A peculiar incident unfolded on the inaugural day of the second and conclusive Test of the two-match series between Bangladesh and New Zealand that provided an amusing spectacle for the entire cricketing community as Mushfiqur Rahim became the first Bangladesh player to be given out for obstructing the field. Notably, this also marked the 11th instance in Test cricket when a batter was dismissed for ‘handling the ball’.

Mushfiqur Rahim’s unusual ‘handling the ball’ dismissal

The incident unfolded during the 41st over when Kyle Jamieson delivered a back-of-a-length outside-off ball to Mushfiqur, and he defended it with soft hands. However, what followed was ??an unusual act from the Bangladesh batter as he used his right hand to keep the ball away after the defence despite the ball being far from the off-stump. The incident prompted the New Zealand players to make a quick appeal, and the decision was referred to the TV umpire.

Upo??n multiple replays, the third umpire concluded that Mushfiqur intentionally handled the ball and decla?red him out, making him the first Bangladesh player to be dismissed in this manner. The decision raised the eyebrows of a few and added a touch of amusement to the cricketing community.

Understanding “handling the ball” law

The “handled the ball” law was incorporated into the Laws of Cricket during a rewrite in 2017. According to this law, a batter can be given out for handling the ball if, while playing a delivery, they intentionally touch the ball with one or both of their hands not holding the bat. This law aims to maintain the integrity of the game and ensure fair play.

Impact of Mushfiqur’s dismissal on Bangladesh

Following Mushfiqur’s departure, Bangladesh faced further setbacks, with the well-set Shahadat Hossain also departing soon after. The team found themselves in a precarious position at 123/6, opening the floodgates for New Zealand to capitalize on the momentum gained from Mushfiqur’s dismissal.

During the second ODI of the New Zealand tour of Bangladesh on September 23, a remarkable incident unfolded in the 46th over. Bangladesh’s pacer Hasan Mahmud attempted an unconventional run-out of Ish Sodhi. In a bold move, Mahmud removed the bails at the non-striker’s end before delivering the ball as he spotted Sodhi straying out of the crease, a rare occurrence in cricket.

Umpire Marais Erasmus referred the decision to the third umpire, who upheld the appeal, declaring Sodhi out for “backing up” too far. However, Bangladesh’s captain, Litton Das, showcased the essence of sportsmansh??ip by interveni??ng and allowing Sodhi to continue playing, thereby emphasizing fair play and the spirit of the game.

While many praised Litton for his decision, his senior teammate Tamim Iqbal criticized ??him for calling Sodhi back despite dismissing him right according t??o the rules.

Now, former South African cricketer AB de Villiers has shared his views on this incident that sparked a lot of debates amongst the cr?icket fraternity.

“I find it really irritating”: AB de Villiers

De Villiers provided a comprehensive analysis of the incident, firmly articulating his perspective on why the bowling team should not have the option to recall the dismissed batsman. The former South African captain suggested that the International Cricket Council (ICC) make a definitive ruling: enforce the dismissal as a s??tandard rule or eliminate it from the cricket rule book.

“Something that is irritating me at the moment is the rule of the run out when the batter is leaving the crease. Ish Sodhi was called back by the captain and I think, this is a little all over the place. I looked at the footage. If I get bowled, the captain can’t feel sorry for me and call me back. Right? So, why would this rule allow the batters to be called back? Where I am going with this is, I want the ICC to bring it into the rule that you can’t call batters back. Make it a fair dismissal. There are too many grey areas. When you leave grey areas, it can be really sore on the eyes for the fans, and I find it really irritating and hurtful towards the game,” the Proteas star said on his official YouTube channel.

“I don’t see this as sportsmanship, I’m sorry”

De Villiers emphatically asserted that the choice to reinstate Sodhi was not an exemplification of sportsmanship but rather a justifiable fair dismissal.

“My advice would be, take the rule away that you can’t call a batter back. If a bowler wants to run the batter out, take the dismissal off the rule book. If you are caught on the boundary, you are out. These are the rules of the game. You can’t say, “ah, he is my friend, call him back’. I don’t see this as sportsmanship, I’m sorry. It’s a fair dismissal, it’s out. Walk off the field,”
the 39-year-old further added.

Towhid Hridoy accumulated 18 runs off 17 deliveries before falling victim to Milne’s prowess in the 6th over. Steering the innings then shifted to skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and the seasoned wicket-keeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim. With their calm and composed approach, this pair maintained a steady run rate and stitched together a valuable 53-run partnership for the 4th wi??cket.

However, shortly after the drinks break, Lockie Ferguson, the Kiwi speedster, ma?naged to dismiss Rahim for 18 runs off 25 balls.

Ish Sodhi’s run-out and Litton Das’ heartwarming gesture

The incident took place during the 46th over of New Zealand’s innings when Mahmud was in the process of delivering the ball for Bangladesh, and Sodhi left his crease at the non-striker’s end before the release of the red leather. However, after a brief discussion, Litton and Mahmud later decided to withdraw their appeal and recalled Sodhi in a heartwarming gesture.

Ish Sodhi’s heroic performance in the second ODI

In the end, New Zealand emerged victorious in the game, and Sodhi played a pivotal role in their success with a crucial 35 runs and a brilliant six-fer. His remarkable all-round performance even earned him the well-deserved ‘Player of the Match’ award.

Ish Sodhi praises Litton Das for his act

During the post-match presentation, Sodhi took a moment to express his gratitude for Litton’s act of sportsmanship, calling his gesture ‘nice’. He also reflected on the match and the factors that contributed to the Blackcaps’ victory.

“Really good day. Historically we haven’t done well here and hence it is nice to get the win. Nice of Litton for calling me back after the mankad. That was the whole reason we decided to bat first as the ball would spin more in the second innings, even Ravindra and McConchie got the ball to spin. Playing ODI cricket leading into the WC is awesome, but this is a difficult place to play and to walk away with a win is awesome,” said Sodhi.

In a surprising turn of events during the recently-concluded 2nd ODI clash between Bangladesh and New Zealand, Bangladesh’s captain, Litton Das, displayed a remarkable act of sportsmanship by calling back Black Caps spinner Ish Sodhi after he was run out at the non-striker’s end. Acting swiftly, Mahmud removed the bails and appealed for a run-out. TV umpire Marais Erasmus reviewed the incident and confirmed that Sodhi was indeed out of his crease, leading to the initial decision of Sodhi’s dismissal.

In a spirit of true sportsmanship, captain Litton intervened after discussions with the umpires and chose to recall Sodhi back to the pitch. This decision was met with app??lause from the cricketing fraternity and was seen as a heartwarming?? display of fair play.

Tamim Iqbal expresses his disagreement

Well, not everyone shared the same sentiment. Bangladesh’s former skipper, Tamim, expressed his reservations about the decision to bring back Sodhi after his run-out. During the post-match presentation, Tamim voiced his perspective, stating, “I don’t see anything wrong in it. The rule is there. If we get someone out, or one of us gets out in that manner, I don’t think we should react the way people are reacting nowadays. I think it is a team decision.”

Tamim went on to emphasize the importance of consistency in such situations, saying, “If it is a team decision that we will take wickets in this way, we will. If we don’t want to take it, we will not try it. I don’t think it looks good to bring back a batter after getting him out. Either we take it, or we don’t do it.”
