplined game plan to restrict India to just 162, clinching a narrow 31-run win. England’s defense in this match highlighted the?? importance of persistence and tight bowling, especially in pressure-filled situations.

5. South Africa’s memorable 208-run defense in Cape Town (2017/18)

South Africa’s bowlers took centre stage at Cape Town in the 2017/18 season, defending a target of 208 runs and dismissing India for just 135. This dominant 72-run victory on a seamer-friendly pitch underscored South Africa’s strength in fast bowling, turning the low target into a monumental challenge f?or the Indian lineup.

In a historic moment for New Zealand cricket, both the men’s and women’s teams achieved remarkable milestones, prompting an ecstatic response from former Black Caps captain Kane Williamson.

Notably, Williamson can join the New Zealand Test squad for the third and fi??nal Test against India if he regains full fitness and gets ?an approval from New Zealand Cricket (NZC).

Historic achievement for the White Ferns and the Black Caps

The New Zealand women’s team, also known as the White Ferns, clinched the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup on Sunday (October 20), marking their first title in this format. Their victory came in the final against South Africa, where they demonstrated resilience and skill, ultimately winning by 32 runs. This triumph not only elevates the status of women’s cricket in New Zealand but also serves as a significant milestone for the sport globally.

Simultaneously, the New Zealand men’s team made headlines by securing a historic Test win in India, their first in 36 years. This victory was sealed during the first Test match at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where they triumphed by eight wickets. The performance was characterized by standout contributions from players like Rachin Ravindra and Matt Henry.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has officially announced the appointment of former allrounder Jacob Oram as the bowling coach of the men’s national team. This decision comes as the team prepares for a busy schedule of Test matches, with Oram set to take over the role permanently from October 7, 2024. He fills the position previously held by Shane Jurgensen, who stepped down in November 2023.

A familiar face in coaching

Oram, who has a wealth of experience both as a player and a coach, has been involved with the New Zealand cricket setup for several years. He previously served as the bowling coach for the national women’s team from 2018 until the Women’s ODI World Cup in March 2022. His recent stint as a temporary bowling coach during the Test tour to Bangladesh and the Men’s T20 World Cup has provided him with valuable insights into the current team’s dynamics.

The 46-year-old has represented New Zealand in 33 Tests, 160 ODIs, and 36 T20Is, amassing a total of 229 international caps throughout his playing career.  In an official statement, Oram expressed his excitement about returning to the Black Caps, stating, “I’m really excited to have the opportunity to be involved with the Black Caps again. To be back involved with a team that means so much to me and has been a big part of my life is a real honour.”

Focus on developing young talent

Oram’s primary objective in his new role will be to nurture the next generation of bowlers within the New Zealand setup. He aims to share his knowledge and experience with emerging talents, preparing them for the challenges of international cricket. “There’s a fresh new wave of talent coming through in the Black Caps bowling ranks, and I hope that I can share my knowledge and experience to help best prepare them,” he added.

With a series of Test matches on the horizon, Oram’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the New Zealand team. The Black Caps have faced challenges in recent international outings, including a disappointing performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year. The team will be looking to bounce back and solidify their standing in the international arena.

New Zealand’s star batter Kane Williamson has made a significant decision, stepp?ing down from the T20I and ODI captaincy while declining a central contract for the 2024-25 season.

Kane Williamson prioritizes family and overseas cricket leagues

This move prioritizes both his desire for more t??ime with family and the pursuit of an overseas cricketing opportunity.

Notably, he i?s se?t to be picked by a top team at the SA20 and might also feature in the upcoming Major League Cricket (MCL) in the USA.

“Helping push the team forward across the formats is something I’m very passionate about and something I want to keep contributing towards,” Williamson said in a New Zealand Cricket (NZC) release. “However, pursuing an overseas opportunity during the New Zealand summer means I’m unable to accept a central contract offer.”

Williamson open to accept the central contract in future

Despite this ?decision, Williamson remains committed to represen?ting New Zealand and accepting a contract in the future.

“Playing for New Zealand is something I treasure, and my desire to give back to the team remains undiminished,” he said. “My life outside cricket has changed, however. Spending more time with my family and enjoying experiences with them at home or abroad is something that’s even more important to me.”

This announcement follows a less-than-stellar T20 World Cup 2024 campaign for New Zealand, where they failed to reach the semifinals for the first time since 2014. Williamson remained unclear about his future in T20Is, stating, “On, I don’t know. We’ll see where things land,” when asked about his involvement?? in the 2026 edition.

By choosing a casual contract, Williamson will receive a retainer while in the camp with the Black Caps, along with the usual matc??h fees. He is expected to be available for most Tests, potentially missing only the September match against Afghanistan in India (which lacks World Test Championshi?p significance).

The Black Caps’ forthcoming schedule includes tours of Sri Lanka (Tests and ODIs) and India, followed by a home series against England starting in November. Williamson will likely miss the white-ball matches against Sri Lanka before rejoining the team for the home season opener.

Injury-plagued former New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson is ?in line to represent the United States of America (USA) in international cricket.

According to a report in ESPN Cricinfo, the drawc??ard of holding ODI status is spurring an ambitious recruitment drive by USA Cricket that could lead to it including active internat??ionals from around the world.

Anderson, who last played for the Black Caps in a T20 international against Pakistan in November 2018, is among the top players in USA Cricket’s list. The Christchurch-born Anderson has an American fiancée Mary Shamburger, and the couple spent quality time together during the ?COVID-19 pandemic in Texas.

Englan’s 2019 World Cup winner Liam Plunkett, whose wife is from Pennsylvania, has b??een mentioned as another target. Plunkett has played 13 Tests, 89 ODIs and 22 T20Is. His last game was an ODI against New Zealand in July 2019.

USA made th??eir international debut at the 1979 ICC Trophy (now known as the World Cup qualifier) in England. It has since missed only two editions of the competition.

“We want to win cricket games. We want to qualify for World T20s, we want to qualify for World Cups. We want to win cricket matches. By winning cricket matches, we’re able to – we don’t do this very well at the moment, but we need to do this better â€?we build heroes and role models that are wearing the stars and stripes, and we need to amplify those stories. Sometimes those will be people who have come through the US and sometimes those will be people that come into the team because they have a passport or have qualified on residency grounds. But we want the USA team to be at the forefront of the international cricketing community’s minds,” USA Cricket CEO I??ain Higgins was quoted as saying to ESPN Cricin??fo.

Anderson is also in radar of becoming a marquee player for USA’s Major League Cricket – a franchise based T20 league – in Dallas, scheduled to begin in 2022. The left-hander has so far played 13 Tests, 49 ODIs and 31 T20Is for New Zealand, in which he has scored 683, 1109, and 485 runs alongside picking up 16, 60 and 14 wickets respectively.

Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson share a great camaraderie on and off the field, and the Indian skipper’s latest Instagram post proved how much he respects the New Zealand captain.

On Thursday, Kohli took to Instagram to share a picture with Williamson from India’s last tour of New Zealand and called his counterpart a “Good man”. “Love our chats. Good man @kane_s_w,” Virat captioned his post.

Virat is known for his aggression on the field while Kane has ma??de a name for his calm demeanour in the most testing times.

Reacting to this post, Williamson came up with a hilarious response, claiming the pair were probably discussin??g who is taller.

“Same here bro, looking forward to the next one! … also trying to workout who is taller ?”

During the tour, Kohli and Williamson both didn’t play in the fifth T20I between the two teams, a video of them chatting on the boundary line went viral, and fans loved it.

When asked about the discussion the two skippers had, in the post-match presentation, Kohli said: “Kane and me have similar mindsets, similar philosophies. It is amazing that despite being from different parts of the world, we have similar thinking and we speak the same language. Despite what the scoreline suggests, I feel that New Zealand cricket is in the best hands, and he is the right guy to lead this team. He is the perfect, perfect man to lead them. I wish him the best of luck and power to lead this side in the future. They are a side everyone loves to watch and play against.”

Meanwhile, much like other sports, crick??et too has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic and players have been forced to stay at home for ove?r two months now due to the ongoing health crisis.

Virat Kohli endured a difficult time with the bat during India’s 0-2 Test-series defeat to New Zealand, scoring only 38 runs in four innings at an average of 9.50. Before this series, India, under his captaincy, had won each of their first seven Tests in the 2019-21 World Test Championship cycle.

Frustrated India captain criticized his team and sparred with a journalist as New ??Zealand won the second Test inside three days to sweep the series on Monday.

Home skipper Kane Williamson celebrated “an outstanding performance” as New Zealand, who won the first Test by ten wickets, claimed the second by seven wickets.

??But it left Kohli, who was caught making a foul-mouthed outburst to the Christchurch crowd during day two, disappointed with his top-?ranked side.

Kohli was even seen giving a send-off to his counterpart Williamson when Jasprit Bumrah dismissed the latter cheaply in New Zealand’s first innings.

The Indian skipper, on the third day, was once again heard saying a somewhat controversial statement during New Zealand’s second innings when the visitors were defending 131.

Kohli was standing in the slips for the majority of the innings where he was heard saying: “Jab India mein yeh log aayengey, tab dikha doonga (I will show them when they come to India),” according to Indian Express.

The Men in Blue will look to continu??e their good run of form when they take on the Black Caps in the upcoming T20I se??ries.

In a month and a half long tour for the Virat Kohli troops, the two teams are schedul??ed to play three ODIs and two Tests after the five T2??0Is.

India did exceedingly well recently on home soil where they got the better of South Africa, Bangladesh, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Australia. However, New Zealand on home turf will pose a massive threat to their excellent run, and the tourists will have to be wary of the threat posed by Kane Williamson’s brigade.
