Australia have once again proven their supremacy in women’s cricket by retaining the Ashes with an unassailable 8-0 lead in the multi-format series. Their victory in the first T20I in Sydney sealed the deal, ensuring that England/strong>s wait to re??claim the coveted trophy since their last? triumph in 2014 continues.

Last chance for England in the Women’s Ashes 2025

The hosts have been relentles??s, winning all four matches so far, and England’s performance has been riddled with missed opportunities and struggles, particularly against Australia’s skilled leg-spinners and their unmatched depth in both batting and fielding. The multi-format series, which began on January 11 and runs until February 2, 2025, features three ODIs, three T20Is, and a one-off Test match. Australia’s commanding victories in the first four games mean that even if England were to win the remaining matches, the best they can do is draw the series 8-8, as they did in the 2023 edition. However, given their current form, England could be more concerned about avoiding a humiliating whitewash.

England’s struggle in the series: A tale of missed opportunities

England arrived in Australia with high hopes, especially after drawing the 2023 Ashes series. However, their campaign has unraveled due to a combination of Australia’s dominance and England’s inability to capitalize on crucial moments. In the first T20I in Sydney, a valiant effort from Sophia Dunkley, who displayed a spectacular burs??t of hitting, was not enough to prevent Australia from securing a 57-run victory.

This loss encapsulated England’s struggles, as they have shown flashes of competitiveness but failed to sustain their intensity throughout the matches. The series has highlighted glaring weaknesses in England’s lineup, including their vulnerability against leg-spin and a lack of consistency in key moments. Captain Heather Knight’s team has been competitive in patches but has repeatedly succumbed ?to Australia’s superior all-around performance, leaving them disconsolate after each game.

The multi-format structure: Australia’s stronghold since 2015

Unlike the Men’s Ashes, which consists solely of Test matches, the Women’s Ashes adopts a multi-format structure. Each victory in the white-ball games – ODIs and T20Is – earns two points, while a Test win is worth four points. The one-off Test match at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground later in the series will be a day-night affair, adding a layer of intrigue. In the event of a draw or tie, teams share the points.

Australia have been the dominant force in this format since 2015, having retained the Ashes in every edition since then. Their record includes two 12-4 victories in 2019 and 2021, and an 8-8 draw in England in 2023, where they still managed to keep the trophy. With a string of consistent performances, Alyssa Healy’s si?de has shown remarkable cohesio?n and depth, ensuring their stranglehold on the Ashes remains unbroken.

England’s fight for redemption

Although the Ashes are now out of reach, England still has an opportunity to salvage pride and gain momentum in the remaining matches. The second T20I in Canberra on January 23 offers? a chance for Knight and her team to get on the board and demonstrate their resilience. The one-off Test match at the MCG, a venue steeped in cricketing history, also provides a platform for England to make a statement and prepare for future challenges.

For England, this series is a harsh reminder of the gap that still exists between them and Australia. To reclaim the Ashes in the future, they will need to address their weaknesses, develop ?counter-strategies against Australia’s spinners, and find ways to close out matches in high-pressure situations. While the 2025 series may seem like a missed opportunity, it could serve as a stepping stone for England to rebuild and challenge their arch-rivals in the years to come.

The first T20I between Australia and England at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground witnessed an extraordinary moment when England’s left-arm off-spinner, Sophie Ecclestone, produced a stunning delivery to dismiss Australia’s captain, Tahlia McGrath. Ecclestone’s brilliance ??with the ball played a crucial role in putting England on top as they aim to challenge Australia’s imposing total.

Tahlia McGrath’s aggressive knock cut short by Sophie Ecclestone

The match saw a dramatic turn in the 17th over of Australia’s innings when Ecclestone delivered a ball that had both pace and precision. McGrath, who was looking to accelerate the Australian innings, lined up to slog the delivery away but was completely outfoxed by Ecclestone’s perfect yorker. The ball rattled her stumps, sending McGrath back to the pavilion after a quickfire 26 runs off just 9 balls. Her knock included 4 fours and a six, but Ecclestone’s brilliance ended her stay at the crease. The Australian skipper, who had been playing an aggressive role in the match, was visibly frustrated as Ecclestone celebrated her wicket.

Ecclestone’s impressive spell and early breakthrough

Ecclestone’s remarkable spell continued to impress as she wrapped up her four overs, finishing as the most economical bowler for England. With an economy rate of just 6.50, she delivered when it mattered most, taking two crucial wickets. Earlier in her spell, Ecclestone had claimed the wicket of Australia’s Ellyse Perry, removing her for a mere 7 runs off 6 balls. Perry attempted an ambitious shot after advancing down the wicket to a tossed-up delivery, but missed, and the quick reflexes of wicketkeeper Amy Jones led to a stumping.? Ecclestone’s brilliant delivery left Perry with no chance as she was ??caught short of her crease, marking a stunning wicket for the English spinner.

Australia post strong total despite Ecclestone’s effort

Despite Ecclestone’s brilliance, Australia still managed to post a challenging total. After 20 overs, they ended their innings at 198 for 7. The Australian batting effort was built around a solid partnership at the top, with the incredible knock from opener and wicket-keeper Beth Mooney contributing an impressive?? 75 runs?? off 51 balls, including 11 boundaries. In response, England could only manage to reach 141, losing the game by 57 runs.

The Women’s Ashes 2025 has entered another exciting chapter of white-ball cricket with the beginning of the first T20I between the Australia and England women. The Australian Women team has remained undefeated during the 3-match ODI series between the two nations and have set their eyes to win the first 1st T20I in order to ultimately win another Women’s Ashes.

A fine glimpse of batting display solidifying their quest to claim the Ashes came at the hands of Australia’s top-order batter Phoebe Litchfield as she hit a rather unconventional six to add to th??e already exciting disp?lay of batting from the Aussies.

Phoebe Litchfield hammers a massive six

Litchfield arrived on to the crease during the 4th over of the match when debutant Georgia Voll was sent back to the pavilion after a valiant display of 21 runs off 11 balls. The ace? top-order batter, after spending some time on the pitch took the offensive matters into her own hands and started wreaking havoc on English bowlers.

The highlight moment of her short-lived but crucial innings came when during the 8th over of the innings she took a full length delivery from Sarah Glenn on her bat by instantly switching sides anticipating the pitch of the ball. The otherwise left-handed batter turned on her right and smashed a six towards the off side for a scintillating six, astonishing the English players and crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

Her unconventional six was the only maximum in her 25-run innings off 20 balls before was unfortunately run-out by Heather Knight in an outstanding display of fielding. Litchfield crucially provided a solid support base to wicket-keeper opener Beth Mooney who played a remarkable innings of 75 runs off? 51 balls.

In the second ODI of the Women’s Ashes 2025 between Australia and England at Junction Oval, Melbourne, Australian leg-spinner Alana King delivered a sensational performance that captivated the crowd and added a significant milestone to her career. King produced a breathtaking delivery in the first innings, which led to her cleaning up England’s Danielle Wyatt-Hodge. This wicket marked h?er 50th in the ODI format, an impressive feat she reached in just 36 matches.

Alana King’s impressive milestone

King’s remarkable achievement came in the 17th over of England’s innings, when she bow??led a sensational delivery to Wyatt-Hodge. With a perfect leg break that pitched on the leg stump and spun sharply away, the ball bypassed the batterâ€??™s defense, clipping the top of the off stump. Wyatt-Hodge was left clueless, offering no shot as the ball rattled the stumps. The clean bowled dismissal was a testament to King’s skill and precision, and it proved to be a crucial turning point in the match. King strikes again: Nat Sciver-Brunt falls to a stunning catch

King was not finished with just one wicket. In the 23rd over, she struck again, this time removing the well-set Nat Sciver-Brunt. Sciver-Brunt, who had been anchoring England’s innings with a valuable knock of 35 runs (57 balls, including 5 fours), tried to glance a fuller delivery from King onto her leg stump. However, the ball spun sharply away, and Sciver-Brunt’s leading edge lobbed up into the air, where Phoebe Litchfield was waiting to take the catch in the covers. Sciver-Brunt’s departure at that stage was a significant blow to England’s chances, and King’s second wicket in as many overs brought Australia right back into the contest.

Turning the tide: Two wickets in an over

The 39th over of England’s innings showcased King at her lethal best. First, she dismissed Charlie Dean, who attempted a cheeky scoop shot under pressure from dot balls. The poorly timed shot resulted in a simple catch for Beth Mooney at slip. On the very next ball, King sent Sophie Ecclestone packing. A sharp leg-break outside off tempted Ecclestone into a rash cut, and wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy completed ??a sharp catch. King wrapped up her 10-over spell with astonishing figures of 4/25.
