Former Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne will bring the curtains down on his international career following the second Test against Australia in Galle, which begins on February 6. The match holds significant personal importance for the 35-year-old, as it will also mark his 100th appearance in red-ball cricket for Sri Lanka.

Karunaratne’s retirement will see him join an elite list of Sri Lankan cricketers to have achieved this milestone, becoming only the seventh player from his nation to do so. The left-handed opener has been a cornerstone of Sri Lanka’s batting lineup in the World Test Championship (WTC) era, leading from the front with b?oth his lead?ership and batting performances.

Dimuth Karunaratne set to retire after 100th Test

Since making his Test debut in 2012, Karunaratne has been one of Sri Lanka’s?? most dependable batters, amassing 7,172 runs in 99 matches, including 16 Test centuries. His consistency at the top of the order played a crucial role in several of Sri Lanka’s memorable vict??ories. However, recent struggles with the bat have seen a dip in his form, managing just 182 runs in his last seven Test matches.

His last half-century came against New Zealand in September 2024, and his performances in the ongoing series against Australia have been underwhelming, registering two single-digit scores ?in the first Test. Despite the recent lean patch, his contributions to Sri Lankan cricket remain undeniable, with numerous match-winning knocks and his ability to anchor innings in challenging conditions.

Memorable test innings as a captain of Sri Lanka

Reflecting on his career ahead of his 100th Test, Karunaratne, speaking to the ESPNcricinfo recalled one of his most challenging yet rewarding innings – the pink-ball Test against India in Bengaluru in 2022. Facing a formidable Indian bowling attack led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, Karunaratne described how batting under lights was an eno?rmous challenge.

He recounted a critical moment with Kusal Mendis, where he told his partner that if he survived the testing period, he would go on to score a hundred. True to his word, he delivered a remarkable innings, which he later? described as his best knock as Sri Lanka’s captain.

“There was a really tough period where we had to bat a few overs against the new ball under lights. At the end of one day, I remember telling Kusal Mendis that if I survived that period, I’d somehow get a hundred the next day. (Jasprit) Bumrah and (Mohammed) Shami with the pink ball were incredibly hard to see through that night. But then things got into a flow, and I could score runs. Probably my best innings as captain,” Karunaratne said.

Sri Lanka will be keen to level the two-Test series against Australia when the second game gets underway on February 6 in Galle. Karunaratne will become only the seventh Sri Lankan cricketer to achieve the landmark of 100 Test matches, joining an elite group of legends. However, despite his experienc??e and past contributions, his recent struggles were evident in the first Test against Australia, where he registered two single-digit scores. As he prepares to step away from international cricket, Sri Lanka will be looking to honor his illustrious career with a strong performance in the decisive Test match.

In a historic moment for New Zealand cricket, both the men’s and women’s teams achieved remarkable milestones, prompting an ecstatic response from former Black Caps captain Kane Williamson.

Notably, Williamson can join the New Zealand Test squad for the third ??and final Test against India if he regains full fitness and gets an approval from N?ew Zealand Cricket (NZC).

Historic achievement for the White Ferns and the Black Caps

The New Zealand women’s team, also known as the White Ferns, clinched the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup on Sunday (October 20), marking their first title in this format. Their victory came in the final against South Africa, where they demonstrated resilience and skill, ultimately winning by 32 runs. This triumph not only elevates the status of women’s cricket in New Zealand but also serves as a significant milestone for the sport globally.

Simultaneously, the New Zealand men’s team made headlines by securing a historic Test win in India, their first in 36 years. This victory was sealed during the first Test match at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where they triumphed by eight wickets. The performance was characterized by standout contributions from players like Rachin Ravindra and Matt Henry.

Williamson expresse??d his joy and pride at the achievements of both teams.

“Criiiiickeeeet” he captioned his post with a heart emoji.

“Congratulations @white_ferns, world champions! And the brothers in Bangalore, epic!

A knee injury to Rishabh Pant has created a significant ?challenge for India ahead of the second Test against New Zealand in Pune. The wicketkeeper-batter sustained a blow on Day 3 of the first Test in Bengaluru, which India lost by eight wickets.

Despite being injured, Pant walked in to bat in India’s second innings and played a remarkable 99-run knock with the help of 9 fours and 5 gigantic sixes. However, he didn’t take the field in the fourth innings of the match. His injury is particularly concerning as it involves the same knee that underwent surgery last year following a serious car accident in December 2022.

Rohit Sharma’s take on Rishabh Pant’s injury

In a post-match press conference, India captain Rohit Sharma expressed the need for caution in Pant’s recovery, acknowledging the multiple surgeries the youngster has undergone on the knee off late.

“He has had a massive operation on his knee. We need to be a little careful about you know, where he’s at and what he is to us. Even when he was batting, he was not comfortably running. You know, he was trying to only put the ball in the stands but again with someone like him, we just need to be extra careful, because he’s had a lot of minor surgeries, and one big surgery on his knee,” Rohit said about Pant’s injury.

Rohit also emphasized the physical demands of wicketkeeping and explained the team’s decision to rest Pant from those duties in the first Test. He also noted Pant’s struggles with running while batting, often opting to clear the boundary rather than relying on conventional running between the wickets.

Also READ: 3 instances when India lost a Test match ag??ainst New Zea??land on home soil

“Rishabh Pant has gone through a lot of trauma, to be honest in the last 1.5 years. So it’s just about being extra careful with him. So, you know, when you’re keeping, you have to bend every ball with your knee going down, and the wicket being what it was, we thought it was the right thing to do for him to stay inside and then get 100% ready for the next one,” the Indian skipper added.

Pant doubtful for second Test against New Zealand

Pant’s participation in the upcoming Test in Pune remains uncertain. The final decision will be made by captain Rohit and the head coach Gautam Gambhir. According to reports, the team’s management has deferred the final call, allowing for flexibility based on Pant’s fitness ahead of the match.

With the high-profile Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia just two months away, Pant’s fitness is crucial for India. The team management is considering to rest him for the second Test against New Zealand to ensure his full recovery. A final decision is expected soon.

Though Pant’s absence could further complicate India’s preparations for the second Test, but the team remains hopeful for his speedy recovery and return to full fitness.

New Zealand’s victory over India in the first Test at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has reignited discussions about India’s past defeats against the Black Caps on home soil.

Instances when India lost a home Test against New Zealand

Being a dominant force in Test cricket, India have lost to New Zealand at home only three times. Here’s a look at those instances:

1) Nagpur, October 1969: New Zealand wins by 167 runs

In a remarkable performance, New Zealand secured their first-ever Test victory in India at Nagpur. The Kiwis posted a formidable total of 314 runs in their first innings, with contributions from their top-order batters. In response, India managed only 257 runs. During their second innings posted 214 on the scoreboard, setting India a 277-run target. However, India could manage only 109 runs, handing New Zealand a comprehensive victory by 167 runs. 3) Bengaluru, 2024: New Zealand wins by 8 wickets

India faced their most recent defeat against New Zealand during the first Test of the ongoing series. After bowling India out for a historic low of just 46 runs in the first innings, the Black Caps took a commanding lead with their total of 402. Despite India’s fightback in the second innings with a score of 462, they set a target of only 107 for New Zealand, which was successfully chased down within 28 overs for the loss of 2 wickets.

The win in Bengaluru not only ended New Zealand’s 36-year long wait for a Test win in India but also serves as a reminder of the competitive nature of cricket between these two teams.

New Zealand registered a historic victory over India in the first Test in Bengaluru on Sunday (October 20), taking a crucial 1-0 lead in the three-match series. This win was particularly significant as it marked New Zealand’s first Test victory on Indian soil since 1988. The match witnessed an incredible performance from New Zealand’s bowlers, who skittled India out for a meager 46 runs in their first innings.

New Zealand’s triumph and India’s setback in Bengaluru

Matt Henry led the charge with a fiery spell, claiming 5/15 and exploiting the Indian conditions to perfection. In response, New Zealand capitalized on their advantage, with Rachin Ravindra playing a sublime knock of 134. His century, along with a late cameo of 65 from Tim Southee, helped New Zealand post a mammoth total of 402, putting India under immense pressure. India’s second innings saw a spirited fightback, largely due to Sarfaraz Khan’s valiant 150 and Rishabh Pant’s aggressive 99.

However, the second new ball, expertly handled by Henry and William O’Rourke, swung the momentum back in New Zealand’s favour, limiting India’s lead to just 106. On day five, New Zealand chased down the modest target of 107 with ease, thanks to a composed 48 from Will Young and an unbeaten 39 from Ravindra. The v?ictory gave New Zealand not only a?? historic Test win but also a significant psychological edge in the series.

India’s and New Zealand’s positions in WTC 2023-25 points table

This defeat has had notable implications for India’s position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings. India’s points percentage (PCT) dropped from 74.24 to 68.05, reducing their lead at the top of the WTC table. Despite the loss, India remains in the number one spot, but their margin over second-placed Australia has been slashed to just 5.5 percent.

Both teams have an identical record in terms of victories, defeats, and draws; nevertheless, Australia’s PCT stands at 62.5 due to over-rate penalties that have resulted in point deductions. On the other hand, New Zealand’s impressive win saw them jump from 37.50 percent to 44.44 percent, propelling them to fourth place in the standings. This surge in their PCT allowed them to leapfrog both South Africa and England. While Sri Lanka remains comfortably in third place with 55.56 percent, New Zealand’s improved standing keeps them well within reach of ?a potential WTC final berth.

India’s qualification scenarios for the WTC final

India’s road to the WTC final has become increasingly challenging after the loss to New Zealand. With their points percentage (PCT) now reduced to 68.05, India’s once comfortable lead at the top of the WTC table has narrowed considerably. To secure their place in the final without depending on the outcomes of other teams, India will need to win at least five of their remaining seven matches. These matches include two more Tests against New Zealand and the high-stakes five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy(BGT) series in Australia. A vic??tory in five of these games would boost their PCT sufficiently to guarantee a spot in the WTC final.

Nonetheless, India does have some margin for error. If they manage only four wins, their qualification would hin??ge on other results falling in their favor. Factors such as Australia losing some of their upcoming matches or other teams like Sri Lanka and South Africa dropping points could open the door for India to reach the final with a lower win tally.

Nevertheless, every match from here on out is crucial for India, especially with Australia breathing down their necks, separated by just 5.5 percent in the standings. India must also avoid any over-rate penalties, which could lead to point deduc?tions and further complicate their chances. Their second Test against New Zealand in Pune becomes a must-win, not only to level the series but also to keep their WTC final hopes f?irmly in their control.
