In a bold and commendable move, Jahanara Alam, Bangladesh’s premier women’s fast bowler, has decided to take a break from international cricket. This decision, confirmed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), means that Jahan??ara will not participate in the?? national team’s historic upcoming tour of the West Indies.

A stellar career marked by recent challenges

Jahanara, who has represented Bangladesh in 52 WODIs and 83 WT20Is, has been an integral part of the team’s journey over the years. Her career tally includes 108 wickets across formats, with four five-wicket hauls highlighting her ability to impact games at the highest level. However, the past year has been tumultuous for the experienced pacer. After being left out of the national setup for nearly a year, she returned to the squad in July 2024. Unfortunately, opportunities were scarce – she did not feature in Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup matches and was benched throughout the ODI series against Ireland.

Reflecting on her decision, Habibul Bashar, who oversees the BCB women’s team, shared the board’s perspective. He stated stated that the player requested a two-month break from cricket due to mental readi??ness and even offered to forgo her contract. He emphasized respecting her decision and clarified there’s no fixed timeline for her return?, which will depend on her readiness.

“She had given us a letter stating that she was not mentally ready to play and wanted to take a break from cricket for two months. She even said that if necessary, she should not be kept in the contract. We need to respect that because if someone feels that she is not mentally ready and wants to take a break for some days, we need to accept that. There is no specific time frame for which she is out. Whenever she feels well, she will let us know,” Bashar said to Cricbuzz.

Jahanara Alam’s explanation behind the break

Jahanara clarified that her break is specifically from the Bangladesh national team and not from all forms of cricket. She is currently playing for Sydney Cricket Club in Australia’s First Grade Premier League while also taking on ??a coaching rol?e to mentor fast bowlers.

“I did not take a break from all kinds of cricket, I took a break only from the Bangladesh national team for a while. That’s what I let them know [BCB], but it is not a break from all kinds of cricket; then I wouldn’t be able to play here [in Australia],” Jahanara was quoted as saying by the Cricbuzz.

Expressing her happiness and gratitude, Jahanara shared that she received a scholarship to continue her cricketing journey in Australia. Reflecting on her decision, she highlighted the immense mental strain associated with international cricket, stati?ng that only 10% of the game involves skill, with the remaining 90% being a mental challenge. After years of relentless competition, she felt the need to step back and prioritize her mental well-being. Jahanara added that this break has allowed her to rejuvenate and refocus, ensuring she remains passionate about the sport.

“Alhamdulillah, I’m feeling better. I’m really so happy. I’m currently playing for Sydney Cricket Club here, which is in the First Grade Premier League. Also, I’m assuming the coaching role, helping the fast bowlers here. That’s my update. I got a scholarship here. No special reason [for taking the break], I just took it. I have played cricket at a stretch for a long time, so I thought of taking a break. Everything is related to mental state, no? We play cricket with only 10 percent of our skill, and the rest is a mental game. Everything is related to that. You can say, I needed a break mentally,” Jahanara concluded.

A historic West Indies Tour for Bangladesh without Jahanara

The Bangladesh women’s team is gearing up for their first-ever tour of the West Indies, led by Nigar Sultana. The series will feature three ODIs and three ??T20Is at Warner Park in St. Kitts and carries significant stakes as part of the ICC Women’s Championship.

Currently ranked seventh, Bangladesh must secure a top-six finish in the championship standings to directly qualify for the ODI World Cup in India later this year. Jahanara’s absence will be felt, especially given her experience in high-stakes matches. Along with Jahanara, all-rounder Ritu Moni was also not selected for the tour. However, the squad welcomes the return of players like Lata Mondal and Fariha Islam.

On Monday, December 2, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) unveiled the national squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies, set to begin on December 8. All the matches will take place at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts. This announcement comes after careful consideration of the team’s composition and player availability, with significant changes to the lineup.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz to lead Bangladesh in ODIs

Mehidy Hasan Miraz will continue his leadership role in the Bangladesh cricket team, having been appointed as captain for the ODI series. He will be leading the side for the first time in the 50-over format, following the absence of regular captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who is sidelined due to a groin injury. The BCB confirmed that Shanto’s recovery is still underway, and as a result, Miraz will take charge of the team for the upcoming series.

All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz will now lead the Bangladesh side in ODIs for the first time in the absence of Najmul Hossain Shanto who is still recovering from a groin injury,” BCB said in a statement.

Injuries and player absences

Several key players will miss out on the ODI series due to injuries or form concerns. Physician Monzur Hossain Chowdhury confirmed that Towhid Hridoy is currently dealing with a medical issue in his right groin, which requires rest. Hrido?y’s condition will be reassessed in two weeks to determine his readiness for future matches.

Hridoy had complained of pain in his right groin region and subsequent investigations have confirmed the presence of a medical condition. He has been advised rest and we will reassess him in two weeks to determine his readiness to play,” added BCB Sports Physician Hossain Chowdhury.

In addition to Hridoy and Shanto, several other players were omitted from the squad. Mushfiqur Rahim and Zakir Hasan were also not selected for the series. Hasan, in particular, was dropped due to a lack of form, as confirmed by the BCB, “Fellow left-hander Zakir Hasan, who was in the team in last month’s ODI series against Afghanistan in the UAE, has been dropped,” BCB said in the statement.

Additionally fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman will not be the part of the squad due to family emergency.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have announced the exclusion of right-arm fast bowler Taskin Ahmed from their squad for the second Test match against South Africa. This decision, coming ahead of a critical series-concluding match, has drawn attention from fans, given Taskin’s pivotal role in Bangladesh’s bowling lineup

The selection panel opens upon Taskin Ahmed’s exclusion

Taskin last represented Bangladesh in a Test match against India in September 2024. Despite being?? part of the Test squad for the current series against South Africa, he was left on the bench for the opening match in Dhaka. In a strategic decision by the BCB, Taskin will be absent for the upcoming match in Chattogram, where the team is aiming to recover from a loss in t??heir first Test.

A member of the BCB selection panel has provided insights into the rationale behind Taskin’s exclusion.

A selector has mentioned that Taskin, considered an all-format player for the team, will be away for 50 days for ODIs against Afghanistan and a full series against the West Indies.

“Taskin is our all-format cricketer and will be flying away from home for 50 days as we have ODIs against Afghanistan followed by a full-fledged series against the West Indies,” a member of the selection panel told Cricbuzz.

The selector added that Taskin will be rested to keep him fresh for the long tour, while Khaled Ahmed has been included as backup, with Nahid Rana and Hasan Mahmud fit and ready to play.

“We want to have him fresh ahead of the long tour and so decided to rest him, while Khaled is included so that if we need him, we can use him considering our two pacers, Nahid Rana and Hasan Mahmud, are fit and ready to go,” the selector added.

Bangladesh faces uphill battle against South Africa

After a seven-wicket loss in the first Test match, Bangladesh are in a must-win situation going into the second and final Test of the series, which will be held at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Although a series win is out of r?each, a victory in this match would allow Bangladesh to level the series, giving the team a much-needed morale boost.

Following the South Africa series, Bangladesh’s international schedule will continue with a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. After that, they will embark on a full-fledged serie?s against the West Indies, featuring two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is.

Bangladesh‘s legendary all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan, will not participate in the upcoming first Test against South Africa, scheduled to take place at the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium? in Dhaka on October 21.

Shakib Al Hasan’s absence from the 1st Test against South Africa

This Test match was meant to be Shakib’s farewell game, as he had announced his retirement from Test cricket in September. Despite his plans to bid adieu to the format in front of his home fans, The 37-year-old has opted out due to the intense protests currently happening in Bangladesh, which have raised concerns about his safety. Shakib had initially expressed his desire to play one last Test, asking his fans to be present, but due to the escalating situation, he will now miss the opportunity to have a grand farewell at home.

Replacement announced: A new chapter for Bangladesh cricket

In light of Shakib’s unavailability, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has selected left-arm spinner Hasan Murad as his replacement for the first Test against South Africa. Murad, although uncapped at the Test level, has showcased immense potential in domestic cricket. Since his debut in 2021, Murad has taken 136 wickets in just 30 first-class matches, earning him a spot in Bangladesh’s Test squad. He also represented the nation in the Asian Games 2023, featuring in two T20I matches. Murad’s selection marks a new chapter for Bangladesh cricket as they look to future talent to fill the shoes of an experienced all-rounder l??ike Shakib??.

BCB acknowledges legacy but stresses the need for a balanced team

While acknowledging Shakib’s immense contributions to Bangladesh cricket, the BCB admitted that there is currently no player in the squad who can match his calibre with both bat and ball. Shakib’s absence leaves a significant void, not only in terms of his cricketing skills but also his experience and leadership. However, the BCB remains hopeful that the inclusion of Hasan Murad will provide the necessary support to the team, particularly in the spin department, as they face a formidable South African side. With Murad’s first-class experience and promising talent, the board believes that Bangladesh can remain competitive in the two-match Test series.

“We have been informed that Shakib is unavailable for the first Test. He is at the end of his Test career but along with his experience, we still do not have someone of that calibre with both bat and the ball to replace him. However, Hasan Murad has performed consistently in first class cricket and has been in our system. He will lend balance to our bowling, especially in home conditions. We believe he has the potential to deliver at this level,” BCB chairman said in a statement.

Papon’s resignation is seen as a strategic move to allow for new leadership that may better navigate the current challenges facing Bangladeshi cricket.

Reacting to Papon’s resignation, BCB have appointed Faruque Ahmed as the new president.

Faruque, who has played 7 ODIs for Bangladesh, has served as the chief selector for BCB on two separate occasions. His first tenure was from 2003 to 2007, and his second stint was from 2013 to 2016. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be moved from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The decision was made due to the political unrest in Bangladesh, which raised concerns about the safety of the players and teams. Despite the change in venue, the tournament dates remain unchanged, wit?h the competition set to take place from October 3 to October 20.

Reasons behind the venue change

Bangladesh were originally slated to host the ninth edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup. However, ongoing political instability and nationwide protests made it unfeasible to hold the event there. The ICC, in consultation with various stakeholders, decided t??o shift the tournament to the UAE, a country with a proven track record of hosting international cricket events successfully.

ICC’s statement and Bangladesh’s role

Geoff Allardice, the ICC Chief Executive, expressed regret over the situation, acknowledging the efforts of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to try and host the event despite the challenges. He assured that the BCB would still retain the hosting rights alongside the Emirates Cricket Board and emphasized the ICC’s hope to bring a global event to Bangladesh in the near future.

“It is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event. I would like to thank the team at the BCB for exploring all avenues to try and enable the event to be hosted in Bangladesh, but travel advisories from the governments of a number of the participating teams meant that wasn’t feasible. However, they will retain hosting rights. We look forward to taking an ICC global event to Bangladesh in the near future,” ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said in ??a statement?.

New venue as a proven host

The UAE, home to the ICC headquarters, has hosted several high-profile cricket tournaments, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 and the Indian Premier League (IPL). The matches will be held in Dubai and Sharjah, two of the most iconic cricket venues in the region, ensuring that the Women’s T20 Worl?d C??up 2024 will be conducted in a secure and well-equipped environment.

Historical context and defending champions

The upcoming tournament marks the ninth edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Australia, the reigning champions and six-time titleholders, will enter the competition as the team to beat. England, the inaugural champions in 2009, and the West Indies, who won in 2016, are the only other teams to have lifted the trophy. The shift in venue is expected to ??bring a new dynamic to the tournament, making it an exciting prospect for players and fans alike.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has issued a formal statement to address recent rumors regarding the compensation for players who participated in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023. Some reports have suggested that the cricketers have yet to receive their payme??nts, nearly nine months after the tournament’s conclusion.

BCB clarifies the delays in player’s payments

In its statement, the BCB clarified that the delay in payment was not due to any fault on the board’s part. The BCB attributed the issue to tax-related formalities and compliance challenges rather than any administrative oversight. Despite the timely submission of invoices, such delays are not uncommon following ICC events, and the board assured that a resolution is imminent.

To expedite the resolution, the BCB has enlisted the expertise of the renowned international accounting firm Deloitte Haskins & Sells LLP. The board expressed confidence that players will receive their due compens??ation shortly.

The BCB strongly refutes the untrue remarks made by the concerned councilor and vehemently protests the insinuations of malpractice against the Board and its officials on this matter. Such allegations are baseless and undermine the integrity of the BCB’s operations,” the statement emphasized.

In a shocking incident that has brought the intersection of sports and politics into the spotlight, former Bangladesh captain and Member of Parliament Shakib Al Hasan was subjected to explicit verbal abuse during the ongoing Global T20 Canada (GT20) tournament. The inciden??t has drawn widespread attention, particularly given the ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh.

Shakib Al Hasan faces verbal abuse during the Global T20 Canada

A video circulating on social media shows the 37-year-old cricketer being questioned about the political situation in Bangladesh, only to be met with a barrage of hostile remarks?. The verbal attacks appear to be fueled by the current instability in his home country, where tensions have been escalating due to recent political upheavals.

Shakib, who was elected to the Bangladesh National Assembly as a representative of the ruling Awami League, has found himself in the crosshairs of public frustration. The government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has been under fire for its handling of a series of student protests that erupted on August 5, which further exacerbated the nation’s political crisis. As a high-profile figure in both sports and politics, Shakib’s association with the government has made him a target for criticism.
